About this house rental
The House of Joy is your own private mountain retreat in the heart of the Appalachians. Front wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vehicles are best for navigating our mountain roads due to the steepness in some spots (read the last paragraph for more information).
There are spectacular views from the front of the spacious wrap-around deck, and soothing breezes and sitting areas on all three sides of the deck. . This lodge is set on 40 private acres, with your own personal hiking trails that extend to the top of the mountain. The House of Joy has a huge great room with gas fireplace and giant flat screen TV (for watching movies on a streaming service or the DVD player; no cable and no satellite), and full kitchen adjacent to it. This great room is perfect for group gatherings, with table space for 28, and additional seating on the deck. Two half baths are also on this floor.
Downstairs are four family-sized bedrooms. Each of the four bedrooms has a queen sized bed and a loft area with 3 twin mattresses for kids and teens (and youthful adults!). The lofts are accessed by "ladder-steps", and may not be safe for toddlers or the elderly. Also, the lofts have very low ceilings (adults will need to stoop down in them). Each bedroom has access to the downstairs stone porch. Two full baths (with showers) are also downstairs, at each end of the hall. Bring your own towels, or you can use ours if you will wash them before your departure.
Additional beds include a double sofa bed, and full size futon and one cot. There is bed space for up to 20 people in the downstairs rooms (5 people per room), and one more person can sleep on the upstairs futon. The sofa bed is extra bed-space in case you need it.
The recreation room is on the top floor, and houses various games, as well as its own beautiful view. The extra room with futon is also on this top floor.
A large firepit area with stone and wood-bench seating is next to the House of Joy.
Outdoor games: Tetherball, ring toss & bean-bag toss. A giant hillside slide is next to the firepit, with burlap bags to slide on.
Also included for your enjoyment: DVD's and video tapes, books and games.
Wi-Fi is provided, but it is not high speed because that is not available at out mountain location. Loading may be quite slow, and using multiple devices at once may cause excessive lag time.
The large-screened TV (on main floor) uses a roku for internet streaming services or DVD's.
The laundry room houses a washer and dryer. Please note that guests are welcome to use our towels, but must wash and dry them before their departure. Or guests can bring their own towels. This helps us keep our cleaning fee lower.
The kitchen has a standard fridge and stove/oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee makers (regular size and single cup style), toaster, two double-sinks, and plenty of dinnerware and cookware.
No smoking is permitted inside the building.
There is a window AC unit in the great room for the hotter summer months. The high elevations generally provide cooler weather than down in the valley, and there is a ceiling fan in each room. The downstairs stays cooler on it's own since part of it is covered by the hillside.
The House of Joy is close to popular Maggie Valley and historic Waynesville, as well as the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Blue Ridge parkway. It takes about 45 minutes to drive to Asheville. Area activities include white water rafting, horseback riding, body flying (over a wind tunnel), fishing, hiking, shopping, gem mining, golfing, hot air ballooning and mountain biking. For more information and links to area attractions, go to (website: hidden).
The House of Joy is a special, peace-filled place. We hope you will come and experience it for yourself.
Driving tips: The last half mile leading up to the House of Joy is gravel and moderately steep. Most front-wheel drive vehicles don't have any problem if the driver doesn't drive too slow up the steeper sections, but some rear-wheel drive vehicles find they sometimes lose traction on the gravel. All-wheel-drive and 4-wheel-drive vehicles are ideal. As you are going uphill on the steeper parts of the gravel roads, it helps to keep a steady speed and not stop. If you do find you are losing traction, just stop and back up to a flatter part of the road, and try again. When you are heading back down the steeper parts of the mountain roads, make sure to keep the transmission in a lower gear in order to save wear-and-tear on your breaks.

Great communication with our property mgr. She answered all my questions prior to our stay which helped us be more prepared when we arrived. Attention to detail was so beneficial especially about getting up to the house on the mountain.
Perfect set-up for families with children. Lots of space inside and things to do outside.
Things inside the house were labelled VERY well and that was extremely helpful.

Great Mountain Experience
Renting The House of Joy was very easy. The online process was detailed and I did not have a problem in getting more information from Holly if I had any. This was a great experience for us. As a family going to the mountains was more than we ever expected it to be. Our family was able to go hiking and experience outdoor activities around the property. Other places that we went to were either 30-60 minutes away which was not bad at all. The kids enjoyed the fire pit and the slide along with the games outdoors. The House when we arrived was more than we expected it to be. It had such a beautiful view of the mountains and the scenery was gorgeous. I would really recommend this property and I will definitely be going back.

