About this house rental
Welcome to Portland, a perfect family and fishing destination at all times of the year.
Barleycorn Inn offers a casual and relaxed atmosphere and guests are provided with everything to make their stay enjoyable and comfortable. However of more importance is what you can do while you are here and who you can bring: PETS ARE WELCOME!
While it can be common for guests to say they were reluctant to leave the house Barleycorn Inn is conveniently located within easy walking distance or 2 minutes drive to Portland's beaches, sporting facilities, shops and cafes and playparks.
With less that 100 metres to Portland Bay Clifftop reserve and the Great South West Walk nature enthusiasts, whale watchers and pet owners will be keen to explore.
Once in the car it is only minutes to Cape Bridgewater and Bridgewater Lakes - take time to explore some of the most pristinely beautiful and private beaches in the state and if you have a surfboard paddle out and catch a few sets (Portland has some of Australia's most highly regarded breaks).
Alternatively access some of the most inspiring walks along the cliffs at Cape Nelson Lighthouse or through the mystical greenery of the enchanted forest. Out on the other side of the bay at Cape Bridgewater drive through wind farms to explore unique petrified forests, blowholes and walk or take a boat tour to the land based Australian Fur Seal colony.
Coffee, great food and wine and entertainment can be found at cafes on both of these capes so reward yourself after your exploration.
For the fishermenwhat can we say - it is only 4 minutes drive to the ramps and if your family are along rest assured they will be happy and comfortable while you are gone.
And as we encourage our guests to get out and explore Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Nelson and Mount Gambier are all under 1 hours drive so make great day trip destinations.

We loved this cosy cottage. Being dog friendly made it even better. The property is well maintained, spacious, beautifully decorated and the hosts have made it feel charming, warm and comfortable. We'll come back!

Beautiful cottage and comfortably and tastefully furnished. Great to be able to have my dogs there with a secure yard. Good location and koalas around. Communication with the owner was good until I asked about the dodgy shower with fluctuating water temperature that almost made it impossible to have a safe shower, certainly not an enjoyable one. All I got there was 'I hope you worked it out' - the other surprise was the fee in USD rather than AUD. Nice enough stay but not enough to want to go back.

What a lovely cottage. The photos do not do it justice. Very cosy and well set up. Comfortable bed. Used the outdoor fire pit. We did walk the coastal route into town but it is a fair walk.

This property contains so much history and has an amazing ambiance. The kitchen is adorable and makes meals intimate. The mudroom is a great place to sit and view the garden and the outdoor area is suitably fenced for dogs. Our fur babies had a ball! The lounge is comfy and the TV has all the extras. A perfect getaway. Thank you, Felicity and John.

It was so lovely to be in a nice and quite place, really enjoyed the view. Thank you so much Felicity and Richard. I should specially thank Richard for taking time to post my daughter's bunny which she left at your place. I recommend this place for beautiful families.

A home away from home! The bedroom and lounge were both super cosy and warm and I had a very relaxing stay. Really loved all the furniture and soft furnishings, gave me some inspiration to apply in my own house!

This quaint cottage provided us with warm, comfortable accommodation in an authentic colonial building. The history of the Barleycorn Inn makes an interesting adjunct to a visit to Portland. Our dog enjoyed the fully fenced yard and spent time exploring and play around the cottage. The town of Portland and surrounding areas is quite picturesque but we were restricted in visiting the best sites as most are national parks that don't allow dogs.

Was so pleased I booked the Barleycorn inn when looking for somewhere to stay for me and my dog on a short trip away.
There were some issues with stayz updating the check in information, but one message to Felicity and she got back to me so quickly with all the information I needed.
The cottage was beautifully clean and very comfortable with everything needed for our stay - just as well as the weather disappointed us, but we enjoyed the extra time in the cottage. Great location just a minute or two walk to the bay, close to the town and easy drive to some of the other towns nearby.
I really loved the additional touch of putting information on pet friendly locations in the local area in the welcome pack - as a result my dog and I explored a couple of extra places we hadn't thought of before.
Would definitely book again if I'm staying in the area.

Overall house was lovely
Just a few small things that we noticed could be improved
1 more toilet roll as half a roll left for 4 adults
2 sink in bathroom loose
Bath needs resurfaced as chips of paint came off on body
3 glasses were dirty had to be washed before use as well plates
4 chairs outside were flithy unable to sit on them
Other than that enjoyed the house

It may not be fair to review as it’s soon to be renovated but in the meantime, it’s a little smelly and may not be as clean as travellers would expect. The shower temperature was erratic and the kitchen plumbing was noisy.
The apple trees are fun and the outside laundry is clean and quaint.

This cottage was clean and cosy had everything we needed, it was cold and the heating was good.
Was unsure about the oven door having an Ocky strap on it to keep it in place , this didn’t really work and it is a gas stove, I didn’t use it wasn’t taking a risk.

The property was lovely, I did think the backyard was bigger than it turned out to be but that was no problem as the weather was horrible. The house was very cosy and comfortable.

Such a charming & character filled cottage - so homey. On a cold & damp weekend Barleycorn Inn heating worked a treat. Bed & doona were super. Garden & cottage show the love & attention from the owners. Would like better lighting, especially in the kitchen but overall one of the most charming places we’ve stayed in and we do short term rentals a lot.

A very comfortable and cozy cottage with easy access in a quiet street. The history of the building was very interesting. It was well stocked with books, games, crockery, cutlery etc as well as tea/coffee/milk etc. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying at Barleycorn Inn.
