Perfect place to stay in the center of Arequipa, with the garden which is a little paradise, nice hosts and great service. The hotel is made of Sillar, a beautiful and thick rock, which makes the noise isolation great, the insulation too, but can limit the wifi speed in some rooms (if you go there for work, tell them, they will give you a room where the network is perfect).

La Casa de Melgar is in a beautiful old building. Breakfast, with a selection of fruit, juices, yoghurt, bread as well as ham, cheese and eggs is served in a boring area, although you can have it in the beautiful garden. The rooms have very high ceilings which can turn the room quite chilly in the evening (there is no heating, so make sure that the sun warms up the room during the day)
The shower is good, but unfortunately too much water was spilled before it was warm/hotthe area is quite close to the Plaza de Armas and Santa Catalina monastery and next door is a great pizzeria and close by are a coffee house/Biergarten and very good laundrette.
Staff was just amazing.

Beautiful property and convenient location. Noisy because of thin walls.

Loved the atmosphere at this unique hotel. The rooms were designed around the colonial stone architecture, and the community breakfast nook in the courtyard/garden was a beautiful, tranquil oasis with flowers and hummingbirds, and tasty eggs to order. The gentleman at the front desk was very helpful to arrange transportation.

Loved this older hotel. One of the rooms did not have much light and the water pressure was low. Our other room didn’t have this problem.

This was an excellent room (expect tasteful bare stone walls and original furniture) with a large, clean bathroom. The property offers a fantastic range at breakfast, which is served within the beautiful grounds. Highly recommended.

Check in was fine but it looked like the front desk guy checked the bathroom just then to see if it was OK. He thought it was but it wasn't. In addition to the old condition of the towels, gray and tattered, there was actually what looked like blood splattered on one. The sheets looked mostly clean, very small pillows, but on the cover there were many stains and hairs on the inner layers of covers. Yes we could have asked to switch rooms or have it fixed but it was the end of a long travel day and we were exhausted. Bring a pack towel and shower slippers and check your room thoroughly. We checked out a day early.

The hotel was in a great location being only a short walk to the plaza de armas, the monastery (must see!) and restaurants and shops. The hotel is very old, which we absolutely loved! The character was amazing and the grounds were beautiful with a garden to view during breakfast. The hotel staff were excellent! We loved that we chose to stay here and would definitely return if we ever have a chance to in the future :)

They accommodated my 5 am arrival but with a lot of grumbling. I know that an early check in is not always expected, and I did appreciate it, however, arriving at 5 or6 am to Puno seemed to be the norm. The staff did not speak any English nor try to accommodate my limited Spanish. I didn't think they were very friendly - only friendly when they wanted to sell me an overpriced tour. The hot water was limiting- I let the shower run for 10 mins before I even got a little bit of heat in the water. My room was suppose to have city views and instead I had a view of the hotel stairway. The breakfast is super minimal- bread, cheese, hot beverage. They freaked out when a friend came up to my room to use the banos. The manager eyed me suspiciously each time I came to the hotel. It is not conveniently located to any of the limited sights in Puno.

Beatiful hotel - charming architecture, good basic breakfast with eggs, cereal, fresh fruit tea and coffee overlooking the garden. We loved our room 204- it was on top floor at one end with a sunny terrace. Loved the vaulted ceilings in the large room with its 3 foot thick walls and wooden interior shutters- quiet and dark. Lovely. Steps away from the old town with its noise and traffic congested roads yet you step inside the hotel and suddenly it's serene, quiet and the air feels fresh. The beds were also comfortable and the shower nice and hot.

Great lication near main historic plaza. Service was average (only Peruvians I have met who didn't smile) but the room and hotel uniqueness and location more than made up for it!

La Casa de Melgar Hostal is a good value. They have complimentary breakfast and free wi-fi.
The buildings look original and the aesthetics make this hostel feel like it's part of the monastery. It's got a almost whimsical feel.
The bathroom needs updating. We had to turn the sink faucet a couple times just to get a little water to come out. For the shower, it took about 10 minutes of running the water in order to get hot water to come out. And, the toilet flush button got jammed, which resulted in a constant sound of running water.
The room itself was moderately sized. There weren't a lot of outlets in the room, so we had to unplug the TV and bedside lamp in order to charge our phones and camera batteries. As for the bed, it didn't look like it would be comfortable as the mattress was rather thin, but I was able to sleep fairly well.
Beware, if you stay here, don't let the wool blanket touch your skin. Two of my friends I traveled with made that mistake and had bug bites in the morning. I don't think they were bed bugs, but possibly mite bites or something else.
This hostel could be great if they improve the facility a little bit and clean their blankets better.

This Hostel is a real gem. Staff speaks English and is manned 24 hrs a day. The hostel is like a home with internal courtyards and full of atmosphere. It is next to a fantastic Italian trattoria which happen to be a new business opened 2 weeks ago. It is run by brother and sister team. The brother bakes and makes fresh pasta daily and the sister cooks. Quite a team. Fornellino trattoria is a real winner.

This place was beautiful and artistic. You step bacon time with enormous ceilings and grand doors & windows. It is more of a boutique place, you will not feel like you are in the holiday inn! The staff was helpful and courteous, they even changed out our TV because the reception was poor on the channel we wanted! the place is located just a 3 min walk from the "hub" of entertainment-enjoy!
