TIPS
We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the wonderful towns around the lake. Como city is the urban center of the area, but the towns are gems with splendid villas by the lake. To travel and stroll around Lake Como, especially in the small towns, it is necessary to wear comfortable shoes. There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink unless otherwise indicated. Tap water is also drinkable. You can bring your refillable bottle with you! If you are looking for a relatively easy hike in the area and still want to enjoy the mountain views, the Greenway del Lago di Como is an easy-to-follow trail that connects the lakeside towns from Colonno to Griante and does not require much climbing. A bus will take you to the starting point in Colonno. You can hike from Como to Brunate or vice versa; there are two routes, and it takes about an hour. Look for traditional restaurants where you can taste local foods, such as dishes based on Lake Como fish. In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services close in the middle of the day, so be sure to plan your purchases accordingly. Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. For those who wish to immerse themselves in the water, however, there are some options. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is mostly discouraged and often prohibited. There are beaches in other lakeside locations. A nice little beach awaits you in Careno. Please note that it may be crowded on weekends. Locals and visitors also love to go to Nesso, where the bravest swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall. The Lido of Bellagio and the pebble beach of San Giovanni await those who want to travel and explore the beautiful town of Bellagio, located at the center of the two branches of Lake Como. Lake Como is located in a mountainous region. The surrounding pre-Alps may not seem very high, but the climate is still influenced by the nearby mountains, and temperatures can change quickly. Pay particular attention to weather conditions during hikes and bring warm and waterproof clothing!
