About this villa rental
Casa Del Tesoriere is a stunningly beautiful 500 year old Palazzo that has been lovingly converted and restored by my family.
It is located within the ancient walled city of Mdina: home to many grand palaces that housed the wealthiest and most influential families of Maltese nobility.
Widely popular with tourists and easily one of the most picturesque properties in Malta, it enjoys unobstructed views over Mdina’s Bastion Square, it is truly a gem.
Ideal for team building/work retreats!
The space
The palazzo, named Casa Del Tesoriere, is situated in the heart of Mdina - Malta's old capital city.
Mdina is a fortified Medieval City of around 300 inhabitants. It is one of Europe's finest examples of an ancient walled city and is extraordinary in its mix of medieval and baroque architecture. It is home to many palaces, and used to host Malta's wealthiest and most influential families. You now have the opportunity to reside in one of these palaces.
Living in Mdina is comparable to residing in an open air museum. It is a perfect location for those who enjoy culture and for those who would truly like to experience residing in this magnificent city steeped in history where everything is within walking distance.
Its location cannot be emphasised enough - it is situated WITHIN the walled city of Mdina (not in other towns such as Rabat, Bahrija, Mtarfa or Mosta nor in the outer-limits of Mdina). This is quite a rarity as there are very few opportunities for tourists to live and reside within Mdina. Our location in the 'Silent City' of Mdina is unrivalled compared to many other available properties that advertise themselves as located in Mdina, when in fact they are outside the city gates of Mdina.
Furthermore, Casa Del Tesoriere is the only detached property in Mdina, that sits isolated in the middle of Mdina's Bastion Square - a tourist hotspot in the heart of Mdina.
Given size, layout and ability to host a large number of guests, it is ideal for team building/work retreats! The 5 bedrooms can comfortably host up to 10 guests. We can even host up to 12 guests with a variety of single folding beds in 2 bedrooms (see photos for more information).
Typical of these beautiful historic buildings, the ground floors date back as far as the 14th centuries and their slightly older first floors built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The majority of the property was built 300 years ago, features of the building date back even further (500 years plus).
Casa Tel Tesoriere has undergone significant renovations in the past three years, in order to ensure a property capable of comfortably hosting a large number of guests. Most recently - we've installed air conditioners in the majority of the bedrooms.
For potential guest's convenience, here is a general description of the layout of the house.
This is one of the most picturesque properties in Mdina, and directly overlooks Mdina’s Bastion Square. Unique, in that it is the only detached property in Mdina, it has been lavishly furnished to be offered on the short-term lets market.
This property comprises of an entrance hallway, with an art-nouveau inspired dining room on one side, and a fully furnished kitchen (with all modern appliances including a toaster, hobs/burner/fridge-freezer and kettle) on the other side.
Additional rooms on the ground floor include an ensuite (with shower, sink and W.C.) double bedroom (air-conditioned), and a hybrid conservatory-style dining room both with direct access to our sunny and pleasant garden.
The large and colourful garden is centred around our hybrid pond/pool. This shallow-depth, jet-powered pond/pool with only COLD water is designed to refresh our guests during the hot summer months. It is a repurposed pond, therefore is not the largest.
Also located on the ground floor is a small W.C.
Halfway up the majestic staircase leading to the first floor is a bedroom, with 2 single beds. This characterful room has a large bronze background, along with a large mirror creating a very unique ambiance. An additional single folding bed can be placed here.
The first floor consists of another two double bedrooms (both air-conditioned).
The first double bedroom, enjoys an ensuite (shower, sink and W.C.) and has access to a separate balcony overlooking the garden.
The other double bedroom is styled in an art-nouveau manner. Exactly adjacent to this bedroom (though not ensuite) is a family-style bathroom (which includes both a shower, and a bath, and a W.C.). An additional single folding bed can be placed here.
There is also another balcony, accessible from the first floor hallway, that overlooks the garden. Another excellent spot for a quick lunch in the sun.
