About this house rental
The house was built in 1998 on historic estate land where the owner's family have lived since the 1890's. The owner was born and brought up on the island but since then has lived mainly in the UK , returning regularly to see family and finally building their own home to enjoy with friends and subsequent generations. It is suitable for either a group of friends, one large family, or two families to holiday together, due to the self-contained facilities downstairs.
*4 wheel drive car is essential * since the road is steep and a bit bumpy, as is typical of roads in Dominica! Toyota RAV4 / Suzuki Vitara (4/5 people) Pajero (6/7 people) are suitable. https://dominicacarrentals.com/ The house is stone, and has wooden floors, high ceilings and wide verandas and is designed traditionally to take advantage of the Caribbean breeze and the ocean and mountain views. It has classical Caribbean wooden shutters and doors and a conventional red galvanized roof (with solar hot water). Upstairs it has 2 double bedrooms one with a 5ft wide four poster mahogany bed the other bedroom with two single beds. Each bedroom upstairs has a bathroom. There is a large tiled veranda on two sides, open plan sitting room, dining room and kitchen, and a garage. Downstairs there is another kitchen, double bedroom with two single beds, bathroom, sitting room and a garage. It is within a 15 minute drive of the town of Roseau and has easy access to diving and sightseeing. The house is surrounded by a garden, is cool and secluded and has a fabulous view of the Caribbean Sea, the town of Roseau in the distance, and a view of Morne Anglais at the back. So, once you sink into a chair on the veranda you may never want to leave!
It is very private, though the local Manageress, Valarie Olive is only a five minute walk down the hill. Please contact her with questions not covered on the website. The cleaning is done by helper Valarie and gardening by helper Alan.
There are supermarkets in both Loubiere, at the bottom of the hill, and in Roseau, which also has a local fruit and vegetable market which is worth a visit particularly on Saturday morning though it is open every day except Sunday. There is a hospital in Roseau, and doctors and dentists if needed. There are banks in Roseau, the local currency being Eastern Caribbean dollars, though U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere and it is easy to change £ sterling into the local currency if wished.
It is possible to travel to the island either by air from various islands or by ferry from Martinique or Guadeloupe, two French islands on either side of Dominica. Overnight visits to those islands and other French islands nearby are easy from Roseau on the ferry.
There is much information about the island on the internet, a good site being https://www.discoverdominica.com. It is in the Windward group of islands and is the least developed. English is the main language though many people speak a French patois. It is very mountainous with the highest mountain is just under 5,000ft. The island is famous for its walking trails and some of them are strenuous such as the hike to the Boiling Lake for which a guide from the Botanical Gardens may be booked if wished. There is also good walking on the Waitukubuli National Trail, Waitukubuli being the old name for Dominica meaning "tall is her body". The house is well placed for such expeditions and very good diving is available nearby and also whale watching. Dominica is the only country in the world where sperm whales reside all the year long though sightings are most likely between November and March.
175 species of birds have been recorded on the island and there are two endemic species of parrot. The larger is the Amazona Imperialis (local name: Sisserou) and the smaller Amazona Aurausiaca (local name Jacko). All birds were affected by the hurricane , but they are recovering and returning to gardens. It is possible to see hummingbirds, hawks and several smaller birds such as bananaquits and local sparrows from the veranda. Our local wren, a characterful bird known as a "rossignol" often makes a nest on the veranda rafters and has a beautiful song.
The island, like many in the Caribbean, is now largely recovered from hurricane damage. It has been truly amazing to see the resilience of people who suffered so badly and have worked hard to put the island back on its feet. Nature is also repairing itself and the island is green once more. The house was damaged in Hurricane Maria, which hit the island in 2017, but has undergone extensive repairs and redecoration and is now in first class condition.
The owners insurance policy does not cover loss of visitors' possessions, so visitors must obtain their own cover. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the property.
Finally please bear in mind that the island is not sophisticated, but therein to the owner lies its charm!

A rustic retreat high on a hillside. The Subaru we rented certainly got a workout climbing the hill! The veranda was a fantastic place to spend time. We watched hummingbirds at the shrubs, bullfinches at their nest, busy-body house wrens, and agoutis! There are 2 huge carambola trees in the yard, the fresh starfruit were amazing. Well placed to get to Roseau for shopping, dining, and diving (Ft Young). Champagne Beach is the closest and that was also an experience!
We struggled a bit with the bugs and not having fans on still nights.

