About this house rental
History meets comfort at this original Canaan Valley home! Cooper Homestead is a true blend of all the “things” we humans enjoy and the history we love to hear about. One of the first families to settle in the high Allegheny Mountains, the Coopers farmed, timbered and raised 9 children 3200”above sea level. Built in 1882, Cooper Homestead is the only original Canaan Valley cabin still standing. And now it is available for you to rent! Renovated just enough to offer a full kitchen, laundry center and yes-inside plumbing, the homestead sits on 10 acres of super scenery and spectacular views. Enjoy some porch time. Prepare your favorite meal. Take in the views and witness true tranquility. Visit and imagine this pristine property filled with a large hard-working family. You can feel the history and find the modern as you experience this one of a kind lodging opportunity. The homestead is most comfortable for a couple or a couple with one or two children. Cooper homestead is such a serene and scenic property. The place has a very rustic and authentic charm. While it was mostly clean, we had to open windows for a cool breeze and the sills were full of dead flies. Part of the rustic charm. The neighbors are close and a bit noisy, but not so much that it ruined the vibe. The water wasn’t drinkable and the kitchen sink had no hot water which made for difficult kitchen cleaning up after meals, but the stove is right there for heating up a pot of water. More of that rustic charm. Extremely convenient for access to hiking and sight seeing. Overall, for the price, it was a very pleasant stay.

The homestead was wonderful we loved it so very much! My husband and I didn't want to leave. We have been staying in Canaan Valley for 28 years several times a year. Cooper's Homestead was comfortable, the beds were excellent, the couch and chair could use an upgrade if you are planning on relaxing as my husband and I did. We are extremely busy and this was the first time in years that we stayed in Wednesday-Sunday! The tub was was an experience and of course made me appreciate mine so much the more. The stairs were NOT a problem for us and any well-rounded person would see immediately that you should use caution. We take for granted what we are given each day... and how blessed we are in 2024 but for those of us in 2024 that wished we lived back in the day this is your house! It is an excellent reminder of back then with the conveniences of today.

Amazing property, set well back from the road with a lot of privacy, very cozy and comfortable, wonderful views. The only downside was a housefly infestation that littered the floors and windowsills with dead flies every morning, and kept buzzing around the bed at night - along with the occasion scratching that I suppose was a mouse. The flies need to be dealt with - once they are, I would make this a 5-star review.

A lovely property. You're closest neighbors are horses. A lovely view from the porches. The air is as sweet as cold spring water and then balanced with floral from all of the wildflowers in the meadow.
You're close to Davis and Thomas as well as Blackwater Falls State Park.

The house had cob webs, water stunk and the csble did not eork the whole stay until the last evening we were there. Plus the entire area had nothing to do. If you want time to do nothing, then yhis is the place.

We loved the stay in this restored log cabin. Great setting and view, well stocked and up to date. The stairs are pretty steep, but no problem for us.

Reviewer Comments:
The cabin was in a good location and available for our dates, so that part of it was good. It is a cute little cabin, and with a little work it could have been a great experience. The bad: The cabin has a very bad ant and fly problem. Ants were all over the kitchen, and by the way ant traps were all over the place it's a known issue. We had to store all of our food in the fridge and in sealed containers. We called the management office and were told they used a professional pest company, but actually did nothing while we were there. We sprayed raid and wiped everything down with bleach wipes, multiple times, but still had problems. The back bedroom was not usable as there was a fly infestation. We killed as many as we could, over a dozen or so, and then closed the doors and left them alone. At one point we counted 12 on a single window. The house looked like it had been hastily cleaned. There were dead flies everywhere, cobwebs over the lights in the bathroom, and it didn't look like the couch cushions had been cleaned under, ever. There were also stains in the rug in the living room. The coffee pot had not been cleaned.Other minor issues: No dishwasher soap, the bathtub is old fashioned and impossible to use without getting a little water on the floor/walls. Some type of tray to hold soap and shampoo would have been nice. The house is dark as lighting was horrible. The good: Plenty of clean towels and the linens on the beds were clean. We did enjoy the deer and the wild turkeys right outside the house and it was very quiet and peaceful. If the property managers would ensure the house is free of ants and flies, and cleaned a lot better than it was when we were there, we would probably give it 4 1/2 stars.
4.6
A delightful house, thoughtfully restored, yet retaining much of the character of the original cabin. Great bedrooms with very comfortable bed. Only problem, and it was not minor, was the presence of ants and flies. The ants were ubiquitous and the only safe place to store food was the refrigerator or tightly sealed bags. Flies kept to the one bedroom window, but there were dozens buzzing around it when we arrived and not a fly swatter in sight. I marked "cleanliness" lower only because of the insects - the house itself was spotless.

