Set along the river, it can be a stunning sight during the golden hours right before sunset and after sunrise. A peaceful, scenic river path walk or bicycle route. You can even climb up to a forested shrine along the river path. The roof top onsen unfortunately doesn't look the photos because there are privacy screens on the womens side that block the view and the inside onsen windows are fogged up, also blocking the view. Meals were plentiful, we couldn't finish the generous sets. Reception staff were not welcoming, which is unusual as all our other stays in Japan the staff cheerfully greet you as soon as you walk in the door or step off an elevator. Very nice yukata and over jackets provided.
I reserved the shuttle a few days prior, as required by the hotel, via Booking.com messaging and our shuttle reservation was confirmed by the hotel, but the shuttle never showed up, so we walked the 25 minutes with our luggage. When we got to the hotel and I explained it to them, they did not even apologize and simply shrugged it off. So if you are depending on the shuttle pick up, you will need to be able to call the hotel directly to remind them that you have arrived. Because this hotel is cheaper than surrounding hotels, you also get louder, more inconsiderate guests and noisy groups. A couple of women were so loud, endlessly squawking in the onsen, ruining the experience, and then again in the lounge area and footbaths, talking loudly letting their kids run wild as we tried to enjoy the sunset. Our room was older and it had a very strong stale smell, so luckily the weather was mild and we could keep the windows open to chase the smell away. Ensuite toilet is small and cramped (knees hit the door and I'm 5'4") and you have to step up into it. But the room was clean, as were the public areas. The self-serve kimono and fancier yukatas, keta wooden sandals, were very impressive with beautiful accessories that you could dress yourself in and borrow for free, which was great for photo taking. Free use of bicyles, too. These complimentary amenities helped to make up for the other shortcomings of the hotel.

Our dinner and breakfast were delicious and had exceeded our expectations. I wish we had more time to purchase some of the local ingredients used in our meals. The river view from our room and the walk along the river were relaxing. The onsen is relatively small but it has a relaxing river view.

Very friendly and very, very helpful staff and owner! They made our stay there really special and unforgettable! Excellent Japanese breakfast (they even made a special vegetarian one when we asked, delicious too) wonderful view from the room and very good beds, also futons! We enjoyed the public bath of the hotel too and will visit again if there is a possibility!

the hotel owner is so nice that he took us to the titan museum and dropped us at the hita station. he even came back to the station again to give the ring I forgot at the hotel. what a kind man. my family also love onsen at the hotel.

Great location and view on the river. The onsen with a view on the river was very relaxing.
The hotel is pretty old and a little kitsch but it is well kept so it doesn't really matter.

The hotel is right on the river, with beautiful sunset views from the lobby and from my room. The room was a Japanese style room - great, except my allergies were a problem with the tatami (they were nice enough to switch out the feather duvet and pillows for me upon request, so that helped). I think in non-covid times (and summer) there are river dining options - I'll have to come back for that! Breakfast was DELICIOUS - see the photo! The staff was super helpful in recommending a place to eat dinner nearby, and called ahead to see if there was space for me. They offered to walk me over, even! So sweet. They were able to put my bicycle in a back room for storage, so I didn't have to leave it outside. It seemed there were bikes to rent too - I'd recommend that, as there is so much to see in town! The onsen was fine - outdoor bath overlooked the river, but bamboo screened, so not really a view. (Oh, and I arrived in town early and they let me leave a bag so I didn't have to lug it around on my bicycle - which left a pannier open to purchase things as I explored the old part of town - don't miss the sake brewery, and cafe/bakery across the street. Get the bread before they run out! There is a wonderful ceramics shop about half way between the station and the hotel too, but also be sure to get up to Onta to the pottery village, visit the small museum, buy some pots from one of the family run shops, see the water driven clay processing tools. Worth the 15 minute drive (or 90 minute cycle uphill if you are so inclined). The landscape along that road is just beautiful.