I stayed three plus weeks to take advantage of the many hiking trails throughout the island.
The house was most comfortable and a great place to return to at the end of each day's hike/trek.
As the temperature remained in the mid-80's C throughout my stay, it often became humid in the afternoon's - especially with minimal breeze.
Still, the veranda was a great place to enjoy an end of day cocktail after a hard day's hike.

Truly as the name states, secluded house. Nature is everywhere from hummingbirds, to agouti, to bats, and lizards of many kinds. The walk up or down the hill takes between 15-20 minutes. There is a grocery store at the bottom of the hill and a small walk. Valarie was ever helpful.

The property has wonderful views of the ocean, mountainside, and Roseau. It is conveniently located 10-15 minutes from Roseau, but extremely secluded and private being up a small mountain road. The property manager, Valerie, is very attentive and communicates effectively. The home is spacious and the accomodations are suitable, however there is no air conditioning. This was not an issue for me, but my wife was uncomfortable when the breeze died down. My one criticism is that the home should be outfitted with ceiling fans in all rooms. While the home is designed for maximum air flow, it is hard to understand why a ceiling fan was not installed in the main living area/kitchen. We were provided with only one oscillating fan. Overall, we greatly enjoyed our stay and I rate it as 4 out of 5 stars.

This was such a lovely property with so many birds and beautiful landscaping. We had an amazing view of the water from the fantastic deck that had many seating options. The interior was also very tasteful.
Be warned...there is no glass or screens in the windows. But, there weren't many bugs, so keeping the shutters open was just fine. We did have a bird fly in the house and had some trouble getting him out. The beds all have netting.
Val was amazing; extremely helpful and communicative.
Also, as everyone else will mention, the 'road' in is not for the faint of heart. I was white-knuckled every single time. We only met another car once, but that was quite an ordeal to get past one another. But, it's not that different than lots of other roads in Dominica. So, if you're comfortable driving there, then this should not be a problem. If you're trying to decide if you can handle it...it's steep (very) and there are no places to pass, so if you meet someone, one of you will have to back up to a driveway.

This is our third time staying at this property. We continue to return because it is so relaxing. The road to the house definitely takes some getting used to and you will need a four wheel drive vehicle. The location is close to Roseau and other areas that guests might like to visit. The view of Roseau and the Caribbean Sea is amazing. The sounds of nature from the porch are incredibly soothing. Valarie, the host manager, is very responsive and helpful with any needs or advice. We were sad to leave after almost five weeks. Hope to be back again in the future. Please don't hesitate to book this as a vacation spot.

The house and grounds were spectacular. Everything we could need was provided including kitchen utensils, puzzles and beach towels. The view from the spacious terrace was wonderful and there were rainbows almost every day. We ate all meals out on the terrace to the sounds of bird songs. The only drawback was the difficult road in. Very rutted, narrow with deep rain channels on both sides. But with a 4WD vehicle we made it and even became good at negotiating it. Thank you

We spent a week in this lovely house. After our daily adventures hiking, snorkeling and driving:), we looked forward to relaxing on the veranda soaking in the view and the peaceful beauty. The house is spacious, clean, very pleasant inside with gorgeous grounds. Madeleine was lovely and very helpful, as her family has such a long history with the island and she was a valued source of information and recommendations. What other reviewers say about the “road” up to the property is real - it is doable with 4wd, but takes some getting used to. As long as you are comfortable negotiating a challenging road/driveway, do not hesitate to book - we would return in a heartbeat.

Large and comfortable family house with nice atmosphere. Alone on the hill in a tropical garden with great view. Well equiped, lots of books and guides about Dominica...
It was perfect with kids, we felt like home !
Location is great too, 20 minutes ride to reach the Roseau valley (Trafalgar falls, Titou Gorge, freshwater lake etc.).
A great place to stay

Our stay was fantastic, we very much loved the peace and quiet. The drive up is a bit challenging but doable with a 4WD definitely worth the view as well as the tranquility of this place. We enjoyed sitting on the expansive veranda drinking coffee looking at the ocean and listening to the birds. The place was clean and had everything we needed. Dominica is a beautiful island, there is so much to explore and see. We will be back!

