About this house rental
Enjoy a relaxing stay right on the north Santiam River at the Spring Shire House.
A family-built 2014 house of ~3000 square feet to provide plenty of space for relaxation. It sleeps 14 and can handle more if needed. Nestled on the banks of the North Santiam River, it provides waterfront views and access for swimming, rafting, kayaking, or fishing.
The house is fully furnished and waiting for you! The first floor contains a master bedroom and master bath, with jacuzzi bathtub and shower. Upstairs you will find 3 large bedrooms with spacious closets and queen sized beds. All rooms include a dresser and walk in closet.
Also upstairs is 1 large bonus bedroom with 4 built in bunk beds plus a queen bed and a divan for kids. The bonus bedroom has a unique feature -- a hobbit door for an entry. Round, functional and fun, it is sized for the little people including a peephole. The room is decorated with Hobbit and Lord of the Rings posters and items to add magic to a child's imagination. There is also a stock of toys there for kids of all ages. There is a standard fire door for adult/emergency ingress and egress.
2 full baths upstairs and 1.5 baths downstairs keeps everyone happy. Bathrooms are already stocked with normal toiletries.
Throughout the house you will find bookshelves with books and/or movies to entertain. A smaller TV upstairs will let the kids watch videos or play on the PS2. Downstairs a large 55" TV provides adult viewing options, with both DVD and Blu-Ray capabilities along with a Netflix account. The house has wifi with 5G speed for internet devices and browsing.
The kitchen is fully outfitted including incidental supplies and condiments. Includes a stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator and 2 deep sinks for ease of use. Cupboard contain a full set of dishes, glassware , silverware, cookware and standard spices for dining/cooking in. An ultra quiet dishwasher will handle the mess while everyone enjoys the activities on the first floor. The large island, with 4 bar stool chairs, create a casual eating place if desired.
The great room contains a 12-person dining room table made from polished classic barnwood with matching benches, giving a great feel of country living. Next to it is a small kid-sized table with an inlaid chess/checker board and four chairs. There are additional tables/chairs in a nearby closet for even larger groups.
The room continues to a large sectional couch, recliner, area rug and some chairs and stools. The entire side of the house facing the river has large windows and benches with storage (puzzles and games) and cushions to allow river viewing while relaxing, and plenty of seating. A gas fireplace completes the cozy room.
Outside in the back is a concrete patio with quite a bit of seating, and was recently expanded to wrap around to form another river viewing area on the side of the house as well. If interested, pull the full size BBQ out from the garage and connect it to the propane outlet built into the house for grilling up a quick bite or slow roasting steaks.
Feel free to grab the rafts, paddles and life vests out of the garage for a trip down the river (standard run to a nearby state park takes 90-120 minutes and runs through about 6 rapids, most Class 2 and one Class 3). Or perhaps fishing is your way of relaxing -- grab the poles and tackle box from the garage and see if you can land a steelhead or rainbow trout.
Any visitor will be drawn to the river, with its relaxing hum and cheerful water swirls. It is shallow enough along the bank to allow easy swimming and wading for younger kids but wide enough to allow the rafters and kayakers to slide by with no more disturbance than a wave from the bank. Grab a chair and rest your feet in the cool water, perhaps skip some rocks or just relax and watch the water.
A rope swing on an apple tree and the nearby fire pit (with firewood cut close by) round out the outdoor items. See if the kids can find the secret fairy door hidden somewhere along the base of the house...
Mill City is a quiet town in the foothills of the Cascades and near multiple hikes, parks, and recreational opportunities. Many choices and some legendary pizza distinguish this hidden gem of a community.
This house was built on property owned by our grandfather, who loved the river and passed that down to us. We use the house ourselves and want to share the relaxation and fun that we experience every time we visit. We hope you will enjoy your stay!

Very fun. Lovely home, well stocked and situated for large group. Trash containers full upon arrival, so left or trash in the garage. Not able to use the fireplace, maybe shut off for the summer? Would have appreciated more firewood for the fire pit. Otherwise, amazing time!

This was our second stay and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is well equipped in the kitchen, garage (rafts, fishing, ping pong etc), blankets, towels etc. The property is in a great location and the river is literally in the backyard. We will definitely be back.

The location on the river cannot be beat. The house is set up for large gatherings without a lot of fuss. Set up as a happy space for both kids and adults. There’s enough living room and dining seating to easily accommodate our large family - this is always a challenge for us as our extended family grows. Thank you, Chris, for a wonderful stay.

My family of 5 needed to make a last minute trip to Mill City, the property owner was very responsive and able to accommodate our needs. The property itself is on a quite, private street, right on the beautiful river. The pictures do not do the property justice as it was much, much nicer in person. It is also very well stocked with cooking items and spices, which I always really appreciate. It is located right down town, walking distance to restaurants and grocery stores. We enjoyed our stay so much that we are planning our large family trip at this property next year. I would highly recommend!

We absolutely loved our stay! I wasn't expecting this home to be as well stocked as it was even after seeing reviews that mentioned it. It was great having so many things to choose from in the kitchen to cook with. It was funny when we did dishes & realized we had used 5 cookie sheets but there were still more in the cupboard.
We loved the amount of blankets that were in so many different spots so that there were plenty to choose from. This is truly a fully stocked home. The variety of games was overwhelming! We could have spent the entire time playing them but wouldn't have gotten through all of them.
This was our first time doing something other than a hotel & we loved that the feeling wasn't sterile, it felt "lived in" & loved.
Thank you so much for sharing your home & allowing us to make some amazing memories there!

