About this apartment rental
Welcome to the Culbertson House! Unique and a little quirky, beloved by the resident-owners and dozens of guests alike, this 100-year-old house occupies a rare space in the town of Brattleboro, a spot that is quiet and peaceful and on the edge of the forest, yet close to all major thoroughfares. We are 1.5 miles from downtown Brattleboro, with its offerings of fine dining, unique shopping, diverse cultural entertainment and funky nightlife. The major ski areas of Mt. Snow and Stratton are within a 40 minute drive.
In the 1950's the house belonged to the legendary Ely Culbertson- the "Father of American Contract Bridge" and author of many books on bridge as well treatises on world peace and utopian world government. He was a character!
The house is currently divided into three apartments. Your hosts live in the center apartment and there's another cute 1-bedroom at the front.
The beautiful wood-paneled walls of the Studio, the warm hardwood floors, views of the gardens, full bath, modern kitchen and tasteful tasteful decor make this space comforting, welcoming and happy. We have attempted to reflect the intense artistic character of our community by decorating the studio with lots of artwork, most of it created by your host, Julia, as well as other object d'art to give the space as artsy a feel as our community itself.
The location is ideal; the forest behind and beside the house gives a feeling of being in a quiet, secluded home in the woods, yet the apartment is only a half-mile from Interstate 91 and a few hundred yards from Rt.9, the main east-west state highway leading to western Vermont and New Hampshire.
We are proud of our flower gardens which surround the house, including herbs and vegetables growing right outside your door; feel free to pluck some parsley or pick a tomato or two for your dinner! There's also a relaxing place to sit outside for dining al fresco or enjoying a beverage, and we provide a Weber charcoal grill so you can grill a steak or throw some shrimps on the barbie.
We're in Vermont, of course, so winters at the Culbertson House Studio are terrific. We're right in the middle between the uber-resorts if Mt. Snow and Stratton, about a 40-minute drive to both. Additionally, we have the best ski deal in New England right here at the Brattleboro Ski Area at Memorial Park. Ski from 7-10pm, under the lights, for $5. It's one T-bar and one little slope, but highly recommended. It's where one of your owners basically learned how to ski as a kid.
The bustling, artsy town of Brattleboro is only 1.5 miles down the road. Just steps away, literally a five-minute walk, is the renowned Brattleboro Farmers' Market, operating on Saturdays from May to October, with fresh local produce, wonderful food trucks and a rich selection of local arts and crafts. Five more minutes of walking will bring you to Living Memorial Park, with a summer swimming pool, skateboard park, a Frisbee golf course and other features, and nightly softball games under the lights.
Nearby are incredible hiking trails (there are some great trails right behind the house), swimming holes, canoe rentals, a terrific 18-hole golf course, and
Brattleboro's bustling downtown, where you'll find unique shopping and fine dining (we've got lots of recommendations, from the tender ribs at the Top of the HIll grill to the exquisite gourmet fare of Peter Havens.)
Just to add, the trails on the big hill behind the house are extensive and beautiful, and cross-country skiers can follow them through the woods in winter, too.
We renovated the Studio with vacation rentals in mind; unlike many vacation rentals it is dedicated solely to our guests and you're free to make the space your own. There's private parking and a welcoming, homey feel to the space that we're sure you'll enjoy.
We do provide all the modern conveniences, including a dishwasher and large microwave, high-speed wifi internet, and a new Roku TV equipped with a Roku stick with open accounts for Netflix and Amazon Video
We look forward to meeting you and hope you enjoy your stay here at the Culbertson House!

I would highly recommend this space to those with dogs. Nice wooded area perfect for a quick hike/wonderful sniffing area for dogs. The owners of the property are very accommodating, kind, and knowledgeable of the area. David made sure I had everything I needed (toiletries, instructions for WiFi, fireplace, etc) and was so accommodating even with my last minute booking. Very easy to get ahold of and communicate with. Will definitely be coming back! :)

Nice place. Very friendly owners but older place and lots of things broke while we were there 2 months. Some things replaced some not. Cooking and eating supplies minimal.

