This was our second stay at the Whale Crossing! Our stays were a few years apart. It was as beautiful as we remembered. We were treated to the wonders of the whales breaching time and time again. Its like being on your own island on the island! If you want total relaxation and seclusion, this is your calling card. Linda and Marty are simply the best hosts. We can't thank them enough for our adventures there. This is a must vacation cottage.

Find a quiet part of the island with a view of the ocean, a lovingly created property, nothing too fancy, just quiet and perfect.

First off, this isn’t your classic vacation rental. It is the cutest tiki hut with a separate bathroom building. No AC but not it’s not really necessary with the ocean breeze , ceiling fan and screens all the way around. Beautiful decorated. Owner even provided robes and sleep masks! We loved waking up to the ocean view visible right from the bed. Would stay here again in a heartbeat! Owners dogs were a bonus! They were friendly but not intrusive.

We booked 3 nights here to begin a 3 week vacation in the islands. It was great and we wish we had booked the whole first week here. Sleeping to the nature sounds, deep quiet too and then waking to the expansive view! We were able to exhale from our great but very active lives- to reset. Will come back just for the outdoor shower alone and stars alone. All the reviews are true - oh and thanks for the binoculars too.

My stay here was wonderful and restful with the tropical surroundings and the incredible view of ocean and sunsets! What a perfect setting!

If you want a true island experience - stay here! From the amazing view, to the open floorplan to the outside shower (don't panic, there is an inside one too) - this was a relaxing getaway. You are close to a few small towns that have stores and restaurants, but far enough away to have some solitude. All you needs are covered with supplies, amenities and even lots of beach equipment to use! Linda is an amazing host and very kind. We hope to come back soon!

Like old Hawaii! Beautiful tiki cottage tucked into a tropical paradise with a 360 degree view of the ocean and Maui beyond. We enjoyed the coastal hike (right next to the property) to historical landmarks while we watched whales breaching off the shore. Great proximity to Hawi, etc in the fantastic North Kohala area.
We Loved everything about the place including the sweet and friendly dogs. Linda and Marty were so friendly and perfect hosts. 5 star all the way*****

If you're looking for a real Hawaii experience away from the crowds and tourist areas, A Whale Crossing is for you. The accommodations are a little tight and the kitchen is basic, but it's actually very comfortable. The bath cabana is great and the outside shower was hot. The views from the deck were amazing and just below there's plenty of room to play fetch with the dogs on the extensive lawn area. Linda was a wonderful host. If you love the 4 Seasons or Mani Lani you probably wouldn't be searching VRBO for a unique, out of the way place to stay, so take a chance - you won't be disappointed.

If I was to ever move to Hawaii, Linda’s little place is the type of house I would want. It is scenic, rural, rustic and peaceful. What it is not, is a sterile, spotless hotel. My husband and I have been to the island many times but we wanted to explore the Kohola area. This house was the perfect home base. We enjoyed great hiking, snorkeling, beaching and marine life watching which was all in a few miles. Hawi is a great little village with nice shops and good restaurants. So if you want to have an experience where you live more like a local and experience a more rustic life, please rent this little slice of heaven.

My heart skipped a beat when I pulled up to this place. This is a one of a kind location on the northwest tip of the big island with a view that will take your breath away. If you can handle the rustic, slightly janky cottage (I found it to be perfect) and don't mind visits and very occasional barking from four extremely welcoming dogs then you, like me, will have found a glimpse into paradise. I'll be back. Hopefully many times.

If you need a “reboot” from the frenzy of big city living this is for you. The “challenged” road down to the property is worth the time. Once there it is a view of epic proportions and a very comfortable cottage. Linda and her smiling pack of Goldens are the best!

This adorable cottage is great for a solo or couple adventure. Great view. Small drive to beaches and town. If I ever come back to the big island, I will stay here avain!

Amazing location for whale watching. Linda a wonderful hostess. Cottage charming and rustic.

This property is truly a quiet slice of paradise on the beautiful big island! Marty and Linda are extremely friendly and helpful. It was a welcome change from the busy resorts. The king size bed is very comfy. The kitchen is a bit of a challenge to prep and cook food in, however, it has the basic needs. For whale watching, this property was terrific!

This charming, rustic cottage is EXACTLY the kind of place I like to stay in Hawaii. The spot couldn't be better, isolated on the wild Hawi coast with a view you'll never want to leave. The kitchen is small but perfectly functional. The outdoor shower is divine. Linda is so kind and had lived in this spot with her family for many years. I could easily spend a couple of weeks here.

Beautiful place. We loved the view, the breeze from the coast, and being greeted by the owner's 4 affordable pups every morning. The view is hard to beat. The outdoor shower is the best feature. You've got trees and plants to give you full privacy while still feeling like you're showering out in a natural, open space. Very clean. Only thing is that we wish we had more surface area to put our stuff away, but that's minor bc everything, including all decorations, in the bungalow is charming. Linda is very sweet and responsive while still giving you all the privacy to make you feel like it's just you in your vacation rental. Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful location very helpful host.

Wonderful experience in a spectacular setting. 180 opposite of the resort experiences and that is what makes it great. Private and intimate. Rustic and cozy in the best way. Highly recommend for those who want something different than a traditional hotel.

