This is a property in the Sasso Caveoso in Matera, the most incredible and one of the most ancient places on earth. The views of the Sassi and the caves are incredible and the room carved in the rock was spacious and comfortable. I would have added a TV close to the bed and a second sink in the bathroom but altogether the place is great. Very good service ans evryone is superfriendly and helpful. Also great the breakfastr buffet

The room was beautiful but lacked lighting so it was difficult to see at night. The staff is absolutely lovely and very helpful.

The staff was excellent, very well trained and extremely helpful arranging for private tours, dinner reservation and transportation. Would highly recommend this place. The location is perfect and the staff just enhanced the whole experience.

Our room was a cave which was unique. Unfortunately, where the seating area was located in the back of the cave was very dark without proper lighting so a little depressing. The only way down is to leave your car at a garage and take the shuttle down that has to be booked. They don’t explain the charges for that ahead of time so the price of the garage and shuttle can add up!

We arrived on a Monday before our check-in time and I get we’re already ready for us. Which was nice. We took their largest, superior ayote for 2 nights. Everything was great except for the fact that it was incredibly hot in the room ever evening. Even when it was actually cold outside. The heating system was just WAY TOO HOT and we couldn’t control it. We turned everything off (any thing that could be turned off that is) and it was still WAY too hot. When we called the lobby they said that the heating was shared by all rooms so there was absolutely nothing we could do about it except open the window. Unfortunately that allowed for mosquitos to come in and cause other types of discomfort as I suffer from high sensitivity to bug bites. Overall the hotel staff was wonderful, the breakfast service was very good and the location was as excellent. For a 5-star Luxe hotel however, I think that the mattress was just “ok”. If these things were improved, we would definitely consider coming back. The large, in-room hottub and our large balcony overlooking the ravine and the caves made it all worth it.

Hotel is lovely and Matera was a unique experience. Unfortunately, our hotel room air condition wasn’t working and the hotel was fully booked. They weren’t able to solve the issue and we felt the service was average. For a 5-star hotel to not have their air working / find an alternative solve for their guests during the summer. They did give us a fan which didn’t help much and took off a €20 for a dessert we enjoyed on their terrace - but it wasn’t really going to cover for a poor nights sleep.
I still rate the hotel well as it is a lovely place, rooms are adorable and the experience of Matera is great. Just make sure to check the air condition as soon as you check in to the hotel.

Extraordinary experience at Sassi di Matera with a great contribution made by our decision to stay at Sant’Angelo Resort. Everything was perfect but I have to remark the excelent service provided by the staff! Our room was incredible with a terrace and a magnificent view over the most beautiful part of Matera. Best hotel in Matera!

Amazing cave experience in a unique city. Dealt impressively with Covid restrictions and we felt safe and well looked after. Suite 63 worth paying the extra for. Staff very helpful and would certainly return. Location superb. Recommend valet parking service as trying to park in Matera is difficult

Absolutely beautiful room, outstanding location, impeccable service. Couldn’t wait l to come back each day, to relax and enjoy the comfort and luxury of our room.

It was beautifully restored and maintained. The only drawback was the bathroom and in particular the shower as it was very small.

Excellent staff go the extra mile. Room first night did not warrant junior Suite category we changed room for 2nd night. This was much better. Bathroom only shower no basket in shower to put toiletries could only place on floor of shower tray certainly not first class. No bath robes either night had to ask. Rubbish flip flops need comfy slippers. No writing paper provided, but had a pencil. Many flaws for category classed as Luxury.

We found out on the day of arrival rhere was a problem with our room and were switched to a partner hotel. The change was seamless although it involved more stairs

Great location, Out standing service. Beautiful comfort and modern rooms. A uphills walk to rooms on rough steps but well worth it. Great service of picking your luggage to your rooms and bring them back down. One of the few places in that area that had valet parking. Would stay there again.

Absolutely stunning place beautifully appointed and in the most amazing location. Marred only by unbelievably slow and disorganised checkout. Beware - just because staff confirm times for bag pick up and car drop off does not mean they have organised either. All in all, though, a truly great place to stay.

We stayed at Sant’Angelos as a special treat as part of a wider trip through Puglia. Brilliantly situated in a truly unique city it was very good but failed to live up to value for money. The bathroom was poorly designed- no bench space at all - no vanity. Bathroom also had clear glass - cool looking but no privacy. Service from reception and porter excellent. Service in restaurant average - do all wait staff walk around looking very busy and ignore diners or is it just me? For the high cost would have expected more in room e.g. water, kettle, shaving kit, sewing repair kit.
Overall good stay but not outstanding. At the cost paid would have expected more.

firat of all it os way over priced, even for low season in november. tgat said the room was gorgeous, inside the cut rock. the bed is very cool, built in and romantic. however the bathroom too small and uncomfortable, suitable for a two star hotel. the breakfast very nice and generous. overall the ease of access is very difficult, many steps inside the hill side to go from a place to another. but the real disapppointment was the parking arrangement. not only it was ridiculously expensive, but it is not onsite. so after arrival the cuatomer hands the keys and the car os taken away. and then the best part. if during uour atay you need it, you need to have the valet taxi pick you up at the hotel, take you to the parking place where you can pick up the car , use it, return it and then either walk a long way up hill and down hill or again ise the valet servoce...but the best part is that the valet is not included in the already oitraheously expensive parking!!! that is all extra ...so in the end you can spend easily over fifty to get access to your car. definitely felt like a scam. for this reason alone i feel justifiable to give this place a poor rating even thouhh the location could otherwise be very pretty.

Matera is like no other town, and St Angelo is the icing on the cake.....beautiful hotel, unique room and superb cuisine, and located in the heart of the old Sassi. Perfect!

Great hotel. If you stay when it is very cold outside the heat leaves a lot to be desired .. Slept in our clothes and scarves with an extra blanket. Overall great though, would stay again and recommend.

We did believe our room would be entirely in a cave, but only the bathroom and entrance were, so that was a little disappointing. However it didn't really matter as we had a stunning view over a lot of the sassi from our large balcony. Breakfasts were good and in another of the caves, fantastic atmosphere, great staff and brilliant coffee in the morning. Roadworks in Matera confused our GPS (and we couldn't have found our way around Italy without one) somewhat, and meant taking some very tight corners to get down to the parking area. Recommend getting the smallest car you can as roads are also narrow. The parking area was pretty convenient to the hotel but some lugging of bags over cobbled paths and up stairs is needed. We felt like frauds having a luxurious bath at the end of the day in a room which had once been part of such poverty as the sassi had been, but after walking the streets it was great medicine for sore feet. Matera is a place we'll return to, very peaceful, extremely quiet, great for photographers and historians, and humbling to see what others less fortunate have managed to survive. Best to see it now before it becomes entirely covered with tourist hotels. It was a definite highlight of our 5 week holiday in Italy.

Staying in a hotel constructed out of ancient caves is certainly a unique experience, and one that I can definitely recommend. Our room was enormous, well decorated with a modern and efficient bathroom. The only minor niggle is that the air conditioning was not very effective. But that was offset by being able to sit out on the terrace with wonderful views over the gorge. Breakfast was very good, and we had dinner in the sister restaurant near the hotel where we dined like kings. The hotel is very handy for sightseeing, with tips from the helpful receptionist.
