About this house rental
Come experience the magic of Alone Mill! Canoe, bike, hike or just hang out by the creek!
We are a 15 minute (6 mile) drive from Lexington, Virginia, home to Washington & Lee University, Virginia Military Institute and the Virginia Horse Center. Rockbridge County Virginia is home to the Maury River, the only river in Virginia that begins & ends in the same county. Spring, summer and fall are great times for running the whitewater in Goshen Pass or tubing the flat water into Lexington. Come to the country where you can stay up late, dazzled by the stars and the Milky Way.
In the late fall & winter, enjoy our cozy cabin and a game of pool. After dark in June and July, the lightning-bug display is amazing every night! Later in the summer and fall, the tree frogs and cicadas fill the air with their songs. The cabin is right on a popular (and challenging) biking route.
The School House is located within 300 yards of a river access point locally known as Alone Mill. Upstream is my personal favorite stretch of canoeing on the Maury, it's a peaceful 5 hour ride in slow water and can be as fast as 2 hours when the river is up! You can put in at Goshen or Rockbridge Baths and walk home from the take-out.
If you're more interested in a bubbling stream, Alone Mill Creek passes within 50 feet of the front door!
Rockbridge County also has thousands of acres of National Forest and State-managed land for hunting and hiking in the mountains. The cabin is within about 6 miles of access at Goshen Pass and other spots are equally close.
Other activities at the School House include a pool table, ping pong, basketball goal and badmitton set. The yard is large and flat, perfect for a football game, and the driveway is flat also, good for the little kids to practice bike riding.
A 1 mile walk will take you to weekend wine tasting at Lexington Valley Vineyard, one of several vineyards in the county.

Our family absolutely enjoyed staying at this beautiful property! We were in town visiting family and could not have picked a better place to stay! We will definitely be returning in the future! Charles and Sarah were amazing hosts and answered any questions we had and provided us access to the the River from their adjacent property!!

Our stay was great. We are a family of 6 and the house had plenty of room for us. My kids loved the yard and the creek and the pool table. This was the best equipped rental we've ever stayed in. It had everything we needed as a big family from dishes to towels there were lots of extras. It was awesome for my toddler. There was a booster seat for the table, plug covers on outlets, and a pack n play. There were books, puzzles and games for every age. It was super quiet and the porch was great for coffee in the morning. We never made it to the big river, the creek in the yard was great. We recommend Rockbridge county pizza and pasta for dinner. Its by the superwalmart. And the Virginia Transportation Museum in Roanoke was worth the hour ride. We would for sure stay again.

An amazing stay at the most adorable cabin in the woods. Sounds of a bubbling creek, cows and horses made this a peaceful retreat to get back to nature and reconnect with ourselves. We could not have asked for a more perfect mini vacation. Beautiful scenery and comfortable amenities too!

We love the location of this property! It is older, and would be amazing if there could be one bed that was a bit larger (my husband is 6’4’’ and had a hard time, lol)
But I love the fresh air and beauty of surroundings.
Could use an updated keurig or at least some coffee for the coffee maker. It’s a haul to the store:) but overall, just fine for us!

So wonderfully beautiful and peaceful. Short 15 min drive from Lexington. The stream could be used as a meditation tape! Coming back every time I visit Lexington

Very remote location, house was left completely unlocked when we arrived which didn’t give us a feeling of safety. No blinds on the windows. Dated and several areas in need of repair or updating (couch covered over with a blanket, window treatments coming out of the walls). No AC in the bedrooms.

Stayed for a weekend while visiting friends in Lexington. The host, Charles, was incredibly nice and helpful, and the Schoolhouse is cute with an interesting history. Convenient to Lexington and 1 mile away from Lexington Valley Winery. Schoolhouse was clean, spacious, private, with huge yard and river running next to it.

Cool old school house that was transformed into a country cabin. Clean, well stocked, and in a very remote setting.
Would highly recommend

Very clean home. Spacious rooms and entertainment area. Great communication from owner. Very accommodating. The only gig was a musty smell when you enter, nothing overwhelming. The location is remote. You are within 15-20 minutes of Lexington but it is not an easy ride. If you know this up front, it is no issue, just an fyi.

There was so much unique character and history in this old schoolhouse. The setting was in the country with a little creek in the front yard. Although it was in a serene, quiet country setting Lexington was only 15 minutes away. Loved our stay!

Great for an off the beaten path vacation. Our little boys enjoyed outdoor space and the teenagers enjoyed the pool table.

We had a wonderful family vacation at the schoolhouse. There was plenty for all of us to do outside - the creek, the river, the basketball hoop, the fire pit, the grill and the two porches. Inside there was a pool/pingpong table, tv’s and great internet. The kitchen had everything we needed and the two bathrooms had plenty of towels and necessities. The laundry even had detergent. The back roads and country environment are gorgeous! Lexington was a great little town. Grocery shopping was very convenient. The owners were wonderful hosts. We would all love to return.

