Bear's Place Guest House was our home for 5 days and it was the perfect place to start our island stay. We spent much time on our studio's private lanai, which is surrounded by lush green plant life, and was often visited by geckos and butterflies. The coqui frogs are abundant and their nighttime songs were a perfect lullaby each night.
Everything was clean and simple. The onsite laundry was a great bonus, and the location was great for us. The other guests who stayed during the same period of time were quiet and really friendly.
The road leading to the location can be a little tricky when oncoming traffic is also on the road, but we considered it part of our adventure.

Location was wonderful for our planned itinerary.
There were extras that we always use that I have never seen elsewhere: smaller cooler for food when traveling, napkins provided when eating in.
The fans didn't work but the weather was still perfect for having the screens open for comfort.

Nestled in tropical forest with nighttime bids & maybe frogs singing. Kind of magical! Very calming environment! Nice bed, couch & small table with 2 chairs, fridge, microwave, dishes beach towels & beach chairs.
Needed a deep clean. I’m a light sleeper & worried the noisy nighttime birds would keep me awake. But I slept well.

Clean and comfortable. Good parking spaces available next to the house.

Loved the high ceilings, large balcony and all the nature scenes and sounds around the property!
There were two futons in our unit that were super springy so we’d stay here again as a couple but probably would not bring additional guests as those sofa beds/futons would not be comfortable to sleep on for more than a night.

very clean and private, the owners were super nice and treated us like family.
I was under the impression there was going to be atleast 1 bedroom with an actual door but there are no doors other then to the bathroom and a huge walk in closet.

The Studio was spacious with a very large lanai surrounded by a lust tropical forest. One was serenaded to sleep each night by a chorus of frogs. The bed was very comfy, the bathroom had a lovely tub to soak in. Although there was no actual kitchen there was a hotplate with pots & utensils and plenty of appliances ie. coffeemaker, kettle, electric grill and rice cooker.
Nothing.

I absolutely loved the location in a residential area rather than a touristy one. It was cozy and quiet, other than the famous coqui frogs lol, and yet at short driving distance from pretty much anything I needed. I liked the contactless check in key was left for me ahead of time, and then I dropped off the key at the same place, did not see any staff, but I really liked this. I am certainty coming back here next time I will be on the Big Island.

It’s a great bargain, quiet and nestles in a nice neighborhood backed up to some trees. The stay was great and balcony was amazing.
No AC so windows are open and birds are chirping so bring ear plugs.

It was beautiful....The balcony and the birds and peace..& quiet most of the time...I only met Nanette once. She seemed great. I think the fact that the Big Island has no lites at night is a drawback for me as an older driver. Did get lost once basically couldn't see...on the road that runs right above guesthouse I adjusted after that & made it a point to get back before sunset.I would return with someone who could drive in the dark...better
So I think I summed it up fairly well above Also you really can't walk to a restaurant or a store from there

The facilities are great and the owners are friendly. You definitely need a car to enjoy the Big island, but the location is Kona offers lots of advantages. There is a supermarket close-by, there are beautiful beaches at 15-20 minutes driving distance and the Kona harbor is 10-15 minutes away. We’ve chosen the studio which offers plenty of room and has a nice terrace, you will definitely enjoy your morning coffee or dinner there.

The view of the balcony was great. Refreshments were appreciated and silverware as well.
The bed was a bit worn out.

The host family could not be any nicer.
The porch is a fantastic place to have meals as it has a partial ocean view through a lush courtyard.
The pictures and description are very misleading.
We stayed in the second option,
“Quadruple room with sea view”. The first photo has a red bed cover.
The description states:
-This is a quadruple room. I can’t figure this one out. There’s a small kitchen, a bathroom, and a small living room where the beds are also located. Unless you count the uncovered porch maybe?
-Also states the room has “2 sofa beds and a queen bed”. They put a mattress on a bed frame in front of the couch which is not in the picture and blocks the couch. So you have two beds in that small living room, no couch access and where the third bed is? Maybe in the fourth room:)
-The review with the rooster…..yep. That joker has a set of pipes.
-Washer and dryer are on property. Down stairs in a separate room for $5 a load.
-Ocean view is mostly blocked by garden overgrowth but the ocean is actually miles away so the partial view through the broad leaf trees was kinda nice really.

