Beautiful concept. A very old olive oil producing village recovered and turned inta a hotel. The ancient houses turned into hotel rooms. Breakfast varied and excellent. Would love to return

The staff was all over us and we had no privacy— people were in our backyard cleaning the pool and dealing with various maintenance issues the whole time, testing the water, cleaning buckets and tools in our space all morning, no sense of the serene and calm that there is in for instance the main pool area. So that was odd. The dinner meal was increbly bad— inexcusable in every way. As if no one had ever been to a nice restaurant in for instance Ca, which this place should feel like since the surroundings are full of gorgeous fresh produce and would easily translate to a farm stay experience. Our server gave us Cabernet when we asked for light red, and without telling us the price the most expensive. Then we asked for pasta for the kids since the table nearby had been offered, and then, after waiting over 30 minutes, the kids were served a bowl of potato foam with no pasta in sight because, we were told, the chef had a “surprise” get out of here!! It was so bad I can easily describe it as the worker meal in years, and def the worst in Greece by order of magnitude. And the price for all this food that basically tasted like eating straight chicken boullion and raw crayfish, at cat food sized portions, was almost $300. It was absolutely laughable in the end. The owner was seated nearby and never once glanced out way, though clearly our waiter was struggling and we were engaged in long back and forth with his staff. Terrible.

We had an incredible stay at Kapsaliana. The room and property were stunning, the staff was very kind and helpful suggesting things to do, and the food at the hotel restaurant was some of the best we had in Crete. Would absolutely stay again!

Much thought has clearly gone into making this a haven of peace, which also has wonderful food. Very hard to find anything negative to say about it - we loved it.

ONLY spent one night here but it was very special. An abandoned Cretan village now turned into a tasteful, sophisticated hotel with opportunities for wine tastings and spa treatments if desired. EXCELLENT restaurant with great wine list. Breakfast offers a variety of choices. Staff are obliging and friendly. I have seen other posts which say the prices are high for Crete but I don'g think you can compare this level of accommodation, food and service with other hotels in Crete.

A unique hotel. The restoration of the ancient monastery provides a pleasing, restful site. A very good pool. Food in the restaurant was average and expensive.

The food was the best I had in Crete. My only complaint will be the email inquiry about potential waiting list for vacancy was never answered.

Incredible hotel in a beautiful hidden away location. Super relaxing and serene accompanied by amazing service and unbelievably good food and wine. Will definitely be returning!

The grounds and restaurant are beautiful/fantastic. The rooms could use some decor and sprucing up. The front desk staff weren’t always so helpful!

Fantastic looking hotel. Service was great. I was disappointed though on the food. There is literally nothing about the village for other options, you really have to drive into Rethimno which is a good 30mins away.
The food is all very Cretan - which is great at first, but very much boring after a few times. I ate at the restaurant and I got ill. When I was better, I wanted plain food, so the only thing I went for was the bread basket on the menu - my god the rocks outside the hotel would have been easier to chew! I then asked for some basic plain crisps - they did not have anything like this - as substitue I got some spicy nut mix! I was also hoping the pool menu would be good - there was nothing great and I decided to not bother. Overall my memories of the food was that the grapes were nice!

Amazing stay in a beautiful location. We only had one night so just stayed put and enjoyed the property. It is a bit far to use it for a home base during a longer trip. The restaurant was outstanding!

I will preface my review by saying this hotel probably isn't for everyone. It is extremely secluded and remote and is not within close distance to restaurants or shopping. My husband and I, even at 27, found this to be a huge plus. We absolutely loved how private and serene the property was, but for some people, this might not be appealing. Also know taxis to the hotel are not cheap, and if you rent a car and are driving to the hotel, the roads are extremely narrow and winding, and directions are fairly unclear. However, I cannot say enough good things about this property. We honestly did not want to leave and regretted only spending three nights here. Unfortunately, we were visiting many other spots in Greece, so our time was divided this trip, but we will absolutely be back. We did rent a car, so we drove into Rethymno frequently, which was about 30 minutes. We felt like this was doable and were super happy to have the flexibility not to be obligated to use taxis. Everything at the hotel is beautiful from the buildings to the flowers to the views. The food is wonderful, and the service is superb. Our room had everything we needed and more. We truly treasured our time at Kapsaliana, and you will too!

