About this cottage rental
Southport is located where the Cape Fear River meets to the Atlantic Ocean. The harbor of Southport is protected by Bald Head Island and Oak Island, both of which have nice lighthouses that are great tourist spots. The town of Southport is frequently ranked in national publications as one the most charming small coastal towns and best walkable communities. Search these terms on the web and you will find articles from USA Today, Only in Our State - NC, TravelMag, Southern Living, and others. The town is small and filled with boutique shops and great restaurants as visitors to the surrounding beaches all make Southport a must-see stop. There are no high rises or big hotels in Southport. The downtown waterfront area is mostly residential and has many historic homes. Southport’s historic charm continues to remain strong. Walking tours of the historic sites or picnicking and watching the boats and freighters come and go from the harbor are favorite activities of both the residents and Southport visitors. The large waterfront park in Southport is wonderful.
The 205 E. Brown St. Historic Cottage is perfectly centrally located to enjoy all Southport has to offer. Located on a side street in a quiet neighborhood and just 70 yards from N. Howe St., the 205 E Brown Cottage is also just a 5-minute walk (4 short blocks) to the E. Bay St. waterfront park. 205 E. Brown is just a few yards away from Franklin Square Park, the local museum, and public tennis courts.
When you arrive at the 205 E. Brown St Cottage, you have parking for up to 3 cars immediately in front of an inviting picket fence and a few steps away from the full side-to-side Coastal Cottage front porch. 205E Brown is large with 2650 square feet and 2 levels. It is a shotgun-style home. This is a historical home and the local Historical Marker puts it at circa 1893. The Cottage has Heart of Pine floors throughout (both levels), 10’ ceilings on the main level, and door styling and trims that are true to the cottage’s historic roots. Everything else in the house is modernized to today’s standards for an upscale home.
As you enter the cottage from the front porch, the first room is a game room, complete with pool table, large HDTV and nice seating. A bedroom with Queen Bed is just off to the right of the game room, with a full bath (shower/tub combo) nearby.
Just past the game room is a very large and fully equipped kitchen with stainless appliances and a high-end gas oven and stove. Refrigerator with icemaker, mounted microwave, water filtration system, dishwasher, spacious counters, lots of cabinets, and large cast iron sink are all features of the kitchen. The kitchen cabinets include spices, crock pot, griddle, and all the other utensils and tools you would expect in a fully stocked kitchen. Kitchen includes a bar with chairs.
From the kitchen, and on the other side of the shotgun walkway is a room with stairway to 2 upper level bedrooms, the full bath for the adjacent bedroom. There is also a comfortable sitting area in this room, perfect waiting place for that family member who is always ready on time while he/she waits on the others to finish getting ready for the group’s next wonderful Southport adventure.
After the kitchen is a full-sized laundry room with extra large capacity washer and dryer. Laundry room includes a folding table and an iron and ironing board. It has a ceramic tile floor. The laundry rooms and the bathrooms all have ceramic tile floors. All of the other living areas of the cottage have heart of pine floors.
The next room is the dining room, which has a charming dining table comfortably seating 6, plus 2 overflow chairs nearby, and plus high chair. To the right of the dining room and also next to the kitchen is a private deck, which is where we keep the gas grill- very convenient to both the kitchen and dining room. Great space with seating, private, and a good spot to enjoy the beverage of your choice.
The last room on the main level is the living room. It is spacious with sectional sofa and other seating and includes a 55” HDTV. There are 2 exits with glass sliders- one to the back deck and one to a large screened porch to the side of the house. There is also a stairway to the privately accessed master suite for the cottage. The attached screened porch on the side of the house is large and has a nice couch and 2 lounge chairs and ceiling fan. The covered porch to the rear of the house includes a hot tub located in a spot where you can easily see the living room HTDV or overlook the courtyard-style back yard.
The upper level Master Suite is not connected to the other 2 bedrooms on the top level. Both areas are accessed by separate stairways and are completely private to one another- a great feature of the cottage. The Master Bedroom is large, has a king bed and large closet, and is en suite. The Master Bathroom includes 2 sinks and a shower/tub combo. This bedroom includes a private balcony overlooking the courtyard.
The other 2 upper level bedrooms are nice-sized and share a hall bath with walk-in shower located on the short hallway just outside of these 2 bedrooms. One of the bedrooms has a queen bed and the other 2 twins.
The courtyard behind the house is oasis-like and is surrounded by a 6’ privacy fence (10' in some places). Canopied evergreen foliage, flowers along the perimeter, picnic table, chairs, and hot tub all contribute to the courtyard’s charm and appeal.
The 205E Brown cottage cools nicely with 3 separate central A/C units- one for the main level, one for the upper level 2-bedroom section and one for the upper level Master bedroom. Propane heat on main level and heat pumps upper level, 2 bikes, games, nice library, DVD players, nice stereo, hair dryers, and many other nice touches to the home to make it a comfortable place to stay. The 205 E. Brown is modernized throughout.
The 205 E. Brown Cottage, although very close to the business district, is in a quiet residential neighborhood. Our neighbors live full-time, and the houses are close together in the historic district. After dark, our guests are expected to use "quiet voices" outside, and keep that in mind when using the fire pit, the hot tub, or general activity in our great hardscapes courtyard in the back.
Regarding our hot tub, we have had great experiences with it with our guests. We service it weekly. The hot tub is a recent high end Hot Springs Spa in excellent condition. The Hot Tub is not for children. Age 18 and up. If the hot tub has issues such that it would not be available (we have not had that happen yet), please contact us and we will do our best to get it back in service ASAP; however, it may not be practical, and if that is the case, we would not do a refund for the first 36 hours after the problem is reported. After that, we would rebate $30/day for any full day not available up to $150 for a week.
We searched for a long time in Southport before we found this gem property. Each hour we are there, as we hear the church chimes play hymns as it the old church clock strikes each hour, we are reminded how much we have come to love Southport, our location, and the 205 E. Brown Cottage. We love it, and you will, too.

