About this house rental
A Beautiful and Serene Retreat On the Banks of the Ten Mile River-- and Only a Stone's Throw from Miles of Beach and Dunes. Open floor plan, fully outfitted kitchen, 2 Bedroom, 1.5 Bath, Sleeps 6. Queen bed in the master bedroom, Queen bed in the second bedroom and a queen size sofabed in the living room. There are two extra queen size futons stored above the closet in each bedroom. Fireplace, laundry room. There is a large deck surrounding the entire house with a 4-person hot tub, chaise lounges, chairs and dining table all overlooking the river and the beach. There is also Traeger Smoker/Grill and a Weber propane BBQ on the deck for outdoor cooking. Starlink WiFi throughout the house.
The house is on the river about 500 yards from the Pacific ocean. You can kayak from the front yard either up-river or toward the ocean. Up-river is absolutely breathtaking. The estuary is a Marine Sanctuary and it is totally protected. It stretches east for several miles and has many side channels and inlets to explore. As you head deeper east into the estuary it transitions from brackish to fresh water. It can often be sunny along the river when it's foggy on the beach, and you can easily find great places to swim and picnic.
If you venture toward the ocean you'll find two exquisite beaches to the north and south. The beach to the north, Seaside Beach, is strikingly beautiful with huge rocks and caves. It's also one of the few State Park beaches that allows dogs! There is a large and deep cave at the extreme north end of the beach that is accessible when the tide is right. The cave goes completely through the bluff and leads to a secret cove with its own beach. Ten Mile Beach is to the south. It is a huge complex of dunes and is part of MacKerricher State Park. It's great habitat for the endangered Snowy Plover. The beach stretches south for at least six miles. It's incredible for both jogging or hiking. It's covered with sand dollars, shells, and all kinds of other marine life. Also, there are very few people on the beach. You will almost always have the entire beach to yourself. It's very romantic. The hiking is amazing, and the birdwatching is world class. Bring a good pair of binoculars!
Directly in front of the house is the river. Every year families of harbor seals haul out of the river every day and sun themselves on the riverbank. Typically, the seals are swimming around in the river in front of the house. Momma seals and their pups frolic together all the time. I've watched momma seals nursing their pups many times just sitting on my deck. There are also otters, and more birds than I can name: Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Egrets, Osprey, Mallards, Canada Geese, Snow Geese, Mergansers, Grebe, Belted Kingfisher, Cormorants, Pelicans, Caspian Terns, and even a pair of Bald Eagles! The list goes on and on.
If you've got a canoe, kayaks or bicycles bring them. However, I have a three-person canoe and a small kayak and two paddle boards that guests are welcome to use.
If you like the outdoors, there are many things to do without ever leaving the property. If you start to crave civilization, the Town of Fort Bragg is only 15 minutes away. There, you'll find plenty of good restaurants, galleries, a movie theatre, Glass Beach, the Skunk Train, Noyo Harbor, North Coast Brewery, and many other attractions unique to the area. Another 15 minutes to the south along Highway One is the Village of Mendocino. This charming hamlet is filled with fine restaurants, shops, and the natural beauty of the beaches, bluffs, and Big River. Both towns are worth exploring.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please bear in mind that booking requests which include only one weekend day will likely be declined by the owner. This is especially true during Holidays, Spring Break, or any period of high demand. Such reservation requests reduce the number of full weekends the house can be available to other interested renters and are disfavored for that reason.

My friend and I came to stay here for a informal writing retreat. It was the perfect location. We loved the gorgeous view, the ease with which we could take breaks and paddle around the inlet and walk or run on the beach. It was so nice to be able to sit in the hot tub at night. Working on the porch and living room was great. It was clean, well setup, easy to make meals and enjoy our time there. I hope to come back. A real treasure.

From the moment the sunrise shined through the skylights in the bedrooms until we watched the moon rise over the ocean we were in awe of all that nature provided in this beautiful setting. The beach across the river is public and it was a scorching hot holiday weekend so there were more people than usual walking out to the ocean and back but they were far enough away that it didn't bother us at all. You can paddle over to that beach or drive south 2 minutes across the bridge to the parking lot. The dog beach is 2 minutes to the north but our dog loved just swimming in the river in front of the house. There is some traffic noise from the bridge when outside on the deck, but equally is the sound of the roaring waves and crashing surf from the just-out-of-sight ocean. While you're here you can do everything or you can do nothing. Either way you will leave having reconnected to nature, yourself and your loved ones.

