About this chalet rental
This beautiful gem has been lovingly cared for by our family for almost 20 years—and has served as a relaxing retreat all year round. Our goal: to make you feel like it's your home away from home. It's comfortably furnished and tastefully decorated in the French country style—and is the perfect spot to relax or use as a home base for all your Berkshire activities.
It is family-friendly with child gates for the stairs—and plenty of games, toys, books, and movies for your children. No kids? These things are tucked away so you don't need to use them if you don't want!
There are 2 bedrooms upstairs: one master with a king-size bed and one smaller bedroom with a twin bed and pull-out twin bed. There is one downstairs bathroom. An open downstairs floor plan flows from the living room (with a wood-burning stove fired up by plenty of wood we have stored for you), to the kitchen to the dining room.
There's a super comfy pull-out sofa with a queen-size bed in the living room if you need extra space for your family or friends.
Off the dining room is the beautiful screened-in porch where you can sit for hours relaxing and enjoying the breeze and sounds of the Loom Brook from the back of the house. A connected deck allows for easy grilling with the gas grill.
In the summer, our house is just minutes from Lake Garfield, where there's a lake beach perfect for kids and adults alike! A lifeguard is present during the summer months—making it perfect for swimming out to the floating docks (it will bring back camp memories!). You can also canoe and kayak on this lake. We have sand toys, beach umbrellas, and chairs ready for your use. Love to hike? The Appalachian Trail crosses our road, which is perfect for walking any time of the year. We're also situated right near the Beartown State Forest with all its trails. Love to mountain bike? We have one bike available for your use; feel free to bring up your own bikes and ride along our dirt road — or on the nearby trails.
We're also close (about 20 minutes) to blueberry picking and apple picking.
We're 40 minutes from Tanglewood, 45 minutes from Jacob's Pillow, and just 25 minutes from the town of Great Barrington with its restaurants, bars, Triplex cinema, and the historic Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.
Fall brings the beautiful splendor of the fall foliage home here; it surrounds the house and everywhere you turn. Go for walks, take in kayaking or canoeing on Lake Garfield, or just take a visit to the nearby Taft Farms for their pumpkins, fresh cider and hot donuts, and corn mazes.
Our home is just 15 minutes from Butternut Ski Resort, which is where our children have learned to ski from age 3. It's the perfect family resort and our home is close enough to put season's passes (or just one-day passes) to good use. You'll love coming home to the warmth of the wood stove and the comfort of our home. We also have snow shoes available for your use.
We are minutes from the town of Monterey, which is small but quaint. We are also just minutes from the Roadside Cafe, the perfect country diner for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. (There's also Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lee, and Lenox—as well as Pittsfield...which is 45 minutes away...for more delicious restaurants.)
We are about a 25-minute drive from the outlets in Lee, about 30 minutes to Stockbridge (with the quaint and historic Red Lion Inn) and Lenox with Miraval Resort and Wyndhurst Manor & Club (where you can play golf), the Kripalu Yoga Center, and Tanglewood (as well as Canyon Ranch).
Pets are allowed by individual request.
Upgraded Internet (2020), with two satellite dishes, allows for more Internet surfing, Zoom calls, and at-home work. An additional DISH satellite offers more than 100 channels on the TV.
Our goal: to have you fall in love with our home just as much as we love it. We want you to feel this is your Monterey home away from home!

The house was so sweet and cozy. The hosts created a warm and welcoming environment. We would definitely stay here again!

We really enjoyed this little home in the Berkshire mountains. It’s near to many beautiful small towns, quiet in the evenings, and has a fabulous screened in porch to enjoy birdsong and forest views. We appreciated the beach gear and loved swimming at the lake just a few minutes away. The roads to and from the home are unpaved gravel, so visitors should know getting to the house is best for cars with all-wheel drive.

