About this apartment rental
COVID-19 SPECIAL: As long as there are international travel restrictions in Portugal for booked dates, guests that now make their reservation, are allowed to change their booking dates without any penalty.
A renovated 3-bedroom apartment in an 18th century building. Thick, original walls and exposed wood make this apartment a truly unique place to stay for your family or group of friends. One of its most interesting characteristics is the extended space provided by the lovely mezzanine that overlooks the comfortable and attractive sitting room with a unique “salamandra”, a typical iron heating device from old times (no longer in use, though). Comfort and character are the distinctive features of this apartment. It’s also next door to beautiful national monuments, antique shops and great restaurants where you can listen to Portugal’s traditional song, Fado, which has been part of UNESCOS’s intangible heritage since 2011.
DESCRIPTION
This unique ground-floor apartment combines an ancient structure with modern interiors and equipment. Original tiles, exposed stone walls, an original wooden front door and an 18th century wooden frame, the so-called “Pombaline cage”, form the ancient structure (which has been preserved in its entirety). The modern interiors are refined, in tones of wood, beige, yellow and orange, and include a mezzanine (only 1.75 m high) with an extra bedroom, a sofa bed and a working area. The bedrooms are cozy with very comfortable beds, but no windows, a common feature of buildings dating from the 18th century. But there is an excellent ventilation system, so no need to worry! Actually, the temperature inside the apartment always remains pleasantly stable as the apartment’s walls are original and extremely thick.
As for the kitchen, you’ll love it! With its stone walls, original tiles and wooden table it’s like an old farmhouse kitchen!
NEIGHBORHOOD
Historical Alfama dates back to the time of Arab occupation (ca. 8th, 9th century AD), which is probably why it is packed with so many Fado venues, as the traditional Portuguese song is supposed to have been influenced by the Arab culture. Quite typical and not at all uncommon is to listen to Fado amateurs singing their hearts out from the inside of their own homes! This charming quarter is also jammed with centuries old monuments, quaint grocery stores, charming shops, a flea market and labyrinthine alleys. On foot, you can reach most of old, historical Lisbon. . On your way, you will also come across grocers, shoemakers and other artisans who have been selling their products for over 40 years! This is real, genuine Lisbon, with which most visitors fall in love at first glance.
You can also marvel, day in day out, at the glistening Tagus river from Alfama’s highest spots. The Fado Museum is another of Alfama’s highlights.
The apartment’s quiet alley is walking distance from some of Lisbon’s “relics”: 5 min to the Fado Museum, Panteão Nacional (where the Portuguese royal family and prestigious Portuguese are buried) and São Vicente de Fora convent; 10 min to São Jorge Castle or the Se Cathedral;15 min from one of the world’s most beautiful square, Praça do Comércio, and the elegant downtown buildings; a little further away, are the aristocratic Chiado and the alternative Bairro Alto with a trendy nightlife. Of course, you will also have to explore Belém – the Museum quarter. So please take a bus or a tram and spend some time there. Loads to see in Belém!
Nearby, less than a 5 min walk, runs the ultra-famous 28 tram line which crosses some of the best historical quarters, as well as Santa Apolónia metro and train station which links Lisbon to the whole country. The metro network reaches a good part of Lisbon. Metro and buses can also take you to Cais do Sodré train station which serves the beautiful Cascais and Estoril summer resorts, or to Rossio train station from where you can reach Lord Byron’s beloved village of Sintra.

We were very happy with our stay. We were fortunate enough to be able to check in early due to our early arrival. Carlos gave us some wonderful recommendations, especially his place for seafood! We had rainy weather, but having the washer, drying rack, and wonderful working heaters made our stay very enjoyable. The apartment had a lot of charm and was very unique. We would stay there again! Thanks for the great time!

My family had a wonderful week in Lisbon. The apartments was in a great location. The place had enough space for our family with 4 teenage kids.

We were a group of 4 adults. Loved the idea of having a comfortable home atmosphere in a historic home. This filled all the squares. We were able to walk immediately into the old area for restaurants and entertainment. Several grocery stores were literally around the corner. Paula was kind enough to get us in early as our flight arrived early morning. Huge help. Would strongly recommend this spot.

One of the most unique places I've ever stayed, in one of the best areas of the city. I couldn't recommend this place enough. The we comfortable slept eight guests, but the place could accommodate more. Just a street away there are shops, restaraunts, bars, and more, but it still if far enough removed to be peaceful and serene. We made friends with several of the business owners nearby and listened to plenty of Fado. Would 100% stay again.

Staying in Alfalma was great- access to everything. We did a day long bike ride with tour which was a highlight. The residence was very authentic- amazing design and architecture albeit a little small in terms of headroom for our American physiques- with 5 men at least 6 feet tall, the upstairs room and bathrooms are very tight. There was also a musty smell which I am sensitive to. Otherwise, the check on and response of the owners was excellent!

