This was one of, if not THE, most amazing hotel experiences I have ever had.
The service was EXCELLENT. We received a lot of individualized attention (I.e., we were assigned a hotel staff member who took care of us the entire stay, the staff greeted us and escorted us to breakfast and dinner every meal). Overall, the staff was SO hospitable, kind, friendly, and accommodating. We were sad to go.
We are a couple on our honeymoon in Japan. So we decided to splurge on the nicest hotel suite. Worth. Every. Penny. The room was gorgeous. The private onsen and balcony were amazing. The yukata, toe socks, bathrobes, PJs, tea and cakes, and complimentary minibar were much appreciated. The room was so convenient and well designed—it made me wish we had a tatami room in our home.
My only note (and this is not a criticism of the hotel), I would perhaps do meals a la carte. There was a bit too much food for me personally and I did not want to be rude by not finishing. Also, as an American, I am not accustomed to Japanese breakfast foods, so it was a bit of an…adjustment. I can also be a bit picky with seafood, so I may have preferred ordering a la carte. But these are all personal preferences. Just thought I would share.
We would come again and again. You will not regret staying here—it is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime hotel experience!

We had an amazing time here. It's something we're not going to forget. The staff really roll out the red carpet for you the entire time, and their dedication and efficiency is impressive. The room was lovely, with a suit of high-quality ammeneties. The dinner and breakfast courses were huge. Multi-stage set meal that were varied but incredibly delicious. I wouldn't recommend this if you are a fussy eater, as though there are some safe options, most of it is quite different for a western pallet.
Your stay here will be relatively regimented, so if you wanted to explore everything Hakone has to offer, it may not be for you. That being said, the location is right next to the cablecar station, so after checkout you can easily get to the top of Hakone mountain and do some day exploration.
My partner is a vegetarian, which they did warn us they couldn't accommodate. We managed to workaround it by swapping certain dishes and items (and my partner being more flexible with their vegetarianism), but this did require a lot of trying to identify what certain things were (they supplied a menu, but it wasn't always clear what was infront of you).
This is my only critique, everything else was an incredible experience. One I would recommend if you have the extra money and want to make a stay in beautiful Hakone that much more special.

The is a fantastic hotel. The private bath was great, and the breakfast and dinner were amazing.

Our stay at Gora Hanougi was wonderful - the staff went above and beyond to look after us and we had the most delicious and beautifully-presented evening meal and breakfast. The traditional Japanese beds were comfortable and it was amazing to have a private onsen in our room with a view of the mountains. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Japan and probably the nicest place we've ever stayed - wouldn't hesitate to recommend staying here!

Fantastic experience. Felt luxurious. The staff made us feel like royalty for 2 nights. The private onsen in our room was amazing. We also ordered some massages that probably were the best we ever had. The food is great. The dinner and breakfast are done in a great atmosphere in a private room. The food is delicious, but I will note that it can be considered “adventurous“ at times for western taste buds. But that’s OK because there’s enough variety if something is not to your liking. One important thing to note: It’s not a good place to go if you’re vegetarian- because they will not serve you. Go there only if you eat fish / seafood.

This hotel was built several years earlier than its nearby ten-year old sister hotel, Gora Hanaougi Madoka No Mori. While I was paying nearly identical room rates at both hotels, the size of my room at Gora Hanaougi was only about half of my room at the newer hotel. Also, unlike the sister hotel, the bathroom in my room here was not connected to the shower room nor the outdoor onsen balcony. However, our room had a great view of the hills. The staffs here were attentive, warm and helpful. Similar to its sister hotel, this hotel also provides free pickup and drop-off at local attractions and Gora Station on demand, which was great because the roads to and from the hotel are hilly. I view the high points of my stay at this hotel were its dinner and breakfast, which were truly exceptional in terms of creativity, presentation, ingredient selections, tastes, and services. Bravo!

The service rendered by the staff was impeccable - Joshua, Aiyumi and the watchman plus all staff who worked there ensured we were well taken care of and provided excellent assistance particularly on transport arrangements. Food was a lot and great. The private onsen in our room was excellent and my son enjoyed it. The public onsen with the outdoor garden was beautiful, my daughter and I enjoyed it very much. We will be back again.

The staff of the Gora Hanaougi and their culinary team are all exceptional. Every need was met with kindness and consideration, and in some cases some needs were met before they were expressed because of the staffs dedicated observation. I have never received such a high level of care and every amenity was provided and the rooms were spacious and beautiful. The kaiseki meals were all beautiful and delicious. The private onsen was convenient and private. The staff were also very helpful in providing gentle guidance of the various etiquettes surrounding onsen/Ryokan culture. Though my Japanese is essentially non existent, communication was never an issue.

