About this house rental
Nestled in charming and historic Galena this beautiful home was built in 1842 by brewer Peter Specht from Bavaria. The cellar operated as his brewery and tavern while living in the home above. The house was extensively renovated in 2008. It remains full of character and charm, but now boasts an abundance of modern comforts. A quiet private patio and yard are the perfect spot for a morning coffee or a glass of wine. All within a few walkable blocks to Main Street, the heart of Galena!
This spacious home was built 19 years before the Civil War! Photographs of the house are in the Library of Congress in Washington DC and it has been awarded the prestigious Jo Mead Historic Preservation Award.
Begin by noticing the hitching post and large stone placed by the front door to assist those when exiting their carriage. The off- street parking leads to the current garage that is locked, but you can peek in the windows to see this historic structure. This space was once the summer kitchen, built to avoid overheating the home, and still has the fireplace, bread warming oven, and 1847 date etched into the wall.
As you enter the back door to the house you will find a patio complete with comfortable furniture, fire feature, gas grill, and glowing party lights. There is also a shaded grassy back yard which deer visit year round.
The previous tavern, which is now the cellar, has natural light, hot water heated floors, a dry bar, an electric fireplace, shuffleboard table, and seating area perfect to play a game and share an icy beer as Peter Specht intended.
You will find the original woodwork, wood floors, and stairway in the 2400 square foot home. The wide Southern Pine floors are over 175 years old and remain gorgeous. There is a dining room, living room with gas fireplace, modern kitchen with island, walk in pantry and eat-in seating. The kitchen is fully equipped including a coffee pot as well as a Kuerig. The laundry room, and half bath are on the first floor as well.
The three bedrooms have large comfortable beds. The master has a king bed, bathroom with marble counter top, heated towel rack, walk in closet, and massage therapy shower. The second bedroom also has a king bed. The third bedroom has a queen bed and its own gas fireplace, and a beautifully detailed ceiling. A full bath which includes a shower and tub is also on this floor directly across the hall from the two bedrooms.
Central air, hot water heated floors, free Wi Fi, and access to Netflix all will make your stay more comfortable. Take a few moments to look at the wall of photographs that line the hallway. These provide many ideas of experiences to have, places to visit, and areas to dine or enjoy a beverage or cocktail while in Galena.
Our home is located in a historic, peaceful neighborhood with an abundance of trees and nature. It is directly off of highway 20. Luckily most eating, dining, music, shopping, and activities are just a few blocks away making this the perfect spot for your stay!

We loved this house. It’s renovated very well but has the charm and history throughout. Very close walk to everything you need downtown! If you stay here we suggest making a drive to the Galena Cellars Vineyard too!

Everything about the 1842 Bavarian House was lovely. The location was great.

This place was an awesome place to stay.
Very clean, easy-peasy check-in.
The managers were wonderful to work with as we had a last minute emergency that resulted in
2 of our 3 attending.
We would definitely book there again.

We stayed here for our honeymoon and it was just what we needed after the craziness of the wedding! The house was beautiful, clean, and easily walkable to Main St. (as long as you're not afraid of getting your steps in!!) We had an incredible time and hope to be able to visit again.

The house is well located and beautifully updated while maintaining all the historic charm. We had one minor glitch on arrival that was quickly and satisfactorily resolved by the host. We would definitely stay here again.

This is the most beautiful home! It has everything you could ever need. It has so much character and history. It has been fully updated. We enjoyed just spending time here and relaxing inside and outside on the patio. One of the best rentals we have ever visited. We enjoyed the special artwork too. Thank you Angela and Mike!

We absolutely love staying at the Bavarian Brew House. My kids enjoyed the basement activities, and it is so much better than staying in a hotel. One day it rained, and it was nice to have a house to go back to and hang out. We played games at night in the dining room and the amenities were great. It was also a great neighborhood to take my morning walks.

We absolutely loved our stay at the brew house! The owners, Mike and Angela were very friendly, responsive and great to work with. The house is super clean and decorated so nicely. You can tell a lot of thought went into the details including the heated towel rack and the shower in the master bedroom had 3 different shower heads!
Check in was easy and there was a lot of useful info about the property, including the history and pertinent contact info including WiFi passwords.
The basement was awesome! Complete with shuffleboard and fire place. The property is close enough to walk to town, but there are some big hills getting there and back!
The one thing I would add would be a chair in each of the front bedrooms since the bed is too high to sit on to put on a pair of socks! Other than that, the home was perfect and we really enjoyed our stay! Thank you Mike and Angela!

Spent a long weekend with my adult daughters to celebrate one of their birthdays. This home is beautifully decorated. The beds were very comfortable and the location was perfect for us. It was a lot of fun to walk downtown. The car stayed in the driveway all weekend. Galena is such a fun town.

A beautiful home exquisitely and tastefully renovated. Easy walk to town. Just a warning for those (possibly) in the 70+ age range as we are… The stairs are a little steep and can be a minor challenge. But we’ll worth the climb!

