Everything was great, and the service was nice. However, the private hot spring couldn’t be reserved in advance, so we had to wait until checkout to see if it was available. Also, there was no shuttle bus, which isn’t convenient for someone traveling on foot, especially on a rainy day.

Genuine and 5* Ryokan experience. Food was excellent (although they did not check dietary preferences / needs and so I could not eat the set menu they provided). Beautiful setting in the mountains. Would have loved to stay longer.

Thanks for the wonderful stay

Typical Japanese ryokan with great wellness facility. Rooms are spacious but simple and no tv.
You shouldn’t mind sleeping on the floor but mattress is fine

之前住高山櫻庵,感覺唔錯,唸住深山會係高一級,點知係同lv, 房普通,景普通,食普通,又冇獨立房,服務都只係普通,同價位由布院已經有高級溫泉旅館
Everything is average, room size and facilities are average, food is average, service is average, if you want try high end onsen hotel , you may consider others. The location is great and close to 上高山

The stay was awesome with beautiful room and private onsen. We also enjoyed the public onsen with great scenery!

What a treat. We were wanting to stay up near the ropeway but that was closed for repairs and the spots near there were full. I bumped into this spot on line and it felt like a secret treasure. Loved the Onsen baths. Dipped into every single one on property including my own private one in my room. We both slept great in the traditional beds on the floor. Super cozy sheets and feather pillows. Meals were outstanding. Little things needed a bit of a freshening. Like woodwork that needed refinishing and the coat/ robe you wear over your traditional pants and tops were a bit full of threads to be trimmed. Tho super cozy and soft and everything was super clean. That stuff is so small. Would totally come back.

An amazing onsen experience in the mountains.

If you want to stay close to all the attractions the Kamikochi area has while also staying in a very comfortable hotel, this is the place for you. The kaiseki food at the hotel is superb, and the hot spring bath options are great, right in the middle of nature. I strongly recommend staying here for a relaxing vacation.

I appreciated the hospitality of the employees.
It was comfortable to enjoy the hot spring in the room.
Breakfast was very good. Dinner was so-so.

Amazing stay at this ryokan! The onsen in our room and private outdoor one were amazing and relaxing. The food was excellent, including the free milk, Yakult, and ramen throughout the day. All the staff were so kind and hospitable.

The hot springs were good. There was public bathroom and private ones. The private bathrooms did not need to booked. Nice staff. Comfortable room with good view.
But the restaurant was poorly ventilated. On my first dinner day, the smoke flew towards my face. The staff seemed not much can be done even I spoke out. I appreciate they changed my seat on the second day.
The time of meal was strict. I asked a time for breakfast on the next day. They told me just tell the staff at dinner time. But while I told them at dinner. I was rejected for that particular time coz it was full. I accepted but not feel very happy.
I appreciate the hotel try to keep some culture of Japan such as exchanging slippers after entering hotel, keep the room key when the guest go out. But I think not all the staff familiar with the policy. They got confused while I asked for my room key when I came back.
It was not cheap. I expect more for this cost and the rating ( on hotel.com).
But I appreciate there are some staff know English.

Amazing location and amenities. The outdoor public bath was incredible, and we splurged with the onsen in the room, which was worth every bit. There was also a massage chair in our room which my partner greatly enjoyed. Dinner and breakfast all incredible, but the front desk staff we had issue with.
Initially the fortnight prior to my booking, I could not find out access to the hotel, and emailed to ask if there was a shuttle pick-up location. I did not receive a response.
Two or three days prior to the booking, I researched online and discovered there was a free shuttle from Hirayu Onsen, and emailed a follow up, asking if I needed to book the shuttle or what times they would go by. Again, no response. We ultimately ended up walking to the hotel from the Hirayu Onsen stop, which was ok that day as it was downhill and good weather.
The other issue was on the day we checked out. I had checked with the front desk the night prior as to whether we could use the shuttle service to go up the hill to Hirayu Onsen, but the earliest it started was 9.00am. As we needed to leave by 7.00am, I thanked them and declined.
However the next day it was raining at check out time. We were not offered umbrellas, or an offer to call a taxi. They watched us leave with no comment. We finished our two night onsen experience which cost me over $1500 for two nights, with wet clothes, shoes and luggage.

Fabulous place, we love it. Onsen is very nice with various choice to select from public to private. You have to try the private outdoor one, it is fantastic.

The hotel was lovely and I would really recommend it.
We had a suite. It was very clean and comfortable. The beds were traditional style ie very low to the ground. I personally found the mattress quite hard, but I’ve found that everywhere I’ve stayed so far. My husband liked it! The onsen in the bathroom was one of the best things about the room.
The hotel also had public and private baths inside and outside. You have to reserve the private baths, but we had no difficulty doing so. The outside private bath was beautifully warm.
The hotel also provides kimonos and traditional work style top and bottoms (can’t remember the name) to wear whilst at the hotel. You also have to wear their slippers. However they catered mainly for shorter people. My husband, probably a UK medium had to have extra large and the slippers were too small.
The staff were all very polite and spoke some English.
We ate at the restaurant for dinner one night and it is definitely worth doing (if you like Japanese food). A variety of different courses.
The only improvement I can think of is if we could have been given a bit more info on arrival about what we needed to do about booking the baths, what we should wear in them etc. But we figured it out okay in the end.
The hotel is close to the bus station so easy walk. They also had a shuttle bus that could drive you up to the bus station.
If you did want to eat somewhere other than the hotel there were quite a few options close by.

A very nice onsen hotel with extremely helpful and friendly staff. However we found it overpriced comparing to other onsen hotels with similar facilities. We stayed in the Japanese style room with private onsen bath tub. Very nice room but the layout is not as pleasant as other onsen hotels. Overall a very nice hotel but we'd stay in other onsen hotels as there are many other choices with the price we paid.

A beautiful onsen hotel, a 5 star hotel.

We booked the hotel with the hot tub inside the room, dinner and breakfast included. The meals were all amazing!! One of the caveat is the hot tub doesn't look as big as it advertised but a small one that just fits one person with legs folded. The private outdoor onsen allows 30 mins per session, which is enough for most people. But for elderly who walks slowly, that might take up to 10 mins to get there and change, the time would be a bit rush. If they could provide 45 mins per session that will be better. Also, when we reserved the onsen session at night, the old gentleman at the counter says he will give me a call to our room when it's ready. I never received the call and when we called at our booked time (10:30pm) to check, he didn't understand what we said and said it was full. The call was passed to another lady who can speak better English and then said the onsen is ready. It took around 10 mins for them to figure out the availability but the session expires in 20 mins. Walking there without getting lost and get change etc almost left us with 10 mins in the onsen. So be sure what is communicated and understood by the staff is important. Not much view from room, but all in all it is a comfortable stay.

This is a well organised, well run onsen that will allow you to tick off your bucket list wish of visiting a traditional onsen; if it isn't on your list it should be. Recommend paying extra for an onsen in your suite although you cant beat the outdoor private onsen for ambience. The set dinner was a culniary delight ...and frankly not much other options in Hirayu if you don't eat in. The only caution is that you'll over indulge in the artistery bthat goes on in the food presentation. Highly recommended.
