Really felt welcomed and had a great stay!

It's a period inn so I expected a small room. The room itself was quite nice, however, the bed mattress was extremely hard and uncomfortable. The room lock worked, but the main building lock didn't , so the building wasn't secure. Also I didn't receive any housekeeping service during my stay. Newport accommodation is always expensive and this was no exception, but the next time I visit I will spend my money elsewhere.

Cool place spread across quiet historic street
4.1
nice place to stay very typical of the newport old houses. They manage to keep the spirit of the place without being too rustic too old.
4.1
Very well situated, right in the old part of Newtown. Quiet neighborhood and close to the busier streets. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Kindly let us stay past the check out hour.
We didn’t get a room in the house we had reserved (not in Melville but in an adjacent house) and the room we got didn’t look like the pictures posted on line. It was a little poky but since we only wanted to use it to sleep in, it didn’t bother us much.

It was a great stay.

Historic building, small but quaint & comfy room. Tiny but very clean bathroom & shower. Staff informed us of small rooms & bathrooms in advance. Staff was very helpful & wanted to make our stay with them & Newport enjoyable. Staff advised us about restaurant week & made helpful suggestions. Highly recommend a stay here.

Overall great! We loved it and will be back. Staff was very helpful, the room was cozy, and you can’t beat the location! Only a 5 minute walk to downtown.
Only downside was we kept finding so many flies, and a couple bees in our room. They were all by the windows so we assume the windows aren’t in properly or something. Only felt like a minor inconvenience though for what we got!

I loved the location on Clarke Street, it was close to the places I wanted to visit. The room was comfortable and clean, and the staff was helpful.

While I scheduled a stay at the Melville House, they overbooked and offered to “upgrade” me to an attic room with a hole in the ceiling covered by a piece of plywood, a concave king bed, a toilet that didn’t flush, and a ghost that sat down on the edge of my bed in the morning. The Wynstone was not the upgrade I was expecting.

I felt like part of the family! Much of the staff has been there for years because they treat everyone like family! Owner actually went to get me soda that I liked and stocked the refrigerator! Amazing historic place, convenient, and cozy

This was a short vacation to Newport and we thought a stay at an Inn would be nice. We booked online and contacted by Rick before our planned arrival. He also met us on our arrival, helping set us up with parking. The house sits on a quiet tree lined street along with other homes of the same era. He asked about our needs and shared the size of the shower (small). We agreed it would be fine. And while it did work for us it was indeed small. Other than the shower the bath is old and small. Floor tiles were old and cracked. The fixtures were dated as well. Taking a seat on the toilet required a bit of aerobics as the sink partially over hangs it. The GFI outlet didn’t work at all even after attempting to reset it via the buttons. My wife had to use a household extension cord that was extended to an outlet in the room in order to use her hairdryer. Two other non GFI outlets in the room had only one side that would hold a plug in place. The wall paper and paint showed their age. The bed was comfortable with clean linens. The flat screen TV was set on top of a dresser and worked fine. This is a colonial era house and is without any real insulation between rooms or the foyer. This resulted in a rather loud environment. The noise from the front door opening and closing as well as other room doors was high as was that from the steps which are wood and uncovered. While some of this was exacerbated by one set of guests it was just the same loud and disturbing. Wrong room perhaps?

Good location, staff was pleasant.
Did not have a mirror in our room and didn't like not having a bathroom in our room. Mattress was average at best.

Rick, Otelia (my apologies if I misspelled) and the whole staff made me feel completely at home in this quaint, quintessentially New England B&B. It is no frills but I loved every minute and you have all you need. You cannot as for a better location! I was right down from Bellevue Avenue to tour the « cottages » and I was right around the the corner from America’s Cup Avenue and Thames Street for great restaurants and pubs and just staring out at the water. Loved this place!

This was my second year staying a Melville House (or related property) for the Newport Motor Week. The accommodations and the location are excellent; central to wherever you want to go. What elevates the experience, however, is the the helpfulness and generosity of the innkeeper, Rick. I trusted that if if I ever had an issue (which I didn't) it would be taken care of.

My stay was fabulous! The manager, whose name is Rick, could not have been more accommodating to my needs. He even made sure I would have parking, no small feat on the tiny streets of Newport, the room was bright, spacious and it had all the amenities I would expect and from start to finish. It was definitely five star! I would definitely go there again.

The owner was very ospitale and friendly.

The Melville House was not available when I arrived with my daughter due to the central air not being on at the time and no other guests were staying at the time so we were offered a smaller room with a larger size bed in one of the Inns owned by the same people, across the street. This Inn was very nice, clean, and we had everything we needed for a short stay. Coffee and water available downstairs in the foyer. The bathroom was impeccable. Comfortable bed. Window AC was not too loud. Overall a great stay.

The manager was amazing. If you needed something, the staff had it for you even before you realized you needed it. Definitely a real gem.

Great for a quick trip to Newport !

Highly recommend this place of staying!

Good bed, nice people. But the place is filthy. I think the old spider sac in the bathroom has been there about ten years, along with the mold around the shower. There's a vacuum in the hall but no one used it on my floor. Maybe I'm supposed to clean my own room?

Best location available for the price (high season). Parking available. Walking distance to basically all of newport. We were there for a friends wedding. Staff super friendly and lovely. Only issue is that the room was never cleaned (garbage emptied), made up or fresh towels provided in a 3 night stay. Nor was the parlor cleaned (no garbage can either) of peoples empty cups and water bottles which littered the tables, etc.

Two concerns would be that 1) at no point were we notified that the Office was located in the house next door. The actual Melville House has no one there to check guests in.
We found this out at the last moment when calling to ask about an earlier check in. And 2) the front door does not lock at all, manually or with a key, which was given to us.

Great location!

Warm and friendly reception and authentic concern for my comfort and needs. Conveniently located and accessible.

Very clean, friendly staff, small but cute room, great location.

We were originally booked into the Melville which is part of a group of Inns on Clarke St. We moved to a larger room in the Farragut House. The room was large and comfortable, Rick the owner was attentive and pointed us to some awesome places to dine that were all in walking distance. Continental Breakfast was included and good if a light breakfast is your thing. A larger breakfast is available for a small fee. Overall, a lovely visit, especially if, like me, you are a history buff. I would book here again.

It was my first stay at an inn it wasn’t what I expected but I don’t say that in a negative way it served the purpose of our stay