If we didn't feel so misled, we would be happy to give this five stars. There's a lot to like about this place: gorgeous view of the ocean, amazing starlit night, charming dwelling, quirky and interesting layout and configuration.Ultimately, it feels like you're living in a poorly maintained camper: the power was unreliable, a breaker tripped unexpectedly when we plugged in a coffee grinder. We couldn't find an outlet that worked and when we did, all the power suddenly shut off. We had to force the front door to open. The back door handle was nearly detached and came off the tracks multiple times. The hot water for the bathtub was luke-warm and unusable for a soak. The kitchen was so small that all the utensils were in tupperware and the sink was larger than the counter-space. When we took a shower, we could see into the property-owner's kitchen. All of this would have been fine if this had been properly announced in the description. Basic levels of maintenance are simply not being met.

Aloha! My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time at Whale Crossing! We both live on the island and really wanted a getaway from Kona. We absolutely loved Linda and the doggos, the cottage was very comfortable and had everything that we needed. I had only been to Hawi a handful of times, on the way to Pololu Valley, and we had a great time exploring the area. Mahalo Nui ☀️

You can’t go wrong in a charming boutique Hawaiian bungalow. Nautical flare of old Hawaiiana. Outdoor shower was my favorite. Linda was a gracious hostess. Thank you for allowing us to share in your magical space.Aloha

A whales crossing was perfect for us. It was very small, extremely private, quiet, easy living. The sunset each night became a tradition. I loved the outdoor shower.

Had a great weekend at A Whale Crossing. Rented the smaller beach shack for a friend and me, and was delighted with the accommodations. Great large yard, easy walk to a lava rock shoreline, wonderful outdoor shower and bath house. Would definitely come back again.

Our stay at a whale crossing was an incredible experience. From your lanai you can see plenty of whales spouting and a few jumping even without binocs. In the morrning we were treated to an array of song birds. The dogs are very loving and fun to play with. Linda and Marty are wonderful host. If we ever we are fortunate to visit the big island again we will definitely stay here. Suzy and Trampus Travis. 01/20/2017

My girlfriend and I stayed four days and nights in January 2017 and loved it. The house was clean and had everything we needed. It was great to have the use of the stacking washer and dryer. The bathroom was clean and well appointed, with a nice shower. The kitchen was spacious and clean. Best of all, the view was spectacular. We loved watching whales sounding and could see Maui and Kaho'olawe islands. The Whale Crossing is a mile off the main road, surrounded by ranch land. It was quiet and peaceful. It's only a five minute drive to the center of Hawi and ten minutes to Kapa'au for supplies. Linda was a nice host. She made sure we had everything when we arrived, then she totally respected our privacy over the course of our stay. We would definitely stay here again.

Gazebo and property have a cool maritime theme. Hot water outdoor shower with ocean view is a nice bonus. Super friendly dogs and property owners.

We were very happy with our stay at Linda & Marty's vacation rental. The rental tiki-hut was very cozy, with a comfortable king bed and a full kitchen. It was close to town, yet far enough away that gives one a private, secluded feel. Gorgeous views of the ocean and Maui. Nicely landscaped. Close to a great hiking trail that takes you to a sacred ceremonial sacrificial site and King Kamehameha's birthplace.
We will definately stay again when spending time in north Hawaii.

We really like remoteness of the northwestern area off the Big Island of Hawaii. A Whale Crossing consists of a vacation house, a vacation cottage, and the owner’s home. On over an acre, there is plenty of privacy for all. We stayed in the thatch roofed cottage. Described as “rustic”, on the website, the cottage was wonderful. Kitchen, bathhouse, sitting area, a wonderful deck and some friendly geckos overlook the Maui channel. The bed is probably a king, not a queen. Seeing whales breach from your bed and listening to the waves break on the rocks at night make this location magical. It’s just about ½ mile walk to the waves breaking on the rocky shore. The location is very remote, quiet and peaceful. It provides a great opportunity to explore a part of the Big Island that many people never see. (And if you need wifi, it works great.)
The beauty of the location is surpassed by the hospitality afforded to us by the owners – Marty and Linda. They went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. If you need snorkeling gear, ice, mosquito repellant, a guitar (!), dining / hiking / driving recommendations – anything - they will make it happen.
If you’re looking for a unique experience in a magical place, consider staying at Whale Crossing, You’ll be glad you did!

This was the place we chose for our 20th Anniversary vacation. It did not disappoint. There is no stress here. Only peace and quiet, whale sightings, views and tranquility. We really enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing it with us!

We had the best time at A Whale Crossing! Wonderful views of the Big Water with whale sightings every day as well as unbelievably beautiful sunsets. Our hosts, Linda and Marty, were so very friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and never hesitated to answer questions, share information, or make sure we had what we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage, especially the outdoor shower set among tropical plants. The many birds of all types frequented the trees and plants around us and provided hours of enjoyment. The family Golden Retrievers were super friendly and polite, which allowed us to vicariously love our dogs waiting for us at home. Walks along the water's edge to the Birthplace of King Kamehameha and the Moʻokini Heiau were a wonderful start to a day of relaxation or activities, depending on our mood. We felt completely comfortable staying 'home' all day or heading out to nearby Hawi and Kapa'au to check out the fun shops, galleries, and restaurants, or over to Pololu to hike down to the black sand beach, or west to all the beautiful beaches, or into Waimea, or driving the beautiful Hamakua Coast over to Hilo, or or or... There is so much to do and see within a relatively short distance! Our accommodations suited us perfectly, and we fondly refer to the cottage as our "little grass shack." We were able to leave all our cares and worries behind and relaxed as one can truly do while island living. We can't wait to go back!
