About this cabin rental
Nestled in Buffalo Cove on the quiet side of Lake Santeetlah, our log cabin is the perfect combination of historical charm, modern-day rustic style, and cozy comfort. Lakefront, wooded, and private with multiple outdoor spaces overlooking the crystal water of Lake Santeetlah, this authentic Appalachian Cabin is quite possibly the most unique property on the lake. Hand-built in the 1860s in Old Fort, NC, and moved to its current location in 1969, the cabin has been lovingly restored with well-appointed amenities while maintaining the historical character of this Early American treasure.
Travel back in time to a slower pace to create a deeply relaxing experience that you and your family will cherish for years. With constant views of breathtaking Lake Santeetlah and the gorgeous Smoky Mountains, the cabin is located in an outdoor lover's paradise.
Just 10 mins away, you can witness the virgin stands of 400-year-old trees down the hiking trails at Joyce Kilmer Forest. Paddle the lake on our house kayak and canoe, fish the lake or nearby trout streams, or dive off our private dock for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake Santeetlah.
The Cherohala Skyway & Tail of the Dragon less than 10 mins away - and the world-renowned Tsali mountain bike trails, 30 minutes down the road. White water rafting or zip lining your thing? Check out Nantahala Outdoor Center 40 minutes south toward Bryson City where you'll find the entrance to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park and the Qualla Boundry - home of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
With 3 large bedrooms, 2.5 baths, a spacious living room, an upstairs reading nook, an eat-in kitchen, and a screened-in porch, everyone has a comfortable place to relax and ample space to gather. Hang out on the lakeside deck or take a few steps down to the private dock for a dip in the water, fishing, or launch a canoe trip. Take your catch of the day to the covered deck to enjoy a dinner to remember – this deck is equipped with both a gas and charcoal grill, seating for 6, and party lights. End the evening stargazing and roasting marshmallows by the fire pit.
The 3 bedrooms are all very large. The main bedroom has a king bed and en-suite full bath with a step-in shower. The upstairs has a King bedroom with an en-suite half bath. The other upstairs bedroom room has two queen beds.
The main level also has the laundry room and second full bath with tub. The front porch has 2 steps to the ground, and then there are 6 more steps and a gravel path to the dock.
Our cabin is a hand-built home that is over 160 years old and has plenty of quirks as a result. The upstairs is accessed via a staircase with low headroom that has bonked plenty of heads over the years. The upstairs floors are bouncy and noise isolation between rooms is poorer than a modern home. The upstairs half bathroom is partitioned from the bedroom with a shower curtain, which while functional, is not very private. We try hard to keep the spiders and pests out, but you may encounter cobwebs or a bug.
Guests may use our canoe, kayaks, and PFDs, but must clean and return them to storage when done.
Easy access via paved state road. Parking for 2 cars beside the cabin. Cabin is on a road that gets some vehicle traffic, commonly at commute times and Sunday morning.
Cabin has slow internet and a landline phone for guest use. Our wi-fi internet works well for messages, searches, wi-fi calling, and some streaming video - as long as only one device is using the internet. Our internet will not support multiple devices, gaming, zoom calls, or downloads. We do have a diverse DVD collection, board games, jigsaw puzzles, and books to read.
Most cell phone providers have poor to no service on the property. WIFI calling works for phone calls and sending and receiving messages.
Guests are asked to help turnover the cabin – start a load of towels, start the dishwasher, and bag and take out the trash.
Sorry, no pets, parties, or smoking allowed. This is our family’s cherished place and we expect all guests to be respectful and communicative.
Enjoy the trip you are planning! If you have any questions about the cabin for your trip, please message me.

You can sit and stare at your spouse or watch a DVD, end of entertainment. Attempting to watch TV is not worth the effort, it’s similar to 1994 dial up connections without the weird noise, constantly buffering. Zero cellular connection so if you’re into being in the Stone Age this is the place to go. There’s a few things I didn’t notice in the listing when I booked the house, like you are required to strip the beds before leaving, place all the dishes in the dishwasher and start it before leaving, collect all the bath towels you’ve used and put them in the washing machine and start a load before leaving. I can’t swear those are not in the rental listing but I didn’t see them. I cleaned cobwebs out of numerous corners upon arrival and began wondering why I paid to clean up before and after a week’s stay. I’m writing this review after staying for 4 days in April and then for a week in May that was planned over 6 months ago.I’m not ever going back but others may feel differently. Good luck and enjoy.

We went for the fall colors and it didn't disappoint. Mike the host was responsive to all our needs and a pleasure to work with. If you are looking for a place off the beaten path you will find it here.

It was a very charming place, the outfit of an old cabin modernized with ventilation and electricity. The decor was qell thought out for what it was (no "lake life" or "live laugh" adornments anywhere). The most exciting additions to my stay, other than the canoes and lake itself, was a vouple of skillets he left hanging over a stove from my childhood. It was like i was cooking in my grandpatents house again, making pizzas, burgers, heating soft tacos, reverse searing steaks, getting fat. Didnt lack anything needed as far as appliances, cleaners, TP, and even though the house is right by a road, it was very quiet outside. We didnt fish, which seemed like a good place to do so, but my wife and I treversed the lake, burned wood in the firepit, got drunk on the dock (we are responsible adults) and just enjoyed this awesome place. I would say any reasonable person wouldn't find a flaw on this property bad enough to ruin their vacation, it was clean and kept in good shape, and that always deserves 5 stars. Cheers

We loved our stay in the lake santeetlah cabin! It was beautiful and we enjoyed being on the lake, canoeing and swimming near the dock. We enjoyed the fact that there’s essentially no cell service and wifi is pretty much non-existent! Thank you for sharing your cabin with us!

