About this house rental
Newbury Neck is a 9 mile peninsula. Gray Cottage is 8 miles out set on a 90 acre plot with Union River Bay on one side, and Morgan Bay on the other. For 3 generations, the family has protected this land from development and gifted through a trust, the blueberry fields that slope down to the ocean and that look upon the mountains of Acadia. Especially in the autumn, these mountains glow with deep reds, orange, and gold. RATES DISCOUNTED AFTER SEPTEMBER 17.
Gray Cottage by the Sea has an exquisite "back shore" private beach on Morgan Bay that you can walk to through a mile or so wooded path. On the front side of the property you have blueberry barrens and in the distance the mountains of Acadia National Park and the wide expanse of Union River Bay with views of Bartlett and Black Island.
Opportunities for kayaking, hiking, biking, and walking abound. There are also private charters, fishing trips, and whale watching opportunities.
The cottage has a generous front deck facing the water, and a lovely side porch that's perfect for 3 seasons due to screen and glass options.
This is a charming, beautifully maintained home with a private location on the coast of Maine.
Newbury Neck is an area where many homes and cottages have been in families for several generations and the area has a rich cultural history. With the lively village of Blue Hill nearby and the town of Ellsworth just a short distance, any amenity, restaurant or shop is never far away. Day trips to Bar Harbor, Brooklin, Stonington, Deer Isle, Camden are terrific way to spend a rainy day or to indulge arts, crafts, shopping and dining out.
To keep Newbury Neck extra special, many individuals have donated some of their land and put into the Land Conservancy which helps maintain the rustic beauty of the area with its commanding views of the mountains of Acadia National Park for "all" to enjoy. Exploring nature up close, walking, beach-combing, swimming and kayaking are all right here for you to enjoy.
A lovely public sandy beach for swimming and sunbathing is just down the road 3 miles or so, as is Perry's Lobster Shack- the only outdoor dockside dining in Surry.
Grey Cottage is a newer cottage that reflects an earlier era. It has 19th Century stone walls and gardens that are of the period and have been maintained to complement this charming 3 bedroom, 2 full bath cottage which sleeps 6.
This is a pet free cottage.

For those like us that enjoy a little seclusion, peace and quiet you will love this place. It was a great break from the day to day. Amazing views, and beautiful property. Only 20 minutes to Ellsworth and about an hour from Bar Harbor. We did several trip to Acadia and enjoyed some amazing hikes. The back beach is a wonderful private escape and the hike to get there is magical. A great spot for our family of five (three grown boys).

This house was just perfect for a friends and family stay in the Fall. Walk to Morgan Bay, walk across the field to Union River Bay, walk to the local cemetery. Close proximity to a gem of a local library, a well-stocked grocery store, a wine store, and plenty of lobster. Hosts were attentive and responsive. House had everything we needed. Sitting on the east facing deck in the morning and evening was the highlight. Very special.

This cottage was perfect for my husband and I (and our teenage grandson part of the time). Loved the decor, views, path to the private beach in back, searching for sea glass, watching the car headlights as they drive down Cadillac Mountain at dark, the wild turkeys and deer, front deck was our favorite hang-out but also loved gathering around the kitchen table. I really can't image staying anywhere else.

What a lovely property! Such a gorgeous location that was completely private and secluded. We enjoyed the sunrise every morning sitting out on the front porch watching wild turkeys and deer walk across the lawn. The property was well maintained and did not disappoint. The walk to your private beach was enjoyable. We visited several small towns all within an hour or two from your location including Acadia National Park and Bat Harbor. This girl‘s trip was amazing and we will return!!! Thank you for accommodating us and for making our trip extra special.

Our family had the most incredible week in Surry. The house was clean with a well stocked kitchen. With trails nearby, access to a private beach and lots of wildlife around, this was the perfect place to be as active or lazy as you want to be. Highly recommend!!

We chose this cottage based on the chance for our kids to be able to get outside and explore. That they did! We enjoyed the open green space, the view, the private beach, the quiet and the beautiful smell of lilac in the air. We took advantage of what we couldn't do back home, so we were busy. The cottage was a perfect, comfortable and clean place to come back to and rest.

