A spiritual, peaceful, zen like retreat in the Hawaiian natural forest allowing the visitor to immerse themselves in the joy of natural outdoors. Many extracurricular activities can be had on the property such as: meditation, yoga, stretching, healing processes, musical involvement, sightseeing and reading. Many activities are unlisted for your discovery.

Beautiful & peaceful place. Everyone are so friendly

I stayed in the Writer's Studio room, which was a unique experience. The windows are screened but not glassed in, so you get to enjoy copious fresh air, the sounds of a delightful babbling fountain and the resident coquis, and the comfortable temperature of the landscaped property at the Dragonfly Ranch. (Earplugs are provided for those who are not lulled to sleep by the sounds of nature.) I wish I could have availed myself of Barbara's healing services, but I arrived late and had to leave early for a dive trip. I missed the breakfast, but its description made me wish my dive trip started an hour later! I hope to return next year and perhaps stay longer to get the full experience.

Great service, friendly staff

Dragonfly is a unique place in Kona, with exceptional people running the facility, which was created by the founder 50 years ago! It doesn’t fit into any conventional thinking about hotels and they have a great upper deck with a fantastic view that would be fabulous for yoga. It is close to many sites but you have to be comfortable with the unconventional, including some frogs!

What a beautiful and serene location. The rustic lodging makes allows immersion into nature while providing the comfort of a hotel. The staff, the owner, and the food were great! A perfect place to get a taste of the Aloha spirit!

What a magical experience to stay here! Aunty Barbara and her team were filled with aloha, kindness and made our visit unforgettable. And all the fur babies made me not want to leave. We left rejuvenated and our hearts full. Mahalo nui!

We stayed for a night there at start of our Hawaii vacation. Very, large comfortable room with a beautiful, panoramic view.

Barbara and her staff are absolutely the kindest people on earth! Their description of their ranch is exactly as they say. We got to live with nature but all the elements of a very upscale ranch. It was holistic, peaceful and nurturing for the soul. This is NOT a place for people looking for a pedicure. This is a place for healing and time within and reflection. My husband says it’s “simple and spiritual.” We have backpacked and hiked all over the islands and this place was such a gem to us. More like the hippie oasis and soul searchers retreat.

Dragonfly Ranch is surrounded by green and the song of frogs and birds. I stayed in a room with a delightful view of trees then ocean. Dragonfly is only about a 6 minute drive from a great beach for snorkeling and swimming - Two Step, right next to the Pu'uhonua o Honoaunau (Place of Refuge), which is well worth a visit. Staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. I look forward to visiting again in the future.

It look like Youth Hostel! Small room. From the parking to the Dragonfly is the steepest walk! Not for wheelchairs! My room above the kitchen. Noisy. My friend wanted to wash her hair. No hot water!!! The breakfast room was was dirty! Food was good! Fresh fruits.

I had a wonderful stay at Dragonfly Ranch. Initially I gave a bad rating for check in experience because nobody was there for me to check in. And later I found that it was because a staff had to go to hospital for emergency and usually someone is there.
All staff are warm and helpful. The owner, Barbara is full of knowledge of health. And she is eager to help you how to be healthier and happier. The property is beautiful with big trees, lots of green and flowers. Healthy breakfast is a huge plus. I look forward to staying there again!

If you love kind and caring people and enjoy nature and a casual family-like environment, you will enjoy staying at the beautiful Dragonfly Ranch.
You will be immersed in the beautiful scents of tropical plants and flowers and enjoy a symphony of birds and nocturnal frogs and insects from your cozy eclectic screened in suite.
I had a wonderful time staying at this unique and peaceful place.
Thank you!

We had a wonderful time staying at the Dragonfly ranch. The owner, Barbara, was very engaging and helpful to find our way around the area. We had the option to stick to ourselves whenever we wanted, but also had great conversations with all the staff. Very delightful people. The bed was very comfortable and the room quiet. I highly recommend giving this gem of a place a try. We know we'll be back there for a stay next time we visit the Big Island.

Expensive for what you get. Camping with a roof. Dolphin room closes with only a small latch for security. Random door that leads to another room and locks from the otherside. Outdoor shower and bathroom. Breakfast was great. Cheaper than a resort but not worth the savings.