This vacation was an absolute delight for our family . Not only was the location perfect the house was just such a great fit for us and our golden retriever .We had a blast watching lightening bugs on the porch at night and enjoying our coffee out there in the morning. We all had fun playing ping pong and pool . Our son made a little nook watching tv while I read on the chaise lounge .
Each room was spacious and had plenty of fans . The kitchen was roomy and we were able to enjoy most meals at the house and conveniently clean up . We played games and ate meals at the spacious kitchen table .
The owners communicated promptly and were very helpful .
We spent hours on the river with our son and dog . The kids kayak was the perfect touch . We had a blast navigating and exploring the Maury . Having a washer and dryer was very helpful with bathing suits . The huge porches were great to leave water shoes and nets .
We brought large blankets for our dog and used a baby gate to keep him out of the carpeted part of the house once he went swimming . There was plenty of room for our dog and son to explore around the property and on the way to the river . We felt very safe with both our dog and son . This house allows pets but I never felt like another dog had been there , it was very clean .
This house was full of history , amenities and fun . We will be sure to go back again and explore the river with the kayak and tubes .

We had a fantastic stay at Alone Mill Schoolhouse! The house is converted from an old schoolhouse, but it was very clean and comfortable. Our boys loved playing in the little creek on the property. We weren't able to enjoy the river due to heavy rains making the river deeper than usual with a strong current, but it was easily accessible through the owners property across the street from the school house. There is a big yard, and it is on a quiet street. The owners are very responsive to messages, and were very helpful. It is about a 30 minute drive from the attractions in Natural Bridge. Our boys are already asking when we can come back!

Very nice, clean, welcoming. Terrific yard space for pup and games. A bit disappointed with grill (a balancing act with broken leg). Leg on dining table needs to be secured. A nice cabin, loved for sure, but needed a little attention.

We stayed with our three kids for three nights. The place was great and our kids loved playing in the stream on the property during the day and playing pool at night. Our only issue was the grass. The house sits on a large field and it had not been cut in quite a while so we had to go through 6-8 inch high grass to use the fire pit, get to the stream, or go to the actual river. This invariably led to a lot of ticks. We are an outdoors loving family so we are pretty practiced at tick checks but it did make the stay slightly less enjoyable as anytime the kids went outside, we had to do a full body tick check when they came back in. Otherwise the stay was great and we really enjoyed going into Lexington and down to the Natural Bridge and the VA Safari Park. We also appreciated the owners letting us check out an hour late so we weren't as rushed getting out in the morning. We would definitely go back if we ever needed to stay near Lexington again.

We had a pleasant time and the host was welcoming. The environment was clean but smelled a little musty and the windows were not cleaned so had lots of bugs and dust. Besides that we enjoyed our stay and would come again.

We had a great time staying at this property. Being from florida, the winding mountain roads were a little intimidating, but by the end of our trip I was driving them with confidence. We enjoyed the house! The kitchen was well stocked with dishes and basic necessities. The bathroom with a tub did not hold water, but we were able to find a rubber stopper cover in the drawer of that same bathroom which helped the next time we tried to give the baby a bath. The property was clean and the outdoors were great!

Great house, great property, great area.
The house and area were terrific for us. You are in the outskirts of town among the mountains and streams. It’s quiet and peaceful. It’s about 15 minutes from downtown.
We brought our dog- there was enough land for him to run free and we didn’t have to worry about cars on the road. He got to swim in the creek as well.

We loved the our stay at the cabin. It was peaceful and relaxing. The pups enjoyed the large yard to play in. If we are ever back in the area we will definitely see if the cabin is available.

Check in and out was very easy. The property was clean and stocked with everything we needed (towels, TP, etc.). We enjoyed playing in the stream next to the house and my husband loved fly fishing in the bigger river across the street. Lots of games and toys at the house to play with too. We took advantage of the basketball hoop and ball as well as balls with gloves there for guests. Thank you for a wonderful stay!!
FYI Ruby Tuesday does deliver food to this address.

As fun as camping but as comfortable as a house . Activities for all ages.

I came with two of my friends to fly fish and watch my daughters concert at W&L. The description of this charming schoolhouse said rustic so I knew going in that it was not going to be a typical hotel stay, but it exceeded my expectations. It was very clean, there were extra pillows, the beds were comfortable. It’s nestled in nature. With farms and old houses all around. The creek and walking paths just outside the house we’re an extra bonus for us. It reminded us of going to the school house on “Little house on the Prairie”

We had a wonderful time at this historic little cabin. The weather was a little grey, but we couldn't have had a better place to cosy up on the porch and listen to the rain. And my dog loved walking around the beautiful creek bed and forest that surround.