My husband and I just spent the week at this lovely cottage. The location is so quiet. We enjoyed sitting on the deck listening to the birds and taking in the view. We are familiar with mid coast Maine and so found this location to be convenient for visiting Blue Hill, Brooklin, Buck's Harbor, Northeast Harbor and Seal Harbor. Perry's Lobster Shack was just down the road. The lupine were in full bloom everywhere and a walk to the end of the road offered the best balsam fragrance! The cottage was appointed with guests in mind. Lots of thoughtful touches to make our stay convenient. I especially appreciated the lack of decorative clutter which offered plenty room for us to spread out for the week. Dee, the owner, was thoughtful and helpful. We would recommend this cottage to anyone wanting to explore the midcoast but also to anyone looking for a place to rest.

We picked this property over others because of one picture...the path to the beach. I could just imagine it covered with fall leaves and it didn't disappoint. Quiet and cozy, the cottage provide a place to enjoy beautiful sunrises on the porch and sunsets on the beach. We walked through the field in front of the house everyday and to the beach every evening. It was all we thought it would be and more. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Very charming home with everything you need for a visit. Beautiful sunrises over Union Bay and mesmerizing sunsets over Morgan Bay all without leaving the property! Wildlife visits morning and night. A great place to relax.

Ocean view cottage exceeded all our expectations. We were so incredibly comfortable and cozy inside the house. It felt like home , and one I was not ready to leave after a week! The most well equipped rental ever! The property is absolutely beautiful. The view from the front porch is perfect for watching the sun rise as you enjoy the serenity. What at treat to have a path in the back to walk on to the beach and explore.
A perfect location to take trips to Acadia and Bar Harbor. Also, great hiking not only in ANP but also the trails near Blue Hill. True hidden gems!
Ease of check in and a property manager who was extremely available and communicative.
LOVED IT!!!

Our two families (four adults, two adult children) had an amazing two weeks at Grey Cottage. The house itself is a charming, comfortable, classic Maine cottage with all the modern amenities--and super clean. The view from the front porch across Union River Bay to Mount Desert was among the best we have ever seen in our twenty-plus years of coming to Maine. We spent hours on the porch every day drinking coffee and/or cocktails, reading, watching birds, soaking in the sun. One of the best features of the place is the back beach, a lovely 15-minute walk through the woods behind the house. It’s basically a private cove, perfect for swimming, sunning, watching birds and seals and even a dolphin (twice). The location of Grey Cottage is fantastic: an hour from Acadia, twenty minutes from Blue Hill and Ellsworth, on a super-quiet peninsula off a peninsula. Can’t say enough good things about this place.

Great Spot
We had an amazing week in Surry Maine! The house was even better than expected, the beds comfortable and everything imaginable was provided, even a Vitamixer!.
The private beach is not to be missed, spent many hours beach combing for sea glass and all kids of items. Please go to beach at sunset, it was beautiful and well worth the walk.
We hope to return VERY soon.

Couldn’t Be Better
My wife , Mom and I had never been to Coastal Maine before. What an incredible trip / stay at the Gray Cottage. The home , property is amazing ! Whether visiting Camden, Bangor , Surry , Ellsworth or Mt Desert and Acadia which all were convenient or enjoying the peace at “our home”, each day was perfect! The cleanliness, comfort and communication with Dee makes for a smooth transition. We were amazed with all the little things provided to make easier as well. We really enjoyed the hike down to the private area too Can’t wait to get back up there and make even more incredible memories !!

Perfect Stay
Our family was looking for a central spot to explore many of the beautiful locations Downeast. Gray Cottage was very comfortable, clean and supplied everything you need for your stay. Dee was incredibly helpful and checked in our needs regularly. We spent most mornings on the porch enjoying the beautiful view of the bay. The private beach in the back provided the best sunset photos. We would definitely return to the cottage in the future.

Beautiful location
The property setting is gorgeous. The pictures on line show it accurately but looks better in person. I often rent houses when I go on vacation and this house is better equipped than many I have stayed in before. The the sheets, towels and cookware is nice and something you would see in your own home. The owner and property manager care and were easy to contact. The only downside is that the house is about 45 to 1 hour from Bar Harbor and Arcadia. I knew this when booking and I wanted to be a little farther away to get away from the tourist area. The beds were comfortable. I would stay again and recommend to others.