From the moment we arrived we loved this house. It was roomy, comfortable and well maintained. But our favorite; for everyone of us! was the Santiam River. Peaceful, close to nature and lots of things to do. Most special were the "winks and babble" from the River. Thank you.

Very enjoyable stay
We had a 3 generation family get together ( 12 people ranging in age from 1 to 74) and all had an enjoyable time. There was a good variety of games, books, and movies for different tastes and ages. It was somewhat cool and rainy while we were there so we weren't able to enjoy playing in the river, but we certainly enjoyed the view from the many windows. The house was spacious and comfortable.

Comfortable and relaxing!
We looked for a place with 5 bedrooms and 3-4 bathrooms and by a river. This place was perfect! It was so relaxing to listen to the river rush by. And even though it was early March and pretty cold, we had a great bonfire. The cupboards were well equipped with almost everything we needed to cook our family dinners. The only problems that we had were no propane for the BBQ and the bike pump didn't work. We could have brought them if we had known. But all in all, we loved the place and didn't want to leave.

Perfect Family Retreat
Springshire is awesome! The pictures do not do it justice. The space on the main level was open and airy with a wall of windows that drew you in to views of the beautiful Santiam River. Such a serene spot on a dead end road. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all very high-end down to the sheets and lovely decor. There were even towel sculptures in a couple of the bathrooms!
My siblings and I absolutely loved the spot - brother Denny found a good fishing spot and actually caught a nice sized trout! Sister Nancy and her son Dave took one of the many floaties available for a short but awesome river run. We definitely will go back! Thank you Chris!

River view
This was a beautiful property and had access to the river. You could tie yourself up and float or you can raft down the river which my kids did and it was fantastic. Was such a wonderful trip there wish we could have stayed longer.

The best possible vacation in the Corona time
House was clean, and large for a family of 7 kids and 5 adults ..
Inflatable rafting devices worked well and it was A GREAT FUN on the river. Lot of air leaking rafts, but you can find some that are ok, if you look for it .. WIFi was ok.

Birthday vacation
we celebrate four birthdays in July with ages ranging from 2 to 37. So this trip was a great family adventure with the fun outdoor activities for all ages. The house was well stocked and clean and easily accommodated our group there were a ton of rafts, lifevests and other equipment to play on the river. The outdoor fire pit was really nice to sit around and roast marshmallows at night . One caution I would put in the book for visitors is not to raft anywhere but down stream from the house. We went upstream and five of us went over a 3 foot waterfall, it was quite traumatic but we all made it out The back porch needs railings because the porch is only the width of the door so it’s difficult to open the door and get out of the way, we had a five-year-old fall and scratched her ankle pretty good. otherwise we had a great time and would recommend this house to others.

Fantastic Home & Views
We rented the Shire House in Mill City for a birthday/get away for my niece's 60th birthday and had an absolute fabulous time! The home is huge with everything anyone would need for a get away! It is right on the banks of the Santiam River and has a huge fire pit outside...such a fun place! LOTS of games! This is our second time renting this property and will do so again in the future! Great gathering place. We give this place 5 STARS!

Awesome house
This house was fantastic for our group. We held our Croptoberfest Retreat here and it was a perfect layout. The kitchen is very well stocked anything you could need is here. It was nice to have the extra bathrooms this trip. We even had a massage therapist with us and the hobbit room was perfect for that. We will definitely be back

Best vacation rental for family on Santiam River!
A jewel discovered....modern, spacious, comfortable riverside home with all the amenities you’d wish for.... we had 6 adults & 3 children (ages 11, 7, & 16 months) and all loved their stay! The large 4-bunk room upstairs for the boys with the Hobbit door was so fun. We gave the downstairs bedroom w/en-suite to daughter with the baby and no one upstairs heard any nighttime crying. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking & baking. Plenty of outdoor seating & one evening we had 24 around the campfire with memorable sing-a-alongs and s’mores! With 5 spacious bedrooms and 3.5 baths the house can easily accommodate more people....lots of fun toys, books, movies, & games for all ages. The owner was great with all communications! You can’t go wrong...it’s just a short walk to downtown Mill City, the old bridge & delicious Giovanni’s pizza.
We hiked up to Pamelia Lake, spent a day boating at Detroit Lake, rafted and fished on the Santiam River.....we will return! Thank you!

Second stay at the Spring Shire house
This was our second July staying at the Spring Shire house. Our three generations filled every bed in the house and yet no one ever felt crowded. We love this home and would stay here every summer if we could. I cannot say enough great things about this home and it's owner. After our first stay I left a more detailed review of the home and it's attributes. I simply want to say the home was every bit as great for our second stay. We love this place!

Perfect!
Our family of 4 generations all together for first time. Everyone kept saying how perfect this house worked for us. Very clean, well stocked with plenty of everything. Only thing lacking was no crib or pack n play. Tons of space, beautiful scenery, tons of games, movies, books, yard games, rafts, life jackets, etc... watch out! Rocks are very slippery at river even with water shoes. Caught fish, rafted river, s’mores at fire pit, hiking near by,, table large enough for all of us. Perfect!

Lovely family accomodation
House comfortably accommodated our family reunion of 14, including kids and grandparents. Gorgeous location, quiet dead-end street, let the river soothe your soul. We rafted, hiked, played lawn and board games, rode bikes, walked around town, enjoyed the well-stocked kitchen, spacious living area, and beds for everyone. Everything was great!
