A beautiful remodel. Very comfortable.

Unfortunately we came during the cold snap. The radiators took forever to heat up the house and the first 2 days we all walked around in hats and gloves. The house is spacious, although very dated. Some of the rooms had a musty / old smell - you eventually get used to it. Not sure if it was the cold or something else, but all of us had terrible issues with our allergies while we stayed. It is 3 separate areas that you have to go outside in order to reach - this is not ideal in single digit weather. None of the fridges had water dispensers and the water from the faucet was cloudy, so be prepared to buy bottled water - although good news, there is a grocery store nearby. I’m guessing it would be a nice place to stay in the spring (although summer renters be wary, there is no central air). I don’t think we will be back - it did not work well for the 13 of us. Also - there is a clause in the rental contract about a hot tub - but don’t get your hopes up - there was no hot tub.

Decor was a bit rustic/grandmotherly. But comfortable for all. A bit of musty smell in unit 1, but dissipated once the heat was on. Incurable beds, newer baths. All in all, a good find.

We have a large extended family group who take a trip together to the mountains during the fall of each year. This house is unique in its layout and arrangement and actually worked very well for the multiple smaller groups within the family. The inside was spacious, and the outdoor areas were very inviting. I particularly liked the very wide porch on the main level which was well furnished with a nice large table, plenty of chairs and several comfy rocking chairs. The lower patio area was also nice and the firepit worked great for smores night. The house is over 100 years old and exhibited its charm with older fixtures and hardware but nonetheless had all of the modern necessities. As far as I know, everyone in our group really enjoyed our stay at Birdwood and enjoyed the charms of Montreat and its neighboring Black Mountain community.

Birdwood was the perfect size for our family when we were invited to a destination wedding. Historic home with lots of character. We loved the fire pit patio, just wish we had more time to enjoy it.

This is a 3-story house with multiple bedrooms in a decent neighborhood. It's very old but functions well. It'd be nicer if there is a game room with foosball/air hockey type of entertainment.

The home is old but and has apparently been in the family for many years but it needs help. The furniture is dirty, the bed spreads stained, pots and pans old and tarnished and glass were dusty and not clean. The basement apartment is very musty, the family that stayed there all had score throats and sinus issues, also there were squirrels or other creatures running back and forth in the ceiling.
The other two floors were a 3 raring and the basement a one. We also spent an hour cleaning the front porch, patio and other porches just to get in the home without tracking leaves etc into the house
The outside area is nice and large, it is in a great location but would not recommend until furnishings are updated and generally the house has a good cleaning and updated bedding, furniture, pans etc.
We stay at VRBO properties 4-5 times a year and unfortunately this is the first poor review we have ever given

Location of the property was good. And the size allowed our large family to spread out. Colors of the trees amazing!
Unfortunately the conditions of the property stirred up our allergies & asthma.

This was a great place for our extended family to meet up again after the past years covid crisis. We had plenty of rooms and baths, lots of walking trails in the area, and close to a good grocery store. Very nice place.

This home worked fabulously for our family reunion. Outdoor and porch seating great for conversation. Local hiking trails were wonderful. I enjoyed the older home with neat decor. Only downside is that family needs to be comfortable with bathroom sharing.

This house has so much character and a lot of room inside and out. We were a group of 12 but everyone had there own space. We loved the deck and the patio and spent a lot of time in those areas. Beds were very comfortable. Would definitely rent again in the cooler weather, we picked the perfect week for that.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Plenty of room for our big family. Lots of towels and linens. Very quiet. The wraparound porch was wonderful for socializing, playing games and eating. We have already booked for next year!!!

Thank you for such a memorable stay. It made my mother’s memorial special and everyone was impressed with the house and mentioned how they lived the space.

This unique 100 year old home property worked well with our family reunion of 4 families with 4 children. Multiple spaces in the house with many bedrooms. There are 4 separate apartments. Comfortable beds and kitchens were stocked with everything we needed. Internet wasn’t working but owners were pro active about troubleshooting. The outside spaces were great with covered porches, fire pit area and play area between circular drive. The area was great for our family. Many hikes when you walk out the door - no driving necessary. Also cute town of Black Mountain close by with shops, restaurants, and Ingles grocery store within 2-3 miles. Montreat has a nice playground also for children.

Birdwood was the perfect spot for a getaway with extended family. Everyone had space to spread out and have their own personal space, but we all come together on the fabulous wrap around porch. I loved the vintage character and the mix of spaces. The ground floor was nice and clean, but not too precious for little kids to run around in without worries. I also appreciate that it came with some toys and books. All the kitchens were well stocked with everything we needed. Bathrooms were clean and cute. The setting of Monteat was just gorgeous and I loved that we could just walk out the door to hop on a variety of trails. I highly recommend Birdwood and Montreat to all!

We were in Black Mountain for a wedding and stayed the weekend with a group of family and friends. What a great house, it added so much to the fun and the adventure of the weekend.

Got together with friends who moved away. This house was so much fun. We hung out on the porches and played card games and visited. It was good old fashioned fun.

Many family members came together to celebrate my son's wedding. The patio and porches were perfect for outdoor dining. We were a little surprised that there was no central a/c. And, since we were there in August, a few rooms stayed uncomfortably warm. We also didn't realize that we would be making all of the beds ourselves. We thought the linen fee included beds being made but we had to make all the beds ourself. We rented the entire place but did not realize that there are 3 separate units, requiring one to go outdoors to get to another part of the rental. I thought that might create challenges since we had children of all different ages going back and forth throughout the weekend, but it actually wasn't that big of a deal. The bathroom door on the main floor unit did not have a lock and after a few people were barged in on, my husband bought and installed a slide lock . The fridge in the main floor unit does not have an ice maker so we bought ice to use for the weekend. There was no large room indoors to congregate so we spent a lot of time outside (which was quite nice). The house has great charm, and the area is beautiful.
