Read before booking!!! This property is very dated and dirty. The rooms are from the 60’s. I had lots of bugs and fiddler crabs in my room. The bed sheets were dirty, the curtains, furniture and bathroom all dirty. The cups provided for coffee were dirty. The pool and beach furniture is very old and filthy. The food is lacking and only buffet. The bar in the lobby that is open at 6 is the best. The beach area is not good for swimming lots of rocks. My room smelled like sewage. There are much nicer beaches and hotels. Do more research.

Overall great experience, the main buffet was fantastic. The rooms were kept tidy by their staff, the activites on the resort were fun and engaging. The beach was awesome because it was tucked away from the hustle of the Tamarindo beach. Location was great because youre only a 15min walk from town.

The hotel is located on a beautiful beach. The grounds are also very nice. The staff was very friendly. But the drinks and food were subpar. Not worth the price of an all inclusive.

Property was clean and well maintained. The location and beach were wonderful. Everything is there for this to be a great resort but management needs to take steps to get it there.
1. Food-often overcooked with all of the meat being pressed so the juices all escaping during cooking making it very dry. The options at the a la carte Italian were blah and the Tepanyaki was ok but not enough spices used and no show.
2. Drinks-I am convinced after a week that there was no alcohol in the adult drinks. 3 adults of varying size having drinks during the day and none of us ever actually felt any type of buzz. Many times they ran out of basic ingredients and they never had more than one bar open at any time. How does a bar at a tropical resort continually run out of Pina colada and strawberry daiquiri mix. The rums and tequilas while packing no punch whatsoever tasted terrible.
3. Facilities-The resort green area is beautiful. The rooms need finishing touches. The bed lights lacked shades so basic LED bulbs were visible. The sliding door could not be closed completely while locked because of the make shift locking system that was installed. And the bathroom sliding doors had no lock for privacy and the boards making up the door were warped and see through which can make it uncomfortable when sharing a room with teenage kids. Also no drain plug in the sink so several items fell into the drain during the week.

Staff at this hotel were lovely. The property is nice. It wasn't the all-inclusive you'd find in Mexico though if that's what you're expecting - they regularly ran out of different types of drinks (not that that really mattered to us), and the snack bar available all day did not have good food. We didn't really enjoy the Italian restaurant food either. The pool was good, and the beach is beautiful, but it's not a swimming beach as there are rip currents. Otherwise, the food was fine. Overall, this hotel was alright and worked for us for the 4 nights we were there. If you're looking to visit Tamarindo but want a quieter spot and don't want to worry about meals, then it's a good choice.

Staff was incredibly rude and not enough dinig options.

I think you get what you pay for, the hotel is very dated, there are a lot issues with these old buildings, food is kind of the same every day, drinks are watered, customers service is ok at best. this is not a 5 star hotel.
I would never go back there.

Beautiful property with amazing surf! Super fun wave! The main restaurant is not air conditioned and there is not a swim up pool. But the buffet had excellent food and a good selection. Super close to downtown which is fun for food and shopping. The staff was AMAZING! Super helpful and the resort was very clean! We saw a whole family of monkeys in town and tons of fun colorful crabs and iguanas! We will definitely go back!

Maid service lacking. No towel replacement. Phone in rooms did not work.

This is a small simple resort. Very well kept and clean. The food is not fancy but ok. Breakfast is the best of the meals with egg station and fresh fruit smooth station. We enjoyed the sushi and Italian a la carte dinners.
We are not a drinkers so I can not say about that.
The employees are very nice and all work very hard.
The life guard Greddy is awesome. He keep everyone safe and he also take care of my kid who get a see ray brushed on her ankle.
Thank you!!!!
If you are looking for a fancy resort/meal this is not the place for you.
4.0
Not a fancy property but ocean view rooms do not have any view
Rooms are not fancy
Bathroom window was broken and the handle was missing and not closed
The hallway light was broken
Property is not close to town

The pool and bar were good.
Did not like the quality of the food at all. Breakfast. lunch and dinner buffet had the same food pretty much. Only 2 specialized restaurants and cannot reserve if you are not staying more than 3 nights.