Reviewer Comments:
The house was fine, and we rented it again because before it had always been peaceful. However, this time not only was the guy there mowing again, he was very pushy and told my husband to stay away from their equipment at the barn and not to touch anything over there. We have no reason to go there and had never bothered anything during any of our previous stays, so he had no reason to intrude in this manner. Then we were not informed that construction was going on at the barn. This same guy was over there doing earth work during our stay. They had the drive blocked when we came back from hiking and it was really noisy. We went there to get away from noise, not to have more of it. When I called the office about the contacted the man and he did quit, but it would have been nice to know ahead of time that there was work going on in an area that was once part of the rental space and given the opportunity to change property. The house was comfortable as usual, but the intrusive man and construction really affected our visit. We will not be staying at Cooper again, even though we had stayed there 4 times before because we liked to peace of it. I spent all year on a construction site, that was not what I wanted on vacation. While I will use best of Canaan again for a rental, I was disappointed that there was no notice that construction was going on and there was no offer of any kind for compensation for a disturbed stay, even if it would have been just being able to move to another place, or a free night on the next stay.

This cabin is so awesome. Lots of old charm with plenty of upgrades to make it very comfortable. The location is perfect and the views, especially from the upper porch, are spectacular.

This property is amazing. If you like solitude, if you enjoy being in nature, if you appreciate history and getting a taste of what it might have been like to live it, you’ll enjoy Cooper Homestead. The house is modern enough you won’t feel like you are Davey Crockett, but still maintains enough of its historical character to imagine you could be. The view and sounds from the front porch swing, where you’ll want to spend a lot of time at the house if the weather permits, are worth the stay alone. They gaze out onto empty grassland all the way to the mountains in the background, with only the hint of a roofline off in the distance, and the sounds of the birds and the breeze to greet you. You’ll feel almost as if you’re all alone in the valley. The house has everything you’ll ‘need’ but don’t expect luxury, it’s an 1800s log cabin after all. The interior original doors are crooked from the house settling, as one would expect, and some don’t latch properly, and the floor isn’t perfectly level and even, and the beds are comfortable enough but squeak when you get in. If you’re the type of traveler that’s picky about those kinds of things, then Cooper might not be for you. But if you’ll look at the crooked doors, and uneven floors, and marvel at how a log house this old could still be in such great condition, and see those ‘flaws’ as part of the history and character of the place, then Cooper will not disappoint. “This is so cool” was uttered many times throughout our stay as we noticed more and more of the house’s quirks and charms. If we return to the Canaan Valley in the future then Cooper is where we’ll want to stay. I’ll echo other reviewers that the stairs are steep and narrow, as you would expect in a house of this era. We were able to get our suitcases up and down carefully, but I wouldn’t recomm

This is our 4 stay at this property, we like how peaceful it is. My only negative comments are that when we arrived the cleaning crew had sprayed some kind of air freshener in the house and it was horribly strong, it took hours to fade with all windows and doors open. One of the reasons we rent from here is they typically did not have heavy scents in the property, we are both allergic to scents so both of us had sore throats for days from it. The other issue is a person showing up in the evening of the first day to mow the grass, it is very loud and one of the reasons we stay here is it is quiet. We come here to get away from the noise of the city only to have it follow us. It would be nice if that could be done before someone arrives.

It is a charming historic house. It had all the accommodations including fresh towels, dish towel, soaps. We thought it was a wood burning stove so we brought wood but it was gas so no need for wood. The change in weather brought out ants and flies but it is an old home so we were not bothered and just kept food wrapped up. The kitchen has great supplies including crockpot, trays, bowls….we cooked everything. Great size for 2-4 people. Chairs are antique and small for large people…they need to be glued but we just avoided the chairs. Great location to ski and not far from Davis, Thomas and Blackwater. Great value for enjoying the entire house.

