It was ok
The place snd the areas are unique, I would like to rate the hotel as 5 .
The service at breakfast was disappointed , only 2 waiters, one cleaning the table the second busy to gust service. Ask fo omlet that not arrived, no refill of the ages and the orangjuice at the self service table ,
The hotel in general required aome refreshment.
The rromes are dated , the lobby furniture are old
I would return because of the area but don”t expect luxury as it should seen in first look

Amazing exterior but super simple and basic rooms. There's no hair conditioner in rooms. Old and uncomfortable beds. Do not recommend

The hotel looks wonderful.
But….
No double bed in room
No wifi in rooms
No hot water in bathroom
The room is very minimalist

Beautiful castle and gardens. Very helpful staff. Great breakfast. Did not eat dinner at the hotel, opted to eat dinner in the town of Luso and Coimbra.
The castle is situated in a beautiful national forest and makes for a great adventure.

The hotel looks like a medieval castle but was actually built in the late 1800. There's a wow factor when approach the hotel. And some of the common areas are impressive such as the dining room. The young gentleman at the reception was very kind and helpful. And the surrounding forest is beautiful.
But the positives stop there. The problem is the hotel is falling apart. And the owners don't care. Wallpaper peeling off all over the place. Dirty bathroom och bathtub. Toilet doesn't flush properly. The cleaning staff must find paper and worse floating in the bowl every time they clean the room.
The staff in the restaurant is like Faulty Towers. Running here and there nervously, arguing with each other, throwing food on the table and running away again. We actually had a good laugh at it all, but considering the price and low quality of the food it's a disgrace.
Go here, look at the hotel and forest, but then leave and stay and eat elsewhere.

Beautifully ornate property. Very impressive decor throughout the common areas. Lots of good walking trails around the palace. The rooms are basic however and the food was abysmal.
2.0
The rooms (on level 1 anyway) are extremely dated and would be closer to a 3 ⭐ anywhere else in the world. The bathroom amenities were disappointing and there is no iron & ironing board in the room. Overall the hotel is beautiful with some stunning features including a magnificent forest to explore. The staff were all friendly enough and we enjoyed a nice meal in the restaurant.

The castle is stunning and the grounds are beautiful. Our room was very small but comfortable. It would have been nice to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room.
The staff at reception were lovely and we enjoyed the hearing the history of the building. What let the place down was the food in the beautiful dining room, the service was very slow ( we did get many apologies about that) the quality of the food was okay but very expensive for what it was.
3.0
For a 5 star hotel, it was rather shabby and sad. However, an interesting stay in a unusual and unique hotel.
2.5
Buildt as a retreat for a king and later used as a resort for the rich. Spacious common rooms and a grand staircase. Excellent foods served in a beautiful dining room.
The hotel is placed in a big park with numerous trails in the woods.

Older hotel with its charm but , lots of cracks on the walls in the room and bathroom, they could use some aromas to be rid of stale scent in the hallways
The younger staff in front weee fantastic
Breakfast was great
The nature and hike grounds are spectacular
No air conditioning - be ware if going in summer , you will rely on cooler air from outside which means you have to leave your walk in windows open - as we did all night

The building is stunning. The hiking around the palace peaceful

This is a very old property with all the old world charm. We stayed there for one night and loved it. Beautiful grounds, hiking trails around the hotel.

This hotel is stunning both inside and out. First experience of staying at a Pousada and hope its not the last.
The rooms are simple and clean, but its all about where you are staying. Fabulous architecture and historic features, beautiful and peaceful gardens and scenery in general. The staff are amazing as are the restaurant and bar. Probably the best weekend stay I've ever had.

An amazing hotel. In a location inside a forest that you can walk through so many beautiful trails and water fountains. The opulence of the hotel in yh common areas is something to behold. Th gardens so well manicured. Never seen a hotel like this. Excellent breakfast and dinner .

