This stay has been the highlight of our Japan trip! The staff were so welcoming and accomodating to our needs (vegetarians). The location is absolutely stunning being surrounded by the mountains and rivers.
Our room was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated in traditional ryokan style. The room included bedroom quarters with futon beds made at night, dining area, TV, aircon, toilet, shower, and heated private onsen. A private garden was included as well. The inclusive breakfest and dinner was super delicious and interesting to learn about the local produce.

A Japanese inn. Traditional. Nice hot bath. Easy to get lost! I did!

I travel solo to Japan for 2 weeks and this hotel is probably one of the best experience I had in Japan. The room is clean with traditional Japanese ryoken style. Very comfortable with AC and fan. It has an awesome river view. The restrooms are shared but I never had a hard time using it. I actually never ran into anyone and felt that it was my own restroom. The grounds are beautiful with koi fish and meditation garden. You can reserve a private hotspring each day to yourself and that is where you will shower/bath. The best part of the experience is the staff lady who serve me breakfast and dinner. Such a nice lady who explained all the food that is being served. The food is the best food I had in Japan and it is homecooked and is a 10 course meal. If you have the chance, book this hotel.

Staying at Fukuzumiro was a total experience. We were greeted at the door, removed our shoes, and felt as if we’d gone back in time. Our room faced the river, providing a calming sound backdrop. The shared bathroom is rustic but clean. Breakfast, dinner and an afternoon snack were all served to us while relaxing in our room, and each meal was wonderful. Our room attendant, Akiko, explained bathing etiquette and made us feel at home. Each of the private baths is different— I recommend trying each of them.

Such a lovely historic ryokan experience, our first ever!! The inn is old and rustic which gives the feeling of going.back in time. The onsen mineral bath experience was worth trying, but reserve a private one if you want to enjoy with your companions instead of other travelers. Our room
Had no bathroom, so toilet is down the hall and showers in the onsen rooms.
Our corner room has lots of windows/screens that open up to the sounds of the river below. Meals are served in the room and then table is moved and futons set up for bedtime. The food was typical Japanese style and good. We opted for western breakfast. The staff were amazing and attentive. Great experience if you want to try a traditional stay.

This is a century old building so don’t expect any modernization. I have been to other onsens that have upscale accommodation such as having a toilet in our own room. This one doesn’t have a toilet in the guest room. However, if you are up for the ryokan experience., it is good. I love their traditional dinner and breakfast which their brought to our room. Love the staff. Extremely nice, patient, and caring. Love Japanese! We walk up and down the road to a small town next to the local train station every day so we could enjoy the beautiful river and mountains. Lots cute shops and restaurants in the town if you don’t reserve any dinners or breakfast with the resort. It is not an ADA building as there is no elevator in the resort so be prepared to walk up and down the stairs. The wonderful staff carry our luggages up and down of the stairs for us. Thank you 🙏 for your services!

This hotel was absolutely amazing. Our meals were delicious and they were able to cater to a vegetarian diet. The hosts were also very gracious and helped us with how to navigate to our train stop the next morning and even helped with repairing a wheel that had fallen off my suitcase earlier in the trip. The onsen experience was amazing as well

The hotel from the initial walk in was beautiful and felt as though we were stepping back in time. Our room with papered walls and tatami mats, overlooking the river was breathtaking and the food carefully layed out by our nakai-san was exquisite and our nakai-san was wonderful, meticulous and patient with the many questions from our kids.
The private onsen was relaxing and a luxurious treat. Honestly, it was a highlight of our trip. The photos do not do this place justice, like most of Japan.
We had read some reviews online before staying which were slightly critical, which we found umdeserved and i can only assume those reviewers need a weekly fix of abu dhabi bling.
If you want to experience a moment of historic japan in an atmospheric, beautiful setting with amazing traditional food and attentive, friendly staff i cannot recommend this place enough.

Amazing onsen experience . Can’t get a more authentic old world experience. The food and the beautiful service were 5 star!! This will be the highlight of your trip. Went with our 2 teenage daughters and loved every second! It was a step back in time!

Feels like you are transported in time! Excellent service...and it wasnt too busy when I stayed. There are only a few rooms and it felt very quiet. Booking the private onsens was easy and the staff were super attentive! Food was AMAZING.

We had a wonderful 2 night stay in Sakura 4 (January, 2024). We opted for the "half board" option and were spoiled with two delicious - and generous - kaiseki style breakfasts and dinners. We managed to try all of the private onsens during our stay and had no trouble booking times that worked for us.
Fukuzumiro is a special place. That said, it is not a 5 star hotel with fancy amenities. The building is historic and the shared bathrooms are quite basic. But if you're looking for a legit ryokan experience with superb food and hospitality, Fukuzumiro is the real deal.
Big shout out to Akiko for taking such great care of us!

