About this house rental
Beautifully renovated with its original charm, this North Carolina historic landmark, the “Delany House”, is the perfect place to take in the best of Downtown Raleigh. It’s a 15-minute walk or minutes drive to outstanding restaurants, museums, coffee shops, parks, Red Hat Amphitheater, the Merrimon-Wynne wedding venue, and so much more.
And it’s equipped with the latest in technology: Fiber WIFI, smart TVs and streaming services like Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime.
We live in the neighborhood and are here when you need us. It's easiest to reach me on my cell or through the app. Thanks!
Staying in a downtown Raleigh neighborhood means that you will experience a diverse area with all kinds of wonderful people -- black, white, hispanic, LGBTQ, young professionals, families with kids, and elderly people who's kin settled here in the early 1900's.
Our own family has lived in this neighborhood for 15 years, and we love it! We raise our young children here, and have lots of different kinds of friends.
While certainly urban in nature, the neighborhood is considered quite safe.
If you're looking for a vibrant community with a mishmash of people, housing and places to visit with-in a 15/20-min walk, this is a great neighborhood for you. If you're someone who's intimidated by an urban feel with the occasional gritty street corner or wayward drifter, trying another part of Raleigh might be best.
We took careful detail to restore the beauty of the “Delany House”, while adding all the comforts of modern living: spacious kitchen with premium appliances and cookware, multiple smart TVs with streaming services, office space, private/fenced-in yard with grill station, al fresco dining and lounge area, and huge washer/dryer.
Pop over to one of Raleigh's neighborhood coffee shops or local hot spots — James Beard Award Winners, Ashley Christensen and Scott Crawford both have several spots nearby.
Walkable to parks and playgrounds, running/biking trails and of course, the best of Downtown Raleigh.
Our neighborhood is within immediate proximity to Downtown Raleigh’s best. It's a diverse and tight-knit community, considered the most up-and-coming in Downtown Raleigh. It’s a mishmash of all kinds of people -- young professionals, families with kids and retirees. While it is a downtown, urban community, the neighborhood is certainly considered quiet and safe. Please scroll down to read more about to neighborhood, so you know if it's right for you.
Looking to travel outside of downtown? We’re a close commute to I-440, which connects to the rest of the city and its surrounding areas, including Durham and Chapel Hill.
Parking is free, on-street, directly next to and in front of our home. We do not offer off-street parking.
In response to our reviews, we've lighted our check-out rules, so guests only strip beds and run the dishwasher. This helps our cleaning crew big time. And a new service provides ample TP, paper towels, cleaner, and soaps.
The History of our Home:
The Lemuel and Julia Delany House is significant for its association with Raleigh's Black community during the early and mid-twentieth century. Distinguished physician and business leader Lemuel Thackara Delany and his wife, Saint Augustine’s College professor Julia Delany, hosted many renowned visitors to Raleigh as either personal friends or as part of Raleigh’s “Green Book”, a network of homes offering friendly accommodation to people of color during the early/mid-century Jim Crow era.
The Delany’s hosted legendary artists, musicians, dignitaries and intellects, such as jazz musicians Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway, opera great Marian Anderson, actor Paul Robeson, and activist sociologist and founder of the NAACP, W.E.B. Du Bois.

The place was great, clean and spacious.

Our adult children and grandkids were in town with us for a wedding. The house is conveniently located to the venue in downtown Raleigh. So many fun restaurants, shops and a children’s museum for the kids. The host was super easy to work with and the house is well equipped with everything we needed during our stay. Highly recommend!

The renovations were just enough to make this historic home both charming and modern. Home is mostly as advertised as it had some updates that weren't listed. We were pleasantly surprised by the barn door on the front room rather than just a curtain. The street parking was the least favorable aspect but didn't detract from the wonderdul experience inside the home. Would rent again for an adult gathering.

The photos online do not depict what the house looks like now. The images were taken years ago. The house is not handicapped accessible and the bedding is dated with no mattress pad. The toilet in the master suite did not work. The place is close to downtown and would be worth the walk. Parking is premium because there is no driveway to the house. The one thing I loved was how the crown molding was done. The house should have been pressure washed before renting it out. especially the porch. It would have been nice to come into a house that was fresh as soon as you opened the doors this house was not. We left a day earlier because I was not pleased with the place. I will not book it again.

Stayed at this adorable house for the weekend when down for my daughter's baby shower. Home was clean and exactly as depicted on the website. Property manager was very responsive to questions I had prior to arriving and answered them in a timely manner. House was close to town and perfect for my needs! Would highly recommend and stay there again in a heartbeat!

Beautiful historic property! Wish there was something in the house to tell about the history of the property. Great location to downtown. It would have been nice to have a few chairs around the table in the backyard.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at the Green Book house in downtown Raleigh. The house is gorgeous with such tasteful decorations. Beds were comfortable, kitchen was spacious and the big center island was just perfect for this group of old college friends to stay up late chatting and catching up. The host left a comprehensive list of local restaurants and shops that we explored and all were fun. If ever in Raleigh again, this property will be our first choice for a place to stay! Thank you so much for opening your home to us!!!!!