When we arrived late to check-in, feeling extraordinarily drained from deep loss and arduous caregiving, being greeted by a comforting bottle of white wine and chocolate shortbread upon arrival was a wonderful warm first in all the years we have rented from VRBO/Homeaway. Valerie is the most caring, flexible, hospitable host we were blessed to connect with so far. We enjoyed the lush green deciduous trees and nesting birds checking in on us, among other lovely elements in the calming view from the dining room table and screened in porch. The air conditioning works well, and the rooms make you feel warm and cozy. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware and spices! The king sized bed is the most comfortable we have stayed in to date! We had our dog with us and he was right at home, snoring our feet as we spent one of the days reading and resting. If you want a calm peaceful setting, away from the fray, but not far from a fabulous sushi restaurant, this is the place for you-and your fur family!

Had a great family stay at this property. Property owner and check in/check out processes were easy going, kind and simple. Our children enjoyed access to the childrens’ toys and books as well. The roads leading to the house did require 4WD in the snow and the location was great for skiing at nearby Butternut.

The house had everything one could need. The location was awesome…so close to restaurants , coffee shops, and big Y grocery store. Too cold with our visit, but close to state park and hiking trails. The wood stove was perfect for cozy nights watching movies. Screened in porch with lots of rocking chairs and seating was great to relax with a glass of wine..and yes, it was chilly but still sat out there. You can hear the water from the brook at the edge of the property…which was soothing. We took long drives to explore all the surrounding towns.
Valerie, the host, answered all my questions - quickly. She suggested Old Inn on the Green for our Thanksgiving dinner, which was incredible. She will make your stay perfect!!!

This adorable chalet is a private haven in the woods, yet only a short 15 minute drive to town. The house was clean and comfortable. Valerie goes above and beyond to communicate and make sure you feel welcomed. Hearing the owls every morning was the icing on the cake!

As before, we can’t say enough wonderful things about Valerie and the Owl’s Nest! A clean, inviting, cozy place to stay and enjoy nature in all its glory. There is so much to see in the area. Valerie uses all organic products throughout her house, is very responsive, and thinks of everything. If you look through the library of books and magazines, you’ll not only find enjoyable things to do and learn about the Berkshires, you’ll find ways to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Thank you for another enjoyable visit!!

The cottage is very cute and the owner couldn't have been more considerate. A great getaway surrounded by forest, the only sound you hear is a babbling brook and the owls talking to each other at night.

What a lovely property. Staying at a rental was pushing my BFF’s comfort zone, but I convinced her to give it a try. Because of this lovely rental and overall experience, she is now hooked. The covered porch is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee, listen to the rain on the roof and take in the woods all around. I would love to stay there again when in the area.

My 11 year old daughter and I had the most memorable stay at The Owl's Nest. We arrived on Christmas Day to a winter wonderland and a beautiful chalet decorated for the holidays. We had booked the chalet a year in advance and as soon as we drove up to the house we knew we had chosen the perfect home for us. It is lovely inside and out. Valerie, the owner, has put so much thought and love into this home. From the cozy decor, furnishings, to the well stocked kitchen and tea cabinet we did not want for a thing. Valerie went above and beyond for us making sure we were greeted with a generous gift basket which we so appreciated. The location is ideal: close enough to town and Butternut yet just tucked enough away from the Main Rd to have a sense of privacy and wonder. My daughter loved playing in the snow covered yard and we enjoyed walking down the peaceful country road. We spent several days skiing and tubing and ventured to Stockbridge to see the Winterlights which is not to be missed. We enjoyed exploring downtown Barrington (which was a quick, easy drive from the house). My daughter especially liked visiting Robin's Candy Shop which is fun for the youngsters and the young at heart. We fell in love with the home and the whole area. While magical at Christmas- time, this is definitely an area that offers endless things to do and see every season of the year. We are already dreaming of when we can return and are forever grateful for Valerie's warm hospitality. She is a consummate host and a lovely human being. Happy and Healthy New Year, Pam and Lexie

We had such a lovely December weekend away at the Owl’s Nest!
When we walked into this cozy cabin, we immediately felt welcomed with a lovely basket of treats - delicious wine, cookies and chocolate along with a little note from the owner which included her cell phone number telling us to reach out if we had any issues or questions.
The house is well supplied with everything you could possibly need- kitchen supplies, extra blankets and towels, plenty of games, books and movies and even plenty of wood for the wood stove!.
The sofas are so cozy with down pillows and soft throws to cozy up with!
The weather was mild enough where we could sit out on the screened porch and hear the calming sound of the river that runs behind the property.
We had a fantastic stay and hope to be back again!