We weren't sure what to expect from this all inclusive, but it met our needs. Check in was a bit of a hassle, not enough staff, but when they greet you with a nice cold drink, it helps! There were some issues with pool towel tickets, and not enough towels for everyone upon arrival, as most people went right to the pool, but not a big deal. The room access was nice with a wristband that was chip enabled to open your room without having to fumble around and carry a card. The daily buffet had a very nice selection of fresh foods, and the 2 restaurants onsite were good, we liked the Italian better than the hibachi. The snack bar was average, with burgers, fries, chips, etc. Sometimes those items were picked over, cold, or had been sitting out for a while. But the drinks made up for it! Overall a nice place. With a little investment, it could be great!

I recently had the pleasure of staying at The Occidental Tamarindo Hotel, and it was an outstanding experience from start to finish.
The hotel is ideally situated in the heart of the city, making it convenient to explore major attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas. Despite its central location, the hotel offers a peaceful and serene environment, providing a perfect escape from the bustling city.
The service at The Hotel is impeccable. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warm smiles and exceptional hospitality. The staff went above and beyond to ensure my stay was comfortable and enjoyable. Special thanks to the concierge team for their excellent recommendations and assistance throughout my stay.
The room was spacious, elegantly decorated, and equipped with all modern amenities. The bed was incredibly comfortable, appreciated the attention to detail, such as the nightly turndown service and the welcome basket of fruits and snacks.
The dining experience was exceptional. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of delicious options, catering to all tastes and dietary preferences. I also had the opportunity to dine at the hotel’s signature restaurant, where the cuisine was exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. The service in the restaurant was attentive.
I will stay there again.

The only thing we liked about this hotel was the staff. They were very nice. However, the facilities and condition of the hotel were subpar at best. The hotel is NOT a five star hotel as advertised. The facilities are veryyyy outdated. Everything felt old. Our AC barely worked. Our bathroom kept leaking water (not sure from where??) and the floor always had a little puddle of water so we kept having to put a bunch of towels to soak it up. Part of the shower head didn’t work. The buffet was very limited and repetitive. Some of the fruits in the buffet had fruit flies and bugs. There were multiple raccoons roaming around the property and hanging out by the dining tables!!! The beach is horrendous and not as pictured. You will not be able to swim in it. Not what we expected at all and definitely not worth the price. The only reason I’m giving 2 stars is for the amazing staff.

Elevator was broken for 15 days. We were assigned a room on the 4th floor. We had to carry our luggage up and down. No help from the staff. Never again.

Overall a C-/D , I kept waiting to be impressed but never happened.
Pretty much everything was sub par: Had to pick around at the buffet to find food that was actually edible.
Some (not all) of the staff had a snarky, superior attitude.
Only 2 bath towels in the room for 3 people,,,,really? They would not serve you an "Imperial" brand beer, that was for VIP only. Gimme a break. Had to bring a "ticket" from your room to get a towel at the pool.
Our first room had an AC leaking directly on the floor leaving an actual puddle on the tile, not to mention water leaking from the above room down through the light over the bathroom sink! They moved us to a room right next to the place where they do the shows, very LOUD , would not have been able to sleep but thank goodness I brought ear plugs.
And just a warning, There is NO BEACH here, just ROCKS, lots of huge, sharp rocks. Have to walk 1.5 miles to an actual beach. Also, google the Crocodile attacks here.
I would not stay here again. Look elsewhere.
Just my opinion, YMMV.

Not really an all inclusive that you get in every other country. Food subpar. Even their exclusive restaurants the food was not good at all. And they limit your food and drinks. Better off going into downtown tamarindo

Food was mediocre, beach chairs and pool chairs were filthy, room smelled musty, had major leak in the bedroom area when it rained in the townhouse,

To start, this hotel discriminates to a whole other level. We were never offered any drinks or a bottle of wine as they “advertised”. The food was really mediocre and not a lot of options. The buffet is pretty much the only thing “free of cost”, they have specific hours to eat and they usually start closing 35 to 40 minutes before they are supposed to. They want to charge additional money for using their amenities. Staff doesn’t ever check to see if you are doing good. I would rate them a 0 if I could!!! Do not book in here!

Great time. Staff terrific.

The property and rooms were clean. It was close to shopping, surfing, and other activities.

Staff was amazing. Property was pretty.
On a side note please do yourself a favor and stay away from LEO on the beach outside the property - he blatantly took money from our entire group of 12 people (and called half way through our day to PayPal more so we could continue) He did not give us the excursion he promised, said he would refund money daily, but every day was a different excuse as to why he still hadn’t. Upon further review, he has done this many times! He used to be with the hotel, or so he said- I can see why they wanted him gone!!!

