Stunning historical building and gardens. Our favourite feature of the property was the fact that all the fires were laid and ready to light in the many sitting rooms. We had a lovely few hours sitting in front of the fire with a bottle of local red after dinner. Also they are very dog friendly which our spoilt Pomeranian was very happy about.

We were in the area for a wedding. The hotel was conveniently located. The room was sizeable and the bed was comfortable
The operators of this hotel have cunningly devised an operation that allows them to avoid all contact with guests. We arrived at check in time to find the entire hotel deserted and no one answering the phone. Eventually we found a cleaner, who deduced from the bed configuration we had requested which room we were in and told us that usually guests received a message with their room number and the key would be in the room (we had not received a message).
We were excited for the much lauded “breakfast included” and turned up the following morning to a leaky (it was raining) tin roof lean to extension where breakfast consisted of a selection of individual packaged cereals, some pre-made pancakes and a pile of half eaten loaves of supermarket bread next to a toaster which itself was perilously close to a drip from the leaking roof. A bar fridge housed some milk, juice and empty containers of yoghurt - efforts to find someone to restock the yoghurt were in vain. The only communication from the staff was an aggressive sign telling us to clear our own plates into a dish washing try on the side of the room.

Historic property with nice gardens
Room was spacious
There was only communication by email. From arrival to departure no staff available to speak to. Phone went unanswered and no later reply. The breakfast was self service from a very limited selection of supermarket bread , tub of communal yogurt, limited spreads and orange juice in original plastic container in frig. Not nearly good enough for the premium prices charged for the room. Obviously saving on staff costs. Noise from trains across the road, creaking floorboards from rooms above and a musty smell throughout. Disappointed.

Very comfortable room & bed in a beautiful old building surrounded by lovely gardens. Continental breakfast offered an array of cereals, bread & juices.
Nothing

Very welcoming, an exceptional stay

The continental breakfast was good for my partner but being a coeliac there was only gf white bread for breakfast and no separate toaster.

location and idea of historic house…but our room was in a separate, not historic building. Decor was tired, stained carpet, sheet (!!) and wall, water stains in bathroom and on wooden bench.
see above….disappointing given the price and breakfast basket was dreadful. worse than bad lot of rubbish you would expect in an outback 1 star hotel. Not an area with the quality of produce of the highlands!!

Loved the historic nature of the accommodation and, combined with the friendly and attentive staff, the relaxed and comfortable atmosphere was lovely to experience.
I liked everything but it is worth noting that the hotel is slightly out of mittagong centre

Nothing to like - it was impersonal, dirty, uncomfortable and overpriced
Everything was awful- poor noisy location, dirty room, uncomfortable bed , No security.

Bed was super comfy, as was couch, very peaceful, spa was great. All clean and tidy. Grounds are gorgeous. Lovely ambience, charming.
Breakfast was a little too basic. Aldi brand snacks not what I expected at a $400+ per night accommodation. There was 1 small heart chocolate on the bed for us- a couple on our wedding anniversary - odd!! No milk frother with coffee machine to make the coffee properly. Not enough milk to use for cereal and coffee for 2 in the morning. Only 1 coffee pod each available for overnight stay. For "continental breakfast included" it seemed not well thought through.

It was spacious and warm inside the room after a long time of waiting for heater to kick in, it was a historic site
The bathroom floor extremely dirty, hardly any water coming out of the basin tap, only cold water even though we ran it for a good 10 minutes still no hot water. Bathroom is a wet room, even though it was dry it looked like mud had dried onto it. I thought it's stained that way until I ran a tissue over it to see how filthy it was. had to place towels on floor to walk in our socks into the bathroom. Heater was not turned on for us when we arrived at around 4pm and I had to ask them, took a long time to heat up the room. We arrived an hour earlier than planned but still it would had been cold. Remaining of property had no heating. We were not able to shower because of the floor issue but also with no hot water. Breakfast was poor 2 Aldi quality tiny apples, 2 Aldi quality muesli bars, 1 small individual serve pack of Just right cereal and 1 small individual serve of Wheat bix, 2 Aldi quality packed chocolate Croissants. Junk food apart from the apples. One small UHT milk. 2 tetra packs of Aldi apple juice. No bowls, no cutlery. It really doesn't take rocket science to serve up an acceptable continental breakfast at $325 for a night we really expected more, specially as that was more expensive than the Peppers we stayed at the night before with a full hot breakfast, a lit fire place and complimentary wines. The house is old and musty and that is ok because of it's age. But, it is such a shame it has been very badly neglected. No staff to be providing repairs and maintenance, seems they are cutting corners, and there was no one there on a Saturday night. No staff working or operating after 5pm.
Very sad to see a business not cared for, it has huge potential if managed properly. Yes money would have to be invested to bring it up to a standard for the asking nightly accomodation rate and to match other properties in the area. It is a historic site but it should not rely on that for it accomodation quality. I would not return

the breakfast was self service - basic but worthwhile

beautiful historic home. the house can be viewed with a self guided tour, is well decorated and beautifully kept.
We have stayed there before in a building, The Schoolmasters House, seperate to the main house. These rooms are spacious with seating areas and views over the garden - quite lovely accomodation. This time we stayed in the main house which is the old inn, the rooms are much more compact. We had booked a “garden view room”. Our room on the 1st floor had no outlook at all, just 2 dormer windows which were too high to see out. This was disappointing and, although the room was quite nice, I would recommend anyone to stay in the Schoolmasters house to enjoy space and also the beautiful gardens.

The courtyard is beautiful. Although the building is old, it is well protected and clean. I like it very much. I can hear the train passing at 12:00 pm, but it doesn't affect my rest
The lady responsible for cleaning the room should knock at the door and ask before entering Instead of opening the door and trying to get in.

Lovely location and the history of the place was a great feature. It was hard to initially find our room but it was comfortable. As an old guest house, it was a fun place to stay, with lots of parking and lovely gardens. If one is looking for a modern and plush hotel, this is not the place but we enjoyed the old style of the house and found the room extremely comfortable.
The room was hard to find and we had to make a few calls as the staff were offsite. They were helpful and it was quickly sorted.

Beautiful historic Inn. Loved the room and surroundings, fascinating self guided history tour. Very quiet and cosy in our room.
The king size bed was very hard making sleep uncomfortable and the TV was small and kept shutting off for no reason? Very few staff, No restaurant or bar facilities everything self service.

Wonderful stay in historic inn through which you can take a self-guided tour at your leisure. Lovely big room with all comforts and facilities provided. Great breakfast pack provided and great kitchen facilities in main house. Lovely recreational areas provided in main house and surrounded by pretty gardens.
We were given a different room to what we booked - located in separate building and located up steep stairs, so difficult to access with luggage.

Staff very confused on arrival. Taken to two different rooms before they finally got it right and moved us to our correct room.

It was well named as it is a "Historic Retreat". The place was fantastic, well maintained and a good sample of our Australian Historic buildings. The grounds looked great but didn't get to walk around because of the weather. Nice they put on a lightning storm during our night there. Separate toilet & shower, both clean and modern. Couldn't think of a better place to stay in Mittagong. Thanks.
It was all great.
