We had a great time in Hill City. Ken was very accommodating and friendly. The property was centrally located, which was great for mealtimes and being able to just walk down the road to get pizza or sit down at a restaurant. The 1800s train stop is right across the street, but the noise wasn't bad at all. It doesn't run super early or late, so it doesn't interfere with sleep at all. We loved walking downtown and visiting the shops. We particularly enjoyed the popcorn/nut shop with the delicious old-fashioned taffy.
The only thing I noticed that was different from the listing is that it said there were two queen and two twin beds upstairs - but in actuality, it's just one queen bed in the upstairs bedroom, two twin beds on the upper landing outside the bedroom, and a little futon (this is in addition to the two bedrooms with queens on the main floor and two twins in the basement). It changed our sleeping arrangements a bit, but it wasn't anything we couldn't handle.

The house was a great place to stay. Located near Main St and 1880s train in Hill City. Within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The main road outside was busy but it wasn't distracting inside the house. Very clean, plenty of blankets and towels for everyone. We really enjoyed our stay.

We enjoyed our stay at this roomy house on Main Street in Hill City. Very convenient for getting to all of the Black Hills attractions and activities. House was clean and owners were very attentive to needs as they arose. Was nice to be able to walk to shops and restaurants in Hill City.

Great location and very clean. 2 issues.
1: The TV is not cable and so there are 3 controls and no instructions as to how to use it. Therefore, I was not able to access the main stations.
2: The coffee pot does not turn itself off. Found this out the hard way. This is VERY dangerous.
Other than those 2 things everything was great.
Thanks for sharing your home.

We were impressed with the convenience and comfort of this property. We took a lot of day trips and the location was central to all the sites we wanted to see. The property was well-maintained and comfortable. We loved the beds! Our hosts were great about communication and made sure we had all the information we needed for a smooth, trouble-free stay.

The rail house is a very spacious home ready for you to walk in and take a load off. Besides your groceries and clothes for your stay, you don’t need to bring anything! The owner has great communication and has thought of everything.

It was very clean, organized and well maintained but way too noisy! Beds were clean and very comfortable. A few minor things like the coffee pot didn't work and the smoke alarm battery went dead so it beeped until we disconnected it. Overall, it was a great rental for us because it was close to everything we wanted to see and visit

Our family stayed for 6 nights. Great location for a family doing “family” friendly activities. Across the street from 1880 Train Depot. Our 5.5 year old loved seeing the train each day. The house was clean, stocked with all needed items, and was in a great location so we were not having to drive too far each day for our activities.

We could watch the 1880 train from the living room and porch, walking distance to Hill City Main Street and a short drive to Mt Rushmore. Some things need minor repair but overall enjoyed our stay.

Great spot in Hill city! Nice short walk to downtown. It is right on the Main Street so be aware there will be some street noise for those sensitive to it.

First, Ken is an accommodating and communicative host! He made sure we knew about all the local attractions and restaurants, and that he would be available should we need anything. Thanks, Ken!!
Second, the house was perfect for our needs. It's in a great location and is a good size. There were four of us staying from Thurs-Tues and we had plenty of room to spread out and have our own space. The beds were very comfortable (normally I find it challenging to sleep anywhere except in my own bed), there was plenty of bedding, and the rooms were quiet (with the addition of a fan). I usually sleep with a fan and brought my own, and we found an extra in a closet. If there are more in your party who need fans just know you may need to bring/ask for more.
Other things that are helpful to know: There are 8-9 deck chairs (no need to bring your own camp chairs), a wood fire pit outdoors and an electric fireplace indoors, a gas grill, plenty of dishes, silverware, mugs, seasonings, condiments, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, etc. The only thing we could not find was a hairdryer, it could be hiding somewhere, but no matter, we all just air-dried our hair.
There's a coffee shop a few doors down with delicious coffee, the Mickelson trail is right out the door, and Custer and Keystone are both about 20 minutes away.
We didn't notice the train whistle in the early morning at all, and the times we did hear it it was a lovely soft "toot toot" old West whistle. I was initially worried about this since I'm somewhat of a light sleeper. Overall, great stay, can't say enough good things!

Fabulous house and location!
We all very much enjoyed our stay. The house was spacious and perfect for two families to stay. It was very well stocked, too. Loved the location and beautiful hiking trail nearby! So happy we chose to stay here.

