About this house rental

Positioned on the outskirts of the busy and popular village of Blackheath is a historic home significant to the Wood Family. Based on the love for a small European town, the original owners named their home, Rostherne.

Initially built in the late 1800s, this remarkable home full of history and memories has remained in the same family for over 120 years and is now used as a peaceful holiday home for all family members and friends. Rostherne sits proudly on secluded 7 acres looking across its significant bushland, full of beautiful flora to explore. Rostherne is the ideal place to get away and explore the Blue Mountains and its charm.

Much of Rostherne has been left in the manner it was many decades ago however you may notice a few modernised spaces that have been restored to increase comfort for guests. As you enter through the front entrance of Rostherne, you are welcomed by the spacious kitchen that has been pleasantly updated to be a functional and well-equipped space for entertaining friends and family. Basic utensils and simple appliances are supplied to make cooking a breeze during your stay. Step back in time and capture Rostherne’s original charm with the old fashioned and decorative woodburning oven and cooktop.

At front of house, adjacent to the kitchen is a hidden, snug bedroom. Fitted with a double bed, blissful view out to window to the front garden, plenty of storage for guests’ belongings and a space to curl up and read one of Rostherne’s many books on display.

Separate to the kitchen is a cosy, intimate sitting/dining room where guests can relax by the slow burning wood fire set whilst watching the television. Come dinner time, room to gather around the dining table to enjoy a freshly cooked meal after a long day exploring Blackheath and its surrounds.

The narrow hallway guides you through to the sleeping quarters. At the end of the hallway, you will find two (2) homey bedrooms, both with Queen beds. The main bedroom (to the right) has large windows that look out onto the peaceful veranda and garden. As you may pick from the large bookshelf full of old books, this room was originally Mr Wood’s Study. The second Bedroom (to the left) is quite roomy with natural light bursting in from the large floor to ceiling window. There is also plenty of space to store belongings during your stay.

The end of the house past the narrow storerooms is the Wood Family Drawing Room where families can socialise by the charming and functional woodburning fireplace or be entertained by playing an energetic game of Table Tennis. If Table tennis is not your scene, a range of board games, puzzles as well as a Chess set is left out for a less active leisure whilst looking out onto the airy and gorgeous front garden.

External access to recently renovated bathrooms, One with a minimal shower and original bathtub. A separate wash closet with an additional shower.

The veranda that wraps around half of the exterior of the property is the perfect place to watch the wildlife and capture the picturesque views Rostherne has to offer. If you are feeling adventurous, spend your time exploring the overgrown surrounding gardens and mysterious bush tracks that have been created over time, you may even come across the old tennis court!

House was clean, easy to find and great for groups. The decor and general vibe of the house is quite creepy after dark.

Our stay at this property was an adventure filled with intrigue and history. The sheer size of the place amazed us, and its fascinating backstory added to the charm. However, being old, it did have its quirks. For those who aren't fond of spiders, be warned, we encountered a few, including some rather intimidating funnel web spiders. Despite this, the cozy living room with its fireplace provided a warm retreat, and we enjoyed relaxing evenings by the fire. The bathrooms are renovated but inconveniently located outside, so nighttime bathroom visits were cold and uncomfortable. Additionally, it was disappointing that the pool table was locked up, as we were eager to play a game or two. Overall, our stay was memorable, with a mix of both delights and surprises.

Nothing in the description was inaccurate but there were some quirks to Rostherne that were heavily understated. It’s a magnificent testament to its history and the Woods family set in intriguing grounds but it’s not really a country stay. The place smelt musty and old, and although the beds and bathroom (external) were clean the rest of the place was tired and in need of a makeover. The warnings not to touch this and that were excessive and made me feel a little unwelcome. Not a place for kids, and the temptation of the locked snooker table verged on cruel. It is very peaceful and the one working fireplace was a lovely distraction. I can’t recommend the place unless you’re keen for an experience deep in the past. The hosts were responsive and sincere.
