About this house rental
Sunny and bright, loads of light! Come and enjoy our clean, comfortable home away from home!
Our cedar-shaked, one-floor home welcomes you with vibrant flowerboxes and several flower beds on an acre in beautiful Maine. The two bedrooms (one with a double bed, one with twin beds) are complimented by the large sunny family room (with two queen futons) which leads to a private flagstone patio through French doors. The queen sofa bed in the living room is also available for sleeping. There is one full bathroom with bathtub; the shower has great water pressure to wash away your beach day's sand! Washer/dryer on are on site; there is an outdoor clothesline for drying beach towels and suits.
The home is well-suited for gatherings of your family and friends--settle by the indoor fireplace or relax around the outdoor fire pit for an evening campfire. The open-concept, fully equipped kitchen with bay window and the dining area are easily accessible to the large sunny deck via sliders and doors. The gently sloping lawn supports a large area for children to play safely nearby. Our large library of books allows you to read and relax whether you are out on the deck, down at the Point, or sitting on the beach! Our collection of DownEast magazines may help you plan your Maine adventures and excursions during your stay. And for those rainy days, there are many games and puzzles!
Famous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse lies just south down the road (2.5 miles) and the white sands of Pemaquid Beach are 1 mile east. We are located in the village of New Harbor with a quaint, fully-stocked grocery store, gas station, hardware/fishing gear store, ice cream stand, Maine artists' galleries & craft shops, and a bank/ATM all within walking distance from the house. New Harbor is central to all Midcoast Maine cities and towns--Freeport to Camden are within an hour of travel time. The twin cities of Damariscotta/Newcastle are the closest 'big' towns to our home.
Water sports (kayaking/canoeing, sailing, swimming (ocean, lake, river swimming 'hole'), fine restaurants, birding, Hardy Boat Tours (including Monhegan Island and the Maine coast), hiking, shopping/antiquing are all within several miles of our home. The Botanical Gardens in Boothbay are a must see! For children, there are many activities: beach fun, tide pool explorations, hands-on activities at the local Colonial Pemaquid Museum and the Boothbay Harbor Aquarium to name a few.

We had a two night stay in beautiful New Harbor. Close to the beach, sights, and restaurants. House was very clean & well appointed kitchen. Loved sitting out in the deck for lunch and late afternoon sun. Just need to mention it is 3 stairs down to Kitchen, back bedroom, & bath if there are accessibility issues.

We stayed here for two nights. Location is perfect for the Bristol, New Harbor, Pemaquid area. We appreciated that the house was dog friendly so we could bring our pets. One thing to note is the layout of the house, its all one long row, and the bedroom with the full size bed is located such that people need to pass through it to get from the front door to the rest of the house. Overall we enjoyed our stay here.

Returned for our second stay after our initial rental last year. This is a clean, comfortable home with character. The location makes for a short drive to the lighthouse (and a short walk to the ice cream stand). The homeowner is friendly and responsive - really easy to deal with!

we were in town for a wedding and stayed two night and it was perfect for that, close to town and the venue

Great location, walkable to (non chain) grocery sore with a surprisingly substantial selection of items as well as a nearby local craft shop. Cottage was clean, homey and much larger than we anticipated. We had an enjoyable time seeing the area sights, all in all a great stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here in New Harbor. The quiet and solitude of that area was great, and early morning runs to Pemaquid Beach and down to the lighthouse - wonderful! Also close enough to Damariscotta and other towns was perfect. Thank you! The house itself- quiet, very clean, with everything we wanted.

The house is in a great location. The circular driveway made for easy access. It's much larger inside than it looks in photos, plenty of room for everyone. The kitchen is very well outfitted. Leaving the guests paper goods to get started was a nice touch. We often travel with pets, so we've certainly stayed in not as nice places (accidents happen, we get it, that's why we diaper our senior boy just in case - he's 16), but with the pet and cleaning fees, I was not expecting to see old stains on some rugs. I AM grateful that there are homes that welcome pets, sometimes it's a necessity not a choice.
A very pleasant time was had by all.
Thank you Martha