We loved this ryokan! It’s very old school and feels like a step back in time. We stayed here on an overnight from Tokyo and it was an enchanting experience and total change of pace. Our room (Seseragi) was spacious and was surrounded by trees and a rushing stream so that it felt like living in nature. The meals were fantastic and the service was gracious and welcoming. Also, it’s wonderful that they offer both private onsens that must be reserved as well as public ones that you can use anytime.

Cosy ryokan. Our room was spacious and clean. Dinner and breakfast was served to our room (and delicious!)
The hot springs were relaxing, but the water temperature felt just a little too hot when getting in.
Shared bathrooms were a slight inconvenience, but this was known when booking.

Wow, what an experience. From the moment I arrived, a truly special stay. Loved how they’ve kept so many traditional elements. Thoroughly enjoyed getting a tour from the host and hearing about the history of the property. The host was so kind and helpful. Was in awe of my room - right by the river and so stunning with all the wooden textures and paper doors.. felt like I’d stepped back in time. Shared bathroom but actually had it to myself as no one else was on my floor. Dinner (served in my room) was an incredible experience. I was on cloud nine. The onsens were all wonderful (I tried three). The sound of the river was so peaceful. Gosh it was relaxing. I loved the futon bed and waking up to the sunlight coming through the doors. It was truly a magical experience I’ll never forget.

Very relaxing. The view of the river was beautiful. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I used the public bath on property but had it all to myself and my daughter reserved a space in one of the private baths. Great osen experience.

We didn't want a big modern resort but a traditional Japanese ryokan and we loved the stay here. The kaiseki meals and services were amazing! We stayed at Sakura 5 and it was very spacious for a family of 4. The building is showing its age but that's part of the historic charm. Highly recommended for an authentic Japanese ryokan experience.

Building was beautiful, staff very polite. The food was great. The onsens were definitely not scalding hot like we’ve read in other reviews.

Excellent stay at this ryokan! The staff were extremely friendly and the food was delicious. Had male and female onsens as well as three private onsens available for reservation. Stayed there in the summer and beware there is no AC but the staff did provide us with a fan that kept us cool while we were sleeping. Would definitely recommend!

It’s a very rustic property. Like going back to old Japan. Just like a Ryokan should be.

Beautiful location, exceptional food, outstanding service! If you're looking for an old traditional ryokan in an incredible location with a beautiful view this is it. Onsen baths are wonderful with both private (you can book your slot after checking in) and public options. The staff are extremely attentative and welcoming and the chef easily accomodated our dietary restrictions in an amazing 6 courses menu. Wonderful experience, can't wait to go back!

It is a great and historical onsen to stay in. Everything was traditional and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We dropped off our luggage early and they were in the room by the time we checked in. They provided a very tasty mochi snack initially. The dinner and breakfast were amazing, not to mention the excellent services.
Onsen were great too. You can reserve private or use the public ones. When we visited, other people used private ones more often, and we had the public ones to ourselves.
This is the place to go if you want to experience a traditional onsen and hotspring experience. But if you are looking for a more modern and accessible ryokan, this might not work for you. The place is big and depends on where your room is, you might need to walk down 1-2 floors and a hallway to get to an onsen. You don't have a private restroom and it is shared with other customers.

Wonderful stay. A traditional Japanese ryokan, soft futon, lovely onsen (three private bath where you can reserve for an hour each and two gender divided bath which switches at 7pm so that you can try both), and delicious Japanese traditional food at your room.
The best thing about this ryokan is the architecture. Wooden three story building that is more than 100 years old. Three story wooden buildings are very rare and you can see that a lot of effort is put into it to keep at the level that they are maintaining (wood tends to bend with humidity and if you consider that this ryokan is standing by the river). You should check the ceiling, many types of Japanese wooden art.

Mammy was very helpful & accommodating. We had booked a large room for 7 of us, but as the hotel was quiet that night, she arranged for us to have 3 separate rooms. Excellent meal & service, staff were all very friendly. A wonderful experience of a traditional unspoilt Ryokan

Excellent service. We were welcomed so warmly, it was an absolute treat. This is a very unique accommodation type for a Westerner. Some things to note: a small 10 min walk from the train station, traditionally Japanese futons on the floor, shared bathrooms not too close to the rooms. The pros: beautiful Onsen area that can be used anytime, male and female separate in case the gender mix bathing makes you nervous. The in room breakfast and dinner were some of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had traveling, absolute feasts. Beautiful view from our sitting area in our room. Just a great place to come relax, have a tea, take some quiet time.

Fantastic service, friendly staff, comfortable bed, beautiful scenery and great traditional experience. Needed to know a bit of Japanese to understand the staff at times and got hit with a few unexpected costs like karaoke and an onsen charge, but was otherwise very enjoyable. Had two incredible and delicious meals prepared for dinner and breakfast also.

We spent an absolutely wonderful night at Fukuzumiro and can’t recommend it highly enough. The staff was incredibly kind and friendly and the onsens - both shared and private - were relaxing and lovely. We also enjoyed the meals served there. Our only regret was not planning to stay longer!
