About this bed and breakfast
Welcome to The Butler Hotel, San Luis Obispo’s most exclusive vacation destination. This renovated property, situated at the intersection of Monterey Street and California Boulevard, is your gateway to the incredible offering known as the Central Coast of California.
Enter through the historic 1950’s façade and you’ll immediately find yourself in a sophisticated haven infused with industrial yet modern design. Once inside, you'll discover this building’s industrial façade gives way to an unexpected array of sophisticated modern hospitality details. A striking monochromatic colour scheme contrasts with the existing faded façade of this historic mid-century industrial building.
With its strategic location, luxuriously modern appointments and contemporary atmosphere, The Butler puts you in prime position for a fantastic get-away for any occasion.
The Butler was envisioned as a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience that lay at the intersection of technology, design, and luxury. By repurposing yet respecting the existing industrial structure, this new vacation destination offering creates a unique visitor experience unlike any other. The heavily patina concrete floors and rusting steel panels of the existing building yield no clues as to what lies inside.
Secret passcodes and live video check-in live in harmony with historically significant artwork and repurposed elements, in what we like to call “retro-tech”. This concept continues in each meticulously appointed guestrooms, where you'll find classic mid-century furnishings that celebrate modern design. Feel free to relax in the intimate library lounge, or enjoy an afternoon sitting on the sun-drench outdoor patio. When you’re ready to venture out, our prime location puts you in the center of activity. Whether it’s a day of wine tasting, a mid-day massage, an intimate dinner, or a lively night on the town, the Butler is your gateway to a memorable stay.
You'll find the downtown SLO shopping and entertainment district within easy walking distance. Seek out local shops and galleries that lie just blocks away. Browse independent boutiques and jewelry studios to find that unique piece of the SLO life. The downtown district also boasts numerous award-wining restaurants, cafés and fine-dining experiences guaranteed to satisfy any foodie.
And at the end of the day, the Butler welcomes you back. Each meticulously appointed guest room feature lush carpets, custom lighting fixtures, and individually curated artwork. The elegantly finished bathrooms include floor-to-ceiling porcelain tile, custom marble and walnut counters, and modern furniture & fixtures. Guests are treated to cotton linens, duvets and pillows, along with custom robes, amenities and finishes, all intended to provide a memorable and lasting experience.

The property is very nice. Nice shared spaces to gather.

Fortunately, we were thw only guests while we stayed there. The self check-in was quick and convenient. The small parking lot was thankfully empty. The host was nice enough to leave complimentary drinks. We liked using the french press for our morning coffee, and the overall ambience was pretty and modern.

My husband and I stayed for a few days for a weekend getaway. This spot was the perfect location. Very short walk into town but enough to stretch our legs after enjoying the Farmers Market and the amazing food in SLO. The property was beautiful and well-appointed. Definite Yes!

Hotel Butler worked perfectly for our visit to SLO. Close to Cal Poly. Easy walk to downtown. Property staff were very helpful. Will definitely stay there again!

wonderful place, easy, nice, highly reccommend!

I’m sensitive to traffic noise & drivers seem to rev engines a lot at this busy intersection.
But hotel provides earplugs, which helped. And I played my SleepStream app, which helped.
Lots of great thoughtful touches - enjoyed my stay overall 💝

We mistakenly got our check in time wrong and was graciously accommodated.
Our room was immaculate with plenty of room and stylishly designed. The amenities are of high quality and even though on a busy street it was quiet.
We have stayed in SLO for the past seven years and this will be the only place we stay from now on.

This is more like a hotel than a place all to yourself. They have the check in/out completely figured out. It’s very comfortable. I think there are 6 total rooms. It would be SUPER COOL for a large group to rent the whole thing

I like a place that's centrally located where I can walk to get food and downtown, have a lovely decorated room that's quiet at night with great AC and an amazing bed with a kitchen where I don't listen to the sound of the fridge all night and great customer support, and the Butler has all this! I love that it's a boutique experience where there's limited guests staying and you're not disturbed by staff. Yet, I felt like whatever I needed was a text message away! I used to live in SLO and also stayed in several hotels and VRBO's back visiting over the years, and this is, by far, the VERY BEST!
Just a note, yep, it's on a busy intersection but the road traffic ends around 10pm and the neighborhood is quiet. I'm super sensitive to this, and it passed muster.

The manager was very helpful and gave great advice about local restaurants and directions. Loved the room and the decor.

Quiet, clean, and a perfect little walk from downtown!

This was a great place to stay! I would for sure stay again. The room was modern and clean, the bed was comfortable, and the towels were super plush and soft. The rain shower was an added bonus. I also loved the common area with complimentary coffee, snacks, and wine in the evening. So many nice touches! It is dog friendly, however you can hear people open the main door entrance and walking by the rooms so if you have a dog that barks when it hears people at the door (like mine) it may be an issue at night when people are trying to sleep. A solution to this could be to request room 1 or 2, as these rooms are more towards the front near the street (but you will hear cars driving by). I was in the back, room 6, and could hear no cars but was located right by the entry door so my dog unfortunately barked for a second when he heard people enter/exit. It wasn’t terrible, but it did make me feel bad for the other guests. The parking lot is small and only allows one car per room, but there is free street parking nearby. It’s only about 10 minutes walking distance to all the great downtown stores and restaurants, or you can Uber so you don’t have to deal with the hassle of parking downtown. I have no complaints about my stay, and would definitely book again!