The Home was WONDERFUL .Well appointed. Historical in nature. Well kept.Clean . Stocked.
Fun Basement surprise . Don’t want to give the surprise away.
3 Roomy bedrooms . Loved everything about it. Would stay again and again.
One small note on parking . Parking for only 2 vehicles . If you had 3 you could park on the street.

We stayed at this beautiful home for a friend's reunion and the house was very clean and lovely. There was sidewalk construction right outside the front windows, but nothing the owners had control of. Very convenient location. We were close to downtown but choose to drive due to the hills. The beds were comfortable. All bedrooms are up, so pack light. The kitchen had everything we needed and plenty of paper goods to get up thru. I would definitely come back to this house when visiting Galena again.

The House is beautiful! It's very well equipped and clean. Has everything you need, and looked like the pictures. The bed very comfortable in the master bedroom.
The only complaint was the street directly in front of the house was completely torn up, including the sidewalk. We couldn't use the driveway, and heavy construction started at 7am each morning. Tge Owner did not notify us about this.

Wonderfully restored historic home, but with modern comfort! You are surrounded by the rich local history with historical architecture and furnishings, but yet you feel comfortable enough to sit on the furniture, safely turn on lights, and take a shower with sufficient water pressure! Definitely best of old and new!

I booked this house for a girls' getaway/50th birthday celebration and it was perfect. The beds were incredibly comfy. The whole house is beautifully decorated, has a full modern kitchen and laundry facilities, and is within walking distance of all of the action. And you have to check out the cellar! There's so much history in this house. Definitely a place I'd book again.

This is a wonderful property that has been updated very nicely such that you have the beauty of a historic home, while also having modern bathrooms and kitchen for your comfort and convenience.
We really enjoyed this home, its location (close to downtown) and the owners were very responsive and nice! The beds were very comfortable, and the layout of the home makes it feel bigger than the 2400 sq ft would suggest.
If you are going to Galena, I strongly recommend you consider staying here!

My sister, niece, daughter, and I enjoyed a very relaxing weekend in Galena and our stay at the Brew House. The beds were very comfortable and the home appointed extremely well. The only challenge was the road construction out in front of the home but the owners communicated ahead to warn us of the inconvenience. Highly recommend this property.

The house is beautiful and has a great history. I highly recommend it and hope to return in the future. My only request would be that somewhere in the home description, it is stated that construction is taking place on Highway 20/Spring Street. It's only fair for guests to be aware, PRIOR to booking, of what they may be experiencing upon arrival.
Cons:
* House was not clean upon arrival. We had to clean, do laundry, and make beds.
* Heavy construction was taking place in front of home and throughout town. It "may" be done in front of home but if not, expect early wake up, minor delays & no access to the driveway. Construction WILL continue on the main highway just two houses down from VRBO.
PROS:
*Mistakes happen, it's how they're handled that matters and our issues were resolved quickly, politely, and very effectively. Halie is outstanding and through her actions to resolve the housekeeping issue, I was able to see the home with brand new eyes. LOVED this house!!
* Hosts were traveling but were very quick to respond to our concerns upon their return. They repeatedly expressed their apologies for the frustration experienced with both the housekeeping issue and construction. They were quite generous and sincere in their efforts to turn this situation around. I appreciate and thank them for all they did to make things right. They earned the Premiere Host status.
* The cons created a bad impression at the outset, and we considered leaving early. I'M GLAD WE DIDN'T!

This historical house is beautiful, has everything you would need for a great stay in Galena. The house is well stocked, beds super comfortable, everything just as described. The patio area was our favorite, so nice to relax in the evening with the fire pit table. The basement tavern area was really interesting, too. Couldn't have asked for a nicer place for our girls' trip to Galena.

My 2 friends and I love, love, love this Bavarian Brew house. It was very clean, beautifully decorated, and well-stocked with toilet paper, Kleenex, and other essentials. Halie, the housekeeper, does an excellent job of cleaning this house. The cellar was awesome, loved reading about the history of it and playing shuffleboard. We, also, loved the automatic lights that came on in certain rooms. We would definitely stay here again!

The 1842 Baverian Brewhouse was the perfect rental during our daughter’s wedding weekend. The house is beautiful and comfortable. My wife and I were joined by our 2 adult sons and their wives. Three rooms with king or queen size beds were perfect. We used the well stacked kitchen to prepare food for the wedding party and ourselves. The outside patio was our final spot for a drink after the rehearsal dinner and then wedding reception. We only wish we had more time to play shuffleboard in the basement tavern. Great location. We hope to return for an anniversary weekend.

My group of 5 women were very happy with this home. We we’re excited at the fact that the building was built before the Civil War, and we loved how the house had been renovated. It had the historical charm with all the modern updates. The stone basement area was fascinating! We enjoyed the patio with the fire pit in the evening. I would love to return to this home, and we will all definitely recommend it to our families and friends!