Getting There: i would recommend at least looking on google maps once you have the address so you can see that there is a garage opposite the driveway, as the cabin is set well back from the road and the little number sign given as part of the directions isn't that easy to see in the dark (it's further down the drive than the barn with grain tower).
Property: Beautiful location, very will appointed given its age, keeps warm. There were still a few ants, even in the middle of winter, but as long as you don't leave food out and open it's not a problem. The stairs are cabin stairs, so be forewarned. There is only a half bath upstairs, and the 'master' is access thru the other bedroom. not an issue for a family, but if other than a family group that should be taken into consideration also. There was a resident Wren in the house while we were there, got in twice (thru attic stars??), but was as happy to leave as we were to let it out.
The area: Canaan Valley was wonderful to visit, and i will definitely come back. Access to both Timberline & Canaan Valley for skiing is very simple, just take a left at the end of the driveway. Most food options are in Davis, but you can made do for a few days with what is locally available.
4.6
We wanted something different. From previous reviews we tempered our expectations. Loved the uneven floors, the non-square doorways, the charm of the place. We were there when it got down to -31 and the house was plenty warm. It's the closest we've come to agreeing on a property we'd really consider owning in Canaan Valley.

Overall experience met expectations. There were adverse events that would impact normal vacation goers who are less comfortable in certain living spaces: Dead mouse in upstairs bedroom, lots of ants in the kitchen, lots of house flies congregating along the windows, the water went out one night when it got very cold and the heaters in the craw space were not turned on, but was resolved the following afternoon, left behind articles from prior guests in the dresser. Its a very old home, so you expect to have pest issues. The trip was covered as a gift, but the cost per night is too high for the conditions mentioned above and I would not stay here for the price, if I were paying for it. Location and the management were great.

We never wanted our stay at Cooper Homestead to end. This house is a true rustic beauty, a gracious and special old homestead that has received a loving makeover that is careful not to overshadow the home's history and original features. Picking up the keys was a breeze, and the property was easy to find. We arrived in the dark, with a cold wind blowing, and were delighted to find the gas fireplace burning and the house toasty-warm.
We stayed four days over Thanksgiving. The kitchen is fitted out with everything we needed to cook a full Thanksgiving dinner, and it was wonderful to eat with the family at the kitchen table, like generations before us.
The homestead was built by one of General Robert E. Lee's bodyguards after the Civil War, and it was exciting to experience this piece of history for ourselves. It snowed whilst we were there and the views out of the second floor windows to the hills beyond was just magical. We took long walks across the property with our dogs, and enjoyed reading in the living room and playing the games provided.
A couple of things to note – first off, this is NOT a luxury stay. The house is truly rustic, with rough edges, uneven floors and even areas of the walls where old newspaper is still plugging cracks! We loved those qualities and were so glad the house hadn’t been renovated to remove all of its original character. If you are up for a real piece of history and a very special location, then this is for you.
Secondly, be aware that one bed is a large double, the other is the size of a king single – fine for two smaller kids, but our tweens found it a bit of a squeeze. And I’d recommend taking your own pillows as those provided are in need of an upgrade.
Third, the stairs, which are rough-cut timber and quite steep and narrow. If you are elderly or have any mobility limitations, you might find them difficult.
Finally, a few reviewers mentioned ants. Yes, we were visited by a small number of ants, but this is an old house and some bugs are to be expected. There are ant baits placed around and a can of spray provided – make use of it and don’t let it spoil your stay!
I hope I’ve managed to convey that Cooper Homestead is a really special place. To think it was almost knocked down to make way for a subdivision, before it was saved and renewed! We’re thankful to the owners for sharing it so that we had the chance to experience this historic stay in West Virginia.

