About this cottage rental
A period, end of terrace cottage with wood burner, enclosed garden and private parking just five minutes walk from the centre of Ambleisde.. Ground Floor:
Living room: 24" Freeview TV, DVD Player, CD Player, Woodburner
Kitchen/dining room: Electric Cooker, Microwave, Fridge/Freezer, Dishwasher, Washing Machine
Hallway: Washer Dryer
First Floor:
Bedroom 1: Double (4ft 6in) Bed
Bedroom 2: 2 x Single (3ft) Beds
Bathroom: Bath With Shower Over, Heated Towel Rail, Toilet. Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and W-Fi included. Initial fuel for wood burner included.. Enclosed, lawned garden with patio, garden furniture and BBQ. Private parking for 2 small cars. No smoking. Please note: There are steps down to the property from road level. This 200 year old, slate, end of terrace cottage has been completely renovated by the owners, John and Maggie. It has been in their family since 1987 when it was bought off the Dickinson family who owned most, if not all of the terrace. It is set in a lovely location, away from the main road but in very easy walking distance of the village. It is called Stockdale Cottage because it sits at one end of the Stockdale Thrust, a geological feature which runs all the way to another Stockdale Cottage in Longsleddale. There are several steps up to the property from road level, however down the road there are fewer steps and will bring you to the cottage level. At this end of the thrust you are only five minutes’ walk from Ambleside town centre, where there are great shops, cafes, pubs and the Tourist Information Centre. You are only 10 minutes’ walk from Lake Windermere and if you turn right outside the house, you are straight onto Wansfell or into Blue Hill woods, so called for the bluebells in spring. You could walk north towards Kirkstone and drop back into the village via the falls, or go up the hill or wander over to Jenkins Wood and Troutbeck for a pint at the local pub. Early in the morning you many see deer from the back bedroom.
There is limited space for a cot if you are bringing your own. The double room would have to be moved around in order to accommodate a cot.
There are open, steep, spiral or narrow stairs at the property.

The cottage did the job- we slept pretty well and had what we needed in the kitchen. It is a very small property and lacked somewhere to hang coats and out outdoor stuff (of which we had lots). And there is no view at all which is frustrating when you know what’s around you. The walk into Ambleside is a short 10 stroll.

An ideal property in Ambleside near to all local amenities and bus routes. Lovely walks nearby too, especially to the Waterfall.

Great cottage.
Great cottage. Lovely location, bit of a walk up the hill but having a car parking space made that worth it. Very clean, comfortable and cozy. Had a great three days. Thank you!

This was our 2nd stay in Stockdale Cottage and there were a few changes from last time.
This was our 2nd stay in Stockdale Cottage and there were a few changes from last time. It's still up a steep hill and down some tricky steps but has the benefit of off road parking. The owners have redecorated it and added a Perfect Fit blind to the back door, which is very nice. Everything was nice and clean and we felt very safe staying here. We were lucky to have good weather so appreciated the chairs and table in the garden, and the washing line was useful (although there is a washer/dryer, as well as a dishwasher). The lovely log burning stove only got used once as it was so warm, and there's efficient central heating. This was the first time I had used an induction hob and was impressed by its controllability and speed. However, people with pacemakers and ICDs need to stay well clear! The keysafe was a big improvement on having to trail to Windermere to collect and return the key. Ambleside is an excellent base for exploring the Lakes and the Cottage is only a 10 minute walk from town. For a couple or family with up to 2 children we have no hesitation in recommending it. We did, however, find it a little too cosy with 4 adults.

Overall a nice cottage.
Overall a nice cottage. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to make it attractive and comfortable. They do extra things like provide some towels, hand soap, toilet paper, and basics for washing up and using the dishwasher, which was all appreciated. They provide free WiFi which had an excellent signal. It is in a great location although be prepared for the typical Lake District narrow steep streets to drive to it. They do say parking for 2 small cars and I believe they would need to be very small. We parked one of our cars in a local car park because road parking is impossible. It is worth noting the steps down to the cottage are steep. None of that would prevent me returning. My only criticism is how noisy the boiler is, it did feel like a constant droning in the background and made it difficult to get to sleep at times. However, that is me and it might not bother others, also when we went it was very cold and so the heating came on more.

It was very easy to soon feel at home in Stockdale Cottage.
It was very easy to soon feel at home in Stockdale Cottage. Thoughtfully and comprehensively equipped, renovated to a high standard, warm, clean and comfortable (although I wouldn't say the beds were luxurious). It has a big fridge / freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and lovely wood burning stove). I usually take a trailing extension socket because there never seem to be enough sockets in the right places but not so here. The cottage is up a steep narrow hill, several minutes walk from the middle of Ambleside and has parking for 2 small cars (squeezed on a C-Max and Fiat 126). There are steep steps down to the cottage and the narrow twisted staircase is a bit awkward at the bottom. There are recycling facilities but guests are encouraged to take their recyclable items home. We loved the cottage and hope to return. We are very grateful to the owners for making it available. Be aware the key needs to be collected from, and returned to, Windermere.

We had a really lovely holiday in Stockdale Cottage which was very cosy, clean and well placed for exploring the Lakedistrict. Lots of walks from the door - really enjoyed hikes over to Troutbeck, and Ambleside had lots of good shops and pubs - kids really enjoyed the park there.
Would recommend and return.

This was the second time we have stayed here. The location and car parking space allied to cosy and comfortable accommodation so close to Ambleside town centre are pretty near unbeatable.
Shops, pubs and restaurants are less than 10 minute walk away (15 minutes back, it's uphill but not too much of a challenge!)
Highly recommended.

Lovely few days for the 4 of us.
Lovely few days for the 4 of us. Beware of steep steps outside and in cottage, but no problem for us. Well equipped kitchen; nice touches of fire wood, dishwasher tabs, liquid soap etc. Warms up very quickly and holds heat. Walkable to and from pubs etc but very quiet location. Great walks literally outside the front
door.
