Wonderful historic town and tavern. When you want to stay in something other than the usual hotel this is a fun alternative. Historic for sure - dining only on certain days but plenty of good choices around - don’t miss Shaffer’s barbecue further down road - incredible food!!!!!

i loved the history of the property

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the most friendly people. Our room was on the 3rd floor, which didn’t bother us at all because we don’t mind taking steps. I saw other people complain about that… it is a historic Inn, so no surprise. We went to the tavern and had a wonderful dinner/cocktails on 6/19… I didn’t catch her name, but she got me my iced tea with vodka which was fantastic. Later that night, I ran into Jenna and Ricardo that gave me the best stories of the Inn… I will definitely look for them on our next stay!!! We had brunch at the inn on Sunday…our waitress had only been there a couple days. She was wonderful and actually showed us our way around all the nooks and crannies…I wish I was more alert with everyone’s names. Even the bus boy came around to make sure our table was clear of any used dishes. Seriously, wonderful time!! And for the people that put down being placed in “a servants kitchen… that’s where I requested to be!!! That’s why you stay in a historic place to begin with!!! We didn’t want to leave!!

We were fortunate enough to stay in one of the original rooms. Beautifully decorated, comfortable, clean and quiet. Exceptionally nice staff which told us the history of the Inn. I look forward to returning and having brunch with them on a Sunday.

Very unique. Absolutely loved the history.

This place is absolutely amazing. So much history and stories. Oldest Motor Inn in America. Highly recommend.
4.6
The country’s oldest motor inn.

Super creepy and old, feels haunted, tiny bathroom and 3 steps to access it. Need a step stool to get into bed. No staff on property after 8pm.
4.6
Nice quiet inn in a historic setting.

Everyone was super nice! Beautiful place!

A peek into the world of the past in a very comfortable environment!

What a unique inn!!!! It was very comfortable and the staff was wonderful to the point where the woman at the front desk walked me to my room, pointed out various things in the room as well as, when I went down to dinner, gave me a tour of the various dining rooms. I will definitely stay at the Wayside Inn again.

The accommodations were great. The room was clean. Besides the few restaurants in the area, you had to drive everywhere.

Our visit was fine but it hasn't been the same since new ownership has taken over. . .Previous owners Becky & George made you feel like your visiting Gramma for the weekend.

Loved this property! Staff is extremely friendly and professional. Really unique place to stay with a ton of history!! Also very active with paranormal activity.

It was a good stay. We knew it was an old building and we like to find those and check them out. I would like to eat there sometime and we will most likely stop again.
Had dinner in the tavern. It was good.

Very unique piece of history to stay in. It's like a step back into time. Love the water well that is preserved in the dining room. Each room is different. It's not a chain hotel vibe if that's what you're looking for - it's way better than that!

We arrived on Saturday, October 7. First we had a problem checking in, they said because we changed our date from the 6 to the 7. We would be getting the cheaper $84 room. I paid the full purchase price at the time of booking, that was approximately $234. We were told someone was coming in for that room, I was never told over the phone that we could not have the suite room we booked. We were told next that they just “threw “ us in a different room. This room was so filthy and the tiles in the bathroom were falling off, there was mold in the caulking and the bathtub had hair & dirt in it. I turned the fan on in the ac unit and was hit in the face with so much dust and mold smell. We could not stay in the room and left at 11pm. I was told by the manager that we would be getting a refund earlier in the evening, that was two months ago, No refund yet. After returning home I became so sick from infections due to the mold and had to go to the doctor, now due to this problem I now have a mold issue, now my immune system is compromised due to the filth we encountered at this Inn! Never would we recommend this establishment to anyone. Had this been handled better with the management things might have been different. Just a side note, the person at the front desk rudely told myself and the next couple how much she hated Expedia, funny since that’s who we all rented the rooms through! I’m out $200 for a room we never were able to sleep in, thank God we left when we did! Never again!

The warm feeling of an old inn…

Wonderful staff. Unique and historic inn. Clean comfortable and very interesting place with a very good restaurant on premises. So enjoyable.

If you enjoy historic areas, you will enjoy your stay here. We stayed in the Bernstein Suite that has a sitting room and porch besides the bedroom. There is a signicant staircase to get you to the room. The area is lovely to walk around.

This is a must-stay location. Very historic. The atmosphere is welcoming and I loved that it invited guests to interact with one another. The staff was awesome! Telling ghost stories and so helpful with plans.

The inn was amazing! Beds were perfect and the shower was out of this world. Needed a thicker comforter but heat worked great. Entertainment director was super friendly and helpful. Only drawback was we were there when the tavern was closed. Have to try it out next time....there will definitely be a next time!

This place is oozing with charm and history. Lovely people work here. Very, very old building - don't expect standard rooms. But if you are willing to go down historical paths - you will love this inn. In other words, showers are squeezed into small spaces and floors and walls slant in places. Otherwise, they provide all the basic amenities and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there if I pass through again.

Easy check-in process. Nice room and quiet location.

It was charming. The proprietors loved sharing information about the inn’s history. Lovely guest room, wonderful bed. Very much enjoyed the food. Overall very pleasing experience.

Stayed at the Wayside Inn/Larricks Tavern in Middletown (basically on the Cedar Creek battlefield). A quaint historical place, like staying in someone's fancy home. I will return here on future explorations of the Shenandoah.
4.6
This is a wonderful old inn. The place lacks contemporary convenience. Our bathroom was Lilliputian, however the place reeked of our country's history. We loved it. A great inn experience requires a few things. Hot water. A good bed. A place to have a Pint. A genial host. Five stars all around.

Staff is very helpful. I would definitely stay again.

I LOVE History so being able to stay somewhere with great History is awesome- The Inn is the OLDEST continuous operating Inn in America, I believe it was built in 1797, and was a key place during the Civil War- with History surrounding Stonewall Jackson and more! Just a mile down the road is another historical Plantation, Belle Grove also built in 1797- If you are a history buff this is a great experience, Dining was excellent and the staff went out of their way to accomadate me, as I have trouble walking sometimes. Would do it again and again!!!!

I would have loved to stay longer to explore the place. So interesting!

This property was absolutely wonderful. Very historic. Staff was super nice and the room was great. The king bed was very comfortable. I would definitely stay here again.

If you are at all a history buff or want something other than the chains then this is a good place for you.
The restoration succeeds in recreating the ambience of the 18th and 19th centuries in a major way. Check out the paintings and portraits of past times.
The suite was comfortable and spacious, with en suite facilities. A bit dated but certainly serviceable and well-functioning.
Be prepared to carry luggage up narrow stairs of the times.
The tavern was closed the day we stayed but Winchester is a short 15 minute drive east. It has a wonderful pedestrian common full of shops and restaurants. There are also restaurants near the Inn itself.
Probably the best way to experience the Inn is to spend two or three days there rather than an overnight; as a destination including exploration of the area.

The Wayside Inn was extremely unique and so much history.
4.6
The Wayside Inn is a travel back in time. The history is rich and the food was good. Each room is unique. The inn and rooms are furnished with antiques, so don't expect perfection.
4.6
The hotel has all the charm you'd expect from a 1797 Inn. Will definitely return for a long weekend, and check out the National Historic sites in the area. The restaurant had excellent food and service.
