Frequently asked questions

Where Is Lorne, Australia Located?

Lorne is a small coastal town in Victoria, two hours southwest of Melbourne. The nearest airport is Melbourne Airport, so a rental car is recommended. Plus, driving offers the flexibility of partaking in local excursions, and the freedom to explore the beauty that lies ahead on The Great Ocean Road.

What Is Lorne Known For?

Lorne is a popular surfing spot and summer town along the legendary Great Ocean Road, in an area packed with gorgeous waterfalls. Due to the waterfalls, the bush behind downtown is filled with over 30 miles of walking trails. Lorne has been a holiday haven for over 100 years, as many restaurants have sprung up and remained to feed the stream of visitors. It can be a destination in itself but is often a preferred stop for road trippers driving along The Great Ocean Road.

What to See in Lorne?

  • Erskine Falls: Five miles out of town is one of the most popular waterfalls in the area. Erskine Falls is an easy walk from the parking lot. The waterfall is in a lush, forested setting with well-developed walking trails that include stairs. Wear good shoes as the terrain can be slippery. Located just south of town, lower Kalimna Falls is another beautiful choice with a cave and waterfall you can stand behind.
  • Teddy’s Lookout: The elevated observation deck known as Teddy’s Lookout is a short walk from the parking lot and creates a spectacular view of the Great Ocean Road, the sea, and Lorne. It is located at the southernmost end of downtown and at the end of George Street. Lorne Pier is another favorite vantage point as it extends a good distance into the deep blue-green water.
  • Lorne Beach: Stroll along this stretch of beach, smack dab right in the middle of town. Lorne Beach is the perfect length for a moderate walk. The beach is dotted with rocks along a rugged coastline and it is fairly easy to go from the beach and into town whenever desired.

Popular Destinations Near Lorne in Australia

  • Great Otway National Park: Follow the Great Ocean Road an hour south of Lorne to Great Otway National Park. Apollo Bay is the last town that offers accommodations and dining before the park begins. The environment is a blend of lush rainforest, rugged coast, waterfalls, and fern gullies. Surf some of the best breaks in Australia, or immerse yourself in history at Cape Otway Lightstation. There are opportunities for long-distance bushwalks, including the Great Ocean Walk (which takes about eight days) or the Surf Coast Walk (which might take two or three days).
  • Twelve Apostles Marine National Park: The world-famous collection of limestone pinnacles stands in the ocean along a sheer coastline visibly cut from the same material. Twelve Apostles Marine National Park is a section within Port Campbell National Park, a few hours from Lorne depending on the route taken. Despite the name, there are only seven limestone stacks instead of 12 — though there are many others in the vicinity including “London Arch” and “Razorback.” This expanse of coastline is also known as the Shipwreck Coast because it is the final resting place for over 200 boats that suffered from poor navigational equipment in the challenging waters of the Bass Strait.
  • Grampians National Park: Three hours north of Lorne into the hinterland is the easily overlooked Grampians National Park, recognized by climbers for its rock formations, and also known for hiking, camping, and wildflowers. At times, the landscape feels otherworldly, as the sandstone mountains jut out of the plains. The town of Hall’s Gap is the main entrance to the area.
  • Melbourne: The dynamic cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne is often a necessary and fulfilling departure point for trips to Lorne and The Great Ocean Road. There is often an equal passion for the thriving art scene as there is for boisterous sports, both brought together by the common thread of world-class food and nightlife. Don’t ever skip Melbourne when an opportunity is presented!
