About this cottage rental
Looking for a quiet vacation place to rent early summer or fall? We have the perfect place for you-- our family vacation cottage on the beautiful Maine coast. The cottage is located in Sorrento, Maine, a small lobstering village that sits on a peninsula on Frenchman’s Bay and looks across to the mountains of Acadia National Park that rise out of the sea.
Sorrento is located in Maine’s storied “Down East,” 13 miles west of the small city of Ellsworth and 25 miles from Bangor—about an 8-9 hour drive from the New York metro region or five hours from Boston--just far enough to get away from smog, noise and congestion and close enough to nature to hear the cries of gulls and loons, to sight bald eagles, osprey, foxes.
Still a bargain on the Maine coast, the cottage sleeps up to 8 people—two bedrooms containing two queen beds, a bunk room with two bunk beds, and two additional twin beds in the loft. It has two full baths, living and dining areas, kitchen with dishwasher, a deck overlooking the bay, a fireplace, and a wood stove for Spring and Fall. The house DOES NOT have central heat. Our wood-burning stove is excellent and can efficiently heat the entire house on chilly days. There is plenty of wood in the basement, along with a washer and dryer. The house is fully furnished, including a library and linens - all surrounded by trees and the bay.
Across the bay and a 40-minute drive is Mt. Desert Island, home to the jewel of our national park system, Acadia National Park, with its great hiking trails and a view of mountains, islands, and sea from every summit. Also located on MDI is the resort town of Bar Harbor with its myriad tourist attractions like whale watch tours, plays, concerts, restaurants, etc. Nearer still is Schoodic Peninsula, another part of Acadia National Park.
Don’t count out the early summer or fall. These are quieter times for those who crave a real rest and with global warming heating up the planet these times are becoming more desirable.
We rent from Sunday to Sunday on a weekly basis.

The cottage itself had a great array of books, puzzles and games, and many of the pieces hanging were made by the owner, family and friends.
Sorrento is off the mainstream of tourism which is nice. Wonderful for walking with views of Acadia NP along with friendly people.
A great stay!

A very comfortable house and quiet town. And Jay was really responsive to the questions we had.

We had a great stay at the cottage. It was clean and had everything needed to feel at home for the week. The location was convenient to the Schoodic peninsula. We would definitely stay here again.

Sorrento itself is a unique Maine village that feels that the real Maine experience - many amenities including pool, trails, tennis courts, and more. The village is walkable from the house. The house is quite nice and comfy. I like that it is open and airy but there are a few details that renters should be aware of before renting this property. 1) The pictures can be misinterpreted to look like the lawn is right on the water. The house is in the trees on a bluff that is 10-15ft off the water. There is no way to launch kayaks or paddleboards directly from the property (which I missed from description). You can launch at the public launch in town (but must drive). There is a beach access just down the street but it is privately owned and I was told by homeowner that I was not allowed to launch my kayak there. They seem to be okay with people walking along the water there thankfully. 2) The house is in the forest / trees - so views are through trees and it was pretty buggy in early June and made use of the nice deck tough. I should note it had been rainy but we had stayed previous week on water in Corea and didn't struggle with mosquitos as much. On the other hand, the walks from the house on the road are beautiful and there are a ton of trails you can use. 3) The downside of the open wood construction and lack of insulation is that sound carries through the house very easily. If you have teenagers who stay up late, you'll hear them talk in the bedrooms and sound of people going in and out of bathroom communicates through the house. If you have light sleepers, it's something to be aware.
These items noted, we really enjoyed the house and our stay. An unadvertised bonus was that there is a REALLY nice big work desk on second floor with views to water for those who have to work remote and fast internet. The décor reflected the artists ownership with some works by family members. The combo of wood stove and open fireplace made for cozy nights and mornings. It's a fantastic stove (recent model Jotul!) and will easily heat the whole house. We had a snafu with check-in where the check-in time had been changed to 2 hours later but, since we rented before that change, our instructions didn't reflect the later time. That's the fault of VRBO, not the owners. That said, house wasn't ready by the new check-in time and left us in awkward spot. Of course, everyone is dealing with staffing shortages so am sympathetic.

Great house
The house had almost everything we wanted. Well stocked and comfortable. The only thing I was disappointed about was the water access. There is no dock and the water access is a very short walk down the road to a public beach. Overall, a great house and we had a great time in Maine.

Rest and rejuvenation
I’ve been coming to Oak Bluff since 2004. Each year it feels like coming home. The area is the right mix of things to do with a home base that offers everything I need to relax.
I’ve looked for places with the same blend and haven’t found them. So I’ll be back next year.

