## Emplacement
A city of Art and History, Vannes lies at the gateway to the Gulf of Morbihan, in southern Brittany, on the Marle estuary. You'll start by admiring the medieval ramparts, among the best preserved in Brittany, which offer a charming walk along the Garenne, a path dotted with gardens and pretty washhouses. After discovering the port, with its tree-lined quays including the Quai de la Rabine, take the 17th-century Porte Saint-Vincent, built to link the port and the historic district: you enter the old town via a street lined with old buildings, townhouses and timber-framed houses. Walk up to the Place des Lices, where the 1912 halles (covered market) await you. Dedicated to food products, they are open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday mornings, as well as all day Saturday. As for events, the Fêtes historiques de Vannes is held in mid-July. Jazz is featured at Jazz en Ville in July and August. Vannes is an ideal starting point for exploring the Gulf of Morbihan by boat: there are some forty islands, not including islets, each with its own characteristics. These include Arz, Ile aux Moines, Houat, Hoëdic...