Fabulous stay and luxury experience for an affordable cost. Enjoyed dining at the hotel for dinner and breakfast In Luxe surroundings. Breakfast can be on the outdoor terrace overlooking the garden.
Hiked to the top and enjoyed the stations of the cross and other chapels that adorned our “way” dating back to the 1600s. Beautiful nature. Tranquility at its finest.
Highly recommend. Staff was very nice too.

Very old…….. No internet at all. No A/C. Windows are open by itself and All doors are knocking from drafts throughout the night. After all they turned off the water before 11 am . No toilet no shower no wash basin.
Property is bountiful! Breast is perfect! The service staff was excellent.
We had a GOOD time. But experience …….
The next time We'll choose another place.

Overall amazing stay, can’t wait to come again!

This property is amazing historic hotel. The facilities are aging and when you stay here to understand, they have been here more than 100 years. Female staff we encountered were exceptionally helpful. The male waiters and bartenders, not nearly as much the grounds are pretty and very likable not missed.

Beautiful facility and the staff was very friendly & response.

The rooms are in an abysmal state - such a beautiful property and the hotel does not live up to its potential.

Spectacular, historic palace hotel on grounds of a royal arboretum and garden. Service and food excellent, including their own brand wines.

This hotel is in a historic property, but I’ve stated in historic properties before and had much better experiences. The rooms were clean, and the bathrooms were nice. However basic amenities such as Wi-Fi and a mini fridge were lacking (don’t worry, they can forward your mail). Paint on the window frames of our room was peeling, and many areas of the hotel looked run down. Same for the grounds. Lovely from a distance but weedy, with overgrown or dead plants on closer inspection. We were asked to make a reservation for dinner when we checked in as if they fill up the dining room every night. Hardly any guests attended dinner, and the dinner food was expensive and subpar. Would not recommend. Fortunately the breakfast was very nice. Overall felt as if they were trying to maintain an air of expensive exclusivity, but they fell down on several points.

If you want to say you stay in a beautiful palace in Portugal then I would recommend this unique opportunity. However, if you don't wish to feel shamed or made to feel oppressed and bad about yourself then I don't recommend it. We visited from Canada and had an issue with booking our toddler son. The check-in person was rude, impatient and accusatory for our mistake. He refused to listen to anything we had to say and made us feel like common thieves trying to snuggle a child in who we were holding at check-in. He overcharged us for the child and then proceeded to reprimand us and make me feel demeaned as a mother. We understand occupancy and occupancy charges, and for a "five star" I would expect more tact and customer service vs personal attacks. The rooms are ok. It is outdated but you are paying for authenticity and the experience. At breakfast the one staff person was incredibly hostile and rude. They ran out of all kinds of food and noone dared to mention it or else she would snap at you and ask if you "did not like the food that was there." Overall we did not have a relaxing time as the ambiance and feel of the place is not filled with positive vibes and joy. Perhaps this is ok for a certain generation and style of traveler but to keep this place alive I think some of the backdoor thinking may need to be refurbished instead of the rooms. I took a star off for breakfast and one for service.

Sad to see such a wonderful property so run down. The gardens are barely cared for and overgrown with weeds. I stayed here more than 30 years ago and it is now just a shadow of its former self.

The room has absolutely no heat! We tried to get some help and were offered more blankets. A different portable radiator was given to us and it also did not work.
3.0
Dining service is terrible AND WAY OVERPRICED. I would give it a 5star had i not eaten there or dealt with the bar manager. Very arrogant attitude.

Third time here in 2 years. We love the Palace and love their staff

It is a great experience to stay at this palace. The checkin agents great. NOTE. the restaurant is WAY over priced and the staff I would say they think its a Michelin star but its not close. We had to preorder dinner and still took near an hour. Staff unfriendly and I can NOT STATE how over priced. I found after their is a cafe close that I would have chosen. DO NOT EAT IN THE RESTAURANT. you will overpay get bad service and not great. Sad as the place and the property to explore is amazing. The restaurant left a really negative impact on us.