We have stayed here many times and we are never disappointed. The location could not be better and the house is a clean, well-maintained, peaceful oasis. The wildlife outside the front door is ever changing. This visit we saw several bald eagles, seals with pups, otter and geese. The house itself is well equipped with everything we need and has a nice hot tub on the front deck that comes in handy after a long hike or day of mountain biking. Many water vessels are supplied and we enjoyed getting out on the water with the SUPs, canoe and kayak and paddling across the estuary to the sand dunes and quiet beach. We stayed a week but still felt like it was too short.

This was our third time staying at Clay's place. As always, we had such a great stay and got to really relax in the most peaceful setting. We love this home and it is the only place we stay now when we are in the area. It's so cozy, clean, and comfortable. Can't wait for our next visit.

This was our third stay at the cottage. Perfect week. From the cottage we watched a family of seven river otters eating fresh caught crab, brown pelicans and one badger. It was exactly what we expected! Cannot wait to book our next trip. Thank you Clay!

Our stay at this property was easy going and relaxing. The property is about a 10 minute drive into town of Fort Bragg which was perfect for us. It was close enough for us to explore the restaurants, Noyo Harbor, Glass Beach, and the trails. The property is situated with everything you might need, BBQ Grill, Smoker, jacuzzi, paddle boards, etc. The host was very nice and the home was clean and sanitized. From the deck we saw otters, bald eagles, seagulls, and the sunrise/sunset. The stay was very relaxing, cant wait to be back.

My husband, my senior dog and I had a great stay at Clayton’s house. The house was very clean, the kitchen well equipped and the view is breathtaking! The location is quiet and private which was perfect for a very relaxing family vacation. I hope to come back!

Had an incredible stay with our 2 dogs. Used the canoe to paddle across the river to the beach. Saw a double rainbow and bald eagles on our first night! Hot tub water was cleaned and new water, which was awesome and made it that much more enjoyable. The owner had a wonderful welcome note on the door and hand written letter with gift when we arrived. Such a nice touch!! It was an incredibly relaxing stay. The river changes direction with the tide, which is so cool to experience and the otters were such cute entertainment from the deck. There are multiple places to sit and relax on the property. Our dogs were so comfortable and happy too! Thanks so much Clay!! We hope to come back.

Location was perfect for our family, right on the river. The kayaks and paddle boards were a treat.

My family and I all really enjoyed our stay here. The house was clean and cozy. It had absolutely everything we needed and then some. I originally thought it would be a bit small for our large group, but it was actually quite spacious. Its proximity to Fort Bragg and Mendocino were also great. But the location right on the calm waters of the nature preserve was the really incredible part! From paddling around and observing the wildlife to traversing the tide to walk through the cave tunnels on the nearby beach— it was a total adventure!! Not to mention sitting in the hot tub and smelling the crisp, clean air. The house provided the perfect spot for all the best activities. It is truly a gem of a property.

This house is right on the edge of 10 Mile River, a beautifyl river that meanders up from the ocean for what seems like miles if you are in akayak. Great birding. The house was perfect for enjoying the river, the ocean, and birds. Clean and comfy.

Thank you Clay for your hospitality. It is apparent that you enjoy and care that your guests feel welcome. The moment I walked through the door I felt all the stress leave my bones. We paddled in the morning, the evening and watched the wildlife for hours. I look forward to our next visit.

Our family has enjoyed this beautiful property for the last 7 years. Sitting outside listening to the ocean and watching wildlife from the deck doesn’t get any better. The house is so accommodating for our family and our two dogs…highly recommend!!!

Our family had a wonderful stay at Clay's retreat! From the moment we arrived to see a welcome note and bottle of wine, to the day we left, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There was a lot to do: canoeing down the river, canoeing across the river to the beach, or relaxing on the deck watching the wildlife or soaking in the spa! Our week stay will not be forgotten. Thank you Clay, and hope to see you soon!

Exceeded all expectations
I booked Clay’s property as a very special treat for myself, my boyfriend, and my elderly dog. It went absolutely beyond all expectations. Location, cleanliness, amenities…extra bonus for access to a kayak and a canoe. Check in was a breeze and it was nice meeting Clay. In addition my dog is very arthritic now and he easily walked up the ramp to the house and lounged on the deck. I’d stay here again in a second!