We had a wonderful stay! The house was great, stocked with everything we needed. Great location to downtown and all our events. We couldn't have picked a better house with a great host!

This historic home is in a great location, only a short drive from everything we wanted to do.
The house was spotlessly clean and beds comfortable. The only negative is that there were very few towels provided-one bath towel each, one hand towel per bathroom and no bath mat to step out on. Also, the pictures showed a much more “decorated” space. All in all, a great place to stay.

Upon arriving at the home, we were already very happy with our choice. The home is definitely historic and charming. The beds were comfortable and the rooms spacious. The kitchen was nicely stocked with plenty of mugs for coffee/tea in the morning. We had ample towels and linens. The most important thing for our group was the comfort. We felt like we were guests in someone’s home. Highly recommend!

We so enjoyed having a place to rest during a very busy week in Raleigh during the IBMA WOB 2023.
It was a treat staying in the same house that Duke Wellington and Cab Calloway and many more rested during tours. The house allowed for quiet rest, private spaces to "get away" and the room to move about without being on top of each other. This is definitely on a "rent again" list for this very busy band.
The members of Full Cord Bluegrass were grateful for the space.

A clean, updated and well appointed spacious home. Plenty of kitchen space and things needed to feed your family comfortably. Near downtown Raleigh, plenty of parking and next to bus stop should you like to ride the bus. A historic Green Book home. Great communication from the owner. I highly recommend.

We were coming to town for a family wedding and thought it would be fun for some of us to stay together in a home instead of go the hotel route. It was exactly as pictured - but even better! Loved everything about the place. Very comfortable beds, plenty of linens and a well equipped kitchen. The porch was perfect to hang out on during some down time. We really enjoyed our time here and it was very close to the venues we had events to go to. Excellent communication and responses to my questions from Emily. Thanks for a fabulous place to stay. It really made the weekend! So much better to be together than in a hotel. Cheers!

The location was excellent and the home was beautiful. The kitchen is huge with a large central island. Plenty of sleeping options.
I would suggest that there be a roll of paper towels and some dishwashing tabs for the kitchen. We had to run to the store for both of those items. We also had trouble with the WiFi. It was resolved, but continued to go off and on.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Very, very comfortable home for our family who came in from across the country for a family wedding.
Pictures are great and it has an even bigger feel in person. Kitchen is fabulously equipped and very spacious. The house is very well equipped for babies. The front porch was our favorite place to visit with each other. Despite the 95 degree day it felt very cool sitting there with the overhead fans.
We did purchase a portable fan for the fourth bedroom which was a game changer for my son.
It was a perfect stay for our family who also loved the fact that it was a historical home that has been nicely updated.

The home was beautiful and charming. The neighborhood seems like it is turning around. Quite a few new homes in the immediate area. Quick response to my inquiry about checking in early since we arrived on an early flight. There could have been a few more towels and there were no wash cloths at all. Overall, it was a wonderful stay and an amazing home.

My friends and I had a great time staying at this historical home. The beds were very comfortable and had no issues during our time there. Highly recommend if you would like to be near downtown.

Furniture not as nice as pictured. Plastic bucket chairs at dining table. One bedroom had window w/no covering. No dishwasher detergent. No mattress pads on beds. No kitchen towels. Only 2 hand towels for 5 people. No lamps in living area, only overhead can lights. Couldn't reach property manager w/o VRBO password.

This house was perfect for hosting a gathering of local and out of town family for our first Christmas together post-Covid. The open and spacious kitchen and dining area were better than any of our own homes and made meal prep and serving a pleasure. The location was both convenient and historical; proximity to downtown was amazing. Couldn't have asked for a better lodging experience!

I was attracted to this property for our annual holiday gathering in Raleigh for Disney on Ice and Marbles Children’s Museum. Loved the open
floor plan, natural lighting, and historic features and updated kitchen, and bathrooms. Having everything on one level provided lots of indoor space to safely play for my four grandchildren; ages 7, 6, 20 months, and 17 months. There were 4 portacribs, and as many sound machines. The. house was clean and beds were very comfortable. We were able to park on the street directly in front of the house. It was a privilege to stay at the Delaney house.

We enjoyed our stay in Raleigh. It is fairly close to everything in downtown Raleigh. Home is nicely decorated and spacious. Kitchen is newly remodeled and has a very open floor plan. Bedrooms are nice sized with closet space. Overall, a great place to spend a weekend. Much more comfortable than staying in a hotel.

We came from multiple states to have family Thanksgiving. There were toys for small ones, plenty of sleeping space for 10. The master and bath was spacious. The owners gave ideas of what to do in Raleigh and were very responsive. The place was very clean with a nice backyard. Had a great time.

This is a lovely, lovely property. The photos look too good to be true, but they are accurate - the house really is this pretty inside. Very spacious too. So nicely finished and painted! This is a "Green Book" house with a historic marker on the front lawn, so that was another special treat.