Perfect Maine vacation!
All I can say everything was perfect! The cottage location, amenities, furnishings, size and communication all were exceptional. The owner provided information for local restaurants and sights, that were very appreciated. The whole process was smooth and effortless from booking to packing up and leaving.

A get-away home I would want!
For anyone looking for the perfect Maine vacation spot, this home is it! With its view of Acadia National Park and the Ocean, as well as a walking trail to the other side of the pennensula, and the well stocked kitchen and sun porch, we were not wanting for any creature comfort. A 20 minute drive among the trees with ocean views and flocks of turkeys led us to Ellsworth and Blue Hill with great dining options. Laura was always very responsive to our questions. This was a great vacation spot!

Beautiful location - excellent accommodations
The area is simply beautiful. It is private, comfortable, and a perfect place to land after eating too much lobster, exploring the local towns or hiking in Acadia National Park. The apple trees on the property were a sweet surprise. Access to waterfront both in front and behind the property made for great private hikes. The surrounding natural acreage was loaded with wildflowers, butterflies, blueberry bushes. Drive slowly to avoid deer and wild turkeys! The property manager Laura went above and beyond to answer our questions promptly and provide local information on local attractions and restaurants. What a jewel of a place.

Lovely Summer Vacation at Gray Cottage!
I’ve been coming to this area of Maine for 28 years and it never disappoints. It is my happy place! This was my first time staying in Gray cottage and while it’s a newer construction than I’m used to (I love the rustic charm of very old houses), it was absolutely lovely. The views from the upstairs bedrooms can’t be beat and the place is very spacious! We really enjoyed the front deck for morning coffee too. My cousins were staying in the house next door (Berry Hill) so we spent lots of time there as well, another great rental!

Amazing Downeast Acadia Stay
If you are looking for a very quaint, clean, and well maintained cottage in a quiet area this home is for you. I just love this property! The views from the front deck are gorgeous! Don’t miss the sunrise while enjoying your morning tea! We took day trips and visited many of the charming villages such as Castine, Camden, Blue Hill, and Bar Harbor. Our trip to Acadia National Park was our most memorable event! Thank you Laura and Jim for sharing your lovely home with us and providing information and everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. We are so grateful for your thoughtfulness!!

So gorgeous
When we first arrived we could not find the place. Our gps sent us further down the road than necessary. I also did not realize there were two houses in the pictures, a gray house and a White House. We were in the gray one which I believe is the better of the two. The two bedrooms upstairs are very spacious, even with two queen beds each there is plenty of room. The house has everything you need. The view out the front was spectacular and as another viewer posted, you can walk down (there are stairs on the far right of the property) or you can follow the trail to the back shore (1/2 mile). Bring your bug spray for that one. The house is about 45 min from Acadia and about 25 min from Ellsworth which is the nearest town. The sun rose very early while we were there (4:30) and they don’t have any blackout curtains so the light definitely wakes you. Other than the early sunrise, I don’t think Inwould change a thing. It was wonderful.

A lovely Maine getaway
The Gray Cottage in Surry is a lovely getaway. Every morning we enjoyed the gorgeous sunrise over Cadillac Mountain. Behind the house is a path that takes you to the other side of the peninsula where we enjoyed beach combing and a sunset. It is very quiet and clean, and every detail was thought through and provided for- from trail guides to bug spray, comfortable beds and a well stocked kitchen.

Fabulous Find
We had a wonderful week in Maine! We had never used VRBO before and it was very easy. The house was exactly as described and very clean and accommodating. Both Laura and Lauri were so easy to communicate with and gave me great reccommendations when I asked. We had kayaks delivered right to the house and enjoyed lots of time paddling around the peninsula. The view from the front porch was amazing; a week just wasn't long enough! We will definitely be back for more.

Bucolic beauty and blueberries
This was the perfect house to stay in while visiting Maine. The location provides great access to ANP, but is remote enough to not be overwhelmed by visitors. With views this beautiful, you never want to sleep in and miss the sunrise.