Title says it - great location near town, very cozy, responsive and friendly hosts. Would recommend!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here a month for work. Everyday we woke and felt so lucky to be staying in such a beautifully decorated space with every amenity needed to be comfortable for a long term stay. Loved watching the snow from the big front windows and sitting by the fire at night. Our host also lives on the property and was able to help and answer questions as needed and is very friendly and has great suggestions about the area. Can easily walk to Vermont Country deli in the morning for coffee and donuts or giant cookies. The space feels like an extension of the hosts home rather than a place thrown together to rent out by the night. Great experience staying here and cannot recommend enough!

The recliners were very comfortable. Everything was close at hand in the kitchen. We were only there 2 nights, but it had everything we needed for that visit

The studio was spacious and comfortable with appealing artwork and furniture. Though we did not use it, I loved that there is a working fireplace. The hosts were very welcoming to my little dog, which is particularly important to me. The booking process was smooth and communication easy. Of course the location speaks for itself....very near downtown Brattleboro as well as the beautiful countryside of Vermont and NH.

Beautiful quiet location. Very short walk to Memorial Park and the farmers market. Spacious and well stocked with all the basics. My dog and I were very happy here...he misses it already!

This room is great for a quick weekend stay. I went with my husband and 2 year old daughter, the space of this studio is very large. All the things in previous reviews that people have complained about have been addressed - there is plenty of lighting, bed (is sooo comfy and huge), the TV works, parking is sufficient... the furniture is outdated but who cares? You're not there to sit on the couch all day and it's not your house. Julia was more than accommodating and someone is always around to address any concerns. The location is beyond amazing, you can walk to the Vermont Country Deli and the farmer's market, and it's only a 5 min drive to downtown Brattleboro. It was a great stay and reasonably priced.

My wife and I spent a long weekend at the Culbertson House with our greyhound to visit family in the area. The studio is a great location, only a little over a mile into town. It is a large apartment with a comfortable king bed, a large fireplace (with plent of firewood available), and plenty of seating for guests. Julia could not have been nicer, we drove up during a nor’easter, and Julia let us in early. We had a great stay, and will definitely look to stay there again on our next visit.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for. This was the cheapest place in the Brattleboro area at the time. Several small things need attention now are they will turn into big things later. I fixed a couple of things myself and pointed out problems to the owner. I'm not going to throw anybody under the bus as the place was not horrible. However, I strongly suggest an update of furnishings to bring the place in to the here and now. It reminded me of my Grandma's home in the 70's. The location is great and close to downtown. Caution going up to the house as the road up the hill has some bad potholes.

The most attractive feature of this place is the price and it is not low enough for what you get. There are no screens on the windows so you can't ventilate the place without inviting the bugs in, the tv doesn't work, internet service is maddenly intermittent, the kitchen furnishings are sparse (no hot pads, no cereal bowls, no dish washing sponge/brush, etc) and equivalent in quality to Goodwill rejects, no soap in bathroom, poor lighting, etc. Surprised it met minimum requirements for vrbo listing.

We stayed two nights in this studio. The pros: the bed was comfortable and we enjoyed the fire place. Also we could have our dog with us. Cons: the studio was very dark and furnishings shabby.

We were fortunate to find Julia and David's kitty-friendly apartment in Brattleboro for our first month in Vermont. They were welcoming and friendly but also gave us plenty of privacy. The apartment was comfy and cozy and had every convenience we needed. Thanks, Julia and David!

Julia is great - available if you need her but otherwise very low profile. My one very minor complaint is that the kitchen - large with frig, stove, microwave etc - had only a couple of huge unattractive mugs and bowls. Has there been a problem with theft? Since breakfast is the meal most likely eaten in a b and b, why not provide 4 nice coffee mugs and cereal bowls. Also there wasn't any black tea, usually a given. Otherwise a good deal and would definitely stay there again.