Very comfortable with great host communication. Very well equipped and we didn't use 1% of what's offered in the property because the area is so great to explore.

This was our first rental like this (AirB&B, VRBO etc) and I was a little nervous. The Owls Nest was such a delight! So clean and fresh feeling. Beautifully appointed with everything you might need. We will come back!

We had such a lovely time at the chalet. The screened in porch is a breezy, restful retreat. Great hideaway that served as a perfect homebase for Berkshire explorations. And the hosts’ suggestions for local eateries and activities were great!

Perfect Berkshires Getaway
My husband and 4-year-old son just spent the loveliest weekend at Valerie’s Owl’s Nest. The house was the perfect size for our family. The bedrooms were super comfortable, and our son loved the books and toys in his room. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed, and it (along with the rest of the house) was spotless. Our favorite room was the screened in porch with the most relaxing and beautiful view of the woods. We didn’t even bother trying to figure out the cable tv because there were lots of great DVDs to choose from.
The house is about a 5 minute drive to the quaint Monterey Beach, where we relaxed on the sand and kayaked along the gorgeous Lake Garfield. We could’ve spent all day there but had to head into Lenox (an easy 20+ minute drive) for a concert at Tanglewood. So many cultural things to do in the area, and such a quick and beautiful drive to each spot.
Valerie was wonderfully responsive and accommodating. The basket of s’mores ingredients and other treats were the icing on the cake.
Thank you, Valerie, for hosting our wonderful stay! We will definitely be back the next time we’re up in the Berkshires.

Beautiful, peaceful setting yet close to all Berkshire attractions
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. It was beautifully and tastefully decorated, clean and filled with everything we could need. Families will also find books and toys and athletes will be able to use kayaks and bikes. We really enjoyed relaxing in the large screen porch--like camping but in one's livingroom--overall a great experience!

Great home, location, and experience!
We recently stayed at Valerie's property and really enjoyed our time there! Everything was as expected from the posting. We really appreciated the attention to detail around things like having baby gates installed and the kitchen full of amenities. Our family had a great time in this home and would absolutely recommend it (especially for anyone with a toddler and a dog!).

Great Berkshires House
Everything was exactly as presented. House was clean and everything was well stocked. They even left bread/butter and cookies!
Very comfortable living spaces including a great screened in porch. The main bedroom is large, the second bedroom is small but totally fine for small kids or a pop up crib. Bathroom is only downstairs which is standard for houses likes this, the bathroom and shower were great as well.
Great communication with owner throughout the process.
Some of the roads are unpaved to get there, but not too rough. Just would be careful with a cooper mini or something like that.
Will definitely be staying here again!

Serenity in the woods
Entering Valerie’s chalet gave me such a serene feeling. I knew from the moment I opened the front door I was going to enjoy every second of my stay. And I did. It was over and above my expectations. I settled right in with a fire in the wood stove along with the wine and treats That were waiting for me to arrive! The coziness of the home and its location on the backside of Beartown Forest made me feel welcome and comfortable. I look forward to staying here whenever I am able to get to the Berkshires. Monterey is my favorite town in all of Berkshire County! I’m excited to return.

Wonderful woodland setting
Cottage fully equipped dog friendly in perfect location for hiking in the woods. Quiet, cozy but close to Great Barrington. Host is friendly, easy to contact but really no need - she left little signs all over about how to make things work and ideas for nearby recreation and entertainment. Perfect getaway - I hope to return.
