About this cabin rental
Please Note: All booking requests require answering these three questions:
1) How is each guest related to or known by the person submitting the booking request for the group?
2) Will any pets be part of the group? (We regret that we are unable to allow pets)
3) Ages and maturity of any children: Are they able to respect and protect the property of others?
"The Ponds at Nantalaha Lake" is a "Unique Retreat" of 3.6 beautifully landscaped acres, strategically located as the hub surrounded by a wheel of incredible attractions and activities. An outdoor deck overlooks the Upper Pond stocked with pet trout, continuously fed by a mountain stream, and complimented by a refreshing fountain for rustic ambiance. Walking to the middle of the property, you can enjoy the breathtaking view of another quarter acre Lower Pond situated with a lovely Smoky Mountain background. Sport fish or simply relax on a few large boulders and muse, read or watch the wildlife.
Even the ponds themselves are unique! Rather than the typical natural pools which are fed primarily by rain water, with little inflow and outflow, here each is continuously fed by running mountain water from above that travels through the series of ponds on its way to Junaluska Creek below. This transforms what elsewhere could be a stagnant water collection into this property's constantly refreshing and self-replenishing ponds. Whether you are eating during the day on the outdoor deck, while watching (or feeding!) the pet trout in the Upper Pond... or experiencing during the evening the spectacular star-filled sky far from city lights and the symphony of frogs at the Lower Pond... or sleeping in the master bedroom with the lanai doors open to enjoy the sound of the babbling creek below... you will likely not forget that this Unique Retreat is appropriately named... "The Ponds"!
Take the kayaks and life vests from the garage to experience the pristine Lake Nantahala with a ten minute drive to the public boat launch. Bring your motorcycles, boat and RV too - you have use of an oversize garage as well as electric and septic hook-ups. After a day of activity, come back to the cabin for a meal cooked on our gas or charcoal grills. Parents relax in the hot tub, children play badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, or croquet, and pets move freely from the outdoor deck to the large, fenced backyard. The entire family can gather at the 'fire-pit' by the stream to enjoy roasting marshmallows, story telling and singing.
Time to come inside? The ground floor great room is a trip into the past: The antique decor includes a kitchen stove that cooked meals for prior generations above its wood fire compartment, and the Coca Cola theme of the kitchenette. The large collection of VHS tapes can be viewed on the big (but far from flat) screen. And many families have found themselves repeating enjoyable evenings at the pool and game tables.
Experience both: the rustic authenticity of a log cabin decorated in keeping with simple mountain life, and the convenience of the home's modern appliances, wifi / internet, satellite TV, and reliable / automatic cutover to backup generator during power outages (not too uncommon when trees fall onto power lines in these here mountains!) It has often been a real retreat for one or two couples, but can easily sleep eight. There is no shortage of rooming options with three floors, each equipped with both sleeping accommodations and its own full bathroom. Master 1 on the first floor is a large bedroom with a queen bed with separate electric controls for each side. This room displays traditional mountain decor and opens to the lanai for the experience of outdoor sleeping, yet in the safety and comfort of the home. It has a cedar closet, desk and chair, and satellite TV, and shares a full bath with the main floor. Master 2 on the second floor provides old world charm in the tradition of a cottage. It too has a full bath and satellite TV, with both a queen and a trundle day bed. In addition to the formal bedrooms, the large entertainment area on the lower level has another trundle day bed and a futon couch that can open to become yet another queen bed. The ground floor kitchenette, full bathroom and private stone deck with a hot tub make it perfect for another independent family arrangement, or for ensuring that your family will also enjoy just hanging out at home!
The gas fireplace and vaulted ceiling make the living room a quaint place for relaxation, watching TV, reading or quiet conversation. The kitchen is equipped with typical modern appliances and some extras for the gourmet cook. "Pass thru" windows allow sending food directly to the small dining room or onto the fully screened lanai, with its large table and deck for eating and entertainment. The large (and unique) antique coffee table in the living room makes overflow seating for meals or activities while relaxing on the leather couches convenient for all. But we'll understand if you decide instead to eat outside under the umbrella at the large deck table, with the Smoky Mountain view stretching before you and the local trout swimming below!
'The Ponds at Nantahala Lake' is mountain-close to all major attractions. We are 10 minutes from pristine Nantahala Lake, and within 20-30 minutes of the Nantahala Gorge and Outdoor Center, with other lakes (Santeetlah, Fontana, Chatuga), towns (Andrews, Murphy, Franklin, Bryson City) and attractions (Cherohala Skyway, John Campbell Folk Arts School, Tail of the Dragon, Cherokee Indian Village) and much more nearby. The locals say we are 'two hours from Anywhere': Atlanta GA, Ashville NC. Charlotte NC, Knoxville TN, and Gatlinburg TN. We are truly blessed to be in the middle of no-where, yet close to everything that means so much to the people who live here and the guests who visit.
We could enjoy detailing many other reasons why we chose, developed, and look forward to retiring in this Unique Retreat (feel free to ask us about our favorite local hiking trails and other activities)... but we would rather you read the many reviews from guests explaining why they can't wait to return! We heartily invite you to share our lovely home, our community of open and trusting folk, and one of the most beautiful places on the planet!