This was our second time staying at this wonderful home in Dominica. It is close to everything (hikes, snorkeling, scuba diving, groceries, restaurants). The house is simply furnished but has everything you would need. The view from the porch is fantastic and it doesn't take long to relax. The host, Madeleine, was very helpful and responded quickly to any questions. We hope to come back again in the future. I can't think of any other place I would rather stay! Thank you Madeleine.

House is clean, spacious, breezy. Has it's own yard, which is like a garden with beautiful plants. Amazing view. Great wifi. No mosquitos here! Driveway is rough, you need an SUV!

Great views over Roseau
Had a wonderful time for our week’s stay. Lovely big property with lots of shared space and absolutely stunning views. Very handy for Roseau, Boiling Lake, Trafalgar Falls, Woven Watten and Soufriere.
Though daunting at first, we soon became used to the drive up. While not modern, the house has everything you need, is very spacious and is great value. We felt very at home.
We would love to come back.

Perfect vacation or work away from home property. Awesome views overlooking Roseau, while minutes away from many of the island attractions.

An absolutely breathtaking house in a lush tropical location
I've traveled to more than 40 countries and this house may be the best one I've ever rented.
The views from the front porch are among the best on the island and the house and property are immaculately maintained. Liz, the property manager, lives right down the road, so she was easily reachable via WhatsApp throughout our stay.
The road getting to the house is no joke--it's unpaved, steep, and extremely bumpy. But if you have a 4WD vehicle, it's manageable and the view from the end of the road (where the house is) makes it well worth the challenge.
Dominica is a gorgeous island blessed with many natural wonders. But especially after the hurricane in 2017, many of the island's physical structures and accommodations appear to be in rough shape. This house was also damaged in the hurricane, but the owners swiftly and thoughtfully returned it to its former glory, making it a shining gem on an island still very much in recovery mode.
Our family cherished the two weeks we spent in Loubiere and strongly encourage others to visit as well. You will not regret it.

This place was fabulous!
My husband and I, recently retired, stayed here for two months (Jan/Feb 2022). We had such a relaxing time. It's the type of house where you feel like you are living outside with all of the comforts of living inside. The yard is private and spacious with star fruit trees and other ornamentals. Our host, Liz, helped us quickly with any issue that came up and gave us great advice on places to shop, hike, and scuba dive. The location is perfect for getting to Roseau or Soufriere and many of the hiking areas on the west coast. The drive up to the house is challenging but we got used to it pretty quickly. You definitely need a 4W drive vehicle. We were sad to leave this absolutely gorgeous island and this house. Hope to come back next year!

Idyllic
The access road is a small challenge but once you arrive at the property it’s well worth it - the high ceilings, the sodden floor, the expansive wrap around verandah, the spectacular view of the ocean, the birds, the brisk winds - a haven.
Liz, the manager, is always accessible and would go way above expectations.
A totally enjoyable and rejuvenating experience, even though we were visiting for work. A great place to come home to.

great work from home location
Visited the Island for work, and could not have picked a better spot. This location was close to town for anything I may need, and the view from the back porch while "working from home" was fantastic. I never had a problem with anything, but if I did Liz was always around to help. Thanks for a great time on the Island.

Great spot close to town
Great location to hang your hat, sit back and relax after a day of work or exploring the island. I have been here almost 4 weeks and could not have picked a better location. The host Liz has been amazing from the start. She has helped with everything needed at the house, to recommendations in town, as well as things to explore on the island.

Stunning.
We had an incredible stay at this beautiful property that was unfortunately marred by 4-5 days/nights where we had no water due to plumbing issues. These issues have been resolved so future guests should not worry about this. Elizabether the owner and Liz the property manager were a pleasure to deal with. We would have appreciated a few additional nights FOC due to te fact that we had no toilet/shower/sink etc for 4 or 5 nights spread across mutlipe different occasions with workmen interrupting our privacy however we were not interested in sullying our stay with any disagreements. Overall this is an absolutely lovely property with breathtaking views and total privacy. We simply did not want to leave!