Not worth the money they charge for a supposedly all inclusive

I really wanted to love this place. From the jump front desk people were so rude during check in. Elevator broke when we were on it and stopped working the rest of our stay. Tv did not work, sink got clogged, they would not give us blankets and they don’t have 24 hour service so if you need anything during the middle of the night you’re screwed. All inclusive buffet and food was not well maintained everything had flies, looked like it had been sitting, discolored food. Out of everything in the whole buffet 2/50 items were probably edible. There’s a fancy restaurant included in your stay if you stay 3 or more night, we chose the sushi place not only was it horrible but we all got super bad food poisoning and were throwing up nonstop. We stopped eating all the food a day into the trip because it was not worth it. Drinks were fine but you can’t have them in the pool. Food by the pool was a pass too smelled like crap right by the food not sure if it’s the bathrooms nearby or what. Our room was right by the club and entertainment center where they do shows they have blaring loud music all night until 1 am so it was hard to sleep. There was also mold in our shower. It says it’s rated 5 stars on every site but it’s giving was 5 stars 15 years ago and wasn’t well maintained. Deff needs a lot of upgrades. I also wish the staff could have been more accommodating.

My boyfriend and I were pretty disappointed with the “resort”. They did not mention online that the “all-inclusive” didn’t include the nice restaurants that they advertise- only a mediocre buffet. The snack bar was very gross and the buffet food gave us food poisoning. We found plastic in our food too. They say they’ll give you free waters but then lied to my face twice when I asked for some to take my medication with- they wanted us to drink the regular water at the buffet.. then finally a nice lady gave us some water bottles so they were in the fridge the whole time, they just lie. I could understand if it was a cheap hotel but this was supposed to be an all-inclusive resort. The pool was gorgeous but closed at 9pm which we thought was really early. Our shower had a smell of sewer coming through the drain. The housekeeper cleaned our room twice, well, but both times forgot a bath mat for us. My boyfriend cut his knee on the rocks at the beach and they only had bandaids, no ointment or first aid kit. We also would’ve preferred to hear Costa Rican music instead of cheesy American music.. I will say I appreciated the kindness of most of the staff and I liked that my room stayed cold. The beach was a pretty location, but we won’t be staying here again.

My experience at Costa Rica was nice. However, there were several issues at the hotel that took four days for them to address. They finally switched rooms but a little late. The food left much to be desired. Left the hotel to find food that would live up to my expectations of Costa Rican food.

Occidental Tamarindo is a smaller resort. The food was limited but good. If you're looking for a mega resort to hang out at stick to Mexico but if you're going to see Costa Rica this is a nice place.

I had a nice stay at occidental however I feel the resort should update the lighting on the resort. At nite it’s pretty dark. And they need to have make sure your rooms are stocked with wash clothes. I went several days begging for wash clothes. I had to use the hand towels to bathe. And thank god one of my friends from the trip gave me one because she had multiple. And they also need to have options to eat after 10pm.

There were bed bugs in our room and the staff ignored it.

I really wanted this to be a good stay. There’s so much room for potential in such a beautiful place but it needs work. They ran out of ice almost every day, the staff was friendly but you can tell they’re short staffed. The rooms need to be updated. The WiFi only works well near the pool and reception area.
The pool was warm, and with the heat it’s not helpful to keep cool.
Over all it was an OK stay. The location is secluded and the beach access and activities by the staff made it fun.
5.0
I definitely enjoyed our time at Occidental, the staff are all super nice (especially someone working in the entertainment of the resort, I forgot his name, who took the time to learn our names and would always say Hello and was overall such an amazing person)and the location of the hotel is in a nice little corner on the beach allowing you to swim in a natural current that is between two beaches. It was our 10 year anniversary and the hotel provided us with a nice bottle of wine when we arrived and a nice surprise in our room with flowers! Thank you!!
Some things they should do to improve satisfaction:
1. Shower head in our room was old and was not pouring the water properly.
2. Cleanliness of the pool more often.
3. Consider cooling the pool for super hot days.
4. They had an event during our last day that they only advertised 30 minutes prior to. They should definitely advertise this to the guests more in advance as it was a fun show to watch and I feel like more guests would enjoy it with proper advertising for said events.
Thank you for the amazing stay!

Buffet was like a Golden Corral . pools were to warm to be refreshing. Noise from the disco was so loud that I couldn’t sleep and staff could or would not accommodate my request to move rooms.

One of the nicest places to stay in tamarindo! Dining options are great and pool area is well put together