Upon arrival we were instantly excited and in love with the cabin. The old time charm, peaceful surroundings and mornings on screened in porch enjoying the 10 or more varieties of bird chatter made for a vacation of relaxation. Nice fire pit area. All though fish weren’t biting enjoyed time on water. Easy boat launch access 15 minutes away. A must Joyce Kilmer Forest. Amazing hike. But can’t say enough about the cabin and grounds. We didn’t want to leave. Will be back!

Absolutely charming old-world cabin with all the modern comforts! Saying we enjoyed our stay is hardly saying enough. The house is terrific, with the character and quirks of historic spaces but wonderfully restored and updated so it provides easy living. We thoroughly enjoyed fires at the outdoor firepit and the ease of the electric fireplace for that extra-cozy atmosphere inside. The location was terrific for our daily hiking outings and it was a pleasure to unwind and play games around the table in the evenings. The owners are quickly and easily accessible if there are any questions at all--friendly and very helpful with tips about local food and rec options. House is well-appointed for a getaway so it was easy to get in and settle in--they even had the whole house well lit for our nighttime arrival so it really was like we were coming home for a spell!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this historic log cabin. It is so cozy and inviting…a perfect place to refresh and relax. It was too cold to be outside for long but sitting on the dock all bundled up was so peaceful. My family loved our time there and we would definitely stay again.

Renting this cabin was the best decision I made this year!
It’s hard to pick a best part of the stay: the beds and linens were awesome, and we saw plenty of extras if we would have needed them. The canoes and the dock were amazing. The porches were lovely. The decor is lovely. The remodel is classy and the original aspects of cabin are incredible. I was charmed!
The owners and their support team (cleaner and handyman) were so polite, efficient, and thorough. The owners are quick to respond helpfully when there was a random issue - the neighbor accidentally shut off the wrong water line when winterizing their cabin- and within 10 minutes of telling the owner, we had the property caretaker present to fix the situation and water restored. He explained there was backup water if anything happened, which makes me think the owners planned for contingencies well!
This is a great place for a group who likes to have fun together and is tolerant of noise (the floors are squeaky and you can hear convos from floor to floor). There are many outdoor places to spread out and have quiet time. The scenery is lovely on midOctober. Truly, there’s no reason to leave a 10 minute radius from the cabin… the national forest is even better than the national park.
I can’t say enough good things about this property and how significant the time was for our family - experiencing beauty and togetherness.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. There are so many thoughtful touches with the decorations. The bedrooms are just as beautiful as they look in the pics and very large. The beds were all very comfortable. We really enjoyed the screened in porch on the back. It was rainy for a good bit of the time we were there so we spent a lot of time on the porch playing games, reading books, etc. The kitchen was well stocked. The only thing I couldn’t find was a strainer but a pot lid worked just fine. The outdoor area is great. So many spots to enjoy. We made s’mores one night. We also rented a boat and the dock worked just fine for that. There are some trees down in the creeks back to the property but an experienced boater can easily navigate around those. It is an older cabin so there are creaks in the upstairs floor and cracks in the walls where critters would come in and join us occasionally, but it was too be expected with the age of the home. You are truly off the grid at the cabin. The Wi-Fi is very poor, but it was a good thing for us to enjoy an electronic free time. There’s a basket of dvds in the living room that we enjoyed as well. The lake is absolutely beautiful too! Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would recommend this property!

My family of five had a wonderful time at the Santeelah log cabin. The cabin is well-stocked, comfortable and very clean. The walk to the dock is very short and easy. The lake is gorgeous. The neighborhood is quiet, and the lake turns into a stream that is very pretty if you walk up the road. The owners are quick to respond to questions. We especially enjoyed the firepit, which is tidy and very pleasant, with fairy lights strung across the area. There also is an outdoor grill that was very clean. We ate dinner on the screened porch or at the picnic table outside, though there is table indoors and another on a covered deck. We loved that there were canoes available, though we ended up not using them. (We rented a boat one day and went to the NOC another day. There is excellent hiking in the area, which we enjoyed.) The only negatives are that the ceiling of the TV room is the uninsulated floor of one of the bedrooms, so be aware if some of your crowd likes to go to bed earlier than others. Also, the WIFI is weak. We had some trouble streaming a movie and gave up (though the owners have a stash of DVDs available for viewing) and neither my husband nor I could connect to our remote offices. We were at a party tonight and recommended this cabin to a friend. We would love to return!

This lovely, historic cabin was a great place to meet family for the weekend. The owners were wonderful to give lots of info and thought of every detail. The cabin is gorgeously decorated and perfectly appointed. The indoor space was beautiful and relaxing with separate space for all in our party. The screened in porch was a favorite place for morning coffee and watching the evening sunset. The kitchen had everything we needed. However, we spent most of our time outdoors. The cove is peaceful for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and floating. We found the trout stream off the left side of the dock and our teens caught their first trout! To the right, we paddled to explore the lake and find rope swings. It was so fun and peaceful. The outdoor spaces with twinkling lights, fire pit, outdoor dining table, etc. were also fabulous at night. After catching fireflies, we made smores and lingered until the fire went out. Plenty of seating on both the dock, deck, and firepit areas. If you want to relax - - this is the perfect place. Amazing weekend - - we will definitely be back!

We threw the baseball in the front yard and we had space to use our telescope. The porches had beautiful views of the lake and wildlife. The kitchen was fun to cook in and plenty of seating to eat.
