There were some good points, including the warm welcome, your truly fabulous and long-suffering staff and the ample breakfast.
Nice position
Comfy bed
Well serviced
Delicious breakfast
We only received the email about the refurbishment on the morning of our arrival when it was too late to cancel and rebook elsewhere. This communication glossed lightly over the extent of the disruption caused by renovation works and no mention was made of the fact that the bar and cafe were closed. This had been a key deciding factor when making our booking and we were very disappointed.
On arrival after a long journey from the south west we were allocated a room that I would hesitate to put a dog in. A small double was crammed into an alcove of this rather mucky, dingy and murky room which would have necessitated us launching ourselves onto it from the end. There was a view over the back cut and pigeons nesting on a pile of bird excrement.
Luckily, the excellent staff member reallocated us to a room which was far more suitable, although we did have a couple of conversations with the scaffolders who reached our level in day 2 of our stay.
This room was spacious and comfortable if rather run down, but lacked power points, so we had to keep on juggling with a hard to reach plug socket to charge our phones.
The window blinds were filthy and did not work properly. The curtain was for show and could not be closed.
The bathroom worked after a fashion, but the shower delivered only a slow trickle of hot water.
I cannot understand how this hotel has the temerity to list itself as a 4 or 5 star hotel. What we experienced was more akin to a run-down seaside boarding house that needed a lot of tlc.

Breakfast, nice; hot English breakfast available, cereals, juice etc. Staff super friendly and helpful. Rooms spacious. Normally good sea view.
Rooms desperately need renovation. Beds disgusting, with old creaky springs and dip in the middle. Bathrooms adequate but again could do with updating. Renovation on the front was underway in our stay but didn't realise how bad it would be. Scaffolding and plastic sheeting completely blocked our view and very noisy. Rooms should not have been let under the circumstances but had nowhere else to go.

Amazing seaveiw, fab for people, bird, boat & crazy swimmer watching.
To awaken & the room to be flooded orange with the dawning of the sun.
Friendly & hard working staff.
Best breakfast with good quality ingredients, the bacon is lush. All served in a fresh, modern dining room.
Always hot water in shower.
We have stayed several times & will stay again.
The hotel is undergoing extensive renovation, but we were not disturbed by any noise during our stay.
Some things do need updating: the bed in our room had seen better days, the huge pub style toilet roll holder needs removing as it gets in the way & isn't in use.
I suppose this will all be sorted in the renovations.
More towel rails, hooks & coathangers please.

It had everything I needed and I was only staying for 1 night, so it did the job
Toilet wasn’t fully clean on arrival, a few droplets of urine on the toilet seat, this was easy to clean, but again it didn’t bother me too much as I wasn’t staying long

Marie was so helpful and when I could not upload my work she helped me get a better signal. All the staff are polite and nothing was too much trouble. Even when my sink got blocked it was sorted that day and the wayward spoon removed. My bags were carried to my room and the room was serviced every day.
The building is a little on the old side so the floorboards creak bu other then that it amazing.

The breakfast buffet was very good, and the staff were friendly. The room was a decent size, even though is was quite basic.
The hotel is not in very good order. Some of the windows on the front of the hotel were boarded up, there was plastic sheeting on the carpet on the stairs and there was a funny smell in the corridors. The carpet in my room wasn't in a good state. There was no net curtains on my window and the view was of a wall just opposite. I was woken up at 5.45am by staff talking loudly in the restaurant area below me. There were no parking spaces available in the afternoon.

Good location, breakfast was lovely and staff very welcoming. Hotel is undergoing some much needed refurbishment, which has made it so much nicer.
Everything was fine.

The Royal is a traditional, civilised hotel, and it seems to attract guests who are the same way because there were no problems with noise at all.The price I paid was very good for a bank holiday weekend, especially as a generous breakfast is included. (I was impressed that they had gluten-free toast.) My room was a decent size for a single room and had proper wooden furniture. The location is great, right on the seafront and only a short walk from everything. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Oh, and the shower worked perfectly, something I no longer take for granted in hotels.
The lighting in the room could be better. I really appreciated having a table and a chair but it was hard to use the table as a desk because it was so gloomy in that corner of the room.

I loved everything about it. My wife and I spent our wedding night there 2 years ago. So every annivetsary we make a tradition of staying at this beautiful hotel. The staff are amazing and polite, and completely understanding. They're all also very helpful in the way they do things. I've never once had a problem staying here, and the breakfast is lovely.
No fried eggs at breakfast, but on the bright side there is scrambled eggs, so can't complain.

Fantastic view in the King room we booked room 4, comfortable hotel, nice and friendly staff
This hotel would benefit from a bar and restaurant in my opinion. Also, a mini fridge in the rooms would be an advantage as I had to buy ice to store medication.

location and view
could have offered a specific cooked breakfast other than what was on hot plate. Tired building and no bar , appeared to be renovated?

very short walk to the main drag. very friendly staff that took time to talk to you. There was a very good selection of items for Breakfast.
The bottom bed sheet that covered the mattress had staining around the edges and the duvet underside when you flipped it over had what looked like dried paint. The Breakfast was fairly cold on two out of the 3 days The Hash browns where soft not crispy where they where piled on top of each other the same with the black puddings and they was no offer of other type of eggs scrambled only. The shower was not very powerful and had trouble keeping the temperature going hot then cold.

Booked suite facing sea..excellent but bathroom unheated and only one small towel rail....hence nowhere to dry towels after shower.
Breakfast good but "standard" bacon, sausage, beans mushrooms etc and scrambled egg
Inability to provide poached egg. No "prunes/nuts" etc. No yoghurt.
Dining room/bar not available due to refurbishing