Apartment has so much charm and character. Everything you need is there, including a washer and clothes drying rack!. And the location is ideal for getting around the city. However it is slightly challenging to get luggage into and up the street.
Keep in mind that the bedroom on second level has a low ceiling difficult if you are over 5’8. And the bathroom is tiny. But for a inner city apartment that is as old as it is it’s amazing to have 3 toilets! We really enjoyed our stay. And so will you.

Perfect Apartment in Lisbon
The apartment was absolutely stunning, with all of the historic walls and stained glass around the doors. We were a family of 6 and did not feel cramped at all. Nuno was very responsive and was helpful in determining activities as well as restaurants. The air conditioning was the best we had in Portugal. We would highly recommend this place to our family and friends.

Super location
This apartment is super cozy in feel, with open kitchen/living room area for morning coffee and evening wine. The kitchen is very user friendly. The owners were very helpful and easy to get hold of. This unit is a five minute walk to Santa Apalonia train/bus/metro station. We could get anywhere we needed to thru that train station. The location is charming, right in the Alfama district. We were 2 couples and it was perfect for us.

Comfortable stay in Alfama
We enjoyed our stay here enormously the apartment was very clearly and accurately described and communication was very friendly and informative. The location is excellent for visiting Alfama with good connections to other areas, near to food supermarkets bars and cafes.

Smaller than it seems
We found the property to be a little smaller and darker than the photos suggest. The location was great for some things, not so great for others, but if you want to stay in the narrow streets and walk to the overlooks, this is not a bad spot. On a very quiet back street, except when the neighbors go in and out the big door and up the steps. We felt safe at all hours. You have to walk a few hundred steps to get Uber, but a taxi can come closer. Easy walk from the train station, but right up the hill from the cruise ships, so the streets get more crowded when they show up. Do NOT ride in a TUK TUK.

Location, Location, Location
What a great place this is, this was family visit and we had a great time. Easy walk to attractions and restaurants, well as easy as it can be in Lisbon! The Alfama neighbourhood is so picturesque. The management were so helpful in arranging pickup from the airport when we arrived and taxis for us when we left. Thank you so much.

Great location and cozy place.
Fantastic location in the heart of Alfama. The place was clean, and the owners very accommodating. The only thing was the ceiling upstairs is low I had to duck so if you’re 6’ plus you’ll have a tough time upstairs. We had our kids upstairs so it did not matter.

5 stars for the owners!!
What differentiates a good property from a great one are the people who manage it! The property itself was very good but more importantly were the owners. I felt like I was with family when communicating with Fatima. She made sure everything was okay and went over and beyond to ensure we were safe and had an memorable time in Lisbon and even organized a taxi for us to get back to the airport very early in the morning. Having someone like her and her team available to help us at any time truly made a difference in having an enjoyable vacation.

Great break in Alfama
Very authentic property, although you had to mind your head upstairs 🙃; well equiped; welcoming bottle of wine & nibbles. Our hosts were friendly and very helpful, telling us where to go etc. Great location for exploring with good transport links.

Unique and enchanting - old world charm with modern comforts!
This is more then a place to rest your head; it’s an experience! Distinctly unique from any other place we stayed on our trip, the apartment was also thoughtfully equipped by the owners with the comfort of the guest in mind. Nestled in the heart of Lisbon, we were steps away from festivals, markets, restaurants and historical sites. Most importantly, the owners thoughtfully prepared a comprehensive package outlining all of the transit routes, restaurant ratings and attraction suggestions. Would highly recommend to any traveller!!

The stay was perfect in every way!!
We stayed in Lisbon for 6 days during our family holiday and we truly had the best time ever!! Not only is Lisbon a great city to visit but the apartment was also above our expectations and even though I've travelled a lot, I've never experienced such a good service before! I highly recommend this place and we will definitely come back here in the future!!

Nice appartment, very near public transport and both very quiet. The internet connexion was nil
Mme JOSEPH

Very special experience
By no means this apartment is very special. The location in the Alfama is great and the surroundings ideal for evening walk-outs enjoying the Lisbon authentic life. The apartment is newly renovated and the people responsible for decoration did a fabulous job. There are many things to explore just by sitting and looking around. Beside preserving the old, the kitchen is modernly equiped with what you need for living. The overall feeling is very cosy. Fatima welcomed us and informed the family about all facilities, restaurants and points of interest in the vincinity with enthusiasm.
One had to get used to the fact that there is only one window facing the front yard which can be opend to have fresh air getting in (the pictures don't show this). You won't see the sky from the apartment. In addition, all sleeping and bathrooms are without a window which is cosy but also not expected from the pictures. Air in the rooms can get a bit musty after a warm night. The first floor is just 1.80m from floor to ceiling, we overlooked this information.
In summary: great place and location, nicely and individually decorated, cosy for those who are not open window maniacs. For a family of four it was perfect regarding space for more people it could get crowdy. Price range seems rather high.