We loved our stay at this property. We got in exhausted after flight issues, and were so pleasantly surprised. Even ice cubes in the trays & chilled mugs in the freezer. Cozy & welcoming. Clean and well stocked just like home. Martha has done such a great job with carefully selected and thoughtfully placed decor. Vintage maps of the area, a great Oriental rug collection, handmade quilt items in each room. Every room is themed. The main living room has books, maps, magazines, & flyers from many local attractions, as well as fiction, classics, and travel in the area. Also plenty of card games, board games, and puzzles for pretty much all ages. The lighthouse is 2 miles down the street, the beach is around the corner. The variety store is a short walk, like 3 minutes. (They had everything we needed from postcards to fresh fruit.) If you are looking for a brand new unit with Ikea furniture then this house isn't your place. If you want cozy, interesting, comfortable, and feels-like-home then this is for you. We loved it and would stay here again in a heartbeat. Martha made us feel very welcome and like instant friends!

Martha's place was amazing. Very quaint with a lot of fun features to discover. Great location - 15 minutes from downtown Damariscotta. The fireplace was especially cozy.

The home was very convenient for our plans (boat trip to Monhegan), although there were a few discrepancies with what was on line and the actual rental, particularly no fire pit. We also couldn't find quite enough pillows or at least pillow covers for the pillows we wanted to use. Also, although it did mention it in the lease, having to bring your trash up the street to the dump was a bit of a hassle. We were traveling in a small convertable so the trash bag had to sit in our lap, and the dump was closed on Labor Day, our departure day, so I had to go past the gate and just leave the bag anywhere (all the dumpsters looked already sorted for recycling). Also having to replace all the used paper goods was a bit weird. We used very little and there is not a store right nearby. Also, there was only one bottle of hand soap in the kitchen, no soap at all in the bathroom. As I stated previously, great location for our plans, and allowing a dog were the biggest advantages for this home. There were just a few quirks that I hadn't encounterd before in a VRBO.

This was our first time staying here and in Bristol and we were totally charmed. We love the proximity to the beach, beautiful preserves, and to the local grocery store. The home was spacious, well appointed, and very comfortable for my mom, my husband and myself. Thank you so much for the wonderful visit.

The house is comfortably furnished and decorated with enough personalized touches to set it apart from the cookie cutter look of many hotels/motels. It's surprisingly long, front to back, so people can gather together or enjoy alone time.
The homeowner is friendly and responds quickly to all inquiries. The location is just 2.5 miles from Pemaquid Point lighthouse, and less than half that distance (in the opposite direction) to a small, collection of stores (food market, ice cream stand, gas station.
Both the home and the area are highly recommended!

Our family of five was very glad to have the opportunity to discover Maine from this wonderfully homey place. We had a comfortable stay, and really appreciated bedding and towels were provided, the kitchen was fully equipped, and there was plenty of entertainment in form of games, books and local magazines, and a TV. The place felt clean without feeling sterile, and private without being cold. This location also affords to not be completely dependent on a car, which is a quite a rare thing, as one can shop for groceries, get ice cream, visit the craft co-op on foot, and, if inclined to walk for a longer time, we found it was possible to reach the New Harbor ferry that way as well. Our stay was short, so we were able to keep our days full and sample a little bit of everything without having to go far. We had a great time and are very grateful to Martha for this home away from home!

Property was as advertised. While close to the road with light traffic, the house rambles away from it, with easy living spaces, comfortable seating in living room, and a kitchen/dining area with windows and glass doors to the patio and an expanse of greenery in back. After entering through a big furnished room, close to the driveway/road, with two futon sofas and furniture, you then enter the house through the bedroom with a full-size bed (somewhat soft). The single bathroom is at the other end of the house, before the 2nd bedroom with two twin beds. So, nice, light, gathering space in the middle, while distant bedrooms allow for privacy. Front entry room would be a plus if you have kids who need to flop around away from adults. Fine for a 3-night stay. Wonderful walking proximity to Harbor Ice Cream, a good Market, and wonderful baked goods at Abundant. Easy drive to nature reserves in South Bristol or to Pemaquid Point.

Martha was an amazing and generous hostess. My dogs and I were moving from Texas to Maine which involved MANY different stops and living arrangements while waiting for our forever home. Martha made the whole process so much easier and was incredibly supportive in oh so many ways. I was not only taken care of, I made a new friend!