We didn’t see ants. The fly sticker is out of sight.. one bed was comfy and didn’t see dust flying when We touch the bed. so no clue where bad reviews came in. I just think people have high expectations when this is a old homestead with a lot of update with modern kitchen, bathrooms, electric , ceiling fans internet and cable tv. We were happy to it’s half bathroom upstairs. Please understand that it’s older-homestead build in 1872 so it would be very difficult to design a full size bathroom upstairs plus we can take shower after a day of hiking without going upstairs getting stairs and kitchen dirty.
Stairs were hard to get by but understandable due to design to allow a great size kitchen that is very well stocked with kitchen equipment and nice plates, real silver and glasses. Towels were better than average compared to hotels.
The view every day was amazing being next to wildlife refuge. We saw deers birds butterflies rabbits .. It was a feeling having to sleep in a modern farm house. Wifi works great. Washer dryers works. Older tub but we still took nice hot showers.
We are not related to the owners. We are giving honest reviews. We are city people but not snobs nitpicking. It’s a great house to stay in for a few nights. We including our service dog would be happy to go back again.

We had the best experience in WV while staying at the cabin.
Positive: convenient location, beautiful view from the deck, pretty secluded (just saw the neighbors a few times), clean, lovely living room with the fireplace, internet + dish (the wifi was a bit slow, but better than nothing!), fully stocked, having dishwasher and the washer + dryer was a plus.
The negative: no communication from the management after I booked the cabin up until the check in day, the furniture was much more outdated than it appeared on the pics, the drawers upstairs were in a very poor condition, the toilet seat was broken, the shower was a challenge, ants everywhere in the kitchen and living room. Nothing major, but out of it all my main problem was with the creaky bed upstairs. Nevertheless, it a beautiful cabin, I would even give 5 stars, but it was disappointing to see that the feedback provided by the previous reviewers to the management was kinda ignored, e.g. slippery bath tub, ants, broken toilet seat.. Overall, it's a very decent value for the price. Definitely recommend if none of the negatives above may be an issue for you.

We checked out a day sooner and hence gave up a night worth of rental fee as we could not spend an extra night suffering at this property.
The property is very nice, and we loved the structure, the history behind and the surroundings. We certainly did not like the following at the property which forced us to leave after 2 nights only.
1) the queen bed in the master bedroom has seen better days. The mattress seem to tilt on the left side likely from prolonged use and it creaks very loud to the point that we could not sleep during any of the two nights. The linens were very dusty and let out a puff of dust each time we sat on it. We could not spend another sleepless night on it!
2) the bathroom tub does not drain well and the curtains smell really bad. We could not wait to reach home to shower comfortably. The bathroom with shower is on the lower level and the bedrooms are on upper level!
3) couch in the living room smells bad like urine.
We have never written any online reviews previously and did not want to write this either. We wrote directly to administration multiple times and have not heard a word. We certainly would like the administration to address some basic hygiene and comfort issues which most people take for granted when they spend this kind of money for 3 nights.
Hope they fix these issues so that future customers can enjoy the property which otherwise has the potential to be a wonderful retreat!

We enjoyed the peace and quiet of our stay. As stated on the website, the cabin was built in 1872. My husband and I were thrilled to stay in the 150 years old cabin though our teenage daughters didn’t quite share our excitement. The weather was cool for early August. The area is just beautiful! A very nice getaway.

Property was nice. Cabin could have been cleaner. Lots of ants in the kitchen.
We didn't like that the bedrooms were upstairs and bathroom with the shower was downstairs. Shower/bathtub was very difficult to get in and out

Great location!

Loved the location and the authenticity of the cabin. The house furnishings were very pleasing and had everything needed, except for a tea pot or kettle. 4 star instead of 5 because: Numerous ant traps all around the kitchen, and a sticky fly catcher hanging right by the fridge. The smaller bed was more like a large twin size and the mattress sagged in the middle. The other bed was very comfortable. Front porch had 2 great Adirondack chairs and a porch swing. The swing was nice but not so comfy if sitting longer. Ours was a summer stay so we spent lots of time on the porch. All in all a great place/setting and I would stay there again!

Property was nice. Cabin could have been cleaner. Lots of ants in the kitchen.
We didn't like that the bedrooms were upstairs and bathroom with the shower was downstairs. Shower/bathtub was very difficult to get in and out