The house was just perfect for us. It was walkable to every place we wanted to go. This was our second time staying and we will again.

This cute historical house is in the perfect location to walk to all the restaurants, coffee shops etc. We walked to breakfast and dinner on all the nights where weather permitted. The house is much larger than it appears in the online photos and there really are two separate sides to the house, front and back, which provides a lot of space and privacy. We didn't take advantage of the back yard but it was a lovely private space.
We didn't cook at the house but there was just about everything you would need to make most meals.
Due to some other comments from guests, I just made my life easier and brought a few extras with me..a few rolls of toilet paper, roll of paper towels and hand soap dispensers. There was only 3 of us for 4 nights so we didn't need a lot. I know others were annoyed by this but honestly it was not that big of a deal to bring my own extras. Grocery stores and Walmart are only a 5 minute drive so anything else you would need you can easily pick up there. We also brought our own bath towels as suggested which made things very easy on check out. There is ample laundry supplies if you need to do a load of your laundry and it was not a big deal to strip the beds and run the washer as we headed out the door.
Communications were really great and I highly recommend this house.

This is our third stay at this VRBO. It is the perfect place for our family. It's a very short walk to the water, pier, shops and restaurants. The house is lovely and has a wonderful front porch and back yard with lots of decorative touches and a beautiful garden. The jasmine was in bloom!

The pictures of this property do not do it justice! The home is much larger than it appears and every room was spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was loaded with dishes/cookware, and appliances. The back courtyard was big and private...we used the firepit and the hot tub, which was very well cared for and serviced/cleaned weekly. Screened in porch was great for morning coffee and evening cheese and wine!! The owner answered all our questions before and during our stay, and gave us great pointers on places to see/things to do. The house was very clean, beds were comfortable, decorated very nicely...we all just felt totally comfortable and at home from the minute we walked in the door! As for the location. We could not have asked for a more perfect spot!! We were able to walk everywhere in Southport, and it was an easy drive to surrounding towns. Always something to do!! We loved our stay and are already considering coming back to this rental with family!

We were in town for a destination wedding. The house looked older, which I loved, but inside was very modern and up to date! The way the bedrooms are arranged provide privacy for all of us. And, by the way, the beds were super comfortable! It is close to everything and we fell in love with the town! We felt very safe and had no problems except rain for our first days. The hot tub and the game closet were big hits! My cousin came by for a visit and was impressed with how the inside looked. I highly recommend!!

