First of all before even getting to the beautiful property itself, I have a give a mention to the hosts of the apartment. They greeted us at the front door, helped us inside. And then proceeded to prepare a welcome gift of local food and drink. Shin went above and beyond any sort of service either of us have received in the past, and helped us some much with what to do across are sadly short stay there. But we managed to pack in such a lot thanks to his help, from places to eat, to attractions across the region. I cannot speak highly enough about him!
Now the apartment! What can I say? This was one of the most unique experiences I've ever had, and it's heritage and transitional background was amazing. For anyone looking to get a unique and transitional experience out of there time in Kyoto I would recommend staying here. If your tall like myself, just watch your head when going from room to room, I managed to bang my head a couple of times haha.

Our stay at Kyonoyado Gekkoan was so much more than we could have ever expected. We were met outside reception and shown our accommodation by the lovely staff. The accommodation itself was spotless and so well done. It exceeded our expecations. We really enjoyed using the hot tub and relaxing in the peace and quiet. We also chose to do dinner through the hotel and that was nothing short of excellent. Every dish was beautifully prepared and delicious.
Absolutely nothing.

This was by far the most exceptional experience we had during our time in Japan. Shin and his team did an amazing job meeting us, providing lots of information for the area, provided daily sweats and tea. The property was just beautiful, lots attention to details, flowers, lovely tea cups and linens. We had the traditional Japanese breakfast every morning, beautifully presented and delicious; my husband and I enjoyed every dish! (maybe too much :)) It was are real honor to stay such a well restored machiya traditional ryokan - it was indulgent with all the space and style! Location was great - we found it easy to get around and the subway is a quick walk. (we stayed in the east garden suite)

Fantastic stay, impeccable and truly special place.
And Shin - who made a huge difference to our overall stay in Kyoto.

This place was exceptional. It is 130 years old, modernized inside, very traditionally Japanese. Parts of the three room townhouse had painted flowers from a very famous artist from Kyoto. The private Zen garden in the back was gorgeous. Shin and his staff were exceptional. So incredibly kind. we opted for the dinner and Sake in our room. It was amazing and worth the price. The breakfast served the next morning was delicious. I would highly recommend this historical gem.
understated outside and then you walk into paradise!

Beautiful interiors, delicious food, and incredible hospitality - this was hands down the best accommodation of our entire trip in Japan. Every detail is carefully thought through and the hosts are very attentive and helpful. Highly recommend!

Staying at Kyonoyado Gekkoan is one of the few most amazing experiences in my travelling history. The professional and friendly services provided by Shohei and Shin are exceptional and really touching. Love every bit of the decoration of the house, beautiful blending of the Japanese traditional culture and advanced technology. Shohei is so thoughtful on our needs and knowledgeable about Kyoto. Will definitely recommend to anyone who visits Kyoto.
Nothing to complain about. Everything was perfect.

the bath and garden was amazing. But the staff, they were probably the best thing about the stay. better than the bath or the garden.
the slidding doors were a bit hard to open/close.

Staff was very helpful especially its general manager who was very kind in introducing the history of the hotel accommodation (which was built over 130 years ago), its facilities and supplies provided. He has also introduced places in kyoto that one shouldn't miss and lots more! Will recommend friends who will come to kyoto to stay in this hotel.
Hotel is outside downtown and needs to spend extra time in traveling to and from sightseeing spots. However, as it is not in downtown, it's quiet n offers great environment for visitors who need to have a break from busy life.

The entire experience was great. Shin the person is charged is very service orientated and took care of every thing. The entire property is very clean and everything is provided even facial mask every night. Shin prepared welcome snacks and drinks when we arrived. Shin also prepared snacks and tea every night for us to wind down. It is especially welcome when you are cold and tired after a long day. Even a 6 star hotel can't compared with this property. Please go and experience it yourself. I am sure you will love it.

The property is very well renovated, showing visitors the Japanese culture and tradition. The room is clean and tidy. I love that they prepared mid-night snacks pairing with tea each night.
They have super friendly staff as well, help you to plan your trips in Kyoto and give food recommendation!

I don’t usually leave much reviews but I felt like I needed to because they deserved it. First of all, let’s talk about the hospitality of the team, especially Mr. Shin, since the beginning after we have confirmed our booking, he messaged us to thank us and liaised with us throughout prior to our arrival. his warm hospitality has made us felt so excited to be there and when we are there, he made us felt so loved, so welcomed, so warmth. he and his team really spoilt us by going extra miles meeting all our request and also offered extra stuff that we didn’t ask for such as heat packs worrying that we would be cold. he kindly explained about the property and recommended nearby attractions. long story short, he is the reason that if we could rate this property 100/10, we would.
as of property, it’s clean, it’s beautiful, it’s comfortable. the amenities provided is more than the basics, we felt so spoilt with the range of stuff they provided.
we opted for the half board which food was great especially the kaiseki dinner, wide variety and all tasted so good.
throughout our Japan trip, we stayed in 4 different hotels and this place has surely given us the best impression. when we come back to visit again next time, we will definitely choose here again!
train station is just a close 5 mins walk so it’s convenient. the location is nested in a neighbourhood area so it’s quiet.
we would recommend our friends and family to try this place, you’ll not regret it!
the breakfast option can be quite limited as they only have western breakfast (sandwich and salad) or Japanese breakfast (tofu vegan set), but it wasn’t a big issue for us. the food is nice.

The staff was very accommodating of our very late check-in time, and still gave us an in-depth orientation of the facility when we arrived.
Everything was great!

Everything. The location is so quiet yet not far from metro. The facilities in the house is top notch, the garden is beautiful and you can enjoy the view when taking bath. Hosts are so professional and passionate with excellent services. Will recommend to all of my friends who want to visit Kyoto.

Although we only spent one night here, our experience was just way above our expectations - we thought we were in a 5 star luxury house! Mr. Shinji Nishiyama is such an asset to the company, him and his colleagues were super polite and accommodating, waited for us and provided us with lots of information about the property, Kyoto, restaurants, things to do, and onsen! Everything was perfect and the property is so beautiful and fully equipped - even the amenities were amazing! We'll definitely come back, but next time we'll definitely stay longer! Thank you to Shin and his colleagues! :)

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Gekkou-an very much. It was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan travel. Shin and the staff were incredibly sweet, friendly, and helpful with everything. The check-in process was smooth and very welcoming. Shin helped us make reservations and recommended so many good restaurants and sightseeing spots. The facilities are especially top-notch. We love the heated tatami mats, the open-air bath, the pretty moss garden, the night time tea, the delicious snacks that came with it, and so many other things. We couldn’t possibly list out all the best parts of our stay there. But if we have to pick one thing what made our experience here extraordinary, it would have to be the people, especially Shin. My husband and I have stayed at many places during our travels both back in the US and abroad, and none of them has come even close to the comfort we felt at Kyonoyado Gekkou-an as well as the hospitality of Shin and the staff. We strongly recommend everyone to stay here and experience for yourself a once-in-a-life time experience at this pretty Kyo-Machiya. It will most definitely make your Kyoto trip unforgettable.
We love everything there.