A Wildlife Watcher's Magical Retreat
We stayed 3 nights over father's day weekend. The house was very clean and the host left us a nice welcome note and a very tasty bottle of wine. We enjoyed the hot tub and watching the abundance of wildlife in the river. We shore fished at the nearby beach and everything about the house was wonderful. The one thing that we were only slightly disappointed in was that the kayaks pictured in the listing are not there anymore. The kayak that is there sinks right to the bottom. But there are so many other activities to do around the area. So no big deal. We definitely recommend Ten Mile House and would love to stay again! We'll just bring our own kayaks next time. Thank you, Clay, for sharing your beautiful home with us.

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the riverfront house with the Ten Mile River right outside the deck as well as the dunes and ocean waves right across the way. We loved watching and hearing the Canadian geese, ospreys, seagulls, ducks, quail, hummingbirds, etc. each day and spotting a seal swimming by occasionally, as well as a bald eagle sitting on the beach a few times. It was fun to beachcomb by the dunes and on the beaches so close by. The house is very private; neighbors close enough to be reassuring but far enough away for solitude. The house and furniture were comfortable and clean, with the exception of the microwave which the cleaning service unfortunately overlooked. The house had many nice upgrades, but the dining room and living room chairs were worn out and need replacement, as did the older small microwave. We appreciated the excellent quality and variety of kitchenware as well as the great lighting and good shower. To improve the ambience for the renter even more, we recommend adding a window covering to the bedroom, new bath and kitchen towels, and a luggage rack . The heat, WiFi and TV worked fine. The laundry center was very appreciated, as we didn't have to pack as much on our trip, but we recommend adding a collapsible laundry basket to the area. Clay was a good communicator and kept in contact whenever needed, from the sweet "Welcome" sign and bottle of wine at check-in, to reaching out to us when a storm knocked the power out. The property was just a short drive from the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse and Mendocino's hiking and shopping opportunities as well as a central location for trips to Hendy Woods, Point Arena, and wineries in Anderson Valley. Overall, we had a fun and relaxing time and recommend the Ten Mile River House in Fort Bragg to all.

A perfect retreat for the spirit and soul...
Our stress melted away the moment we walked into the home. Bald eagles, harbor seals, paddling in the river in every morning and every evening at sunset, the view of the sand dunes. It is a very special place and we felt so grateful to be able spend our 28th anniversary there. We arrived to a welcome sign on the front door, a hand written welcome note and a bottle of wine. Clay, thank you for your thoughtful gestures and stewardship of this incredible property. We look forward to returning in the future.

Wonderful experience all around!
This secluded little piece of heaven is both magical and serene. My husband and I canceled our Mexico trip because our dog is not well, and instead we booked a stay at the last minute. It's exactly what we needed. The home is inviting, cozy, and warm (really clean).
First of all, the kitchen was completely stocked with whatever we could possibly need and filled with so much light. The light in this house is incredible! We got lucky with beautiful weather in January and spent much of our time out on the deck watching the birds and seals, playing games, and BBQing. The evenings were spent in front of the fireplace reading and drinking wine. The beds were very comfortable and we appreciated all the extra pillows and towels provided.
So many outdoor activities to do, but our daily walks up to the bluff every morning and evening were my favorite because it was so peaceful. Our dog Nina is normally very anxious when we take her on trips, but she was really relaxed here. It was really great to be able to bring her and have this time with her.
I can't thank Clay enough for letting us book this stay last minute. It really meant a lot to us and it was the break we needed. We really hope to stay here again in the future.

My wife, two dogs and I were in need of some rest and relaxation and that is just what we got. This home, situated on the mouth of the Ten Mile River provided a unique, quiet setting. Pelicans, Hummingbirds, Ospreys, Geese, Otters and other wildlife provided the entertainment. A brief ride in the canoe took all of us downstream to the dog friendly beach. Clay, the owner communicated well and greeted us with a colorful welcoming sign, note and a much appreciated bottle of wine. We look forward to future stays.

Great stay
My husband, 10-year-old son and I enjoyed a quiet week at Clay’s house. We kayaked on the river, walked on the beach and nearby trails, and enjoyed watching the sunset from the property. It was a great place to get away from it all.

I truly wish we could have gone to your property. Hopefully when this virus is past us we will re-book. We are still looking for the refund to hit our bank account. We did get the Vrbo email saying it was refunded.