Peaceful with great views
We really enjoyed our stay. Communication was great and the property manager was above and beyond helpful. The cabin is lovely, and we so enjoyed long walks by the water through Sorrento.

Annual Retreat
I've been coming to Oak Bluff for 15 years or so and it is the time I look forward to most in my year. The mix of isolation and proximity is just right and the view from the deck is ever-changing and peaceful.

Love this place!
We had a great time in Sorrento, and this was the perfect place to stay. We loved that it was both in-the-woods and on-the-ocean, and we loved the size and accessibility of everything in Sorrento. The house was comfortable and cozy - the fireplace made the trip! The nights were cool, so having the fireplace was amazing. And the sunrises and morning were terrific from the deck. Jay was really helpful and responsive and the whole experience was really positive. We'd love to come back!

Sorrento Serenity
What a wonderful spot. At the water’s edge with views that constantly change with the tides and breezes. Woodsy paths and quiet roads for walking (since our visit was early October) with shopping and restaurants not too far away.
The cottage is nicely equipped and the fireplace and wood stove are welcome comforts to ward off the chill of fall mornings and evenings. We couldn’t have enjoyed our stay more.

Great stay
Great location with stunning view providing solitude and privacy, yet close enough to Bar Harbor. Great access area to all parts of Acadia within a short drive. Most relaxing and agenda free trip I’ve had I. Years. Communication with property manager and owners was excellent! House fully stocked with towels, linens and kitchen equipment. Shady location with a great wood burner that came in handy for a chilly rainy evening. Highly recommend!

Peaceful get away in scenic coastal Maine
The property was very quiet in a beautiful setting just as advertised. We were looking for quiet time away with the ocean for company. The wood stove was very handy for the cool nights. Really enjoyed exploring the local hiking trails near the property. Even found some trails not listed on the map! Ellsworth and Bar Harbor just the right distance away, accessible but not in the back yard. Had a nice dinner at the Crocker Inn. Overall, really enjoyable week away.

Tranquility in beautiful area 5 Stars
What a lovely cottage. Set away from the hustle of the world. Peaceful setting that is ideal to unplug and relax. Close enough to visit Acadia National Park and enjoy all the scenic wonders of this beautiful part of the country. Very nice owners who are concerned with the guest's experience. 5 Stars!!

The perfect spot for coastal Maine visits.
My wife and I spent our honeymoon at this charming place in Sorrento. It was the perfect distance from civilization. We spent a few days in Acadia and Bar Harbor, but we also enjoyed reading books on the couch near the fire place. The owner's were very helpful and responsive with our questions regarding the rental which I really appreciated. They had some classic board games and some books to read for the rainy days and a beautiful view for the sunny ones. Thank you for letting us visit your family cottage, it was marvelous.

The property was lovely.
We greatly enjoyed our stay at this charming cottage in Sorrento, ME. It was cozy, clean and inviting inside, with interesting artwork and an inviting library. Outside, the deck afforded space for relaxing and taking in the amazing view of the water. The bedroom configuration was not the best for our family. The two with queen beds were fine, but we needed a third for our son, who is almost 6'5". He couldn't fit into the small bunks in the third bedroom, so used the loft, which he said was "like sleeping in the kitchen." Oh well, not a major problem...! The owner was very communicative and accommodating. We loved exploring Acadia and Bar Harbor. It took us 35-40 minutes to get over there each time, which, while not ideal, was do-able. One day we stayed at the cottage and took the canoe out, for a more "chill" time. A microwave would be a good addition. We mostly cooked dinners at the cottage, but one night had a great meal at Union River Lobster Pot Restaurant in Ellsworth. I highly recommend this property!