Amazing views in a quiet setting
This cottage is perfect whether you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway or an active outdoor Maine experience! We enjoyed both! The spacious, well maintained cottage is inviting and had everything we needed to make our stay complete. With 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths, the cottage can comfortably accommodate several couples or an entire family. The views are amazing and the surroundings spectacular. The morning sunrises over Cadillac Mountain from the front deck are awesome. A short walk across the blueberry field in front of the cottage gave us a great close up view of Union Bay and an easy 15 minute hike down the wooded path behind the cottage ended at a private rocky beach with beautiful views of the back bay. Acadia National Park - the highlight of our trip - was a 35 minute drive from the cottage. We spent several days hiking in the park and enjoying the sights and food in nearby Bar Harbor. Laurie and Jim have thought of everything and provide a clean, homey, relaxing atmosphere for their guests. Our stay here made our Maine visit the best it could be! Thank you Laurie and Jim!

Comfortable ideal Maine vacay!
Everything was perfect for our group. The setting was the most impressive with views of lobsterman and sailboats cruising behind the enormous fields of wild blueberries in the front yard, and a 15 minute hike through a forest to your own private beach in the backyard. The kids couldn't get enough of the beach combing and crab hunting amongst the rocks and seaweed. The home was well kept and very cozy, providing everything we needed. It has comfortable beds and wonderful antique furniture that brought back memories of summers at grandmas. The bikes were awesome for cruising the Newbury neck road, which felt more like a bike path with all the residents out exercising or strolling the road. The blueberries were awesome in cereal, pancakes, and ice cream, and there are fields of them on the property! Acadia and Bar Harbor was a scenic 40 minute drive and must do. Sand Beach and the beehive were our highlights. Winter Harbor and Schoodic point was a similar and worthy outing. Blue Hill was 20 minutes and a beautiful town that offered everything you needed if the Surry store couldn't satisfy. Ellsworth felt like a city compared to everywhere else, Wal-Mart, strip malls and candlepin bowling! Thank you for sharing your wonderful and inviting home with us. It made the trip!

LOVELY, Well Maintained, Maine Coastal Property
We have rented this house many times since it was first built 18 years ago. We have also vacationed at the old farmhouse next door many times over the past 65 years, and sometime have family in both houses at the same time for larger gatherings. Both houses are as lovely as described and pictured and has always been very clean and well equipped. A lot of thought has clearly gone in to making the houses comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. In the gray house, the two large upstairs rooms are very large with windows on three sides, tons of light, and lots of good cross breezes. The master bedroom downstairs, though smaller, is also very nice. The kitchen and living room areas are also filled with light and feel open and airy. The front deck looks out to the water across a long sloping blueberry field and has an awning to give a bit of shade in the morning hours. An additional asset is the screened porch off to the side as it provides extra space for a card table for eating or playing games. Both the owner and the manager provided excellent customer service and are lovely, easy-to-deal-with people. When we vacation on the Neck, we spend a lot of time right around the property. There is a beautiful walk along a sun dappled path to the property's back beach for a private swim. It is about a fifteen to twenty minute stroll and the path can be found just behind the barn next door. If one tires of the view of the ocean in front or at the back beach, one need only take a long walk along the road, as there are many other beautiful views along the way. Perry's Lobster Shack is only three miles away and a great place to have lunch after a swim at the Carrying Place Beach (public), or to enjoy a leisurely lobster dinner out on the long pier as the sun goes down. Blue Hill is about 20 minutes away where one can explore small shops, try out a variety of restaurants, or go for a night of chamber music at Kniesel Hall. The Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery, in East Orland, has a wonderful fresh water place to swim. And Acadia or Deer Isle are both easily accessible for a longer day trip. As much as we enjoy some of these outings, we often find it hard to leave Newbury Neck, as the quiet, peaceful beauty of the place is hard to beat.

Exceeded expectations!
This house will exceed your expectations. It has an awesome view of Union River Bay and Cadillac Mountain from the front deck. The 3/4 mile walk to the “back bay “also offers an equally awesome view. You are in close proximity to many areas of interest, including Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, and numerous quaint coastal towns. Oh yes, and the lobsters!
The house itself is very cozy and welcoming. It is exceptionally clean and well stocked. Previous guests have left an interesting list of suggested destinations. Not only would I recommend this to a friend, I would go back in a heartbeat! We had no issues while we were there but we were left with a contact phone number if we needed assistance.