Its a little more basic than we thought it would be.
The bathroom was clean but basic.
Dragonfly Ranch is in the jungle - bring mosquito spray.
We had a big arse spider in the bathroom - none of us dare go past him to take a shower.
A simple breakfast was provided: coffee, cereal with nuts and fruit and toast.

From the moment my boyfriend and I checked in we were treated so amazingly. We were even given a choice to upgrade ( which we kindly declined). Our room was cozy... the bed was like a cloud. We watched a beautiful sunset after driving around the island. In the morning we woke up to coffee and a lavish breakfast that only happens here at Dragonfly retreat. For those who expecting a hotel type stay think again. This is an outdoor adventure to be explored and appreciated. We loved it and will return every chance we get. Thank you to all the staff for your hard work.

Dragonfly Ranch is a great place to stay, with awesome staff, and the owner (Barbara) enjoys getting to know the guests with a wealth of knowledge for what to do and great places for food and other experiences. Each morning breakfast is provided with fresh fruits (some from the ranch), nuts, seeds, healthy grains and more to start the day on Big Island. The Captain Cook area of Big Island is a wonderful area to stay where Dragonfly Ranch is located.

This is nothing like a hotel or B&B you would normally stay in. It is an eclectic experience more akin to crashing at a friend's place because you need a place to stay. In fact, many of the friendly staff seem to be doing just that. If you like a very different experience, this may be the place for you. First off, the doors to the rooms are not secure. They have only simple latches, so if you leave the property, you will want to bring all your valuables. There are no glass windows, just screens, and obviously no A/C, which can be a problem when it gets hot. They have fans, some good and some not. The beds seem to be clean but don't look too close into the corners or closets. Most showers are outside of the rooms, protected by sliding curtains. Cobwebs are ever-present as well. This place was apparently once a yoga studio and wellness retreat and still has many of the same facilities for those functions, including lots of books and healing oils around. The breakfast is a healthy affair with fresh cooked grains like quinois, and fresh fruit as well. The nut butters and jams for toast come from a collection that has been used by many people for a long time. They come out of the fridge on a tray that has been holding them all for quite a while. The place is filled with all kinds of interesting art and objects, but some, like the collection of musical instruments in the main "lobby" are covered with cobwebs. This place could be great with a major overhaul and deep cleaning.

We were dazzled with this property. We spent the first night of our Honeymoon here and it was perfect. The staff was so welcoming, helpful and caring. Added Bonus: Both my husband and I agreed that this was our favorite breakfast from both Oahu and the Big Island!! The pineapple was AMAZING!

The location was not what I expected. There are no locking doors, so if you want to leave anything in your room while you are away, you can not lock it. You can latch the screen door from the inside. The bathroom for the room I stayed in was not completely private. It was essentially on the outside porch and screened in by bamboo blinds. The location is staffed primarily by college age adults that were pleasant and helpful. It was a more natural setting than most lodging places. If asked if I would stay there again, I most likely would say yes.

We arrived and somehow in booking with hotels.com it changed 6 people to 2 people. So we had to pay $120 extra dollars to stay all in 1 room, which had lizards and the biggest bugs ever inside. We paid $456 for 1 night and most definitely not worth it!
Also don’t stay here if you’re allergic to cats! A cat kept coming into our room all night through the outdoor shower which is completely open to the room. Pictures are better than in person.

Staying at Dragonfly Ranch was an adventure! The staff was wonderful and the breakfast tasty. It is very non traditional and very tropical. Thank you so much, would stay again!

The property was lush with trees and creatures, almost like a rain forest. It was more like a spiritual retreat than a hotel stay. We loved the excellent organic breakfast every morning on the scenic deck, and our interaction with their friendly staff.

Dragonfly ranch is incredible. Staying here is like staying in a tree house mansion. The staff was incredible and Barbara was so nice. The place is an artistic marvel. Don’t stay here if you’re looking for a resort. But if you’re looking to get away from all the hustle and bustle and enjoy the Big Island, you can’t find better.

We were so happy and fulfilled during our stay. The property is gorgeous and mirrored by beautiful and friendly people stewarding the land. Charming, nature-centered, heartfelt, abundant! Chee-hu!

I don’t complain about the sound in the night(frog, birds). I am ok for that. House service people make me uncomfortable.

I have travelled throughout much of the world and the Dragonfly Ranch is one of the most unique places I have visited. The setting in the heavy tropical rainforest is wonderful! It’s such and peaceful and soul nourishing location. The room itself has three beds and plenty of seating. This is truly a place in which you can unwind and relax.