This property exceeded all our expectations
The cabin and grounds were all very clean and well maintained. The property was great for the six grandchildren that were with us. They enjoyed the slide and tether ball. It was great to have some hiking trails on the grounds. The view was spectacular from the cabin. The drive up the mountain was daunting at first for us Michigan flatlanders but we got used to it in a short time. The two families that were with us are wondering when we are going back. We will be back.

Fabulous place!
My family and I met at the House of Joy to celebrate Christmas. It was a great mid way point for us from Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia. The cabin has tons of space, every possible thing that you could need for your stay, and fun lofts in each of the rooms with three twin beds in each. A group went one day to a nearby place to snow tube, and they had a great time. We also went to downtown Waynesville for an afternoon and shopped in the Mast General Store and the local little shops. We were a little worried about the driveway the day we were going because it had rained and had frozen and thawed. All of us were able to get up the driveway with no problem, several without 4 wheel drive. Holly, the property manager, was excellent to deal with and was very helpful the whole time. We are already discussing our next trip!

Snowed in and Happy!
Our family of 20 stayed at the House of Joy and we ended up getting a sweet surprise. SNOW!! For a few of our crowd it was their first snow. The house was beautiful and clean upon our arrival. Headed to get groceries and everything was close to us Plenty to keep 12 kids busy, thanks to the upstairs game room. I could go on and on but Holly is a jewel to rent from and she is on top of things. She made our stay comfortable and checked to see if we needed anything during the snow. I felt like I have known her forever. She also had put a tree up for us to enjoy. Thank you Holly!!! Will recommend you to all. Lynn

Stay Above the Clouds
We had a wonderful time at The House of Joy. We were overjoyed with the accommodations, the view, and all the comforts of home! They have everything you might need to feed your family or large group, from 2 regular coffee makers to a large percolater, crock pot, chafing dish, large pots, mixing bowls, serving bowls, utensils...... We pack most of those things for family trips but it is not necessary they have everything you might need including plenty of linens. The space is spacious and well appointed. The view from the porch is breath taking. The trails provided a nice diversion and allowed us to explore the mountain. The kids loved the rock slide and fire pit. Thanks so much for helping us celebrate my mother's birthday!

More than adequate facility with stunning views!
Our three families – six adults and seven children aged 9, 5, 4, 3, 3, 16 mos and 6 mos - found this home to be thoroughly enjoyable with no disappointments! The wooded setting and stunning views provided a soothing vacation. The tetherball, fire pit, Alpine slide outside and the play room inside gave the children plenty of chances to run off their energy! To top it all off, it was very clean! The accommodations were more than adequate!

A Great Place
My family and I (11 adults, 3 children and 2 babies) spent Christmas at the House of Joy. Common areas are wide enough to enjoy time together without stepping on each other and the four large bedrooms downstairs (+1 one upstairs) offer some privacy to rest. The house was very clean when we arrived and it was exactly what we expected: it is very practical with labelled drawers, a detailed house guide, sufficient cooking ware, etc. Holly (Property Manager) was very helpful and even set up the Christmas tree and brought in fire wood for us. The house is located in the mountain, it is very calm and we had an amazing view over the valley. As indicated in the property description there is a path of gravel to reach the house - it may seem impressive at first but we had a Honda Odyssey minivan and had no issue going up to the house with seven people + luggage in the car (make sure you put your gear on low ("L")). Our other cars were a VW Passat and a Ford Expedition and they went up as well without issues. Everyone in our party had an amazing time and if we were to do it again, we would not hesitate to rent this place again.

Amazing Mountain weekend with friends!
We had the most amazing weekend at House of Joy! To begin with Holly was very responsive to every question and inquiry we had making it easy to plan our stay. We were a group of 4 families - 19 people total. The House of Joy is set up uniquely to accommodate our kind of group. The 4 family style rooms with the queen on the main floor and other bedding in the loft area for the kids was terrific! We had 4 couples and 11 kids ranging from 7 to 17 and the bedding was perfect for the group we had. The property is absolutely beautiful. We made use of the hiking trails, the beautiful fire pit area, the tree swing, the wonderful rocking chair front porch, and the tetherball. We also drove over to Lake Junaluska one day and spent time kayaking and paddle boarding. We had more than enough seating and dishes to have family style meals. I can't say enough good things about this property and how wonderful it was for our getaway. We will definitely be back!!