The conversion from old village was beautiful, and the service from the more junior staff was excellent. However the room had damp on walls and a dehumidifier but still a dank smell. Management staff were dismissive and could do nothing to change the room as were fully booked.
Restaurant was very good, if limited in choice, but oddly most interested in us having a reservation, which we had, and given there is no where else for miles an odd obsession to keep asking.
The place is beautiful, a better room and we would have loved it, a little more understanding from senior staff would help too.

Delightful welcome homemade lemonade and history of property. Fabulous meal at restaurant. Grounds are beautiful, pool delightful. Customer service oriented. Wish we had used the hotel as a base for our entire stay on Crete.

Beautiful spot. The old village of Kapsaliana, with its olive press, has been converted into a hotel. Our room was in an old stone house with the bedroom up a narrow stairway and the living room, bathroom and an outside terrace downstairs. The rooms vary a lot, some with no terrace, so worth checking exactly what you will get and maybe paying a little more for an upgrade. The service and staff were wonderful, as was the restaurant which prepares an amazing buffet breakfast. We had dinner there both nights and the food was superb. Beautiful pool area and great views of the surrounding area. Very highly recommended.

This was undeniably the highlight of our trip to Greece this winter. There was a very high level of subtle sophistication - in the design of the room and village, the amenities, the service. The food was top-notch. We also got incredible service on tips for day trips, down to help renting our car and informal travel itineraries each day. It was a quiet, magical place to spend our New Year’s holiday. Not a highly touristy area, so may not be the easiest to get to, but that is definitely what we preferred. We hope to come back!

Perfect for a few days of total relaxation in stunning surroundings. Staff had it just right. Rarely eat in hotels but food was exceptional. Cannot fault other than minor niggle with shower pressure not being great.

We loved this hotel. It was understated luxury. Beautiful pool, fabulous breakfast and dinner, small with only 18rooms, helpful and friendly staff.

An absolutely wonderful experience at the Kapsaliana Village. We stayed for 7 days and could have stayed longer. The staff were amazing and very helpful. The restaurant was fantastic for breakfast and dinner with great variety, quality and hospitality. We ended up having our best meals in Crete at the hotel thanks to their award winning chef. The property is nestled in a quiet, secluded hillside which is perfect if you want relaxation by the pool or walks through the neighboring olive orchards. I would recommend having a car if you wanted to do any excursions.

Nice location to drive into rethymno town or explore the nearby countryside. The property was immaculate, the staff fantastic. The bed was a bit saggy, which made for a poor nights sleep. Otherwise excellent all around.

Absolutely amazing property, amazing setting, wonderful service, the whole place even smells like heaven! The only issue is it's pretty far up in the mountains, so getting anywhere is a significant drive - not a place to stay if you only have a few days in Crete but a wonderful oasis if you have the time to enjoy it!

We had a great time. We wanted rest, warmth, sun, a place with character and not a mass produced tower block. It met all the requirements. We arrived pre-holiday season and were the only people in the hotel. This gave us a real opportunity to get to know the staff and talk about the area and its history. The room was clean, calm, with soft sand colours and wood. The bed was spectacularly comfortable. The climate was warm, however we will return during the real summer, but the staff - all of them were warm and engaging. You need to hire a car, we didn't, but had we stayed longer we would have done. If concerned about budget get a price for on site meals as they will cost more than on the water front. The food was good, fresh and full of flavour. But, it was the wines that stood out for me - chilled quality red Cretan wines, a must.
