About this cottage rental
Such a unique soundfront retreat with so many extras including a private dock, large pool and detached guesthouse! Pelican Point offers amazing sunset views over the sound and over an acre of outdoor space partially shaded by majestic live oaks, cedars and a large fig tree. Direct sound access, a large grassy area for rigging and a boardwalk to a spacious private soundfront dock and more than 500 feet of shoreline make for a watersports paradise, whether kiteboarding, windsurfing, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, paddle boarding or sailing. Or just relax on the dock's large seating area and watch all the kiteboarders who launch and land at the Salvo Day Use Area - a great soundfront beach with shallow water for kids and watersports that's a quick walk, sail or paddle away. And if your thoughts turn to the ocean it's an easy walk or drive to Salvo's wide and un-crowded sandy beaches for a day of surfing, fishing, shelling or just relaxing in the sun!
After a fantastic day on the water come home for a dip in the private soundfront pool or 6-person hot tub to watch an amazing sunset over the sound; or relax with a game of pool in the guesthouse or corn hole on the lawn. A huge fig and live oak canopy provides ample shade to while the day away with a good book in the hammock and shady spots for the tots to play.
The main cottage allows easy access for all including seniors and handicapped, with one-level living, a ramp to the back door, and a bathroom with large accessible shower. It features a large and well-equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances and views over the pool to the sound, a dining area that seats 12, and washer & dryer. The sunny living room has spectacular sound views and a 42" smart TV with Netflix, Pandora etc.
The cottage has 4 bedrooms including two masters. Bedroom 1 is a master with a king bed, flat-screen 26" TV, large bathroom with a handicapped accessible shower, and stunning views over the pool to the wetlands and sound. Bedroom 2 is a master with a queen bed and bathroom with bath and shower, and large windows with views of the sun rising through the cedars. Bedroom 3 has a queen bed and sliding glass doors to a brick patio on the soundside, and bedroom 4 has two sets of bunks (4 twin beds). Bedrooms 3 and 4 are by the hall bathroom which has a bath and shower.
The cozy detached guesthouse is about 30 feet from the cottage (on the other side of the pool) via a walkway and ramp and has a part-covered deck with porch swing, adirondack chairs and amazing wetland and sound front views - a great place to watch the many birds that visit, the kiteboarders speeding by or the breathtaking sunsets. Inside there is a game room with pool table and 32" flat-screen TV with DVD / Netflix / Pandora, and a wet bar with full-size refrigerator / icemaker, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There is also a media room (which doubles as a second living room) with a large sectional sofa with fold-out full bed (labeled living room 1 in photo descriptions), and 42" flat-screen TV with DVD, Netflix, Pandora etc. The guesthouse also features one cozy bedroom with a queen bed, and a bathroom with shower.
Pelican Point is a traditional Hatteras cottage that has been fully updated, but without losing the simple island charm reminiscent of the more remote Ocracoke Island, where live oaks stand watch over one-story cottages and small family cemeteries that tell the story of the island. In fact the cottage is built by the site of the traditional homestead and resting place of some of the original settlers in the area. Their homestead lasted hundreds of years on the high ground by the live oaks, with the land where Pelican Point now stands serving as the family farm and route to the wetlands and sound for hunting and fishing. Although the original homestead has made way for development, some of the descendants still live near Pelican Point and are great neighbors with wonderful stories to tell!
To help make your stay as enjoyable and relaxed as possible, we have teamed with Dawn Waldrop a premier property manager and owner of Black Dog Harbor Services (BDHS), based next door to Pelican Point. BDHS will clean and prepare Pelican Point for your arrival; provide bed linens and make the beds; and stock the house with an initial supply of paper towels, toilet paper, dish detergent and trash bags to get you started. BDHS is just a phone call away to take care of any problems or concerns during your stay!
Well-behaved Adult dogs (maximum of two) are welcome with payment of non-refundable pet fee ($250 per dog, per stay). No puppies - meaning no dogs under 1 year.

We spent a week in Salvo with our grown children and their significant others. Dawn from Black Dog was great. We didn’t really have any issues but she was quick to respond to any questions/concerns we had. The sound was BEAUTIFUL. We fished and kayaked. it was a very relaxing week.

The location was great. The dock, pool, and view into the sound were wonderful. Also, the responsiveness of the team was great when we had an issue or a question.
However, the house is old and the wear and tear are showing. To note, we did discuss returning to the same home in the future. The management did assure me some of these things they would be correcting in the future.
From the start of our trip little things went oddly. The house was warm upon entry and the temp seemed to stay the same for a long period of time. Luckily, we are pretty savvy and were able to correct the issue ourselves (5 closed vents). From there we had other little hurdles, like the smoke alarm battery dying and going off every 5 minutes. Or the air filter from the house, not being cleaned/changed out in quite some time (which we changed in relation to the temp of the home, believing that may be part of the issue). We also had an incident where upon immediately sitting on an outside plastic chaise lounge, it broke (person weighs 150lbs soaking wet). Dresser in the bunk room not being properly secured (screws missing for wall attachment), toilets rocking and leaking, tub/drain stopper not working to give a baby a bath. Also, seals on the back door were damaged and allowing flies to get between the door and bottom of the door frame (even some water came in during the tropical storm). Some dock/deck boards could use replacing, as well as, the wooden chair on the guest house.