Had a great stay. Had a brief hiccup at check-in but the homeowner remedied in record time. The house was welcoming and well kept.
Property was also very well maintained. It felt more like visiting friends then a rental.

What a great cabin. Beautiful spot with great views. Lovely to see the swallows and the humming birds. Feeding the pet trout was an extra bonus. Being able to use the garage was really useful to put fishing gear in. Thanks for the information about the fishing. It was really useful and got to do good fishing on the mountain streams. The icing on the cake was the really hot weather.

Such a relaxing home away from the hustle & bustle of our busy lives. The ponds were nice to sit by & watch the fish. Wish we had more time to stay.

My husband and I spent our anniversary here and it was the best vacation we have had in years. The home and property are just so beautiful. I wish I could have stayed forever. The scenery and peacefulness was perfect for a getaway. We loved the view of the mountains from the house and the proximity to town was really nice. The host communicated very well and I really felt that if I needed anything they were just a phone call away. I hope to have a vacation here with my family someday in the future!

View was very pretty from side porch overlooking mountains and small fish pond ( missed the fountain part though ) .Communication with owner was very fast. No phone signals at all from any of our phones but owner reached out to us to let us know that house phone was available to use as well as wifi internet. Those worked well. Basement was nice only thing missing that would have been nice would have been a small fridge. Home was beautiful!! Thanks

Thank you so much, owners of this wonderful house!!!! We had a great time in and out of your house 👍, the pond and many activities are super fun (feeding fish, watching birds, kayaking, etc.). The only one thing we would have missed is dog barking at night behind the house ( we’re worried our kids could get up). But overall it was such a good time for all our family!!!👍

We love staying at this cabin
It is so very rare to find such a large area to play with a pond , stream , fire pit , pool table and everything you need to just stay in .
Clean and comfortable from top to bottom
Wireless was good
There are 27 stairs from the garage to the main floor
But not all together so you can rest 😊
And you can enter through the basement to save a few lol
Teenage kids played all day outside by the pond and explored in the creek
Wonderful way to get them off electronics
Then played pool and lots of games in the evenings

The owners of this property are wonderful and ever so understanding and kind. They even refunded my cleaning fee due to the amount of cleaning I had to do. They were super kind in every way. The parking is a bit too much for us. We are seniors and could not walk the distance from the garage to the front door. We parked out front of the cabin which is alongside of a very busy highway. We were super nervous the entire time. There are no directions that really tell ya what the wifi password is. We actually thought hat we saw was a phone #.The wifi is not that great anyway. The TV has no instructions on how to switch fromTV to DVD player. Owners gave info but that was not correct. I must say this cabin is small , and has a few beams that go from floor to ceiling making it hard to maneuver a walker for a disabled person. We managed and had a great time fishing. My son caught a 10 lb trout on 3 kernels of canned corn. It was awesome.

We enjoyed our time, was a little disappointed the pond was drained. Was looking forward to hearing the fountain. We couldn’t use the grill, I believe a nest had been made in it. All good, we made the best of it. Property was beautiful.

Beautiful Mountain Escape
The home is in a beautiful setting with the trout ponds and a small creek at the back of the property. It is a wonderful get away from it all location. The lake was nice and a short distance away, as was shopping and all amenities that we needed. Communication with the owner was quick and easy. Any issues were handled quickly and efficiently. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is due to the numerous notes and items in the house that were the owners or residents property. I have rented many homes in the past several years and have never encountered notes on cabinets, display items, drawers, doors and random objects in the house. Some of the kitchen cabinets were chained and post-it note marked not to open. There were notes in the bathroom as well, on things and page long instruction on how to clean the spaces after each use. It was just a bit too much for me. I felt as though I was invading someone's privacy and space and was a little uncomfortable. Overall, it is a nice house with all that we needed. Communication was good and we had a nice getaway.

Fun House to enjoy trout fishing and relaxing
Family enjoyed the pet trout pond by feeding the fish and even named one "Bob". Family enjoyed fishing the lower land for catch and release. Endless fun for the family. We have great memories to look back on.

Had a blast getting away up in the mountains. They even had a generator when the power went out for a few hours. This place has everything!

Very tranquil, relaxing location!
Absolutely loved the cabin and it's location. Feeding the trout was so wonderful and fulfilling. Loved catching the trout in the lower pond once we found out what worked, lol. Loved being able to sit in the hot tub and listen to the sounds of nature! It was a very refreshing get away for us. Clean, homey cabin.

Not quite what we were expecting, but it was a great place and a great stay. I would highly recommend. Really enjoyed watching the trout, and the hot tub was a pleasure. Kids enjoyed playing pool! Location was good and much to see and do in the area. Loved the proximity of hiking the AT and other hikes / falls to see etc.

Our family was grieving a loss and needed to get away and spend time together. This proved to be a peaceful retreat where we could rest and play as a family. Thank you to the owners for their hospitality. Everything and more was available to us- they really thought of everything. Such a cozy feel to this home where you can tell many have been welcomed and felt at home. We feel refreshed and hope to come back! Thank you!
