About this apartment rental
The 2 bedroom/2bathroom apartment in Santa Maria by the Caribbean Sea down below right in Ocho Rios is on the North coast of Jamaica with sea view from the terrace, both bedrooms and bathrooms windows.
The building is in colonial style. The apartment for rent is the home of a well known Caribbean Hotelier and ceramist who has lived there for past 31+ years. It is Not purpose built short rental apartment.
From the ground floor the apartment is entered either by curved gentle stairs or by elevator to the next floor. As you enter the door you see the living room which is mostly in white, the terrace beyond and further to the large pool, the gardens and the Caribbean Sea.
The apartment is by the sea, a few steps down to the sea and the vanishing beach (blame it on climate change) and you have it's view from both bedrooms, bathrooms and Terrace. There is airconditioning and ceiling fan in the living/drawing room as well as in bedrooms. There is a ceiling fan in the kitchen too. Of the two bedrooms, one has a four poster king size bed( 78 inch by 74 inch ), it's ensuite bathroom and closet, the other a four poster old queen size bed ( 78 inch by 80 inch ) with it's own closet, bathroom and toilet. Each bathroom has an adjustable hand held shower and shower head. Linen and terry is provided.
The size of the apartment is 1754 sq ft. It is said that probably there are none 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartments of that size on North Coast except at Santa Maria.
There are books to read, cook and art works around from many countries. On regular basis new ceramics are made, sold, artworks and books bought and rearranged all over the apartment.
There is Nadene, Jamaican chef/housecarer . Her Jamaican cuisine is excellent. Ask her to prepare a few typical Jamaican dishes. She Is there every day except on Sunday, her day off and official public holidays to cook and clean the apartment. She works 40 hour/ 6 day week.She comes around 11:30. Makes your beds, cleans the apartment and prepares your lunch. There after she is there to prepare your afternoon tea/ coffee and dinner. She does not live in. If you would like her to prepare your breakfast or work on her day off, make prior arrangement with her and for payment. She is a lovely Jamaican , always with a ready smile, always helpful and quite amenable. There is no extra charge for her services.. Gratuity is up to you.
There is full kitchen with fridge, freezer, large & small oven, microwave, electric cooking range, juicer, blender, toaster, griddle etc.
There is a clothes washer and dryer, iron and board in a separate room.
All meals are eaten on the Terrace, because of the beautiful surroundings. It is lovely to sip your morning tea or coffee on the terrace or gazebo and see the sun rise and watch cruise ships pass by in distance.
There are many things to do around Ocho Rios. Dunns River Falls, Blue Hole, Fern Gully, Mystic Mountain as well as Dolphins Cove are only 10-15 minutes drive. In the other direction you are headed for James Bond country, Golden Eye( Ian Fleming), Firefly Guest House( Sir Noel Coward) and Ian Fleming Airport. Port Antonio is a 2 hour drive.
Several restaurants are well worth a visit and the small hotel Jamaica Inn and Hermosa Cove can be counted for a very pleasant evening. Reservations required. You can taste cuisines from Jamaica, Italy, India, China and North America around. Of course there are fish restaurants too. Particularly General Foods and Progressive supermarkets carry imported and gourmet food items as well as local specialities. Not far from Santa Maria every Friday there is a Farmers Market.
There is a tennis court on the property. A tennis instructor is available by prior arrangement for lessons or to play at price. There is a reserved parking space for the apartment.
The apartment is in a gated community with 24 hour security guards.
Santa Maria is 80 minute drive from Montego Bay airport, 100 minute drive from Kingston airport, 20 minute drive from Ian Fleming Airport or 5 minute drive from Ocho Rios town Centre.
For transfers from the airports, after customs clearance there is JUTA desk for private taxi service and car rental offices. There are JUTA drivers also outside the arrival door. The taxi fare from Montego Bay to Santa Maria is about US $125+.From Kingston about US $140+.
At Montego Bay airport there is also Knutsford Express Bus service at scheduled hours to Ocho Rios ( Drax Hall) enroute to Kingston. The bus fare is about US $20 per person. The taxi fare from Drax Hall is about $15+ to Santa Maria.

Airline now has 2 flights a week ( Wednesday and Saturday ) from Miami to Ian Fleming Internatioal Airport, 20 minute drive from my apartment. Coming winter season, there will be flight everyday.

We recently enjoyed a two week stay at this wonderful get away.
Communication was open, friendly, and easy throughout the process with the owner, Jag. He was a true gentleman, welcoming us in person upon arrival and checking in with us during our stay.
The apartment is true to the pictures and description. It's very clean and kept so by daily care from Nadene, who is friendly and unobtrusive.
We especially enjoyed how close we were to the ocean. The slatted shutters and veranda french doors were always open allowing for an ever present breeze and the sound of the ocean to flow through the space. And to our amazement, no bugs at all!
We would note for fellow travelers that this is not your typical rental that is specifically operated and designed for an influx of transient guests. This is Jag's home. As such, it is quite personal and filled with his extraordinary private art collection.
As a gated community we felt safe at all times. The pool and grounds are some of the nicest kept we've enjoyed at a compound this affordable. The grounds crew worked tirelessly and maintained a perfect space. (Note: In our opinion as seasoned Island travelers, this is not in an area we found conducive to safely explore outside the compound. There is little to no dining, shopping or safe walking pathways.)
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed this great place at a great value!

