About this house rental
Standing in the shadow of a 15th century peel tower, a sandstone house which has been created from two cottages and a barn. The house stands 100 yards back from the River Border Esk and looks over beautiful parkland. The area is steeped in history, when it was part of the debatable land, an area between England and Scotland where no rule of law applied until The Act of Union in 1603.
The house and tower are isolated from other dwellings and overlook the lovely Kirkandrews on Esk Church. The property is reached by a 400m long private tarmac drive and there is plenty of parking in the gravelled courtyard. The garden is mainly lawn with some shrubs and trees. The Border Esk has a prolific run of autumn salmon and whilst it was once famed for its sea trout, there is a smaller run of sea trout in the summer. Some fishing in front of the house is available to guests by arrangement and other beats on The rivers Esk, Eden, Annan, Nith and Tweed can be rented online through Fishpal. There is a tennis court nearby, which again can be used by arrangement. Well behaved dogs are welcome , but we would prefer them not to go upstairs or be allowed onto beds and chairs.
The house is a great place to get away from it all with family or groups of friends. It is ideally situated for exploring The Roman Wall, Historic Carlisle and Gretna Green. Being close to the M6 and A74 means that it does not take long to venture further afield. The Lake District is easily accessible, Ullswater can be reached in forty minutes.
Being only half a mile from the Border, you also have the Scottish Borders to explore. The ice cream in Langholm is a must, and you can look for Cashmere bargains in Hawick. Visit Drumlanrigg Castle, Floors castle and Hermitage Castle.
Wildlife abounds and there is great bird watching locally, on the river in front of the house, at Longtown Ponds and by The Solway. The WWT reserve at Caerlaverock is well worth a visit, particularly in winter and spring when tens of thousands of Barnacle and Pink Footed Geese roost there.
Bicycles can be hired locally in Longtown.

Our family group of 7 had the best time here! The house was huge and had so much character. It was in the countryside but not far from the conveniences of town. The scenery was spectacular and location very peaceful. We loved it!

This house was just the perfect setting for us to celebrate with friends and family after our wedding at Gretna Green. Richards was very helpful, arranging chairs and tables for us to have a meal. The setting was just beautiful and the house accommodated us all perfectly. Dogs and all. This house has lots of character, it is clean and well equipped. There is a lovely walk down to the river and a lovely little church. Thank you Richard for answering all our questions and being so helpful – Kirkandrews house will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

There were eleven of us, ranging in age from 18 months to 71. The beds were comfy and the house was warm, despite wet, windy and cold weather. There is an aga in the kitchen which keeps it warm, and plenty of radiators. There was plenty of crockery and cutlery and the dishwasher was always on.
There was a starter amount of cleaning things and toilet paper, etc, but that was fine for us for 3 nights.
It isn't luxurious but it is comfortable and we loved the house: it was perfect for us. Take your own games, as there aren't many there like there are in some places. The pool table is great and there are 2 TV's. It was good to have space to split up. Some of us canoed on the river 100 yards away.
There is ample parking in the courtyard. The owner was very helpful, especially when the original wooden high chair collapsed because someone had taken the bolts out of it and not put them back or told the owner.
We loved the house and would definitely return.

Fabulous Pre Christmas Break
Kirkandrews House is warm, spacious and well equipped. The layout is unusual and was fun to find your way around after a glass of wine! The location is peaceful and we enjoyed a walk along the river. We would definetly reccomend Kirkandrews House and hope to visit again.

Nice getaway
Lovely large property fitted our needs perfectly for a our get together and base to explore. As a group of 12 there was an adequate kitchen with generous dining and living space for us to cook eat and chill. Lovely walks along the river when it wasn't raining.

Stayed at Kirkandrews House for four days with some friends. We used the house as a base for exploring the Borders area in our cars, for which it is perfectly located. The fact there is so much secure parking meant it was ideal for us.
The house is very spacious, well equipped and was nice and clean on arrival.
We had a fantastic stay and will be back!

Firstly, the location was fabulous and, in fact, the photos are not reflective of the stunning views, roaring river and sense of outside space. The house, however, was not comfortable. There was adequate space (except for the kitchen which is small and very tired) but the downstairs furnishings were extremely uncomfortable, the carpets in need of replacement and there was plaster falling off the walls in places. Parts of the house were very hot and some of the windows upstairs did not fully open so sleeping was difficult but, then, the weather was unusually warm. Richard was charming and helpful but the 5* reviews on the HomeAway site, which have no comments are were posted during lockdown (?) were not indicative of the reality of the property. It is certainly not 5*. Again, the location is stunning but I do think it is overpriced considering its condition. (We also had an extra guest - a mouse, which I suppose is inevitable in a farmhouse).

This house is massive! We were a family of 11 which included 3 generations. Loads of room for us all and house and location are beautiful. Could do with a bit of maintenance in the bathrooms as the showers were a bit hit and miss and either red hot or freezing cold. The owner brought us a cake which was a lovely touch and absolutely delicious.

Wonderful winter wonderland stay
What a fabulous place, in a beautiful setting. Warm, well equipped and there's cake! Even the weather was lovely.
There was plenty room for 3 generations and the dog celebrating a Diamond wedding and 80th.
Would love to return; we could not fault anything, it was perfect.