We loved it here! It is by far the best place in SLO!!!

It’s walking distance to downtown, very clean, would definitely come back.

We checked in and there was a nice bottle of wine waiting for us. We loved the location because it was very walkable to places to eat and shop. But, it wasn’t in the middle of the downtown area which we liked. Lots of great coffee shops near by with families and locals walking about. The room and lounge were perfect and all amenities were clean and in working condition. We would definitely stay here again.

Host was very cordial and responsive. Room was very clean and comfortable.

This is very different from the picture. The air stream is not real. There are six rooms in this small lounge. It is virtually impossible to use a lounge. In VRBO, it looks like a hotel with a single bedroom and living room, but the reality is not. I thought it was an act of deceiving the consumer and raised the issue. Only one of the six rooms is registered in VRBO. This means that consumers will be dumb if they book through APP. I used only 2 nights out of 3 nights and 4 days in total and came out. And they asked for a refund for the rest of the day, but they said they did not have the right to refund because the reservation was made through VRBO. Vrbo will have to manage these hotels thoroughly for consumers.

My wife and I stayed for her birthday weekend. They were very accommodating with a complementary champagne for her. It was nice with the dog friendly set up. Food and water bowls with complementary treats. It was nice having French press coffee. The complimentary wine bar was nice too. Lots of great shops and restaurants nearby. Perk was having splash Café, awesome clam chowder bowl. I wanted to take the bikes out, unfortunately the tires were flat. I wanted to listen to the vinyl records, but was having difficulty getting sound. Really nice place though. The shower was amazing by the way.

This place is fantastic. Every detail from the dog bowl with treats for my pup, to the hassle free check in was perfect. This hotel was quiet, quaint and at a perfect location. I will certainly be back!

It’s a gem in SLO. I loved that we could stay there with our dogs. The hosts made things really easy.

super easy to check in and the location was perfect

The room was nice and the coffee bar and refrigerator were nice to have as well. A complementary bottle of wine was left out for us as well. Only two complaints. The room was very small with only a queen size bed and one chair. The other is that it was located off of a very busy and noisy street. Otherwise it was a good stay!

I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 night stay at The Butler Hotel. My room (#4) was spacious, comfortable and quiet. The living room and kitchen areas are shared by the 4 guest rooms and were very well appointed. Nice attention to detail.

We had a great time at the Butler Hotel - it was clean, easy to get access to and was very nicely finished. Overall, a great place to spend a weekend in SLO.

This property is in a central part of town and easy walk to everything downtown. The rooms were very clean and I loved the complimentary coffee/wine spread. The only negative is it is right on a busy street corner, so the traffic can be annoying when you’re trying to sleep in

My husband, our dog, and I stayed at The Butler and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel has an awesome aesthetic and the location is perfect for folks who are traveling with their dog - lots of cool neighborhoods to explore on our morning and evening walks. We will definitely stay here again.

This is a "hotel" but with no staff there. However, they do a great job communicating and they have everything you need available. It is a bit of a walk to downtown, but not bad.

Lovely location. Very welcoming and convenient. Would return in a heartbeat. Pet friendly.

Coordinating with the property manager was seamless and so amicable. Our room was just right for us.

This place is really classy and comfortable and is super close to downtown. The Splash cafe next door has the best clam chowder I’ve ever had too. There’s also a brewery and coffee spot nearby. It’s a really great location. The service was awesome too. There was wine set out for us and a nice little French press bar. Would definitely stay again.

Such a wonderful experience all around. Self checkin was simple and easy…and yet, when we had an issue with the code for our room, someone came down immediately and took care of it. Loved the self serve French press coffee and wine…. We traveled with our senior dog and the room and outdoor space were wonderful. Many local eateries/coffee places very close by and easy to get to anything else we wanted to explore. We are already scheduled to go back!

Place was clean and room was great.

Cheaper or same as a hotel but for the convenience of not being in a hotel and having so many people around and noise. Lovely location. Super cute place. Would stay again.

Was a bit surprised by the ritual check in process. But it worked well. Rooms are a bit small. Bathroom was very good. Property manager was cheerful and willing to help.

The Butler offered just what we wanted — a leisurely walk into downtown and a comfy night sleep after a day of exploring SLO. Kelly was so welcoming and helpful throughout our visit! We will definitely stay at The Butler again!

Could be by far the best location in SLO. We rode bikes (provided by the butler hotel ) through downtown SLO. Enjoyed the design and privacy of our room. Beautiful common areas as well! French presses, oatmeal and bottled filtered water was a sweet bonus! The management was excellent and made us feel special. Can not wait for our next visit and stay at the Butler hotel!