We stayed here for the weekend and everything was perfect. Check in was a breeze, the owner was very accommodating and we were able to check in a little earlier in the day. The house was very clean and was perfect for our group of 6. The outdoor jacuzzi and backyard was awesome and we enjoyed it there. I wish we would have had more time there as we may have actually used the updated kitchen but we ate out our meals. I give this place a 10 out of 10 and we will definitely be going back.

Beautiful home in the perfect location to downtown restaurants & shops! Kitchen had everything we needed! I also am a host & it was nice to see someone else think about all the small details! Furniture & beds were very comfortable. The only problem is we weren’t there long enough! We were visiting my brother who lives in St James for Thanksgiving so we didn’t get to take full advantage of all the amenities, but would love to come back & take advantage of all that is offered!

House was well appointed. Plenty of outdoor and indorse space. Upper levels a bit trying on old knees, but younger guests saved the day.

My family and I had a great short week in Southport for our Fall break. The house was exactly as described and the check-in process was very simple. Marc was easy to communicate with and answered our questions promptly. The house is located in the middle of the town which makes it easy to explore the area. Hot tub and pool table were added entertainment for my family to enjoy during bad weather and down time. Beds are comfortable and kitchen is stocked with appropriate utensils and equipment. Overall, we loved our time in this beautiful historic cottage in downtown Southport!!

Our stay was fine and we enjoyed the property. There was a list of chores to do upon departure. Some of the tasks were unrealistic with our morning departure and we did the best we could. Just read an article related to this very subject and VRBO said they are working on this issue.

House was clean & beautifully decorated. My kids loved the “clubhouse” in the yard, as well as the surprise dollhouse. Communication was fantastic from the get-go. Location was perfect and within walking distance to many shops and restaurants.
I only have a few minor issues. We had an issue with wasps on the MBR deck. I understand these things happen and I’m not upset that there were wasps, or even that my husband & 3 of my young kids were swarmed and stung multiple times (I was also stung when I walked to the doorway to see what the yelling was about- mine required an epi pen due to a mast cell disorder). What did bother me was that when we asked that they get someone there asap to get rid of them, he asked that we be at the house to meet the exterminator, Honestly, it’s bad enough that my physical reaction put a bit of a damper on the next couple days, as stings cause a great deal of swelling and systematic inflammation in me, but to be asked to spend even a few hours of our vacation sitting at the house waiting for the exterminator was a bit surprising. In the end, after I told him I would not stay, they did take care of it very swiftly and thoroughly- sprayed twice that day and left spray so that we were able to kill the few strays we found in the house over the next 2 days.
Not a big issue, but worth mentioning is that most of the many VBRO houses that we have stayed in have had at least 1 extra trash bag and hand soap in the bathrooms. We’ve even found a few bottles of water, coffee pods, or even a bottle of wine upon arriving at some- extra touches that make such a difference. This house had only the trash bag in the kitchen trashcan and there was zero hand soap anywhere. Since we were staying just the 3 day minimum, I hadn’t brought any of this stuff, so it we had to find the grocery store and purchase. Again, Not a huge deal, but for the price and quality of the house overall, these little things would have made it perfect at very little expense and effort from the owner.
The last thing I’ll mention that was a bit of a turn off is the fact that the owners ask you to wash, fold and put away your bath towels & say that it’s $100 extra charge if you don’t. Most short term rentals of this type ask you to throw a load of towels and or sheets in on your way out the door. But I’ve never been asked to complete and put away a load & having to do so delayed our departure
good stay but a few little things could have made it better

Family was in town to celebrate my SIL’s wedding. The house was perfect! Great location close to everything Southport has to offer. Renting a golf cart made it all that more convenient and spectacular. Marc was an excellent informative host. Would stay here again in a second!

Amazing Birthday Celebration
This house is in a beautiful location. WE had my 2 sisters, myself and our husband's with plenty of room. The kitchen was large enough for us to cook together. The pool table was a blast. We were within walking distance of every thing Southport. My husband and I have traveled to Southport for the last 13 years, this without doubt was our best visit. The house is exceptionally clean and comfortable. The kitchen was very well stocked with cooking utensils. The owner was very responsive with any questions. We definitely will stay again!!

Great location - within walking or biking distance to marina, pier, and museum/local attractions. Very clean and well stocked. Hot tub was so relaxing and everything was just beautiful!
