About this villa rental
Welcome to Casa Tijera!
This elegant 4 bedroom, 4.5 bathroom private retreat sits on a high bluff with sweeping views of Mexico's Pacific Coast. Each bedroom has a king-sized bed and a private en suite bathroom with an outdoor shower. There are multiple outdoor patios and a courtyard for dining and scrabble. The cliffside swimming pool provides unforgettable views of the Pacific!
The house is secluded and remote, nestled among fruit trees and the natural beauty of the Pacific Coast. There is one a small, quiet beach that is a 15 minute walk down-hill from the house, which provides excellent snorkeling.
To get to Casa Tijera, you must drive approx. 20-25 min from the main road/highway that runs between Pochutla and Huatulco. If driving, coastal towns and beaches such as Puerto Angel, Zipolite, Mazunte are approx 45 mins to 70 mins away by car. This house is a perfect destination for an adventurous group of friends seeking a quiet and private get-away from LCD screens and the hustle-and-bustle of the modern world. Cell phone service on the property is spotty, and this is not a recommended destination for those who require 24/7 digital access.
This sustainably-constructed house is 'off the grid' and powered by solar energy. Although the system is perfectly sufficient for basic energy needs, please leave the blow-dryer behind :).

Loved this incredible and unique property. It is a bit remote, and that makes it all the more appealing for the more adventurous traveler. The dirt road to the house is actually in very good shape. Beautiful, comfortable, and we were well taken care of by Gaby and Melena. Gaby helped us with any requests, went for groceries as needed, and his lovely wife Malena made us breakfast each morning and prepped whatever food we wanted for the day or dinner. Wish we knew more Spanish so our communication could have been more in depth, but we managed! The bedrooms are screened in, the showers are open to the sky, and the rest of the house is open to the nature. Loved everything about this house!!!

Amazing views and hospitality
We just returned from 10 days at Casa Tijera and could not have asked for a better place to spend our vacation. We were four adults and four children - and every one of us agreed that it was the perfect vacation spot. Remote, peaceful and with a blanket of stars at night like you have never seen. Gaby and Elodia were so accommodating and the meals Elodia prepared were absolutely delicious. We enjoyed lounging and reading by the pool and soaking up the beautiful coastal views. Not having wifi turned out to be a great way to disconnect and really relax. We took water taxis to Playa Boquilla and Estacahuite (great snorkeling), went fishing, saw whales and sea turtles. (Elodia was even kind enough to prepare us an amazing dinner with our catch at the end of the day.) It helped to have a Spanish speaker with us who was fluent - but I am sure we would have managed regardless. The only drawback to the house is the long drive up the dirt road - it does not make coming and going by car easy. That being said - if that is the price you have to pay for a spectacular home on a cliff without neighbors - it's worth it. Casa Tijera is a great spot for anyone with an adventurous spirit looking to get away from it all. We'd love to go back!

Playa Tijera was simply magical. It is hard to express how much we enjoyed our time staying here. It is truly remote and you feel removed from the world when you are there. It now holds a special place in our hearts and we are already planning trips back.
We drove in from Oaxaca City and had a pretty strenuous 6-hour drive through aggressive mountains - do not attempt this if you have any motion sickness. I think we will fly in the future :) Upon arriving, Elodia had prepared a meal and Gaby met us at the road to escort us in. Our rental company did not have the jeep we reserved and we wound up in a low riding car, which was a rough ride in. Once we arrived, we didn't want to leave. Luckily, we didn't have to. Gaby made daily runs to the market for us and made our lives extremely easy. Over the next few days, we fell in love with Eloida, his mother, who cooked and taught us her classic recipes. We are a group of chefs and were so grateful for her authentic and flavorful cooking. Gaby arranged a boat to take us to nearby beaches. A highlight was surfing at St. Augusten beach, but it was fun to see the different vibe at all the other beaches nearby. Our general consensus was that we had no interest staying anywhere other than Tijera. It is the perfect place to cook, read, play games, and relax. No tv, no internet, no need for make-up or hair-dryers - a true getaway. The majority of the home is open to the outside so there are many ants who make it in and rodents will find their way into the kitchen if food is not put away. I am willing to trade that any day for an open-air bathroom that overlooks the ocean, but something to be aware of. There was one morning where our power went out but Gaby was quick to react and get it back on. It was a lovely comfort to have them living close by and they filtered in and out to check in on us in a comfortable and respectful way. They truly made our experience a special one.
My only criticism - the photos don't do it justice. The property is stunning, views are incredible, and there are multiple nooks and spaces to relax, spread out, and enjoy. Take a few friends who you can have fun yet be quiet with and enjoy life for a few days. The trip is completely worth it.

