About this house rental
Why stay at Fern Grotto Inn? The reasons are as numerous as our glowing guest reviews. In fact, Fern Grotto Inn recently became the best-rated vacation rental and was featured in Lonely Planet—all thanks to our warm hospitality, prime location, and super cute plantation cottages.
One of the best parts about Fern Grotto Inn is our central location. Why limit yourself to Princeville or Poipu, when you can stay with us and easily drive to both the North and South Shores within 45 minutes?
For a little outdoor fun, check out our COMPLIMENTARY two-person KAYAK and “his and her” BIKES. The coastal bike trail is only one block from Fern Grotto Inn, and we’re conveniently located right on the Wailua River and of course, there’s plenty to do locally—we’re only one block from the pristine swimming beach at Lydgate Park, and Kapaa’s many stores and restaurants are just a few miles away.
The real attraction of Fern Grotto Inn is our secluded, vintage plantation cottages. Originally constructed in the 1940s and 1950s, our six cottages have been fully renovated with your comfort in mind while still retaining their authentic Hawaiian charm. We've outfitted each one with chic but cozy island-inspired decor.
Our cottages are surrounded by a lush, tropical garden, which, combined with the fact that our property is very quiet and private, creates the feeling that you’re in old-time Hawaii, far from civilization. It’s the perfect setting for your honeymoon or other romantic getaway.
Here’s a brief description of Ohana House. A 14.962 percent tax will be applied to the rates quoted below. For more information and pictures, please visit our website.
OHANA HOUSE offers guests 1,200 square feet of luxury. Insider you’ll find three bedrooms, three bathrooms, hardwood floors, air conditioning, and a large kitchen and dining area. There’s also a small porch that overlooks the garden. Ohana House sleeps up to six guests comfortably, but it’s also a great option for couples who want more space. Two bedrooms have queen-size beds, and a third has two twin-size beds.

We have been to Kauai several times but found Ohana House at Fern Grotto to be the best yet. The house was fully stocked with all the amenities, the grounds were beautiful, the additional water equipment and bikes were a huge bonus. The location was great too. Highly recommended.

Great amenities. Appreciated the bikes, boogie boards, umbrellas, SUP and beach towels. Perfect location for day trips all over the island. Very well stocked kitchen. The swans and flowers upon arrival were a bonus.

This place was perfect for our adult family of 5. The bikes made it easy to get around, and we made use of the kayaks and paddle boards on the river. The kitchen is well stocked with basics, and the beds are very comfortable. Would happily stay again.

Great house!
Our 6-person group really enjoyed the house. Maybe the most well-stocked house we've stayed in, very comfortable home with every room getting it's own bathroom. Paul was very responsive and easy check in/out. Only downsides to the house are not the easiest walking access to the beach (for elders in our group) and a bit noisy from the road nearby. But the house itself and central location for the island was fantastic.

Wonderful property and staff!
We stayed here for more than a week and the property met and exceeded our expectations! The Ohana unit is gorgeous and full of Hawaiian charm. The garden is immaculate and peaceful. We picked fresh, ripe fruit off of the trees. We used the beach and kayaking equipment (we kayaked up the Wailua river to go to Fern Grotto). The house is also centrally located, so you can easily get to the North shore or Waimea or Poipu. We really enjoyed our stay here and would come back! Paul and the rest of the crew are amazing! :-)

Kauai Stay
This is truly a great property. Bikes, kayaks and other gear available for guests. The inlet to the river for kayaking is a big plus. Fresh fruit on the trees is a big plus. I recommend this property to anyone. You will not be disappointed.

Perfect vacation
The Fern Grotto Inn is perfectly located. We covered the entire island. Very centrally located. Has everything you could want. Access to beach chairs, snorkel gear, ice chest, kayaks, SUP, etc. was a huge bonus. Paul thought of everything. The house was beautiful. Felt like home. We will definitely be back and recommend the Fern Grotto Inn to everyone. You will love it. Thanks for everything!