Joshua-San and Minami-San, thank you so much for taking such good care of my family during our one-night stay at Gora Hanaougi! As many mentioned, the hotel along with its surrounding is a dreamland on earth with its serenity and natural beauty. But with your warmth and hospitality, you gave the place the personal touch that makes it stand out.
A special thank-you to Joshua-San for enabling my daughter to enjoy this life time experience to its fullness. With her severe food allergie to fish and nuts, I felt apprehensive since the first day I booked our stay months ago. I had bombarded you with numerous inquiries, but you answered each one of them with great patience and detail. Language could have been an unfortunate barrier in this place full of Japanese tradition, but with you acting as the bridge, we were able to enjoy the place with ease and confidence.
Thank you!

Gora Hanaougi exceeded my greatest expectations. The staff was accommodating and kind. We missed the luggage delivery time at the train station so we brought our bags to the ryokan. Not knowing, we walked up the road from the cable car stop. On leaving, the staff guided us to the private elevator to the cable car stop--super cool. The meals were incredible, though so much food. The onsen was very lovely and the baths in the rooms had an incredible view. I can't imagine a more beautiful view to go with a soak. Overall, the experience was very relaxing and rejuvenating. Highly recommend.

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and it was without a doubt one of the highlights of our trip. The staff was wonderfull from the shuttle pick up to the welcoming at the entrance of the ryokan to the day we left. We ran into some trouble with our luggage transportation service with another company and they went out of their way to call the transportation company to help us out. We are so grateful for their help. Our room was beautiful and clean. The bed was comfortable and the amenities were great. The private onsen was truly an amazing experience. The thermal water was so hot, but the bath was equipped with a system to add cold water to cool down the temperature. The public bath was great as well. The included dinner and breakfast was delicious. The whole dining experience was so unique and very pleasant. I wish I remember the name of each person that helped us during our stay so I could mention them, but all the staff without exception was amazing. We will definitely come back again!!

We really couldn’t have had a better time! If you can, please do yourself the kindness of booking the suite. We truly did not want to leave. The level of service at Gora Hanaougi is truly unparalleled. A really beautiful space with really wonderful people!

the food was great; the hotel staff was responsive to requests; the onsen area was very well kept and clean

Far from the craziness (in a good way) of Shibuya, this incredible experience was a welcome respite. The staff could not have been more gracious or welcoming, particularly Joshua who definitely had his hands full trying to help us with our luggage and general lack of planning. The dinner and breakfast were exquisitely prepared and presented. Sadly, I don’t like seafood much so it was a challenge. If you have a more sophisticated palate and like seafood and sashimi you will be in heaven. One last thing, so you don’t make a fool of yourself, the brown slippers are meant ONLY for the restroom. Wear socks everywhere else in the building. Our room was a terrace view with onsen bath and that was heavenly. Particularly with coffee before the breakfast. Overall, a great stay and uniquely Japanese experience.

This was an absolute highlight of my Japan trip. If you have an opportunity to come to Hakone. This is definitely one of the top ryokans to stay at! Great service and hospitality and very close to the ropeway and cable station.

The inside of the property was very elegant; service was top-notch (Minami was a great hostess and had served our family very well); the room was very large for a family of five, complete with toiletries and stocked with beverages for the entire family!
The indoor and outdoor onsen was a great amenity, and everyone in the family had enjoyed it.
This hotel provided our family with a traditional Japanese ryokan experience: the Yukata for everyone in the family was so fun; the traditional Japanese dinner was over the top, featuring 9-course meal; the traditional Japanese breakfast though less formal, was equally impressive - everything was wonderful and fresh! The dining room with tatami mats, and shoji screens was very beautiful.
The location itself was harder to get to - there was no shuttle service from the Shinkansen (bullet train) station, and with a family of 5, had to take 2 taxis to get to the property; the hotel concierge was able to get us 2 taxis to leave the property back to the Shinkansen station, which was very helpful. Though the inside was wonderful, there is hardly any room to walk around the property - we can see gardens outside the windows, but seems like there's no trails to walk around the property to enjoy the gardens.
Overall, I would give this ryokan a 5-star, and what a great way to experience Japanese tradition!

This was the most amazing place we have ever stayed from the moment we were picked up at the Gora station- we entered the property and were greeted by 5 staff whose entire focus was on making our experience as wonderful as possible. It was a magical experience! I do not have words to describe how perfect this place and the people are. I would rate it exceptional

Staying at this traditonal onsen was a great experience. Private hot spring bath with a beautiful view was amazing. The staff was incredibly accommodating and helpful. The only issue is that the dinner and breakfast were beautifully prepared traditional meals that we just did not have the palate for so we could not appreciate.

All staff are extremely nice and professional. Everything was streamlined and you can really relax during the stay. Especially thanks to our lovely host, always showing pleasant smile and paying attention to details. It was indeed a very pleasant stay and a memorable one for my mom and I. Thank you for the hospitality and see you again soon !

Always enjoy staying here as the service is excellent and the food is solid. Biggest draw for me though is the private onsen bath as it's always a nice temperature and the water is running constantly.