Location, location, location
This property was centrally located to everything we wanted to do. Ken greeted us upon arrival and gave us some great suggestions for food and travel options. This is a nicely remodeled older home with charm and quirks. We made use of the grill and the fire pit and enjoyed that it was walking distance from the downtown area. Our only concerns were the lack of banisters on the stairs (no one had any trouble going up and down, we were probably more careful for the lack) and that the water didn't get hotter than tepid. Neither of which we mentioned to Ken at the time, because they were minor. We had a lovely time and would highly recommend this property.

Fantastic!
This house is even better than the pictures. Every inch has been remodeled so it's like a brand new house. Everything we needed was included... paper towels, coffee, dish & laundry soap, shampoo, conditioner, toilet paper, hangers, etc. The kitchen appeared to be well stocked, but we ate out while we were there. My 2 biggest concerns about staying away from home are the bed and the shower. Thankfully the bed and bedding was super comfortable, there were extra blankets and even a fan in the closet. and the downstairs shower has good water pressure (didn't use the upstairs). The deck is a great area for coffee in the mornings or wine in the evenings. A gas grill and a fire pit are provided. Shops, museums, restaurants, and attractions are all within a few blocks. The Mickelson Trail is right next door. Ken is very friendly and available for restaurant and activity suggestions. We didn't have any problems during our stay, but if we had, I have no doubt that Ken would have responded to a text or phone call immediately. The house is truly lovely. If you're traveling with kids they will love having their own space. A word of caution, if you have small dogs like ours (10 pounds) you have to keep your eyes on them while in the yard. There are spaces on either side of the gate that they can fit through and they can fit under the fence between the neighbor's yard. Also, there aren't any screen or storm doors so untrained pups like ours try to dart outside. If I was forced to come up with something negative it would be a lack of hooks in the bathroom or on the back of the bedroom door for towels and robes, but that is literally the only thing I can think of that this place is lacking.
We have already recommended the house to our neighbors.
Thanks, Ken for sharing your home with us.

Good place
On the lower end of VRBO s we’ve stayed at, but adequate. Probably good for the area and availability.
I discussed some of the things that concerned us with the owner, and he said he’d address them. Very friendly owner.
Great launching point for all day trips in the Black Hills area of S.D.

Great place and great location!
This was a great place to stay. Plenty of room for 5 adults and 3 children. Well taken care of and felt like home! It's centrally located so it was really easy to get to all of the attractions. It was a pleasant surprise to be greater by the owner when we arrived and he gave us some recommendations for restaurants and things to do. We will definitely stay here again!

Cute house, nice updates, fully stocked with necessities,, convenient location
If the cleaning team had paid attention to the linens, it would have been a 5 star property. Bedsheets and pillow covers had hair on them.

House worked great for the 8 of us 4 wheeling. Had plenty of parking and space inside. Very clean and up to date.

Great for larger family and pets
We particularly enjoyed the ability for our family to spread out and enjoy after long days of hiking, site-seeing, etc. The fenced area was perfect for our 2 dogs, we loved being so close to the Mickelson trail for biking, walking dogs, etc. and could easily walk down the main road to get to coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping. It is right on the main road into town, so it's a little loud for sitting outside by campfire and need to keep an extra eye on little kids and dogs. Overall we really enjoyed our time in Hill City and would definitely stay in this house again. Ken was very helpful and easy to get in touch with.

Lovely home in a fun area.
We had a wonderful time staying in Ken's property. Everything was clean and just as described in the listing.
My favorite things were that all linen, towels, pillows and extra blankets were provided. I loved not having to bring shampoo and conditioner on our plane ride. There were more than enough places to sleep for our family of 7, we didn't even use the lower floor. We cooked in the kitchen and had everything we needed to make our meals.
Ken was kind, accessable and gave us lots of good recommendations on local fun.
Hill city is lovely and right in the middle of all the touristy fun. We saw Mount Rushmore, explored a cave, panned for gold, explored a mine, adventured in an adventure park including a 2-3 hour ropes course, went to TWO dinosaur museums, explored a mirror maze and enjoyed the yummy candy and coffee shops in the area. All in 4 days!! We had a blast and hope to come again!
The house is on a busy road which during peak hours gets busy but other than that it's beautiful.