My friends and I absolutely loved our stay. Jag was extremely helpful to us, and communication was perfect. The housekeeper/chef Ms. Nadene, we love her. She took such great care of us. The home is beautiful and in a great location. This will be forever my home in Jamaica!

Our stay at Mr. Jag's villa was very enjoyable. Peaceful and relaxing with a beautiful view. Ochi was VERY hot during our stay however there was usually a breeze that helped. Overall, our stay was very nice, and Jag was a good host.

Corlene was wonderful, she is a God sent. It was my first time renting property and I can throughly say that it wasn't a disappointment. I will be coming back there. Jag checked in both on phone and in person. I enjoyed his company and his apartment is exactly how it is presented on Vrbo.

Christmas in Ocho
Rest and relaxation were just what we wanted for our Christmas vacation this year. The location of the apartment, very near town. The ocean, the temperature and the easy-going lifestyle of the island was perfect. The apartment was beautiful. Lots of light, space, and the terrace view. Having Miss Daisy was a bonus for our stay.
She is a gem. She was more than happy to prepare meals and opened our eyes to real Jamaican cuisine. She prepared her Pumpkin soup, a request for Jerk Chicken and the traditional Jamaican dish of Ackee and Saltfish.
Although I never got to speak with Mr. Mehta (the owner) during our stay, he was a most gracious host checking in to make sure that things were going well with our stay. Everyone that we met on the Island were very helpful and friendly. It made for a very Merry Christmas in Jamaica.

We stayed for a week and enjoyed every day. Mr. Mehta was a gracious host, the apartment and property were lovely, and we enjoyed Miss Daisy.

Spectacular view
Very nice property, spectacular view of the pool and ocean, small beach like area you can swim in. Kitchen could be upgraded a bit but overall the apartment was okay. But the view you can't beat being on the right level. Balcony good to relax or dine on. Mr. Metha very nice gentleman and host. Miss Daisy is an amazing and wonderful lady. Apart from cleaning she'll cook if ask to. Staying there I had the opportunity of seeing the real Jamaica from the little I saw. Mr. Semore the taxi driver delivered excellent service, a very humble gentleman with great mannerism.
My only issues were the kitchen, sitting on the balcony at night we could smell smoke maybe from a restaurant. Not much sidewalks if you're to go out walking and there is a large resort that owns about three properties on both sides of the street. Plus public beaches aren't free for even locals to enjoy. The people are indeed warm and very welcoming. The hospitality was awesome. I'll definitely return to see more of Jamaica.

Beautiful Apartment, Stunning views, and Miss Daisy
While we are experienced travelers, this was out first trip to Jamaica. We chose Mr. Mehta's apartment because of its location, the pool and closeness to the ocean. We weren't sure about having a housekeeper/cook. Well, that turned out to be the best part!
While many people go to Jamaica and stay at "all-inclusives," in essence, this is what this place is. The property consists of five buildings with each containing only 8-10 units. This unit is located in the building closest to the ocean. In fact, the apartment is only about 50 feet from it. It is wonderful to go to sleep to the sounds of the waves lapping the shore. The apartment overlooks the large pool (about 20 yards). My wife is a lap swimmer and it was great for her. It was never crowded.
In addition, there is access to the ocean via steps or a ramp leading to a white sand bottom. Very nice snorkeling right off of here.
The apartment itself is beautifully decorated, with the nicest artwork we have ever had in a rental. There are both beautiful paintings and ceramics created by Mr. Mehta, the owner. The bedrooms are spacious and airy. Our daughter visited for 8 days and she loved the second bedroom. The best attribute of the apartment is the large veranda overlooking the ocean and pool. We spent so much time here reading and enjoying all the wonderful meals.
this leads me to the best part of our stay - Miss Daisy. We weren't actually sure how this would work out, but do not hesitate on this. We love her! She is just a wonderful person. It isn't just that she keeps the apartment spotless, that she cares for your every need, and makes the tastiest meals, she is just a great person. My wife and daughter loved going to the grocery (we preferred General Foods over Progressive) and buying local ingredients. Miss Daisy would discuss what we wanted to eat, tell us what she needed, and then serve us incredible meals on the veranda. The food was so good we couldn't bring ourselves to go to a restaurant, figuring that it would most likely be a disappointment. Not only were the meals fantastic, they always had a Jamaican twist. Do not hesitate to take advantage of this.
The description of the apartment by Mr. Mehta is entirely accurate. I would add that the staff on the grounds are all great guys. If you are looking for utter relaxation, accompanied by great meals in an incredible location, you have found it.

This is a perfect two bedroom apartment. The views are amazing. The swimming pool and beach access are wonderful. Ocho Rios is a great place with many wonderful day activities. I would definitely stay at the property again.

By renting this unit you have the opportunity to not only enjoy the island but also the amazing people ~ who are not only fun but so welcoming.

Closest restaurants - Walking distance at Hermosa Cove there is a restaurant Christopher's - food was ok - the view and atmosphere AMAZING.
Tracks and Records a sports pub and shopping village is about a 5 minute walk. (sidewalks are not like Canada/US so be sure to walk facing traffic) Pineapple Craft Village is across the street. Be prepared for negotiating and saying no thank you.
Recommend for groceries - Progressive foods - prices are a little higher but everything is there. For produce - ask Miss Daisy to see if someone can get for you or go to the market
Best Italian, pizzas, pasta, great red wine - Cafe DaVinci within Island Village
Best authentic experience - Dave's Lobster Shack - be sure to have cash and see the sizes of Lobsters that are available