Noisy frogs and no way to close the windows. Bugs in the room

Excellent bed, we felt like we avoided jet lag due to how well we slept.
Filtered water prvided in room.
Beautiful location. Awesome, loving humans all around.

Loved the sounds of nature through the night, great vegan breakfast options and a fantastic view from the dining area. The only downsides were that local shops close really early if you are trying to pick up food if arriving after 8pm and we were woken by someone (possibly staff) having a long, loud telephone conversation at 4am.
Our bathroom was semi outdoors and the bed was pretty lumpy. Not for those looking for luxury but it suited us fine for our short stay.

This was our favorite place we stayed at over our two-week stay in Hawaii. My seven year old said “Good job finding this place, Mama!” Barbara told us she has run Dragonfly ranch for 47 years! And she has clearly been pouring live and presence into the place all that time. It’s probably not for everyone—if you’re a Hilton resort kind of person or don’t like to be close to nature, skip this. But if you swoon over private outdoor showers and a score of Big Island night sounds serenading your sleep, you’ll love it here. Breakfast is wholesome and comes with an incredible view. The sunsets are amazing, too. It’s like living in a retreat center. The charm and loving vibe are through the roof. This place is special, absolutely one of a kind. I wish we’d stayed much longer. It would be easy to make this a home base and travel all over the island while staying at the Dragonfly. Highly recommend!

If you are looking for unique experience in lush green jungles for relax and reflections, this B&B may be just the place. We arrived at the place later and missed the somewhat secluded entrance. The place doesn’t have all the amenities of a hotel, but the view and the sound were very rewarding. The room has a screen door, so that it offers fragrance of the jungle and a symphony played by bugs, frogs, birds day and night, and joined in by roosters in early morning. As you stayed longer, the “symphony” faded into a background music and you became less aware of its existence. The batch is also open to air - a 7’ bamboo screen and a roof provides privacy and partial protection from weather. There are two geckos taking the place behind the bathroom mirror as their home. If you turn on the bathroom light at the night, they would come out - not to welcome you, but to catch a few bugs attracted by the light for their dinner! When you enjoy your breakfast prepared with healthy ingredients and fruits, you would meet the company of two cute small dogs (Makana and Lonali) and a Siamese cat (Azure ), who was very attached to you. This is a germ hidden in the jungle if you are looking for staying close to nature but with all the comforts nowadays.

Our family of 4 loved the Dragonfly Ranch! We stayed in the Writers Studio and were very comfortable. We loved the openness of the room with the sounds of the jungle day and night! The breakfasts were incredible with different grains each morning with endless toppings along with toast and every kind of jelly you can think of! And the views to eat your meal was unforgettable. The Kona coffee was amazing, grown a mile away and handpicked for perfect ripeness, Barbara the owner of Dragonfly contacted the coffee grower so we could go pick up a precious pound to take home.
Every single staff member was all very friendly and helpful and the environment was very relaxed. We loved walking the grounds seeing the farm animals, gardens and the Illuminarium for doing yoga, meditation or just sipping coffee looking over the beautiful Pacific.
The location was excellent with Two-Step a couple miles away and great snorkeling. We also visited Pebble Beach and Hookana beach nearby. Black Rock Pizza in Captain Cook is the bomb with tasty Hoi Boi pizza and passion fruit Mai Tais!
The geckos were a treat to see and interact with (they liked licking our plate which is a no-no:). Yes it’s a jungle so expect critters but overall the place is clean. We felt like we were staying with family, even Azure the Siamese cat stayed with us nearly the whole time (my teenager loved!) We will be back! Thank you Barbara!

This was an absolutely amazing place to stay. Easy to get to, it feels like you are in the middle of the tropical forest with the frogs singing at night. The dragonfly ranch isn't your typical hotel. The room was comfortable and cool with lots of shade from the surrounding trees. Lots of screen windows and doors, making the whole experience close to the surrounding nature. Breakfast included a selection of exotic jams from a nearby farm that were fun to experiment with.
While my family loved it, this is definitely an unconventional place, so I could imagine some people might not like it. Here are some things you might find strange.
- The room didn't lock, with just a screen door.
- The bathroom just had a curtain and mosquito screen as a door.
- The shower wasn't tiles, but had a stone floor.
- One of the hotel's cats kept sneaking into the room through the showers.