Beautiful grounds, like staying in a tropical jungle, especially sitting on the lanae. I love the sounds of nature, therefore kept windows open all night. There is a ceiling fan which was very comfortable for us with 68-70 at night. Great location for access to north, west & south Kona.

I was happy with the security. Good lighting on doors and path to the room. Good supply of items for kitchen use.
No A/C. The refrigerator smelled, needed to be cleaned better. The shower 🚿 head won’t move, and I am short so that made it hard to rinse the shower out. The room needed a good cleaning.

not a lot of cons! great stay!

Beautiful forest surrounding facility. Lots of birds chattering. Laundry facility. Towels/chairs for beach. Fridge and plates/silverware.
Sorely missed having microwave. Left turn off of major highway to small street challenging at night.

The kitchen was wonderful and a friendly gathering place for our family renting both the Orchid and Plumeria rooms. We liked watching the sunset while eating dinner on the Lani. We had the entire top floor. The high ceilings and open windows in addition to being at the 1,200 feet elevation made every day refreshing. And we could see from our lanai whales breaching and hear the inland birds. Being a painter, I am inspired by the Nanette's garden with amazing plants. I enjoy picking bananas, papaya, and taro leaves for cooking. Bein a regular every year, I enjoy the lovely, friendly, three generational family living a short distance from the Bears' Place. I like visiting a place that is like a time capsule of the past near a mixture of native Hawaiians. The location is ideal for exploring many Island attractions. The family is very good at advising where to go for various services. The family upgrades some part of the property, this year I enjoyed some extra electrical plug ins by the bed with touch operated led night lights.
Small items could be upgraded. A wide sharp blade vegetable peeler, a sharper grater, more than two teaspoons, and table ware that feels balanced in the hand. Most importantly we missed forks that are functional. The existing tableware is beautiful but not functional. The scrubbing pads are great but plastic Chore Girl scrubber would be very useful in cleaning stuck food on oven ware and pots and pans. Next to the stove one of the two electrical plug-ins is so tight that I could not plug in a mixer.

The checkin was very well organized. Nanette left us a lovely message with the info where to find the key. Bears Place is a very well located and clean guest house. Our room was very large with a spacious terrace. There is a small kitchenette in the room with everything you need for a simple menu. All utensils were very clean and in good condition. There is even a laundry room where you can wash and dry your clothes for 5.- USD per wash. Everything has been thought of. We felt very comfortable and can highly recommend it. Free parking is also available
Das Bett war nicht so komfortabel.

Excellent place that we found to be very relaxing. We weren't there much at all during the day as we were out on an adventure, but we did enjoy that the room had a cooler and beach chairs that we used daily. This place is an awesome value.
The power strip on the coffee maker kept flipping off and had to be reset often.

THE LOCATION WAS CLOSE TO PLACES WE WANTED TO GO WHILE HERE ON THE ISLAND.
I WOULD NOT EVER STAY HERE AGAIN. THE SMELL OF MOLD MADE ME SICK TO MY STOMACH. THE ROOM WAS DATED AND NEED LOTS OF UPDATING. SPIDER WEBS AND DUST EVERYWHERE. I BROUGHT MY OWN CLEANING
SUPPLIES TO CLEAN THROUGHOUT THE ROOM.
ALSO THE WALLS ARE VERY THIN YOU CAN HERE PEOPLE WALKING OVER YOUR HEAD ALL TIMES OF THE NIGHT AND TALKING. WE TRIED TO REACH THE OWNER AND WAS IGNORED. THE WI FI ALSO KEPT GOING OUT. SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