I loved the place: exactly as described. The surprise was realizing the distances: it is 25 minutes of dirt road and then at least the same to get to the beach. We preferred to drive than organize a water taxi as we like our independence. Water taxis will be much faster. The beaches at Bahia De Luna and Zipolite are both wonderful in their own style and very much worth the drive.
I liked the tranquility of the house, no humming sound as it is completely solar with no A.C.. It is a special place.
The caretaker Gaby is indeed very helpful and so is Helodia.

I took an all girls trip here in mid-January, and was impressed with la casa tijera. We enjoyed cooking at home, relaxing by the pool, and watching the amazing sunrises and sunsets. It was perfect for our purpose for the trip - to relax and soak up some sun.
Gabby lives in a private residence on the property, and was the groundskeeper who took great care of us while we were there. His mother, Helodia, made us beans, rice, and salsa on our arrival, so we could eat right away after our long day of travel. She will clean the house and cook for you for a small fee.
We bought groceries and withdrew pesos in Huatulco upon arrival. We took day trips to Zipolite and Bahia de la Luna, but la Casa Tijera was "home" and where we spent most of our time. In Zipolite, we went to yoga classes and just enjoyed the beach, good coffee, and dining out at La Providencia and Orale Cafe (mmmm coffee). On our drive home from Zipolite, we stopped and bought fish and meat in Puerto Angel.
Gabby booked a water taxi for us to take to Bahia de la Luna, which was one of my favorite days. The water was calm, warm, and relaxing. It was also nice to have wifi for a day and a restaurant to get drinks.
Our last night, Gabby drove us to Finca de Vaqueros for probably the best authentic BBQ meal I've ever had. The owner will come around and feed you bottomless mezcal, and I hear he also serenades you. The atmosphere, margaritas and food were just outstanding and the perfect way to end a magnificent trip.
La Casa Tijera provided unforgettable, pristine living accommodations in a secluded location that was close enough to attractions. If you're into an authentic experience and are looking to be off the grid a bit, this is the place for you. I'm hoping to make an annual trip to La Casa Tijera.
The drive to the house is on a bumpy dirt road. I recommend renting an SUV for a more comfortable ride up.

I traveled with three girlfriends for a relaxing week. We were completely blown away by the beauty of the location. The secluded house has breathtaking vistas and it feels like you have the ocean, sunsets, and sunrises, all to yourself. Gabby, the caretaker of the house that lives on the premises made us feel welcome, safe, and comfortable. The feel of the house is comfortable yet modern and lends itself to privacy and at the same time plenty of space to gather and celebrate. You will never want to leave once you arrive at Casa Tijera!
One morning I made a pour over cup of fresh coffee and watched whales in the distance just after sunrise. The beautiful scenes of the ocean and the wildlife I will truly never forget. My friends and I used the time to relax, read books, swim, and enjoy the local highlights. At a local restaurant, I ate the best beans and steak I've ever tried. We bought fresh fish one day at the local town and cooked delicious meals in the ample kitchen. The vacation was perfect. Cannot imagine a thing that could be better at Casa Tijera.

We had a magical week at this house on a cliff. There were 4 of us, mid thirties, well travelled city livers with the goal to relax in the sun away from tourists and soak in the heart of some local Oaxaca life. We got this and much more then we could have hoped at this lovely family home.
Each morning we woke up to migrating birds and sealife (including whales) with a front seat view from high up on the cliff. 30 minutes from Pocutla and puerto angel which is ideal for day trips and groceries.
The caretaker family that lives near by on the property was friendly and helpful. We asked if the mother of the caretaker could cook us a few authentic meals and they were absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the family so much they became a highlight of our week and although spoke little english (and us very little spanish) they helped us enjoy the house to its fullest. We even made our own tortillas on an outside oven.
If you love nature and wildlife but also prefer to stay in a comfortable oasis Id highly recommend this home. Its decorated beautifully, the rooms are spacious and we felt it was luxurious and low key.
The house itself is down a long windy dirt road so if you are with children under 3 years, or looking go in town more then once or twice a day- this may not be the place for you. If you are like us looking to unwind and enjoy a secluded peaceful holiday with local charm this is the place.
We were very sad to leave.