Great property with so much to do on site. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend! The sunsets are amazing! We really enjoyed all the wildlife down by the dock.

The rental was pleasant. We had a few frustrations, but below are the pros and cons.
Pros:
-Great proximity to the beach
-The property's dock is a fantastic amenity
-Same with the pool and 'mother-in-law' house
-Check-in was pretty smooth. Other than an email going to the spam folder (not the manager's fault), they called me about what I still needed to get settled, and we did it the day of, thankfully!
Cons:
-The 9 am check out was a little rough, with several adults and small kids
-Bring laundry and dish soap if you plan on needing it
-Aside from washing the sheets, you must make the place pretty clean before leaving for the 9 am checkout. It just adds to the rush of getting out the door.
I would stay there again, but I think it's fair to let you know what to expect when making your packing or grocery lists!

My family and I had a great time at the house. It was the perfect size for our party of 8. The house was clean and cozy as well as the guest house. Communicating with the management company was top notch. They gave you information about all you can do and rent in the area. We loved that the house was on the outskirts of the OBX and not by all the touristy/congestion areas. It made for a peaceful trip. The pool and hot tub were great. We spent much of our time in them. The beach is nice but if you have lots of beach gear, young kids or older adults I would suggest taking a short drive to South Beach Lane where there was beach parking as opposed to walking. This information was provided by the management in the welcome email. There was no lifeguard on this section of beach so that was a little nerve wracking for me as mom with two young kids who love the water. The house offers crab traps that we used to catch some crabs. The dock was great to sit and watch the sunrise/sunset. My kids enjoyed watching the kite surfers come by. The house came with your basic starter needs. The Blue Whale store was a short walk to get all your basic supplies. I would suggest going to Alex’s Shrimp Shack right by the house for fresh fish/shrimp. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the house. I would recommend this house if you’re looking for a place to relax and unwind.

Great location. Great amenities. Kayaks, pool, hot tub, large yard, pool table, corn hole. Guest house was a plus. Salvo is not too busy which was nice for us. But close to day trip activities. Watching Avon's community fireworks on the beach is something the grandkids will always remember. Even our dog had a great time.

This was the perfect place for my husband, me and my three adult children with their spouses. There was more than enough room. We also brought two dogs. The property was exactly as described and the manager checked in often. The pier was wonderful and the sunsets were beautiful. I hope to stay again in the future.

Great location, kids loved the pool. No gas for the gas grill and the shrubbery by the driveway needs a serious cutback so as to not scratch your car coming and going. New rope needed for the crab pot it snapped on us but the kids had a great time catching and releasing crabs.

Enjoyed our stay very comfortable home. Loved the pool and dock for crabbing and fishing. Beaches were close to walk to.The only thi g was the property bay beach was really not a swimming area. That was the only disappointing thing. The houses and area was great would recommend pelican point to friends.Had a great vacation!

Very nice main house and cute little cottage on the sound side. Great pier where everyone liked to walk and enjoy the sunsets. Not far from the beach at all. We had a baby and the playpen and high chair were very helpful. Everything we needed was provided. Everyone loved the pool and hot tub as well. Some non stick pans would have been helpful. Great stay and great place. Would stay again.

This is an amazing place. The ocean, the sound, and the pool, all in one place. Great dinners at the sound. Great fishing and crabbing. The store and kayak rental 5 minutes walk away. Short walk to the ocean. The house and guesthouse are convenient and versatile. There are many bathrooms, rooms, and living space. Everything you need is there. Guest house is an awesome bonus and had a pool table. Super nice, although older, house.
The only couple of things I'd change: the couches are starting to get sticky. Also there were only 2 toilet paper rolls for 5 bathrooms, no soap, and no dishwasher or washing machine liquids, and the local stores were out of the latter. For a 1k a day the last thing I want is to drive around the island in search of dishwasher powder.... At any place we rented in the past some years, these things already come standard. And I imagine the lack of dishwasher liquid explains why the dishes are not super clean as well. The accessible bathroom shower is broken.
But these are small things, considering. Kids are dying to come back, too! :) Thanks!