The Peninsula has a lot to offer for beauty and things to do. However, upon arrival I was a bit surprised to find that I had to go through a bedroom from the front door to get to the living room and kitchen.
Even though it was in the contract I was surprised to be charged for credit card transactions to pay for my stay. Not sure if there was one or two charges for $16 each. I thought this excessive since there was already a service, cleaning fee, tax and nightly rate.
The kitchen was small but the living room area was cozy.

Liked the cottage. Apart from mini groceries it was well stocked. Martha and James were immediately there when I needed help. Only problem was TV reception which James was "Johnny on the spot" and it was fixed. Best part was that they did not interfere, only when I called.

This house is a perfect place for 7 or more people to spend a relaxing vacation. It has everything you need and plenty of areas to hang out and even get some privacy. Location to explore Maine is excellent. The circular parking makes it easy to come and go and the porch in the back is the perfect place to end the day.

We really enjoyed our three-night stay at Martha's cottage while we were visiting Maine colleges with our daughter. We only wish we could have stayed longer. We walked to the grocery store and the ice cream stand and drove to the nearby light house, the beach, and restaurants. The cottage was very spacious and comfortable for only three people. It can accommodate a much larger group, although there is only one bathroom. The kitchen was very well equipped for our needs, and we enjoyed eating at the kitchen table and out on the deck. I loved the traditional Maine/New England decor! Martha was very helpful and responsive whenever we had questions. I hope we can return some time. Thanks, Martha!

We absolutely loved staying in the area of Bristol. This house is located perfectly. It is situated on the main road through town which makes it within 5 minutes of just about everything—Pemaquid Lighthouse, Pemaquid Beach, New Harbor (Hardy Boat and Shaw’s Restaurant), Rachel Carson Salt Pond, and Pemaquid Harbor which is home to Maine Kayak (the BEST thing we did on our visit) and the old Fort. You can also walk to the small, adorable town grocery store and ice cream stand. The neighbors were very friendly and the area was quiet and safe.
The house is quite quirky, which at first felt strange, but we grew to love it! We did not feel like we stayed in a sterile rental property but instead felt like we stayed the week at our grandma’s house. Once we got settled in it felt comfortable and homey. Martha was very sweet and helpful. This was our first time ever visiting the north east. We are from Kentucky and usually go south or west for vacation. So, this was an amazing experience for us.
**THE CONS**
I am giving it a rating of 4 stars because the house could use some maintenance work and some updating. The outside of the home is where the most work is needed. The landscaping and flower beds were badly, badly overgrown. There were giant weeds with thorns and burrs all along the porch (like I am talking as tall as my 6 year old!) and the kids kept accidentally brushing against them while playing outside. It looked like the flower beds hadn’t been tended to at all this season and maybe even last year too! I was looking forward to seeing the nice flower beds because it is listed as one of the perks of the house in the listing, but they no longer look the way they look in the listing photos. The outdoor plastic furniture also needs replaced. It is old and brittle. I am very petite and when I sat in the chair it began to crack as if it was going to break. We chose to not use them as to avoid injury and only used the wrought iron patio set for the week. There was also a portion of the yard/driveway by the garage that I had to tell my kids to avoid because I found several rusty nails on the ground. I believe maybe they are popping out of the siding and falling to the ground? Either way—the property has SO much potential and we still VERY much enjoyed our stay, I just feel like the outdoor space needs a spruce up to make the experience more enjoyable and safe for renters.

July 2021 Review
New Harbor and Pemiquid Point is where my mother’s family has lived for generations and is my favorite place to visit. I always feel like the real world is 1,000 miles away while sitting on the rocks at the lighthouse. For this trip, we needed more room to accommodate my two children and their spouses so we decided on this cute cottage.
This home is cozy in the perfect location to see all the sights. It’s traditional New England charm adds to the overall Maine experience.
The owners were so accommodating and easy to work with. Plus, the washer and dryer are Amazing!

My friends had an incredible time here. There were 12 of us plus two babies and there was plenty of room and then some. The lawn overlooking the water was a great place to hang out and we were close to lots of hikes and adventures on the quieter side of the island. Highly recommend!

Well used place
This is a large property, much larger than we needed. It was convenient to the places we wanted to visit. The owner was responsive when we had a leak in the washer supply and promises that a new washer is on order so that it will fill the tub in less than an hour.
The kitchen is fully equipped. In fact, there are many duplicate items.
I got the feeling that the owner uses this for family gatherings, and has for years since there are lots of futons, games, and books.