The family that runs it is very kind and they provided excellent extras in the house. That said, we were woken up regularly throughout every night by loud cars and trucks bombing down the road. The house sits close to the highway, but even closer to the main artery into a major subdivision. We described it like pitching a tent under the freeway. It made for unpleasant evenings, difficult naps for our daughter, and uncomfortable lounging outside. In addition, the property is next to a public park where people would sit in their cars with the radio blasting. Also, this house does not stand alone. It is part of a multi-unit property and there was construction of a giant home about 20 feet away during the week. There were no cut in fees for having the construction noise while we were there. I suggest spending some of that money on insulating the house and upgrading windows. This is obviously an issue since there were bowls of ear plugs in every room, but I felt duped because I didnt read about the noise issue when I was researching this house. We spent thousands of dollars expecting a tranquil vacation of lounging around, and were discouraged. For the same amount of money we could have stayed in ocean front property, but thought a river scene would be fun. This is our 3rd annual trip and we will not be staying here again.

Dear Juma Family,
Our stay at the Fern Grotto Inn was everything we hoped for. We rented all of the cottages and Ohana House. Ohana was perfect for the family grathering. The classic country kitchen large enough to accomodate all of the cooks and seat everyone. From reading material and games, beach equipment and coolers, and even a crib and booster seat you have thought of everything. The location is perfect to so many things on the island. Just withing a few miles of our "Ohana Home", there was so much to do. Our 40th wedding anniversary was made even more special by the beautifully kept homes and grounds. We hope to be back soon.

Thank you for sharing your lovely bit of Kauai with us.
This is a great location - a good walk to the beaches a short drive to the shops.
Your kindness and hospitality were much appreciated (& we were so happy to have that electric tea kettle, Paul).

A beautiful property. We stayed in the Ohana House, and were very pleased. It was clean, spacious, and exceeded all of our expectations. It is off the main road, so the only noise is the occasional roster. The house itself is beautiful. We were very pleased at how large and well stocked the kitchen was -- everything from a blender to a dishwasher (and multiple gas grills outside!). And each of the three bedrooms has its own bathroom. Only a short walk to the beach (although you have to cross a busy intersection). Paul and his family were wonderful hosts, and I hope to return again.

We took over the big house and two of the cottages for a week for a 50th birthday (dubbed Hawaii five-0) family gathering. As good as Fern Grotto looked on line, it was even much better in person. The houses have been restored with such loving care, and we could all gather at Ohana. The hospitality was first rate, and location perfect...not too touristic, very old Hawaii. Loved it, and hope to come back, Barry

I organized the trip for my husband and I and two of my best friends and their spouses in Kapaa for a mutual friend's wedding. Wow did we make the right choice! Staying at the Fern Grotto Inn was perfect for our group of 6 adults. We each were able to have our own bedroom and bathroom giving the perfect amount of privacy & personal space. The home was tastefully decorated and perfectly accommodating. We loved having the washer and dryer and the free WIFI to stay connected to home. Thanks Paul! Our gracious hosts, Paul and Nausheen were wonderful. Prior to our arrival, they converted the two twins to a king for one of our couples. When we inquired about boogie boards, they realized they were "running low" and went immediately to purchase some for our recreation. It made for many fun days at the beautiful Kauai beaches! We would definitely love to return to the Ohana house or another one of their houses. P.S. Their boy and girl toddlers are also the cutest things I've ever seen.:)

Our family (six adults) had the most wonderful time staying in Ohana House. The separated bedrooms gave us privacy when we wanted it, and the fabulous "community room" (kitchen/dining area) provided a great area for us all to hang out together. The home is wonderfully appointed with great attention to details. You truly feel like you are in your own Hawaiian home. The central location of the property in relation to the rest of the island makes it convenient to see the many splendors Kaua'i has to offer. Paul, Nausheen and their adorable twins are wonderful hosts. We will definitely be coming back!