We had a lovely two week stay at Pelican Point and were charmed by the location, privacy, quiet and beauty of the place. The two houses were comfortable and convenient, all rooms on one level so no schlepping groceries and bags up numerous flights of stairs. Marsh grass between the houses and the water was home to swallows and red winged black birds and we had a resident loon who fished near our dock every day. We loved spending time on the deck of the smaller guesthouse with our morning tea, binocs to view birds, and a good book. We brought two kayaks and a small sailboat and really appreciated the convenience of the dock and the large deck at the end for beautiful sunset views with drinks and food. The swimming pool, hot tub and pool table were nice amenities and the walk to the ocean beach an easy 10-15 minutes only. We made many happy memories this summer and look forward to coming back soon!

This was our first sound side stay in Salvo. E have always been Oceanside for the many years we have been coming to OBX. The house was unique. It was secluded with beautiful sound views. The pool was spectacular and spacious for our group of 9. We absolutely loved the long sound dock and enjoyed fishing off of it and sitting and enjoying the views. I rented a kayak and a SUP for the week for the teens in our group and they loved going out and exploring the sound. Launching from the dock was very easy. The porch on the guest house was a great outdoor gathering spot in the AM to enjoy our coffee. The boys in our group were just a little disappointed that the basketball hoop was broken and unavailable as they love basketball, but there was no shortage of other activities for them. The final day we were there, the temp and humidity were very high. The AC struggled a bit with the weather. It was not unmanageable, but not as cold as some AC we have had in the past. We absolutely loved the house and it had plenty of room for all of us to spread out and truly relax. I would recommend this property for any who loves starting sound side or someone who wants to try sound side! It was a great vacation!

One level was great, pool and hot tub were nice. Long dock over marsh to the water had a table and sitting area at the end. Great area for kayak or windsurfing. Crabbing would be great here later in the year but I went in May.

The house and cottage were perfect for our extended family of 10 -- including grandparents, kids and grandkids. Loved having our own pool, especially since the periodic rain kept us from walking regularly to the beach across the road. The private dock was an ideal place to pass the time, sit and talk and enjoy the breezes across the sound (as well as a great launching spot for kayaks). Having a separate cottage was nice...afforded some extra privacy at times, and the pool table was in almost constant use. Games and puzzles and things to do indoor when the weather did not cooperate. The area itself was a nice contrast to the crowded, busy communities to the north. All in all, a lovely place to spend a week reconnecting with family. We can all see ourselves returning!

Great house, pool house, everything was great but could use some kitchen stuff updated.

This property is like a small compound. Between the guest house, dock, pool, & main house, there is plenty of room for families!

I picked this property for two reasons...first and most importantly, it was advertised as “accessible”. Second that it wasn’t one of the huge, fancy-schmancy outer banks places. It’s an old school beach cottage, just what we were looking for!
As for being accessible...my elderly father has ALS. He isn’t in a wheel chair yet, he does have very limited mobility. The ramps were perfect for his walker. The king bedroom has a roll-up sink, raised toilet with hand rails and a nice big shower with rails, a seat and a very small step in.
Here are the positive things I noticed about the property...the views over the sound are to die for. The hot tub was a perfect temp and nice and clean. While we didn’t use the pool (still too chilly in early May) it looked clean and fresh. The beds are very comfortable! The dining table is a great size for large groups. We spent several evenings sitting around the table playing board games. The kitchen is well equipped. There is a well stocked “grocery” in the closest gas station. Don’t be fooled...it looks tiny, but there’s everything you could need in there.
There were a few negatives. The tv remote didn’t work (after the first time we turned it on) and the buttons on the tv didn’t work either. We left it on the whole time we were there and finally unplugged it on check out day to turn it off. The dryer tripped the breaker several times. We were bummed that there were no beach chairs in the pool house or spices in the kitchen.
Some maintenance issues...the toilet seat lid in the guest house was quite loose. The tub stopper in the middle queen room wouldn’t stay up so the tub would fill while showering.
A few suggestions....handrails for the hot tub would make it more accessible. My dad didn’t feel comfortable even trying to get in or out of it. A rubber bath mat is needed for the accessible shower. Very slippery! The center “grassy” area would make a great spot for a putting green.
My biggest issue...an earlier checkout for “extra covid cleaning” should mean a super clean place. We saw several live roaches and when I had to move a couch to get a fallen puzzle piece there was a lot of dirt and dead bugs.
Despite some fussy issues, we truly had an amazing time at pelican point. It was the perfect size with separate areas for the adults and teens. Our teens loved having the guest house to themselves! Sitting on the porch and out on the pier make this place ideal! Owner was super responsive.

The house is just right in its layout and size. The guest house was a perfect office for those of us who had to sneak off and work. The hot tub was great fun; the pool looked fabulous, but it was too cold for us to swim (mid-April). The dock and boardwalk through the marsh is a stunning place to marvel at the sunset every evening. And with only a 5-minute walk to the ocean on the other side of the street, we had everything we could ever want! It was a wonderful family holiday!