Arguably the pièce de résistance of the entire property (though one may legitimately claim that the garden is the highlight of this palazzo) is the similarly imposing and impressive drawing room/Sala Nobile (serving as a living, dining and study area) that overlooks Mdina’s Bastion Square. With numerous chandeliers, an indoor fire place (for DECORATION purposes only), imposing bookshelves, and a large table that serves as an ideal workstation. The Sala also enjoys a quaint balcony overlooking the square - perfect to breathe in the morning air whilst enjoying your coffee!
The upper levels of the property consist of a separate shower-room, and a final double bedroom which is on the top floor of the property. Access to the roof is NOT permitted.
We cannot stress the unique nature of this Palazzo.
We will do our utmost to ensure that you will enjoy your stay in Mdina.
Guest access
Guests will have access to fans and heaters.
A washing machine along with an ironing board are available for guest's use.
Linen and towels are provided.
There is Wi-Fi available in most parts of the property. Given the large layout of the palazzo, some areas do not have access to Wi-Fi. It is at its strongest on the first floor - particularly in the impressive drawing room/Sala Nobile (serving as a living, dining and study area)
We can also provide a child's cot and a maid's service should you request such services.
Taxi and airport services can be also be provided for and/or arranged. There is free parking available just outside the city gates (a 2-3 minute walk from the property), and we can obtain a non-transferrable parking permit for ONE vehicle for our guests, after the first 24 hours of their arrival in our property.
Should any guest require anything in particular - please let us know. We live close-by and will do our best to help.
Other things to note
For people that book for a few nights we are happy to prepare a small welcome package with some traditional food and drinks from Malta including a local wine favoured by the locals. We genuinely hope that you enjoy your stay at Tesoriere and will do our best to accommodate anything you request.
Environmental Contribution Payment - The Government of Malta has recently introduced a charge that is liable on all guests staying at all types of accommodation. All revenue generated from this initiative will be directed solely and exclusively to upgrade and embellish the local infrastructure in touristic areas around the Maltese Islands. The contribution is payable by all tourists/guests who are 18 years or older on the day of arrival. It amounts to €0.50c per person for each night spent at our accommodation. The contribution is capped at a maximum of €5 for each continuous stay. We are obliged to collect this contribution and then pass it onto the Government. An official and government-issued ‘Notice to Guests’ will be available at the property that further explains the environmental contribution and the reason for this charge. The exact sum due will be determined during your stay, and I once again apologise for the inconvenience.
WiFi - given the huge nature of the property, WiFi is not available in all corners of the property. The router is located in the living, dining and study area, and is strongest in these surrounding areas.
The property does not have Air Conditioning.
The hybrid pond/pool is of a small size and a shallow depth, and doesn't produce hot water. It is a repurposed pond.
The property is NOT a party property. Mdina is a quiet and small town, and we intend to keep it that way.
The internal fire place is for decorational purposes ONLY.
There is free parking available just outside the city gates (a 2-3 minute walk from the property), and we can obtain a non-transferrable parking permit for ONE vehicle for our guests, after the first 24 hours of their arrival in our property.

This house is just a wow from top to bottom.
The house itself just oozes history and has been maintained, decorated and updated in a completely sympathetic manner.
We were a family of 6 (should have been 7 but there was no issue with changes at the last minute) All the rooms were a good size for the whole family, large well equipped kitchen and upstairs salon.
The bedrooms were a good size with fabulous bathrooms all round, and plenty of towels.
The garden was a complete oasis in the middle of the city and the little pool was perfect for cooling off. Don't expect to be bombing or floating on your lilo. but it was still perfect for us.
The location cannot be beaten for access to restaurants, bars and ice cream shops. Not to mention all the historic sites within Mdinas walls.
The hosts are fantastic and nothing was too much trouble for them. Joanna even managed to arrange a car pass at very short notice. Andrea was a complete oracle on all things Mdina.
Thanks from all of the family.

It took me a long time to find somewhere to stay in Malta as I wanted a character house- and this was ideal. It was very spacious and filled with the charm I was after. It was on a lovely square in Medina with an excellent icecream shop opposite.
This is clearly a historic property so a couple of the rooms were a bit rough and ready- but my sons loved the little pool and the bedroom at the top of a spiral staircase. The owner was extremely responsive and it was a pleasant surprise to arrive to fresh bread, milk, fruit and cold beer in the fridge!
