Staff were very accommodating and kind. There was a major train delay that got us in very late and the staff was understanding. Everything was clean and the rooms were very spacious. The hotel was located conveniently from the train station to the different sightseeing areas - all in comfortably walkable distance. We would definitely stay here again - highly recommend.

Nice staff but room just too small and badly laid out to be comfortable for 2 people. No natural light. Not a nice vibe. Left a day early as it was depressing. Of course no refund as it was booked on Expedia.

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed at in Japan. It’s conveniently located between the train station and the old town. Staff was super accommodating, welcoming and helpful. Great meal area, breakfast is great (western style), laundry, Onsen, spacious room. Very high quality, wish we could have stayed longer!

I was a little disappointed with this hotel after reading very positive reviews. The decor felt a little dated and in need of a refresh, lots of black walls which made it feel dingy, and I could only open the window in my room by 1cm. Didn’t see anyone else in the hotel at the same time as us, so it lacked atmosphere - only other sound was the music playing in reception. For cheaper prices, other hotels which I had considered booking were in a much nicer area (in the old town), and had onsen which could be used free of charge - walked past whilst walking round the nice areas of Takayama and regretted my decision. The onsen required a payment of 2000 yen per person which I had not realised. Overall disappointed for the price, compared to many other hotels we stayed on our 3 week trip in Japan (many for a cheaper price) this had less facilities, a less appealing location, and no nice touches such as welcome drink, bottles of water in the room.

We had an excellent stay at the MACHIYA hotel in Takagawa and would recommend again. The staff were super helpful, from recommending great places to eat to serving cookies and drinks after a long day of sightseeing. The location was also extremely convenient and easy walking distance from Takayama Station (10 min), morning market (10 min), historic district (5 min) and Hida open air museum town (20 min). It’s on a quiet street and has a modern, hip feel with jazz music and coffee/tea in the lobby area. We reserved the onsen in the evening and enjoyed a wonderful drink (sake, wine, beer, juice) with the onsen experience. The homemade breakfast was also quite delicious and filling.

Small charming boutique hotel. Much nicer than the bigger more generic hotels in the area. Rooms are tight but the staff were helpful and polite. Coffee was great. Maybe afternoon dessert (simple cookies or similar) would have made a nice addition. Overall, very nice stay.

The hotel was closed to the Takayama Old Town and train station only 10 minute walk. Breakfast was great; it was not a buffet which is better. The room was spacious. They offered 24/7 coffee and tea there is an espresso machine at the lobby. We really enjoy espresso 3 times a day. We highly recommended this hotel to anyone. We would love to come to visit again.

Beware of Room 202
We were pleased to leave this hotel after three nights of broken sleep. The air conditioning units for the front building are below the external wall of Room 202 (twin, futon beds) and the noise of these units reverberates through the futon/pillow all night long.
The friendly hotel staff were apologetic but well aware of the issue. We were unable to shift rooms as the hotel was fully booked. This would have been fantastic hotel to stay at otherwise.
Do not recommend this hotel.

Beautiful, comfortable property in a great location. We loved that it allowed us to combine the flexibility of a hotel with the charm of staying in a more traditional property with tatami rooms. Breakfast consisted of a panini or croissant, salad and smoothie, and was delicious both days even if it didn't offer any choice. Coffee and tea available all day, and the locally sourced green tea was amazing. The friendly, helpful staff helped us forward our luggage to our next location.