Peace and Quiet in Abundance
This is the third time I have stayed in the Collins' home (Oak Bluff) over the course of 8 years. Their home is very clean and well equipped and situated in a most beautiful, peaceful setting. You can sit on the deck and watch the tides roll in and out, listen to loons calling, see Bald Eagles land in the trees in front of you, and hear the mournful moans of the seals. There are hiking trails that lead you down to the seashore or you can walk the roads on the point. In the fall, there are very few people around so you rarely see a vehicle or a person! Its a great place to bike.
The interior is homey and inviting and decorated with family artwork. The wood burning fireplace was enough to take the chill off during the week we were there. While I'm glad the weather cooperated, I would have like to try the new wood stove. The basement is stocked with firewood which is very convenient.
A new high speed internet service was installed while we were there. It is very fast and reliable. Although there is no TV, if you subscribe to any of the streaming services, you can watch whatever you normally would at home.
The beds were made up for us when we arrived which was nice since we were tired from our travels. The beds are very comfortable. I slept like a baby every night.
We prepared a few meals while there. The kitchen had everything we needed. Watch out for the water pressure! Its great to shower in! PS_the water is also delicious to drink.
I like that the house is close enough to Mt Desert Island to go back and forth as many times as you would like without feeling like your constantly in the car. I prefer being in the peace of Sorrento versus the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor and Acadia. If you are a history buff, a day trip to Campobello Island should be on your list. And make sure you have "Tea with Eleanor".
Also, spend a day at Schoodic Peninsula. There is a big binder full of brochures and information about all there is to do in the area that is very helpful.
A week in Sorrento at Oak Bluff is never enough time. I suppose that is why I have been there three times and why I know I will return. It replenishes the spirit and satisfies the soul. Oak Bluff is a place that will steal your heart. If you can reserve it, make this the place you stay when visiting Downeast Maine.

BEAUTIFUL RELAXING ENVIRONMENT
WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME! IT WAS FOGGY THE FIRST 2 DAYS AND THOUGHT WE WOULD NEVER GET TO SEE THE WATER BUT IT CLEARED UP THE AFTERNOON OF THE SECOND DAY AND WAS BEAUTIFUL THE REST OF THE WEEK. YOUR CABIN WAS COZY AND COMFORTABLE ON THE COOL NIGHTS AND EARLY MORNINGS WHICH WE LOVED AFTER OUR HOT SUMMER IN THE SOUTH. THE DECK WAS WELCOMING AND THE PERFECT PLACE TO WATCH NATURE UNFOLD EACH DAY AND THE BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS IN THE EVENINGS. LOVED YOUR FLOWERS! HAD A GREAT TIME!

Cozy cottage on a bluff in Sorrento with beautiful views!
The Oak Bluff cottage was the perfect location for our stay. This comfortable, cozy cottage has everything you could need including a well appointed kitchen and an interesting library of books. It's an extremely clean, well maintained home as described on the website and Sheila was excellent to work with. The views from the deck of the surrounding bay are lovely and although you don't access the water here, it is a short walk down the road to a rocky beach. The town harbor in Sorrento is a great place to watch the sunset, meet some locals and walk in the evenings.
We highly recommend this cottage for it's proximity to area attractions while providing a peaceful, comfortable cottage to return to or not to leave at all.

Paradise found
The Collins' cottage in Sorrento, ME was a perfect place to spend the week. Just off the beaten path and ideally peaceful, but close enough to bustling areas. Sorrento is a great place to ride bikes, paddle the bays or take in the beautiful vistas from the shore. The cottage itself was comfortable and well stocked. We enjoyed coffee on the deck each morning overlooking Flanders Bay. The kitchen had everything needed to cook up lobster dinners. The fireplace was the coziest way to end each day. I would absolutely recommend this paradise to other guests.

My yearly visit to sanity
I have stayed at Oak Bluff for several years now. I also have a timeshare at beautiful resorts in Mexico. I always choose Oak Bluff when I only have time for one. The serenity, the changing landscape with the tides coming in and out - the remoteness and yet easy access to anything that I could want for two years each fall... I can't think of anything that I'd change.
The house itself is delightfully simple with all the amenities I want for my time in the woods. It is always well cared for and simply feels like I'm coming home after a long time away.
I've done everything from whale watching to DNR tours, kayaking and visits to Acadia. I've had few poor meals - We do always make a visit to Chester's Pike for blueberry pancakes.
I recommend it without reservation.

Heavenly
We have stayed here many times. It is our preferred vacation spot. The cabin is comfy, well kept and well supplied with necessities. Lots of space to stretch out (I love the loft; my spouse loves the living room). Views from the deck are beautiful and very soothing. The setting (cabin and Sorrento) is wonderful; it's a great for walking, biking, doing yoga on the town dock, reading, etc. It is close to Schoodic Point--one of our favorite places (to walk, picnic, hike, or just ocean-gaze). Chester Pike's breakfasts are not to be missed (the fish-fry on Friday nights too--but get there early). There are a number of nearby hiking trails (pick up a guide at Chester Pike's). Lots of out of the way artists studios to explore. The cabin is about a 40 minute drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Worth the drive or the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor. The views from the top of Cadillac Mountain are stunning.
This vacation spot offers something for everyone. If you want peace, quiet, and lovely views, the cabin offers that in abundance. If you are want a lot of vigorous outdoor activity with lovely views, it's all there.
The owners a joy to work with. We so appreciate their sharing their piece of heaven on earth with us.