Fantastic time at Kirkandrews House
We gathered family and friends at Kirkandrews House for a 60th birthday celebration. The house fully met our needs, big enough to accommodate everyone comfortably but also cozy and homely. The house had everything we needed in terms of linen, tableware, kitchen utensils etc...the garden and surrounding area are beautiful and we enjoyed some great walks with the dogs. Owners were very helpful and made us some lovely chocolate brownies on arrival. Would definitely stay again.

Lovely accommodation; great location; loved it
Loved the uniqueness and comfort of the property in a wonderful quiet location
Well equipped for large party of people
The immediate surroundings are peaceful and beautiful; the garden, river, church, walks.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay
Richard was very helpful on our arrival despite arriving late into the evening
The home-baked cake there to greet us was delicious
Enjoyed the use of the Aga in the kitchen.
Beds really comfy.
Bathrooms clean and lovely.
The three lads benefited from the snooker/ pool table when it rained.
It is a great base for visiting Scotland, Hadrian Wall, Lake District and Carlisle.
We have no hesitation in returning here again for two weeks next time

Jane Austen come to life
Great house, so much space and flexibility. Loads of bedrooms made the sleeping arrangements easy and lots of bathrooms. The downstairs gave plenty room for people to be together or have chill time doing their own thing. The pool table was well used. We found all the tools and equipment we needed in the kitchen and dining room - and even a separate drinks fridge! Richard was a brilliant host. Provided everything we needed and extras - a wonderful cake baked by his wife. The location is stunning with great walks along the river. We brought 3 dogs, who all had a great time.

Fabulous!
We stayed here for a week, 13 and 3 dogs for the weekend. Then reduced to 7 and 2 dogs for the remainder of the week. Lots of space to not get under each other’s feet. The bedrooms are all lovely and spacious. 2 sitting rooms, so we had a quiet one and a noisy one! The location is ideal for the Scottish Borders and North Lakes. If anyone is feeling romantic, can pop over the border and get married at Gretna which is only 10 minutes away.
All in all a lovely week in a lovely house.

Fantastic location for family trip.
Just returned from a wonderful stay at Kirkandrews with family and friends. This large property is set overlooking the river Esk and offers something for all.
Equipped with central heating and a number of fires, the house was easy to heat. The bedrooms are huge with ample space to store your clothes. Each room and bathroom was spotless when we arrived.
With plenty of games, Freesat and even a pool table. The internet proved reliable, allowing us to stream videos and use our Amazon echo.
The owners were super helpful and even baked us a delicious cake on arrival. The kitchen is well equipped with all sorts of utensils, cutlery and storage.
We used the Aga to cook although there is also a fully working cooker. Although there is a table in the kitchen we ate at the large dining table next door.
The grounds are huge with plenty of space for our pack of dogs. The buildings layout means that there is a courtyard to the rear with bags of room for cars.
From the front garden there is easy access to a right of way path along the river. We walked North towards the church and dissued Waverley line one day and to Longtown itself the very next day. The path is easy marked and suitable for all keen walkers.
Longtown is well equipped with a number of shops, take aways, petrol stations - with easy access to Gretna Gateway and Carlisle if you wish.
Definately the perfect location for family and friends get togethers!

If you're looking for somewhere to enjoy some family time together this is definitely the place! An amazing house and perfect location! The house is much bigger than I anticipated! The kitchen has an Aga and a conventional oven, going onto a massive dining room with table that could fit us 13 on and more! a lovely reading room then onto the pool hall which was brilliant, it barely got left alone! Different balls to play different games too! Then onto the TV room. Enough bedrooms for all and bathrooms which meant everyone had their own and all the beds and bedrooms were lovely and clean and comfortable. It actually felt like you were at home it didn't feel like we were in someone elses! There are enough rooms that everyone can either be together at once or be separate and have your own space even with a full house! The church is a short walk away and very interesting to go view - open between 10am-5pm each day. We walked to Longtown along the river which is a great walk, about an hour for those who are fast walkers like we are! Lovely pub there called The Tavern allows you to take food in and has a pool table they couldn't do enough for us! We are so hoping to be able to book the house again! Richard is a great host and lovely and helped us with any questions we had! Can't wait to come again!

We enjoyed this house for weekend stay, to celebrate my mum's 90th birthday. Nine people, varying ages from 20 to 90, in the group and our dog. Welcoming cake, much appreciated. Everything we needed, very warm clean and comfortable.
Richard was very helpful and very understanding when our car needed to be recovered. Enjoyed walks from the house. By the river and to Kirk Andrew Church. Plenty to entertain us, snooker table, table tennis and outside games, all provided. Would love to return.

There was a party of 10 family, friends and 3 dogs to celebrate my 60th birthday over a long weekend, Thurs to Mon. It was easy to find within easy reach of Longtown and Carlisle.
Plenty of rooms and comfortable beds. Nice touch with a home baked cake left for us.
Would recommend to anyone who likes the rural setting but it is close to Carlisle, Adrian's Wall and The Devils Postage visitors centre near Annan. We had a great 👍 time.