My husband and I have stayed at Casa Tijera several times over the past 3-4 years. It is such an incredible place. Unspoiled, quiet, breathtaking, full of local culture and splendid star-filled nights! If you are looking for a location with panoramic Pacific Ocean views in Southern Mexico with open air bedrooms along with a gracious house staff then look no further. The owners are incredibly helpful at suggesting/assisting you with your travel plans from an excursion to Bahia de la Luna (my favorite beach spot) via a short boat trip from the end of the street, trip up the coast to Zipolite or Puerto Escondido, or down to Huatulco. The airport is a short 30 minute drive from the home and there is about a 15 minute drive down a peaceful dirt road through the local village and countryside ending at the private residence. Gabby, the on site coordinator for the home is easily available and stays on site to help make your stay a perfect experience. His mother, Helodia, is a FABULOUS cook and available for extra help as needed around the home for a very reasonable fee. Honestly - I couldn't imagine a better place to take a group or friends/family and enjoy being 'away' from it all. If you need WiFi - make sure to look into that before going or consult with the owners who could help you with that. It's actually nice being disconnected while at the home. Most places that you go to (i.e. Bahia or Zipolite) will have WiFi easily available for you. If possible, go into town at Huatulco (a short 25 min drive in the other direction from the airport) to stock up on food supplies/wine, etc. prior to going to the home. You won't want to leave once you get to Tijera!!!!!

A Great Escape
Over five visits, my wife and I have spent a total of seven weeks at Casa Tijera during January, February or March. When I tell people about the house I say, “It’s not for everyone, but if it’s for you, it is Paradise.” The site is stunning. The architecture is spectacular. The winter weather is splendid – warm and dry in the daytime, pleasant at night. During a week’s stay it is not unusual for us to sight a pod of dolphins or Humpback whales. An after-dinner swim in the pool with a canopy of brilliant stars overhead is about the best way I can think of to end a day. In short, for us it is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate.
Casa Tijera works for us because we and our friends who accompany us are curious, self-reliant, flexible and optimistic travelers. We love to cook, read, play games and relax by the pool. We enjoy driving into San Pedro Pochutla and Puerto Angel to get fresh fruit and vegetables at the market, perhaps with a stop for ribs, sausage and a cold cerveza at a charming cowboy restaurant; taking the water taxi to Bahia de la Luna for lunch and the beach; and making occasional excursions to Zipolite for massages, cocktails and dinner. We appreciate the security provided by Gaby, the friendly and ever-helpful caretaker, who lives on site with his family. And we have been privileged to help the owner of Casa Tijera establish a pre-school in El Vigía, the village through which you pass en route to the house from the main road.
So, what’s not to like? In our view, nothing. We are not the sort of people who are intimidated by cultures, languages, customs and conditions that are different from ours, so we enjoy exploring and experiencing the nearby towns and coasts. We are not daunted by fact that Casa Tijera is five miles off the nearest paved road; to the contrary, we revel in its relative isolation, its fantastic site atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific, and the fact that it is completely solar powered. We are happy that there is no television and don’t mind weak or intermittent Internet service. We enjoy the challenge of communicating with Gaby, his family and the people in the nearby village in a combination of gestures and dictionary-aided Spanish. If we sound like your kind of folks, then Casa Tijera is your kind of place.

Simply Amazing
My husband and I are busy, overworked, and stressed out most of the year, with one notable exception -- our annual trip to the stunning state of Oaxaca, Mexico and the fabulous Casa Tijera, when we leave our cell phones and laptops at home and rediscover what is truly important in life. The house is aptly named, as you will see when you visit and the tijera "scissors" birds keep you company way overhead as you lounge in the infinity pool while enjoying the most expansive panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean available anywhere, with not another soul in sight. The house itself is breathtakingly stunning - authentically Mexican in every way, from its thatched roof, tiled floors, stucco walls, soft bed linens, and open air spaces, to the warm and friendly presence of the caretakers - a mother and son combination who treat every guest like a member of their own family. A highlight is to hire a "launcha" (water taxi) to pick you up at the bottom of the hill in the morning for a quick and scenic ride to a nearby town or beach, and to order some fresh octopus to be brought for you when you are picked back up at the end of the day. Cooking dinner "at home" has never been more delicious or fun, with great local seafood, fruits and vegetables to prepare while sipping local wine and watching the indescribable sunset each evening. Seclusion, tranquility, privacy, and beauty are unmatched at Casa Tijera. Simply put: It is a one-of-a-kind vacation destination. We will continue to return for years to come, because nothing else compares.

Spectacular views
When we researched sites for a destination wedding we were fortunate to find Casa Tijera. The hosts knew of our plans and everything was in place to make our stay really special. There were many porches and terraces overlooking a 270 degree view of the beautiful Pacific coast. The beach below the house was a short walk and provided the perfect site for our wedding. Each room was beautifully and comfortably appointed. including a private bath and shower. Everyone had their own retreat but there were many areas in this house where we could all assemble as well. This was a great place for a romantic holiday or a group of friends who just want to enjoy some time "off the grid." The local citizens were both helpful and friendly. There were markets where we could shop for local handicrafts as well as groceries. We were also able to enjoy several lovely evening meals in the local restaurants in Portchula and Puerto Angel. I am looking forward to returning when I need to recharge. Thanks for a great visit!
